I went in to get ptosis surgery done on my right eye this summer by Dr. Phan. It was pretty straight forward, even in the time of covid. I had a consultation via video, a pre-op appointment where we determined ptosis would be a good option and went over details, the surgery, and two post op appointments. All of this was scheduled quickly which was great. Her staff was helpful and kind. I had the procedure done in office with local anesthetic. I may have a low pain tolerance, but the surgery is pretty uncomfortable, but it only lasts about 15 minutes (maybe) per eye. I was afraid of the pain and bruising, but both were less than I expected. Post surgery, I was puffy for the first day or two and you'll want those days to recover inside. ICE YOUR EYE. The bruises showed up later than I expected and stayed for longer than I thought (probably because I didn't ice enough). However, they weren't very noticeable and I felt pretty comfortable going into public a few days after the procedure. I wear glasses so it was relatively camouflaged. It has been about six weeks and I feel great about my results. It's an investment, but well worth it. read more

If I could give Dr. Laura Phan 10 stars, I would. She is, hands down, the BEST Doctor / Ophthalmologist / Oculofacial plastic surgeon. I simply cannot imagine anybody being more thorough, thoughtful, caring, professional, detail-oriented, or clear. Here's my story,... A year ago, I developed ptosis in my right eye. Initially, I thought it was severe dry eye because I have been wearing contacts lenses for almost two decades; looking back, it was probably my eyelid rubbing against my pupil that caused the scratchiness and "dry" sensation. Thankfully, I learned that ptosis appeared to be quite a common condition and could be resolved through surgery. I wanted to be extremely cautious about which oculofacial plastic surgeon to select since this was my precious eye, and I found two doctors in the Bay Area (one of them being Dr. Phan) who had stellar reviews on Yelp. I had consultations with both doctors but, this is why I ultimately selected Dr. Phan: 1) During my first visit on 10/31/2014, Dr. Phan spent over one hour with me even though it was the end of her working day. She normally does not see patients on Friday because she reserves Fridays for surgical procedures. However, I travel for work a great deal so, she accommodated me by seeing me after a full day of performing surgeries. She took a great deal of measurements, performed a comprehensive check of both of my eyes as an Ophthalmologist should, diluted my eyes, put some other drops in to check the health of my eyes, and placed another set of drops in my right eye that magically lifted my right eyelid. Apparently, if my right eye reacted well to those drops, then I might be an ideal candidate for the procedure that she ultimately recommended for me (a less invasive ptosis repair surgery). I was SO grateful that Dr. Phan took a conservative approach with my right eye. Given the less severe nature of my ptosis, Dr. Phan did not recommend the typical procedure, which could be quite invasive and could require at least 2-4 weeks of recovery. She then recommended that I obtain an MRI scan so that she could doubly confirm that my ptosis was not a symptom of a larger health issue (so thorough!). She also took the time to answer my laundry list of questions. Through it all, Dr. Phan was incredibly patient and professional. 2) After my MRI, I went to see Dr. Phan again (12/1/2014) and, thankfully, my MRI came back completely normal. No health issues that might be causing the ptosis. Whew! She then had me take a test that would help indicate whether my ptosis would be covered by my health insurance for medical reasons, or whether my health insurance would deem the ptosis repair as a cosmetic procedure. Unfortunately, my ptosis repair was considered a cosmetic procedure but, I am thankful that she was very upfront about it. Then, she went into great detail to explain the surgical procedure - how to prepare prior of the surgery and also the day of, how much it would cost out-of-pocket, what to expect, how long the recovery period might be, etc. She also presented to me the option of either local anesthesia or something like general anesthesia. Again, she was patient and professional as she answered my laundry list of questions. 3) On 12/19/2014, Dr. Phan preformed my ptosis repair surgery. Dr. Phan utilizes the Los Gatos Surgical Center facilities. The staff and nurses at Los Gatos Surgical Center facilities were also extremely professional, efficient, and patient. Another doctor administered the anesthesia (I was not completely knocked out - strangely, I was "asleep" and I could not feel any pain but, I could hear everything and I was conscious). The procedure was over in about an hour, maybe less than an hour. My eye looked swollen and nasty (but that was expected) and Dr. Phan prescribed me some painkillers if I needed them. She also gave me her personal cell phone number and said that I could contact her anytime if I had any issues or questions during the healing process. That night, Dr. Phan even contacted me to check-up on me. So kind!! 4) On 12/21/2014, I noticed that my right eye was still rather swollen and my eye was very red; there also appeared to be a broken blood vessel. I contacted Dr. Phan right away, texted her a picture, and she suggested that I come into her office on Sunday. Of course, normally she does not open on Sundays but, she came in just to see me. WOW. Talk about being accountable for her work! She identified the source of the problem - a suture had come loose - and she tightened the suture, gave me an extra ice pack, sterilizing bandages, and some tape to keep the suture tight. Throughout the course of the week, I texted Dr. Phan whenever I had questions or if I was nervous. Today, 12/26/2014, Dr. Phan took my stitches out and my right eye is HEALED! It's symmetrical and even with my left eye! I am SO FREAKN' HAPPY!!! I can't believe how quickly I healed. I am SO grateful for Dr. Phan and HIGHLY recommend her! read more

This review is long overdue. I had ptosis repair of my right eyelid in 2015 and nearly 4 years later I still couldn't be happier with the results. It's been pretty life-changing, especially since my ptosis was bad enough to obscure some of my vision. My experience was much like that of reviewer, Nancy L. (12/26/14), so for a very accurately written, thorough detail of the process, I recommend looking at her review. The main difference is that I did not experience any issues with my sutures post-op. Dr. Phan and her front desk/assistant, Marissa, were professional, easy to communicate with, and helped me so much in dealing with insurance and insurance coverage for the procedure. They took care of everything. Also, the surgery center was very well run and the anesthesiologist was amazing at making me feel comfortable before and after going under. Dr. Phan as well. Honestly, I'm really shocked by the negative reviews I've seen... they seem extreme too. It's nowhere near what my experience was, so I wonder if a lot of it was miscommunication. I've seen my fair share of "terrible" doctors so unless we're talking about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Phan is nowhere in that category. I recommend getting a consultation with her and make sure you do your part in the discussion. If you do, I doubt you will want to go anywhere else. She corrected a small mole/tumor bump right on my eyelash line that required surgery. I have super dry eyes and it was starting to truly affect my daily life- plus I hated the way it looked- like I had a flesh colored stye- which it was not and took forever to have someone confident enough to do it. I was super nervous that the scar and lash line would be ruined as it required removal of that area (including lash area)then losing that extra coverage area because the space negated has to be then pulled together to create my eye shape and my lashline flow exactly. I really like the shape of my eyes that I was born with, and I feared they would be crooked, look asymmetrical (one biggie eye and one beady eye- I mean I loved Popeye but I didn't want to look like him.). She assured me that she could do this surgery and she was referred to me by my eye doctor I had seen for decades and deals with high maintenance customers on the daily. She did a fantastic job, and now about a year later you can't even tell I had it done. And my eyes match! Whew....dodged a bullet. Her office is very clean, the receptionist very customer service oriented, and parking easy. The surgery went well and I would recommend her. I would less worry about weather you "like her" or not and more about her stitch skill and confidence. read more

I slipped and smashed my face on a wet floor. After 4 hours in the emergency room and multiple x-rays and scans, I was told I had multiple fractures on my nose, eye, and cheek bones. My face looked smashed in. I was referred to various nose, eye, facial bone doctors with additional referral to more doctors from these doctors. However, none of them was able to significantly help with my condition. At the time, I was overwhelmed with doctor's appointments and follow ups with no significant results. Dr. Laura Phan was one of the referrals I had appointment with. After the initial paperwork and payment was satisfied, I was led into the exam room. Dr. Phan came in, went over the referral, and then told me that I was referred to her for "Orbital Fracture" but she doesn't perform this kind of procedure. I said to myself, "oh god, another wasted appointment, referral and time" and was getting ready to leave. But Dr. Phan spent the next 60 minutes carefully reviewing my case, performed multiple tests, called, and texted multiple sources on the spot to figure out the best solution for me. She actually got instant replies for her calls and texts within seconds. She then got her staff, Lisa, to call around and tried to set me up with the best doctor at the earliest appointment. Her office even tried to make a backup appointment for me just in case the first appointment doesn't work out. At the end, I only need to see one more doctor after Dr. Phan. That doctor was able to repair my nose, eye, cheek bones and my face in one procedure. After 4 long weeks, I am finally on my way to recovery with no visual defect on my face. Dr. Phan performed my eyelid surgery 6 months ago. I had minimal swelling and/or bruising. I had visited other eye surgeons and non explained the procedure better than Dr. Phan. It greatly reduced my fears. But the best part is that prior to the surgery I had little or no vision on my right eye and limited vision on my left eye. Today I no longer wear prescription glasses. I was referred to Laura Phan by my optometrist after she detected an unusual eye lesion. I was able to make an appointment pretty quickly over the phone. The appointment itself was not off to a good start though when it was 15 minutes late for no apparent reason. Dr. Phan's general demeanor was calm but not terribly friendly or reassuring. She did not seem to have read the referral as to why I was there or who even referred me. I had to probe and ask a lot of questions to get enough detail as to what my eye problem could be and what the future courses of action would be. She became flustered to the point of annoyance when I asked her who would be performing the surgery at the Mountain View site if that was found to be necessary, which I thought was a straightforward question but I had to ask it in a few different ways to get an answer. So, overall, we didn't communicate that well. I also would have appreciated knowing what she was doing as she was doing it, like explaining that my eyes would be dilated (no forewarning) and that an instrument would be touching the surface of my eye, instead of jumping right in and doing it. I'm explaining some of these things in detail because each thing taken individually was not that big of a deal, but collectively left a sour impression with me. My last point of contention is that I received a bill not just for the office visit ($300) but a separate $100 bill for 'eye photography.' Toward the end of my one visit with her, she took a photo of my eye with her digital SLR camera, and I was under the impression that this was just to show me the lesion on my eye under slightly more magnification. While I understand they may need some sort of documentation for insurance purposes, it still seems outrageous to be personally billed, and for this much, for non-diagnostic or pre-op purposes. My general impression after the office visit and reading her website, is that Dr Phan's emphasis is on cosmetic issues and less on medical issues (especially unusual cases like mine). I saw Dr. Barbara Erny at PAMF for a second opinion and had a much better experience there. read more

I never faced such bad attitude from a doctor to a patient. I wasn't able to buy Indomethacin Dr. Laura Phan prescribed me because I did not feel good and I had a lot of pressure at work, so I was taking Ibuprofen which she also said is OK at my previous visit. But when she heard that, she said that she "couldn't help me if I didn't follow her direction".  She just kicked me out without even taking a look at my test results. She doesn't care about her patients, just her ambitions. read more

My wife started to notice wrinkles and dark circles around my eyes this year. They didn't bothered me, but they did my wife. We ended up seeing Dr. Phan based on my wife's friend's recommendation. She listened to my wife's concerns and really put us at ease. She explained why the wrinkles and circles developed and what to do for them. She was thorough. She explained the pros and cons of different options. She took her time and gave us all of her attention until we had no questions left. Even though I don't like needles I would definitely come back to Dr. Phan to get the Botox and Restylane injections she suggested if I ever do them. For now, I'm ok with some wrinkles. read more

Under eye tear trough filler. If you are planning any under eye tear trough filler, i would do further research and go with someone who does them frequently and has good technique. I went to this doc because she was recommended and thought that she would be good. The technique she used was horrible. She injected one side more than another, and than decided to inject a bit more again. She did not use or share the exact amount to each under eye as i would imagine you should do. Plus she injected in several different spots on each side. The one side that she thought needed more ended up super swollen, bruised and somewhat deformed(elevated more in one specific location). I know they explain the risks and all, and you do sign hoping that this will turn out ok. Well 6 months later and the bump, deformity, or elevated spot is still there, and this was not part of my face prior to her injections with filler to my under eyes. Hope this helps anyone who is looking into any cosmetic/filler with this doctor. read more

Dr. Phan operated on both of my eyes. She was AWESOME!! Dr .Phan covered all the details, before the surgery, made sure all my questions were answered, and that I was comfortable with the procedure she was to perform. She has a very gentle touch, which is important when it's your delicate eye area & eyes. During the surgery, all was done in a professional manner, with supreme attention to every detail! After the surgery the Dr. followed - up with my daughter (there to drive me home...), she took care of me, and followed-up that afternoon, checking my progress & the next day too. I was really displeased with my consultation. $75 for about 15 minutes of time, with a cold, condescending Dr. who didn't seem to give a damn about my concerns. Maybe she had an off day, but she took all these pictures & then pointed out a bunch of flaws that I had never considered flaws. That was funny. I almost started laughing. I mean, she was picking me apart, but she's no beauty herself. I wanted to do the same thing back. I didn't ask for her to point out my areas of " concern" she took it upon herself! Making me feel bad about myself doesn't work. It's a low form of manipulation used for centuries. I came for a specific area, I left a detailed message prior to my appointment time. Perhaps they could have saved me a trip since a side effect of injections of fillers near the eyes can cause blindness in some patients. If they had told me that on the phone I never would have come in! But hey, why not get $75 out of some idiot right? Also, Dr, don't make appointments for dermal fillers the day before a major holiday & then tell the person they shouldn't do it that day because they'll have noticeable bruising. How dumb is that? read more
