I feel very grateful to Dr. Lawson and the entire staff. I feel very well taken care of, heard and seen. Dr.Lawson is incredibly meticulous with every task and I can tell that she takes whatever time necessary to ensure the highest quality and sustainable care. Not to mention, she is extremely talented at what she does. I had 4 fillings done and they look like my regular teeth. What a relief as the irreversible, stained dent was on my front tooth! Also, I felt demoralized about the state of my teeth due to heavy brushing and grinding. However, she helped me reframe and reminded me that it can only get better from now on. Come for the caring, knowlegeable Dr. Lawson, and stay for the masterful, gentle artistry that is Bianca's work as a gem of a hygienist! Bianca always does prolific work, and she clearly enjoys her work. I've experienced hygienists who are too nervous, bitter, or heavy handed at other practices, and trust me, this gifted woman is none of those things. Bianca is a treasure! In fact, the office staff is friendly, and the office itself is clean, and carries an intention of cultivating wellness in our bodies and the environment. This practice is way more holistic than Total Health, which I feel should call itself Total Hustle for a number of reasons, the first if which is that it's not practicing holistic dentistry as it claims. Dr. Lawson's practice is more sincere in their ability to deliver holistic dentistry. They are also fairly straight up about pricing, so when they had to go out of network with my provider, I still stayed with them and am able to plan and manage it. The quality is worth it! read more

Need to update this. I don't believe I've ever left a bad review because I prefer to just reach out to the business and let them know so they can improve. But I called them, told the receptionist as well as left a voicemail text. They never bothered to respond. Here is what I told them (below) to which I got no response. Oddly what I did receive from them was a check in the mail for an overcharge, which then made me wonder if they had been overcharging me and thought maybe that was why I left their practice. Guess I'll never know. In response to their text telling me that I didn't have a future appointment, I said: That's because I left your practice. I have a new Dentist and Dental Hygienist that I'm really happy with. And guess what? They don't make me wait over an hour and cancel on me 75% of the time. Last time I was at your place I waited over an hour. When Dr. Laura walked in and noticed that I hadn't said anything nice like I usually did, she said, "Hi! Are you okay?" I said, "I had to cancel my next appointment because I didn't expect to be here so long." To which she responded, "Oh! Have you never had an appointment with me before?! Everyone has to wait for ME." Hello?! I've only been coming here for years. And, I mean, really?! There's only 90 minute parking on Solano Ave. There should be a heads up to prevent your people from getting a ticket. Good thing I know where to park. So, I left. I have my own practice, so I know how to respond when I've made someone wait. The LAST thing I would say is what she said to me. Epic arrogance. Not to mention selfish, negligent and downright rude. Your practice had already pissed off my husband when the Hygienist caused him intense pain with the X-ray mouth bits. When he said it hurt, they blamed him for being too sensitive. Your practice also made my children wait for an hour or more for the Dentist - Dr. Laura - with complete and utter disregard for their schedules and patience while they waited in the dentist chair. Never any apologies. Ever. You're lucky I haven't put all this on yelp reviews . You're welcome . So, here I am putting this on a Yelp review after waiting over 3 months for a response to my voicemail and conversation with the receptionist and nearly two months since the text I sent. Pretty bad to choose not to respond aside from sending a check in the mail, which btw had nothing but the check in the envelope. How hard would it have been to put a little note in the envelope? Dr. Lawson's office knows how I feel about my dental work. No longer terrified. I've been a patient with the practice for 10 years. Dr. Lawson used to do the dental cleanings herself. When the practice grew, Caroline was hygienist. To this day, I only see her. I don't care if it's months away for an opening. Caroline is wonderful! I have a deep scaling in the next few months. I went to Dr. Lawson for a decade. She genuinely cares and wants to help. Some of her beliefs about self healing get in the way of solving the problem. * You will wait. They run late, sometimes hours late. The nicer you are about the wait, the longer you will wait. The hygienists complain about constant delays but can't get the office to start scheduling appointments with slack in the calendar. * If you have problematic teeth that don't respond to easy dental intervention, you will be told to have less stress in your life and to meditate. I thought a holistic dentist was going to be good for me. I wound up getting shamed for my dental pain. I had to argue for enough anesthesia to avoid feeling the pain during fillings and other procedures. * The type of mouthguard Dr. Lawson prescribed caused an open anterior bite in my teeth (both an endodontist and an orthodontist independently ascribed my current dental problems to this mouth guard and said it was a known problem with that style). Dr. Lawson actually noticed this herself but was unable to admit responsibility. I internalized that the problem was me and my stressful life for many years. I'm seeing a new dentist now who focuses on the teeth instead of telling me to meditate more. We brought our two young children to see Dr. Lawson after doing much research on local holistic dentists and reading glowing reviews. After a two-month-long wait for an appointment, we arrived early and had to sit another hour and some in the waiting room, juggling two hyperactive kids. But that was only the beginning. Over the course of two visits, I got judged as a mother, shamed, criticized, cut off mid-sentence, and blamed for everything that was not going "right" with my child's behavior and health. And what I was doing "right" could've been done better. All of this was based on Dr. Lawson's quick assumptions about my parenting style and character. Also, there were obvious unresolved personal issues projected onto me and my family. My desire to be included in the decision-making process was met with resentment. And I was told that I should keep quiet, let her do the work, and stay out of the way. She was snarky, constantly on edge, and passive-aggressive in her comments. We came to her practice seeking help and support, looking forward to all the benefits of a holistic approach. Instead, my child left the office traumatized by the experience and I felt like I was just used as someone's punching bag. I believe that Dr. Lawson is a highly trained, knowledgeable, dedicated, and overworked professional that got burned out in her practice. Her behavior is unprofessional and abusive. After a history of dentists that have tormented me: filled cavities and then removed the filling and refilled them due to the fact that their first attempt was awful; treated their staff horribly and while their hands were in my mouth they were bickering with their staff or making sexual innuendos toward their female staff members. Well those nightmares are over. Dr. Lawson is amiable. I came in with jaw pain and not only did she recommend a night guard, but she also made more holistic recommendations such as hot packs, massage and a relaxing tea before bed to reduce my teeth grinding habit. I love that she considers the whole body and not just the teeth in it. Another plus, if you are a student at UC Berkeley, your insurance is accepted here. read more

Dr. Lawson saved my tooth! I had gone to another dentist who had already completed one root canal on another molar and said I needed another root canal when she went to fill a cavity in another molar. I went to Dr. Lawson for a second opinion, to make sure my 1st dentist wasn't just root-canal-happy. Dr. Lawson said it was probably going to be fine as a filling. She did the procedure yesterday and not only saved me from another root canal, she even took the time to remove the mercury filling that was in the tooth! She's AWESOME! I've been here a few times and had a good experience. I had to cancel an appointment after my grandmother died and unfortunately, I had to cancel another appointment after catching a stomach bug. I called, explained the situation and the woman I spoke with told me I would need to pay a $50 fee for cancelling since this was the second time. I explained that I could provide a doctors note if needed, but coming in and getting sick inside their offices didn't seem like the best for either of us. She said she would see what she could do and we ended the call. Lo and behold, I get a bill for $50 in the mail. I call again because it really doesn't make sense to me that an office that talks about "holistic care" wants to charge me $50 because I didn't come into their offices to spread my sickness. The woman I spoke to was very short with me, didn't want to hear anything I had to say, and told me I would have to wait and call back another time when her other coworker was there. I'm happy to talk to this other woman, but I'm shocked by the treatment I'm receiving, but perhaps I shouldn't be after seeing the other stories on Yelp of how they do their billing at this office. The staff and dentist are all nice enough, but I really never got the feeling there was anything holistic about their approach. The other negative for me was telling me I needed to remove all of my mercury fillings, at an extremely high out of pocket cost. They also told me that all of my previous dental work was shoddy and had to be redone even though it was done in the last year. I got a second opinion from a very nice holistic dentist in Point Richmond who didn't see any issues with my dental work. read more

I like dr. laura but the wait time when seeing the dentist is just TOO LONG. My old dentist office would get me into the exam room right on time and the dentist would see my right away after a teeth cleaning. At Dr. Lawson's office having an appointment time just never is the time you go back. It seems like I get to my appointment at the right time but do not get taken back for at least 30-45 min after my set time. I give myself at least an hour or so for appointments but when I am not even taken back at my scheduled time I feel it really rude and wasteful for me to just sit. I hate to give a 2 star but this is my only complaint about the office, Dr. Lawson is good! She has kept my smile nice and bright! read more

I switched dentists because I started regular classes at UC Berkeley and wanted to be closer to campus for appointments ( I live in Napa). I was really quite pleased with the initial visit and thrilled to be supporting an office full of women professionals. My daughter also decided to switch and become a client. I was also encouraged that orthodontia was offered and Dr. Lawson enthusiastically assured me she would be able to provide the service. All additional appointments I was kept waiting over fifteen minutes, sometimes forty-five minutes for my appointments, I was told it was because of emergencies care for other patients. On several appointments I had to tell the assistant that the procedure they were setting up for me had been performed on the previous visit. One appointment, as my tooth was being filled with porcelain Dr. Lawson asked the assistant for a better match for the color of the porcelain only to hear her determine they were out of the required color. I was stuck and of course had them proceed. My daughter on a short visit home from Europe, agreed to a procedure that required a follow-up before heading back to Europe and the follow-up procedure was actually set up for the initial procedure and was not able to be completed at that time. She had to wait around till the proper assistant had time to do the required work ( she was leaving for Europe the next morning). I had a bonding come out of a front tooth (a twenty minute repair that had been completed at a previous dentist as an emergency) and when I called to try and get an appointment I was told I would have to wait till they could look at the tooth to assess the repair. I was scheduling a cleaning at the same time and was getting ready to study in Europe for four months and tried to set an appointment which would cover both procedures. The office would not work with me and set the cleaning but when I went in they would not do the repair as well. I ended up leaving for Europe without the filling being completed. I was so upset at the number of times I waited for other patient emergencies but the time could not be found for my repair. I had the repair completed elsewhere. The orthodontia was also later deemed not possible. The billing by this firm is also very sleazy. I had a bill for $1,200.00 on which I would receive monthly reminder calls and threats to be sent to collections as the bill went through the insurance process. Eventually the insurance covered its' portion, $700.00 and I immediately received threats to be sent to collections for the balance. Dr. Lawson can be extremely rude. I do not understand how someone who claims to be holistic can generate such angst in her clients. This is the first time I have ever written a negative review but feel that potential clients should be made aware of how this office operates. read more

I like Dr. Laura and have always been treated well by her staff. However, It can be a wait to get an appointment should you cancel and reschedule. This year I have new insurance from work so I switched dentists as my new insurance is not a carrier that Dr. Laura's office uses. It makes my life easier to have a dentist that is easier to get into due to more flexible hours and being closer to work. Dr. Laura has my trust. I've been seeing Dr. Lawson for close to 20 years! She so highly impressed me from the get-go that I followed her from Oakand to Berkeley to Albany where she has the most wonderfully attractive and well appointed office. She and all her staff are so warm, friendly, extremely competent and professional. I trust Dr. Lawson implicitly. She stays current with all the new research in her field and if there is something she is not sure of she will let you know. Also, the whole place is spotlessly clean. Today I had a cleaning with Caroline....one of, if not THE best cleanings ever! If you are looking for a superlative dental experience, you owe it to yourself to come here. I like doctor Lawson and I have been with her for several years but recently it became impossible to schedule an appointment in a reasonable time frame, even if this is an emergency they don't take you but send you to another dentist. The wait time is 3-4 months and if your schedule changes and you cannot make it you have to wait another 3-4 months. Even if they cancel the appointment you are often moved by a few months. At this point, I felt that the wait times and re-scheduling issues affected my oral health and decided to find another dentist. read more

I came in for a cleaning procedure And I made it very, very clear I needed to know what my financial responsibility was prior to the appointment, I was quoted somewhere in the ballpark of $130 and agreed and kept my appointment About 2 weeks later I received a additional bill for $250.00 When I called to ask about this I was told my Insurance was no longer fully covered at their office ....mmmmm sounds like something they should have known prior to my appointment and not two weeks afterwards Out of curiosity I called my insurance which was Delta at the time and they confirmed in deed that the coverage had changed ........ almost a full year before I even became a patient at this office ..... I would've never had the procedure done had I known it would've cost me $380 for a cleaning... and now this office has put that $250 into collections... I have no idea how long this office has been in business but I hope to God they go that out of business soon read more

Everyone was great--Laura herself, her hygienists Jessica and Patricia, and the receptionist. Everything was timely. The office was comfortable and pleasant to be in. She was knowledgeable and supportive in regards to holistic options. Being in a health and wellness field myself, I see any doctor's appointment as a great educational opportunity. I just went to Dr Lawson for the first time today and I couldn't have been any more pleased. Much like the other reviewers, I've been dreading finding a new dentist for years (much to the changrin of my teeth) and have bad anxiety when the time actually comes to go in. Laura Lawson is a warm and funny dentist. She put me at ease immediately. She explained all procedures and let me know my options. Her staff are also very nice and calming. The office is clean and you notice the nice touches, like the organic hand soap in the bathroom as well as the organic mouthwashes at each station. If you're having a long procedure, she recommends you to listen to music through headphones. You get to choose the music from an online music library. And she gives you tinted glasses so the lights don't shine in your eyes. If you're afraid of the needle, don't be if Dr. Lawson is administering the injection. She has a great technique to make getting injections a little less nerve-wracking! What I like especially about Dr. Lawson is that she's a mom to a small child and she was great with my 2 little ones when they visited for their check ups. My son loves to parade around the house with the cute little sunglasses he chose as his prize for a good cleaning! I made an appt thinking that I'd meet Dr Lawson, but another dentist did my regular checkup instead. I left the dental clinic terrified, because apparently i was diagnosed with 'periodontal disease', and had to undergo deep cleaning/root planing procedures before the dentist would do crowning for my decolorized & chipped front tooth. The treatment plan came out so pricey even with my insurance, so i went to another dentist for a 2nd opinion. Turns out, my teeth are fine and there's no need for root planing, and based on the xrays, there's certainly no sign of periodontitis! Avoid this clinic if you want to meet ethical dentists for your dental health. read more

I would not go to this dentist. Find someone else!! Laura Lawson was rude and disrespectful to me when I told her I was breastfeeding my child. Not only was she not holistic in her approach to breastfeeding (she seemed totally against it), but she was outright rude to me when I tried to discuss the matter with her. I would not expect any doctor or dentist to ever be so rude. Her assistants were also rude. One of them volunteered the statement, "I hope you're not breastfeeding your daughter when she's 8." This was totally uncalled for since my daughter was only 1 1/2 years old at the time of the visit. And, even if she was older, there was no reason for the assistant to make a statement like that except to be disrespectful to me. In addition to these problems, the staff has been very flaky and unhelpful. They have messed up twice in communicating with me. Once because they wrote down the wrong phone number and never figured out that they were not calling me. The other time, they claimed to have mailed me a bill which they didn't mail to me. As a result, the office charged me extra fees for the bill being late. This was after they had assured me that my insurance company was going to pay for it. My general impression of this office was that they were playing lip service to the holistic world to get clients. Decent quality dentistry, but Dr. Lawson herself tends to rush patients through and becomes annoyed with questions regarding care plans. Her staff are often nicer than she is, when she is off work and other dentists sub in for her, the office has a happier vibe overall and there is no pressure to rush through conversation or questions. I am so grateful to have a dentist like Dr. Lawson. She is very knowledgeable and thorough about all aspects of dental health - for adults and children. She takes time to explain any oral health situation, provides options and gives her recommendation. Dr. Lawson is very respectful about individual choices - I never feel like she is trying to sell me or scare me into making a decision. My child's teeth are very crowded, and we have been doing the ALF orthodontic with Dr. Lawson for the past year. It is working amazingly well - the adult teeth are straightening out beautifully. Dr. Lawson is truly a green dentist - she and her staff and colleagues walk the talk. For example, her questions and information about nutrition rightly place dental care within a context of whole health. What you eat does affect your teeth and oral health in addition to your overall health. Dr. Lawson is a wonderful dentist who I can't recommend highly enough. I like her enough that now that I've moved, rather than find a closer dentist, I schedule my appointments with her on the day I commute to Berkeley for class. Dr. Lawson showed me (and in a very non-condescending way) how to properly brush my gums and teeth and corrected some poorly done fillings to my teeth in the past to make them look great. She's a complete perfectionist, which means your mouth is going to look as perfect as possible by the time she's done with you. Dr. Lawson is also very friendly and personable (a stuffy dentist she is not), and the whole staff is very fun and relaxed. Dr. Lawson has been my dentist for the past 5 years or so now. And once you find a good dentist, you just don't want to leave. She is awesome and very nice. Very gentle when you need her to be. Her office is always kind and trys to fit you in the schedule best you can. I would recommend taking the first appt of the day so that you don't have to wait too long. I love the fact that she is willing to have you come in once and get all your cleaning, xrays, checkup and fillings done at one time for your convenience. I also like the fact that many times, she does the cleanings as well and doesn't just shove that work aside to a dental assistant. even though her assistants are also great.
