It truly is top down management, the philosophy they have carries through to the staff. the belief that the normal "Hospice cocktail" is the last resort, is what made me appreciate how they cared for my mother. It is care and kindness over medication. My mother felt like she was truely at home, during her stay. They always had her comfort in mind. The general manager gave us a tour of the building and the place has a really home-like quality and feel. The CNAs were friendly and welcoming. The biggest draw back for us was the gentleman who toured us. He didn't answer pertinent information about medical care and told us he didn't have a nurse available to talk with us at that particular time. He went out of his way to make sure to let us know that he lives in the building full time (a little weird but ok). When Tian, would try to explain things to us, he would cut her off. Some of the staff mentioned moms hobbies & previous career which seemed very rehearsed and almost Stepford like in nature. He appears very rehearsed and inauthentic. Outside of him I would say this place has great potential.

This was the second residential care facility that my mother was in. It has room for eight patients…read moremaximum. What I really loved about this place is that the manager and owners are caring individuals, Christians if that matters to you. This was important because their perspective on caregiving was much better than what you might get from an establishment just out for a profit. I felt that they really cared about my mother and wanted her to be as happy as possible. If you knew my mom, you would know how cranky she could be. So of course it was tough for her to be in a situation where she didn't have control and where there are rules to be followed. So their caring of course has limits. For example, for safety we were not allowed to visit during Covid at specific times. But honestly, I would prefer that over a lax facility that puts patient's health at risk. However, in those instances, they were more than willing to let me FaceTime mom and call whenever I wanted to. Another thing I liked is that the work shifts include night time. In the prior home she was in, there were only two patients maximum and the owners would sleep at night and get up to take care of their patients if needed. That made for very cranky owners because they were sleep deprived at times. The patience was not always intact. At Ohana, however, individuals come in specifically to work the night shift and are meant to stay awake the whole time and take care of other cleaning functions as well. So I had a level of comfort knowing that my mom could get help more easily at night. I think all of the residents are either memory care or immobile. I say that because each resident gets a button to push if they need help. There is a corresponding number for each room and the number shows in the living room on a display. That is really nice because I knew that my mom wouldn't have to yell really loud to try to get some help if needed. They also have a log where they keep track of all the medication and bowel movements and other information on each patient so that whoever comes in next will have the information. As a rule, I believe they change those that have to wear adult diapers every two or three hours. I could be wrong but I think that was the requirement. I believe with five or less residents they have one person working each shift and with 6 to 8 they have two people working each shift. So you know that they will get the care they need with another employee. Plus, the manager is often there as well and the owners pop in for visits. Another thing I loved about the facility is that they would really make birthdays special. They would get cakes and bring everybody out and have a celebration. They also celebrated every holiday. In addition, we had a walk for Alzheimer's that they do every year. They take all the patients out in wheelchairs and wheel them around the neighborhood. With up to eight patients and only two employees, there are going to be times when a patient pushes the button but an employee doesn't get to them as fast as the patient would like. This was always stressful for my mother. However, I constantly told her that if we wanted the level of care she was complaining to get, it would cost a lot more! If you find this place through an individual that refers it, be careful because they will want to charge you a finder fee even if they don't mention it to you. So be sure to ask if there is a fee involved. It could be up to $3000. I learned the hard way.

Do not send your family member there. They treated my elderly mother like a number, not a human…read morebeing. Though my mom spoke highly of one or two caregivers, manager, administrators/owners bullied her and left family members uninformed. Her physical and mental condition deteriorated rapidly. Be wary of affiliated care homes, Owners are related and will treat patients according to their ability to pay.

Right away I knew it was the place for my husband to live during the move. The grouphome is like my own house. It smells like home and my husband feels at home there. We have made this place my husband's permanent residence. Everyone is super nice and caring. Every time I go see my husband, he is happy and clean and well cared for. The care he received was unparalleled for this type of facility. The owners, Helen and George, are hands on. My father came to the facility, overweight, in poor health, lonely and depressed. Almost immediately after coming to The Lakes, his attitude changed, his health improved and he began to lose weight. After a few months, he was a completely different person. He was happy, healthy and once again engaged. I can't thank Helen and George enough for how they improved the last few years of his life. My dad has his own spacious room, and he gets three very healthy and delicious homemade meals a day. The home has a beautiful yard with lots of fruit trees. I'm so happy we found this wonderful home!
