For me, Laurel Hill State Park has so much nostalgia from my when my parents would bring me as a kid. This place stole my heart back then and always continues to draw me back no matter how old I get. We live near Pittsburgh, but it's only an hour long drive to laurel hill state park. The trip is basically a straight shot from the exit off of I-70 until one right turn that leads you the to the main entrance of the park. You always know when your getting close to the park from the long stretch of gorgeous trees and fresh air. Now that I have a daughter, this is our go-to for a cheap and relaxing day trip. Our favorite spot is the beach area. Here you will find a playground, a decent stretch of sand to lay in the sun and build castles, a safe swimming zone, a concession stand with perfect summer snacks, and a rental lodge to rent paddleboard, water bikes and row boats. The best times to visit are on weekdays in the summer or in the colder months when the beach area is less crowded. Playing in the sand in the cool fall air is something we love. Also on the beach is a bridge that takes you over the spillway. It makes for a great place to fish. If your lucky, you can see the fish below when the waters not too cloudy. The park also has cabins to rent, a handicap accessible fishing dock and multiple trails that will take you to waterfalls. If you stop by the main office, you can get maps and pamphlets to help you find your way around the trails. There is a gift shop by the beach that has information too. Another thing I love about Laurel Hill is all the great places close by, which adds to the day tripping fun. These are some of my favorites: Pioneer Park Campground (camping) Moo Echo Dairy (cold hoagies, candy shop) Caddie Shack (pay by the ride amusement park) Jake's Mini Golf Molly's Ice Cream Bradys Restaurant (HUGE pieces of pie) The Country shop (unique gifts, baked goods) Jenny globe (roadside attractions) Eat n Park Elephant (roadside attractions) Koosher state park (They have an "island")

    A view of the creek.

Visiting and drove by here a few times. Decided to venture in and was glad I did. There were several trails to choose from. Due to wet conditions we didn't follow as many as we wanted to. We did eventually come across a trail that was dryer than the other trails. My children 7, 9, and 11 enjoyed themselves. They were happy when they saw the turtles, Canadian Geese, and other small animals. We will surely visit again next time we are in the area.

The campsite bathroom was clean, well stocked and regularly maintained. All of the employees at the trading post were friendly as well! Park rangers drove around regularly (4-5 time through the campsite a day I'd say). My only wish would be adding closure information onto the website so people know ahead of time. During our visit the main overlook was under construction/maintenance so there was no access to it. Which was a little disappointing since it looks beautiful online! But it was a short 5 minute walk out to the overlook so it was easy to get back to a different trail. (It is clear the individuals who work and manage the park take great pride in it, and take care of the facilities wonderfully!).

The Ravens Rock trail has a beautiful outlook with cool, large rock structures. And the rock city trail was super fun too! The free maps of all the trails are very helpful. Some blazes could've been marked a bit clearer and some signs for trail heads could be adjusted as well. There is limited parking at trail heads so be sure to get there early to beat the crowds. The trading post was a fun addition with Coopers Rock merch, stickers (our personal fav), some local goods, firewood, some camping supplies, and even some ice cream treats! Overall we had a really nice stay!

Nice paths, old-growth trees, waterfalls, slow waters, wild birds, dragonflies!…read more Swallow Falls State Park near Deep Creek Lake, MD, is a nice park with well-marked paths and plenty of parking. We hiked half-a-day (Jun 2026) from the parking lot to scenic waterfalls in forests where Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone camped-in 1921. We saw some of the 37-acres of 360-year-old eastern hemlock and white pine trees, the largest of the few areas in Maryland that have never been logged, bypassed during the eastern-US logging boom of the the late 1800s and early 1900s. They tended to look a little scraggly around the base, i suppose from living an un-trimmed life in the un-tamed weather and climate. We were thrilled to read that, on June 16, 2026, the removal of old-growth forests that were threatened by bridge construction on Swallow Falls Road was blocked by the courts. Thank-you to the folks of Garrett County and the Chesapeake Legal Alliance!!! We love these old trees :-) We heard twittering birds, possibly blackburnian warblers, chickadees, nuthatches, and kinglets. We followed a rising rumbling sound, and found ourselves at a tall waterfall that roars and mists. We were careful to avoid rushing waters, and found that wading and crossing were pleasantly refreshing and not too slippery. We saw kayakers, and one paused to explain they liked these calmer waters for beginners and for staying in condition in less challenging settings. We loved the gold and black "black-shouldered spinylegs" dragonflies, we and may have glimpsed a rare all-black "sable clubtail" dragonfly, who flitted about but didnt wait for a photo or an entomology app. Let's say we saw one :-). It was a lovely cooler half-day deep in nature in a not-too-challenging environment in rare-these-days old-growth forests.

The ruins of an old pipe factory are very visible and there are informative signs that tell the story. These occurrences took place in the 1800's. There is history of criminals murdered, accidental death(pipe factory), a hanging, an explosion, a drowning, a giant snake sighting, all taking place in the park. For this reason many people think that the sight is haunted by the people who met their fate here. I hate to burst the excitement, but I have never experienced ghosts, or any other paranormal activity while spending time there. In fact, despite it's dark past Dead Man's Hollow is a very tranquil place. If you have been there during May when Spring season really kicks off you will see tons of wildflowers that are spectacular. The pipe factory had a fire and the ground was burned. This happens to be very good for re-growth and as a result we get to experience a lot of beautiful flora. Also, the old pipe factory remains are covered with cool graffiti. The trails are at times narrow, but they are very clean. You are at some point going to climb up and down hills, so it is a very good workout. I would say that the hiking is a bit more challenging. To find it I would suggest searching via a trailhead name and not just the park name. One example would be "cat fish pond trail." There is a nice parking area near that trailhead. There is also another parking area on the other side of the park(more on that later). This other side is closer to the ruins.

The spots that are open are at an incline sloped towards the pond and are very slippery and hazardous. I do not recommend taking young kids there. My daughter and I fished for an hour or so and only saw bluegill in the 3-4" range and smaller minnows. We used lures and worms and had many bites but the fish were too small to get hooked. We did see many water turtles and even a few babies whose shell was about 2-3" in diameter. We also saw one large snapping turtle appear for a few seconds. There are also a bunch of bullfrog minnows whose bodies were the size of golf balls (early June). It's a cool place to see but we won't be returning to fish.
