My massage experience with Richard was the most thorough and therapeutic I have ever experienced. Recovering from recent whiplash, I asked him to concentrate on neck and shoulders and back. He was very knowledgeable about muscle groups and manipulating them to maximize release of the tight spots. He explained what he was doing; and taught me a lot about these areas. I was in desperate need of a massage. So, I popped in and scheduled a 90 minute combination with hot stones right away ($135). Best compulsory decision ever. The receptionist suggested I arrive 5-10 minutes before my schedule appointment time to fill out a short client info paper. It only took 5 minutes to complete and I was then introduced to Beth. Beth is amazing. She's been practicing for 12 years and is very knowledgable. Her technique is gentle but effective. I walked out of there feeling 100 times better. She aligned my hips, got rid of all my sore spots and was able to explain to me what she was doing and why. I learned a lot on 90 minutes. Beth's massage was the best I've ever had. My fiance and I booked a couple's massage on our trip out to finalize our wedding details. I read good things about this massage place, and decided to give it a try. It was my first massage ever, and our first couples massage. I was matched with Tyler, and my fiance was matched with a woman. I let him know that it was my first massage and that my shoulders were tight, and I've got to say it was incredibly awkward. He giggled as he told me to take the bra off but leave my "panties on". He was in general just very very awkward, and did not put me at ease at all. The massage was very rough, and to his credit, I should have spoken up about that. However, I later found that he focused exclusively on my legs and butt, and my husband did not get any work on his butt. In hindsight, I feel very uncomfortable about that because I also did not mention wanting work on my butt. At the end, I felt the massage therapist hold my hand and then about a minute later I realized they had put my hand in my fiance's hand and that's whose hand was holding. But that minute I thought Tyler was awkwardly holding my hand was just very uncomfortable. Needless to say, I will not be going back. read more

Had an anniversary couples massage here last weekend. Very nice! First time we've allowed a massage therapist to touch us in 18 months!! Emma and Jill both did a great job. Felt great afterwards. They wished us happy anniversary a few times which was thoughtful. Only suggestion I would make is to use real head pillow covers. They use a regular pillow case and it's bunched up in your face. Glad they use bleach to wash the pillow covers but not good to smell. I thought it was just me but my husband mentioned it too. Otherwise it was a great relaxing and thorough massage. read more

This was the nicest place I've ever been to have a massage. The service was excellent. The amenities were exceptional. You can arrive early and go into the sauna. You can sit in the lounge in front of the fire and enjoy tea. My massage was 90 minutes with a very nice young lady. I have a CBD massage for pain. It was helpful. She concentrated on my neck back, and shoulders where most of my pain was. They even had a robe warmer while I was on the table. So relaxing and calming. I highly recommend. read more

I had no idea that I was going to walk out of there having had THE BEST massage of my life. I practice a lot of self care and would say I get massage about once every six to eight weeks. Unfortunately, it was an expensive experience that reminded me about why I never went to spas for massages to begin with. Fiancé and I went in for a 60-minute couples massage while we were in Friday Harbor not too long ago. The whole thing was pleasant, and everyone did their job, but it wasn't what we were looking for. We don't normally get massages to feel pampered or relaxed -- we get massages to get fixed. We have a lot of muscle tightness from both sitting in the office all day and lifting weights, and we prefer a ton of pressure because that's what we need. The therapists who worked on us took it really easy even after we asked for increased pressure. When we scheduled the appointment, we made sure they knew we were looking for deep tissue, too. The lady who worked on me repeatedly asked questions like "Which part is tight -- here or here?" Wasn't she supposed to figure that out immediately by feel? It was odd. I don't know how much experience she had because I didn't ask, but judging by her questions, my guess is probably not a whole lot. When the massage ended and our therapists left the room, my fiancé and I found out that we were holding hands. (Yes, we were still lying on our backs in separate beds.) We were a bit baffled. We looked at each other and started giggling. Maybe it was supposed to be romantic and therapeutic or what-not, but it was a little much for us. We spent $190 plus tips that evening and felt very, very little improvement. It totally wasn't worth it for us. However, I wouldn't straight out say I wouldn't recommend it. I had the Earth, Water, Spirit spa treatment with Beth and she was AMAZING! The price for the 90 minute hot stone, Swedish and Reiki combo treatment was completely reasonable compared to what I am used to paying for in Seattle. Beth was very sensitive to all my requests (pressure/firmness, scent preferences, heat preference) and when she moved to the Reiki portion I tingled all over my body! I WISH she was somewhere in King County so I could see her more frequently than once a year, when I get to Friday Harbor. Definitely the highlight of my trip. PS. For the eco-nerds out there (like myself) I LOVE that she gave me my cup of water in a compostable plant-based "plastic" cup. read more

Had a truly sub par couples massage here a few months ago and was more than a little surprised by it given the positive reviews on here. The interior is simple which is fine but the massages themselves were completely underwhelming. My therapist Tyler did some version of healing touch which I did not ask for or pay for. But this involved resting his hands on every area he massages for at least 3-5 minutes per area (ie each arm, leg, back, etc) So when you add all that time up, half my massage was spent with the therapist just standing there not doing anything beyond resting his hands. It was bizarre and uncomfortable. He spent so much time doing this that I didn't even get a full body massage which is odd. For $100 a massage it was beyond disappointing. Will never go back and would not recommend. read more

I had a massage with Richard the last time I was in Friday Harbor and I had forgotten how awesome he is. Usually when I get a "vacation" massage it pales in comparison to my regular massage therapist and ends up being disappointing. That is definitely not the case with Richard. He intuitively knows, like Mindy, where my "trouble spots" are and I float out afterwards. What more can you ask for than an amazing 90 minute massage in one of the most beautiful places on earth? This capped off my daughters and my 4 day vacation on San Juan Island. Just approaching the island, I can feel my stress levels reduce and my blood pressure lower as I enter into my calm state in my most favorite place anywhere. But after a few days of trekking around the parks and trails and a glorious whale watching boat trip, it was time to tend to these tired, achy muscles. Richard balanced relaxing massage with some deep tissue work that targeted muscles I had no idea were so tight and sore. I live in Orange County, Ca (a day spa Mecca) and have had many, many massages. This was the best massage I've had. I'm a big girl, and usually a bit apprehensive going into a place that's new to me. This was a really bad massage. Honestly, it felt like the guy and lady masseus were out of gas. Neither me nor my friend on the massage felt much work being done during our respective massages. In fact, we both felt that they spent their time fussing about with stones and hot towels and less on actual deep tissue rehabilitation. We were disappointed to say the least. The massages were good. The facials were relaxing but not performed by a esthetician so basically a face massage. I got a foot and hand rub too. I booked a 60-minute, deep tissue massage in August 2011. It was $95 plus tip. I specifically asked for the masseuse to work primarily on my neck and shoulders. First, there was a fair amount of non-massage time included in the 60 minutes. I didn't time it but would guess probably 10-15 minutes were talking or getting set up or me relaxing afterwards. Second, there were literally two (short!) strokes of deep tissue massage on one shoulder -- that's it. She asked if the pressure was ok and I said it was ok (thinking she'd do more) but no, that was it. Third, she pretty much did the typically whole body stuff and didn't focus on my neck and shoulder as requested. It was a nice "light" massage but nothing like I expected or felt that I paid for. (Their basic massage is $85 for 60 minutes, so not a huge difference.) A couple of notes: I booked the massage on the same day as I received it so it may be that the person I got doesn't usually do deep tissue massage and they just gave her to me because she was available. I would've been ok with that if they'd told me it wasn't going to be deep tissue and didn't charge me for it. I've been here before (a couple years ago) and had a wonderful deep tissue massage and didn't feel like the time was wasted at all, so I guess it really depends on who you get. read more

I sighned up for a 60 minute Swedish massage. $85 + $15 tip I had Lisa and she was very proffessional and talented. One of the best I ever have had, so i was very pleased. She did an endless limb manuaver, for over a minute, both arms never let up the rubbing preasue in the crook of my right neck, She had some fancy choreorghy dancing aroud the table to maintain that endless pressure. My massage was so-so. I'm pregnant so I think people tend to get freaked out to massage to hard, so it was too soft for me. Not by any means a bad massage but for the price of have liked better. My husband had Beth and said it was one of the best massages he's had! So if you go, get Beth. We had entirely different experiences. The best massage I've ever had. It's a shame that I can't remember the masseuse's name, but I know it started with a B (I've seen someone named Beth mentioned in other reviews, so that may be her). In any case, she was so good I was just amazed. I prefer not to talk when I get a massage, and said that at the outset, so I was preparing myself to be disappointed when she didn't seem to register that I really, honestly did not want to be made to talk, but the work she did was superior to anything else I've experienced and when you consider how much more expensive most goods and services on the island are when compared to their mainland counterparts, the deal became all the more exceptional. A note: I calibrated my initial expectations on the appearance of the storefront, which is busily over-decorated. The individual decorative elements provide grace notes, but there's no sense of less-is-more. They pile too much on, but the massage eliminated all those considerations. read more

Getting a massage is always a crapshoot if you're seeing someone new so I was a bit worried when my husband signed me up for one at Lavendera while we were staying next door at the Earth Box Motel this weekend. The spa itself actually turned out to be as charming as the rest of the island. Very peaceful and relaxing. And then I completely scored by getting Miss Julia. She was awesome! She kept talk to a minimum, practiced great modesty draping, and has a gift for reading and responding to subtle body language during the massage. She hit everything- all the usual suspects plus feet, hands, face and scalp. Another plus- it was a full hour massage, not one of those '45 minutes + 15 minutes for showering and getting dressed'. If I lived on the island, believe me, I would be scrapping my daily latte habit to visit Miss Julia monthly. The prices are on the higher end but what isn't on the island? My recommendation: stay at Earth Box Motel, use the indoor pool and hot tub beforehand and then leisurely walk next door to the day spa. read more
