Looking down at the top set of steps
    Alana M.

Nadine C. and I were looking for something to do between Downtown LA and Koreatown. She found a check-in for these stairs and we agreed we needed a little bit of exercise so we could continue intaking more calories. If you come here, I would park on McDuff and walk up the stairs. It's easier for me to walk down stairs when I'm tired physically, than it is to climb them afterwards. If you prefer, you can park on Laveta Terrace Street and walk down first. There are 4 sets of stairs, which are broken up into 24+15+14+12 steps, totalling 55 steps. This is not at all challenging. You can always take a breather at each of the landings, like Nadine did. The steps are made of just concrete and are not decorated with tile or anything, so don't expect that. There are houses on both sides of the stairs. Have water handy and wear appropriate shoes. You never know what you'll need or want. You're only going to literally be steps from your vehicle, so it's not necessary to bring much with you. Plan to spend about 10 minutes here, if you want to climb them to say you've done them. If you want to climb them a bunch of times, you could get a good cardio workout. The view was okay. We were able to see the downtown skyline! I think any view is enhanced as the sun sets and the city lights start to turn on.

    Found it!

Climb 24 stairs... rest... 15 more...rest...14 up...rest... go up 12 more... to the end! Whew! That's how Alana and I made it up these stairs with no training! Haha! There are a set of stairs between two streets which pedestrians may use to get from one street to the other, instead of going around the block. These stairs are made of plain cement, unlike those beautifully tiled ones in San Francisco. This short round of cardio was a nice, easy exercise with a good view. It might look better at sunset with different lighting. Check it out!

The palm tree lined street at the top of the Laveta stairs is exceptionally beautiful during sunset.

Stairs in a local echo park neighborhood. They have nice sunset views overlooking Sunset (very punny, I know) and DTLA. But if you're looking for sunset views you're better off driving a bit to Angels Point. Other than that, just like many of the other stairs you'll find around Echo Park except often sprinkled with broken glass and hints of graffiti.

Routes are rotated regularly -- boulder routes change on Tuesdays and new rope routes go up on Thursdays and Fridays, so it always feels fresh and well maintained. They also host events and community gatherings from time to time, which gives the gym a really lively vibe. It doesn't feel like just another climbing gym -- it really feels like a community. Their yoga classes are also a little different from typical studios. Many of the instructors are climbers themselves, so the classes complement climbing and strength training really well. The yoga classes and fitness area are upstairs, and that section is for ages 14 and up. One of my favorite moments is after a shower, sitting in the dry sauna while the kids enjoy it too. Hearing them humming or chatting happily just makes me feel so happy -- moments like that remind me I'm really glad we come here. As a mom, I've visited other climbing gyms, but this place just has a different kind of energy. If you're looking for a climbing gym with a great community and well-maintained routes, I definitely recommend this place. Even though it's a bit farther for us, it's worth the drive.

I've also just come here with friends from time to time to climb and it's such a great experience. The staff are so nice and you will get a forearm and upper body workout forsure! Very beginner friendly so come out and try it! I highly recommend this place!

They offer both top-rope climbing and bouldering, and both require an orientation--which I appreciated as a first-timer. I was surprised by how many people were bouldering, from novices to very experienced climbers. There's also a small gym with basic equipment. Overall, it was a fun, spontaneous activity for a random free day--kind of like bowling, but more physical and engaging. Definitely requires some strength and problem-solving. Would absolutely come back!

Well, the 30 min class turned out to be only a 5 min introduction to the rules of the rock climbing place and the only technique taught was how to fall. The instructor hastily dismissed the kids and said "Have fun". That was basically it. i thought the class would cover more bouldering techniques. I have just pulled up the class description (see pic). Had I seen this while we were there, I would've spoken to a manager about this. This is not right at all. The instructor only spent 5 min with our kids. There was only so much the girls could do on their own with that inadequate 5 minute "lesson". It could have been a fun playdate if they were given more instructions so they could've done more than climbing up 3-4 steps on just the 2 easy routes. 1 star and not likely to return. You did not deliver what was promised and wasted our time and 25 bucks each. Poor business practice. Thumbs down.

I've been doing his at-home tension workouts during quarantine and they are SO intense. I've seen huge improvements in my strength and balance/stability. I had never worked with a trainer before (or even lifted weights!) so I felt like I had no clue how to start. Working with Medvis was the best choice I could've made. He is incredibly patient and motivational without being aggressive or overly demanding. If you're new to climbing, start working with him ASAP so you don't fear overhangs and create bad habits. Luckily they have a system here where they'll call the description of the car on the PA to move their car if someone parked inside needs to get out (trusting that people who did park behind log it on the clipboard at the entrance.) Gym feels stuffier and smaller too, and it was pretty crowded on a Thursday evening. Lots of overhang here compared to the Post. The ladder coming down from problems that require going over is intimidating for a beginner climber as there's no railing for a steep decline. Still was able to get in a decent number of climbs though on the other walls. All the other amenities are standard for a touchstone gym. Overall, it's alright compared to other gyms, but if you're a first timer or live nearby, it's nice and well kept. 3.5 stars would probably be more accurate imo, but I'll round up bc this place is better than non touchstone gyms Despite this gym being the closer drive, I prefer Pasadena or Torrance (15-20 min difference).
