Regarding emergency care treatment: Reading these reviews, combined with my own experience, the emergency care is somewhat mixed. My mother has had some falls, and, in those more severe cases, she received good care. However, in the case of a young woman's fractured/sprained ankle, a less severe situation, the care received was typical of the stories that make you never want to go to an Emergency Room. We waited almost 5 hours in the middle of the night and never saw a doctor and never were given any idea what to expect. We finally had to leave and wished we'd never bothered. Caring for the severe cases as a priority is what an ER should do ... and I assume the one doctor they had working had more important matters to attend to. However, Lawrence promotes its non-urgent emergency care as especially speedy. From their web page: 1) "Rapid Medical Evaluation When you visit the Emergency Center with a minor complaint such as a sore throat, earache or sprained ankle, you may be seen in the triage area very quickly by an MD, NP or PA and diagnosed, treated and discharged within about an hour. We are the only hospital in the Merrimack Valley providing this expert and speedy care, and our evaluations typically take place in 14 minutes or less." 2) Their web page also provides an "ER Wait time" which all night read as "15 minutes" though it is supposedly refreshed every 10 minutes. Together, those two blurbs hooked me, and we went in. My lesson: Don't expect anything special regarding non-urgent care. If the injury is traumatic, absolutely go ... what choice do you have anyway? Worst hospital to go in, staff doesn't have any courtesy towards patients and Drs take not one not two but three hours to see you and then never come back to even tell you how everything is. If you have any medical issues PLEASE don't go to Lawrence General Hospital go somewhere else you probably will get better treatment anyways. read more

If you want your loved ones to live don't bring them here. The care provided in the ICU is mortifying. Some of the nurses are SO RUDE and UNSAFE. Norine couldn't even answer a simple question I asked about my grandfather who I just love and care about more than anything. She told me she didn't have time to answer stupid questions (it was about a very important medication he takes daily). I also witnessed her walk in and out of multiple patient rooms without washing her hands or using hand sanitizer once. The nurses don't assess their patients, labs are not checked, proper interventions are not done in a timely manner. My grandfather was having an arrhythmia and no one was aware until I POINTED IT OUT! Go ANYWHERE but here. Don't let your loved ones be neglected and poorly cared for. read more

I had the misfortune of coming to this hospital because the EMT in the ambulance wouldn't transport my daughter to MGH. I found the nurses in the ER could care less about the alarms going off. I find an alarm going off in a patients room for 30 minutes to be excessive. The temperature in the room is 70*. You could get sick by just sitting in the cold. I spoke to the doctor once for approximately 3 minutes, no follow up!! I am amazed that this hospital is still open. Next time my daughter is going to be put in a car and driven to MGH, a real hospital. read more

I was here again. Seems like around this time of year I wind up here for one thing or another. Well today was quick, and the staff was nice. The doctor who saw me was really helpful and made the trip worth it. Even though the waiting room for the ER was full I was triaged in 15 mins, registered within 40 mins of that and then seen by a doctor and discharged within an hour. I gave birth to both my children here and choose LGH for any procedure because the care is just better. By no means perfect, but a MUCH better option than Holy Family, hands down and I've lived in this area all my life and have seen the changes to both facilities. Ok, it's in the asscrack of Lawrence and ok, the majority of the Spanish patients use the ER as their primary care for the slightest cold or ache, which can make it a nightmare, especially since they travel in packs of 6 or more (why can't 1 of the pack stay HOME with the children?!?), don't discipline their kids and let them run around wherever they go, with no consideration for ANYBODY, it's still a better option than Holy Family. The packs go to that ER as well. Can't escape them. Their birthing suites are gorgeous, the birthing staff are AMAZINGLY sweet, accommodating and make you as comfortable as possible. In regards to other services/procedures, the intake staff have always been friendly, quick and we've generally been treated well. And it's no secret in these here parts that the food's been better at LGH than HF since the 80s :) Those turkey breast sandwiches (real, carved turkey breast) with the herb spread in their box lunches just make you smile when you're in a hospital bed...or maybe it was just the tryptophan. Billing has never harassed us and almost 14 years ago, when my youngest was 9 months old, had a fever of 104.5 and the ER let us sit for 45 minutes without a glance after her pediatrician told us to go there immediately, they agreed I shouldn't pay a penny when I disputed the bill. Thank you for wonderful compassionate care. LGH saved my life, quite literally. I had a massive near-fatal PE April 2014. ICU and the floor staff, ED staff, cardiac cath folks, all amazing. The nurses are top notch. Thank you from my family and me--because of LGH I am alive today. The nursing staff was professional, compassionate, and wonderful. The aides were warm and helpful. The cardiac cath folks were compassionate and swift to get me on the table - thank goodness because my heart was failing and I would not have survived a trip into Boston. Dr. Bilazarian did the then-new ultrasonic clot-busting procedure, the first case to have it done at LGH, and I lived through something from which most people die. When you come to this hospital you're looking to be here for at least 5 hours. It's a horrible experience. Got here at 5 am and am still here. Around 7 am all of the sudden you hear a bunch of people that are put in their "sound proof rooms" and they awake realizing they're still here. I thought my daughter and I were the only ones, until 7 am rolled around. Ultra sound techs didn't even arrive till 930. What a terrible experience! This place deserves no stars, the ER is a shame, more like a zoo. You absolutely get no care, my one year old daughter had a fever of 101.4 and they made us stay in the room and wait for hours, while the nurse kept telling me it's ok if I wanted to leave and see her pediatrician in the morning, meanwhile they billed my insurance and took copay for no service at all.Patients in hallway in extreme pain with nobody to take care of them. I walked around and saw people lying around in hallway, no doctors, one guy had been waiting for 7 hours, this hospital ER should be sued,collecting patients to let them rot waiting for nothing until they leave on their own and then they bill insurance....pure shit hole and don't write me back to say I should call Maria patient advocate. Never in my life did my mother and I experience such loving Nurses and Doctors as we did during the 4 days and nights during my Father Charlie Carroll's passing. Everything imaginable was done to keep him comfortable and to support my mom and I during this trying and painful time. Nurses constantly did things to make us comfortable such as feeding us, talking to us and giving us unbridled love and caring. My father died peacefully with the support of staff and caring doctors who were there every moment. We were so glad to know that he had a painless passing and were given the strength to carry on. seemed ok, I was interviewing for a job and they never got back to me and seemed very disorganized, but what I initially thought based on review of materials about their QI Program was that it appeared to be a good place. I met with the staff and it was messy, cancellations and interviews without the people you would actually be working with. I have asked senior leaders in the quality department to get back to me about my application, and after several attempts I will call HR today to see what happened. They simply are not responding and the position is still listed. Who knows. It MIGHT be a good place. You can NEVER tell! I'm 21 weeks pregnant and have a bad cold and flu symptoms that's been getting worse for the past 3 days. The wait time was pleasantly quick from the waiting room to a "room," but I've been on a stretcher in the hallway since 4:48am and it's currently 8:03am. They never brought me into a room and I have yet to see a doctor. They only took my vitals and blood work and have just been waiting for the lab results and to be discharged. I'm not sure if the ER is short staff or have a specific system where they leave patients on a stretcher in the hallway since my condition isn't as severe as others that come to the ER, but the lack of communication between NP/Staff and the patients is frustrating. After waiting over 4 hours, I never got to see a doctor and I had to ask someone to get a nurse so they can read my chart to get an update. A random nurse responded that I could go home because I won't be seeing a doctor any time soon, after waiting for so long. From 4:48am to 8:21am, I was left on a stretcher in the hallway, never saw a nurse or a doctor, was never diagnosed or properly discharged, and only had my vitals taken. read more

On an early AM day this week I awoke to unusual pain in my chest, called 911 for an ambulance and within minutes they where at my house, what is outstanding is the Hospital sending a Cardiac Care Team to intercept the ambulance along its way to the hospital. This saved precious minutes, allowing work on me to begin immediately, and not having to wait till arrival at the hospital. Shortly after my arrival at the ER, I coded out - I DIED! Fortunately the ER team resuscitated me and I am ALIVE! It was an unusual event, expertly handled by this particular staff. I cannot ever say enough to thank this organization, some people may complain about this or that, I am more than pleased. Went there Monday evening, the nurses, and nurse's aids were great. However the doctors leave a lot to be desired! ER was total chaos. Very difficult to get any answers from doctors, when I did they conflicted with what the previous doctor said. Went there bevause I had a blockage in my small intestine. They found I also had a low hemoglobin level. I explained to them that it was due to having donated double red cells to Childrens a couple of days before. Well this totally baffled them and they kept runing tests to try to find out why my hemoglobin was so low. Everytime I saw a new doctor they did not know tgat I had dpnayed double reds because it had never been noted on my chart/record and they also had no clue as to what double reds are. They kept me for almost three days. Every time I asked when I was going to be discharged I recieved a vague answer and the reason for extending my stay kept changing. Finally I demanded to be released and attitudes changed, I was now a person not grata, they couldn't get rid of me fast enough, had be sign AMA paper covering their butts. I gave birth to my first child here this past June. I am SO happy that we chose Lawrence General Hospital. The nursing staff was amazing! I came in for an induction and was greeted by a smiling nursing staff. My nurse was Aline, and she was so kind and knowledgeable. Explained everything that was going on and made me feel so comfortable. The night nurse (I forget her name) Was so kind as to bring in a bigger stretcher for my husband to sleep on instead of the provided chair. When I was about to deliver, my son came a little early. A stand by doc came and and helped out until my doctor could arrive. The room was clean and spacious. Very happy. Postpartum was also wonderful. The only negative I have is that the postpartum rooms could be nicer, homier. The nurses were experts in their trades, and cared for my whole family so well. I took advantage of the lactation consultants, who were very patient with my first time jitters, and my sons tendancy to bite me (ouch) and or fall asleep at the breast. Dietary was also pleasant and the food was great. Housekeeping came in twice a day to clean up the bathroom and empty trash. I will be having all of my children here! read more

My 86 year old father was left waiting for a bed. with virtually no medical attention for 12 hours in the ER after having been released back to his nursing home from the very same ER the previous day. To add insult to injury, it was the HOSPITAL itself who yanked him out of his nursing home bed and had him rushed back at 4AM (less than 12 hours after he was sent home.) after discovering the blood culture done the previous day had revealed a dangerous blood infection. The lack of communication between departments-and their inability to keep track of his previous medical records for treatment at their facility was mind boggling. The nurses were either indifferent ,frantic or downright rude. Hospital staff looked in on him a total of 2 times, without my having to hunt them down. I found myself having to help my sick father use his urinal ,trying to clean him up after an accident, having to hunt down someone to help him when he was sliding out of his bed, searching for blankets to keep him warm when he was shivering like a leaf hour after hour, getting liquids into him as he was and had been the previous day dangerously dehydrated........... Disgraceful, I have been in quite a few hospitals with my aging parents over the last 3 years, never have I experienced such a callous lack of regard for patient care.by such an inept group of medical "professionals" read more

Ive been to LGH two times for two completely different things and both experiences were horrible i was just there this past Sunday 7/25 and i wasnt feeling good let them know i think might have contacted covid the response was so outrageous that i had to ask her the receptionist to repeat herself when she said i would have sit in a waiting room full of people for 6 hours. They would be willing to put people at risk instead of giving me a covid test and sending me on my way. instead of being as irresponsible as they are i had no choice but to walk out of there and go home and wait for the next where i travelled all the way to Boston just to get seen that hospital is terrible thanks to this situation i much rather take my chances anywhere else than to go there ever again. the covid virus is ramping back up and i didnt understand how but if their treating potential covid patients like this is not a mystery. I've had multiple horrible experiences here with rude staff, lack of knowledge, no communication between anyone, rude, ignore you, and lack of professionalism. My most 2 recent was for an Ovarian Cyst removal and a panic attack. For my Ovarian cyst removal, they did a negligent job and messed up and punctured my kidney. I was hospitalized for 5 days in horrible pain. The only upside were the beautiful souls of the inpatient nurses. However it did always take a lifetime to get somebody to come in when i pressed the red button. Contemplating suing for the Malpractice. My second experience was a panic attack where I called the hospital to JUST talk to somebody to calm me down and they ended up bombarding my house with police officers and ambulances and taking me to the hospital, basically tricking me into thinking they were going to help, but they kept me hostage and gave me no reasons. The nurse told me i called her a bitch, when i was in a state of PANIC of course people will say things they don't mean. Being rude, ignoring me when she was at her desk and i called out for assistance (She was 3 feet away) and initially having security strap me down because i was "Making a scene" for asking if i could have some Bendaryl to sleep, when all i wanted was to be home in my bed. I was discharged at 1:00pm the next day. It was a pointless visit and i would have been better off NOT GOING. They always make things worse. Lawrence General Hospital, please do better. read more

The quality of care at Lawrence General is not very good. My chief complaint is that there seems to be a HUGE lack of communication/coordination between the ER and other departments. Both my husband and my father were taken to Lawrence General for emergencies (separate occasions) and both were admitted. Because of a lack of communication, my father went two full days without eating there because they kept screwing up his surgery times. The nurses were unfriendly and if you asked them any questions, they seemed to resent having to respond. At the last minute his surgeon went on vacation and another guy had to fill in. The surgery went well, but the way they treated my father was really disappointing. My husband also experienced the same issues. In the ER, nobody addressed me or told me what was happening (what tests he was going to have, what came next, etc.) and when a nurse moved my husband and he started sweating and turning white from the pain, I went to the nurses station to asked where my husband's nurse went and if a doctor was being called back and this other nurse said "I'm not treating your husband" and then I asked "So if I have a question, who should I ask?" and she said "I can relay a question", so I asked her again what was happening and she said "The nurse already told you she was going to find a doctor" in a snide tone, so I said "Why would I be out here asking you where the nurse went if I knew?" When my husband finally was admitted and got to a room, it took 4 hours to get him pain medication (he fell 25 feet off a ladder), he went 10 hours before anyone thought to give him an IV for fluids (which I brought up 5 hours earlier) since he wasn't allowed to eat or drink. It took them 3 hours to get him a urinal since he wasn't able to get up to use the bathroom. The only reason he got anything at all was because I asked, repeatedly. He had a number of deep cuts on his hands, elbow, etc. and when I left, they still had not been cleaned out (after 8 hours). I just called the hospital to see how my husband is doing and all the nurse said was "fine". I asked her if he had used the urinal and she said no and it was only when I told her it had been since 10 a.m. the following day since he went that she thought to check on him. It was like he was dumped from the ER into a room but nobody knew anything about him or what was going on with him. The nurses all seem tired, overworked, and unhappy. Even the guy at the snack bar was rude and unfriendly. There is clearly a pervasive lack of customer service culture at the hospital and I can only wonder if because many poor and uninsured patients use the hospital the staff feel like they don't have to be kind, friendly, or communicative. It is a very sullen atmosphere and even the doctors seem miserable. Nobody is communicating with anyone and the obvious lack of coordination between departments is bound to have serious negative consequences I have never been to a hospital that treated its patients so poorly and with such a lack of regard. I will avoid using this place again. read more

Terrible terrible terrible. If you have any kind of pain or emergency please go somewhere else...went in emergency for an UTI issue. First one I ever had and was bleeding terribly. Waited nearly an hour or two until finally I was taken care of. The nurses were nice but the Doctor that saw me was very rude, she asked me if I WAS SURE I HAD AN UTI AND NOT MY PERIOD...even the lady at the front desk who isn't a doctor even suspected it was an UTI. Worst service ever. I came to receive vaccines and was charged $150 for an ER visit. I was supposed to come 3 more times to receive additional vaccines. Went here for mental health issues. So I had to stay a little while and my mother came with me. She stayed in the room with me all day and night and all of sudden by 4am I awoke to my mom freaking out cause she found a BED BUG! On the bed I was staying in. This is soooo nasty and should never be allowed at hospitals. Coming in for one thing and leaving with a million other problems. At another time I was staying there again for mental health. I was only 16 years old having terrible anxiety they were giving me Ativan for it but I needed something stronger they ended up giving me Xanax without even asking my mother but only the doctor who was working at the time. When I suffer from severe addiction that's just not right. Me being 16 I didn't know better. After me being at the hospital I had to be tapered off the Xanax cause you can't just start a drug like that. THE STAFF DID KNOW INFACT ABOUT MY ADDICTION AS WELL. Just made no sense. read more

On 12/4 Dr. Thakur performed a multi level lumbar fusion. From the moment I walked into Lawrence General the staff was courteous and helpful. Once I was moved to pre-op they kept my wife and I infomred every step of the way. The procedure was more extensive than expected, and Dr. Thakur was able to explain this issues in a manner I could understand. During a difficult 4 day stay, the nursing staff proved to be capable, knowledgeable and above all compassionate. I can not speak highly enough about Dr. Thakur, the hospital staff, and the facility in general. read more

If I could give a zero to this establishment, then I would. Before I write my review on what happened today, I wanted to add background. I was a previous employee underneath Sutherland, a company that was in charge of the admittance department through Lawrence General. I worked there for a month, and from the second I was hired I was immediately uncomfortable. One situation pertains to my complaint from today. I was talking in front of Virgen, one of the admittance representatives who was in charge of training me. I was going through a tough time where I was deciding what I wanted my personal beliefs to be. I am Jewish by birth, but never too much by practice. I had made a comment in front of Virgen and some other coworkers about how I was going to start to wear a yamaka to work. Virgen then said "If someone was to wear a yamaka in Lawrence, then people would make fun of them." Then she proceeded to say, "Oh, those Jewish guys and their funny little curls." I was uncomfortable. I was worried for my future at the establishment. I was conflicted, because I wanted to stick up for my heritage but I also didn't want to lose my job. So I said nothing directly to Virgen. I went to my boss at Lawrence General. I told him of the comments Virgen had said to me, and he told me that if I wanted him to that he would pull her aside and give her some coaching. I didn't want that because I had only been there for a week, and if coaching was done with her about being antisemitic then she would know I had complained. My boss didn't take the affirmative routine action of informing the supervisors of my complaint. So I did nothing as well. Finally, I was sick of the treatment. I said something to Jillian(the first shift supervisor) and Ashley(supervisor), who then asked if I had approached Virgen about this. I said I hadn't, so I did just that. I explained myself. How I'm a refugee of the United States. How my family almost died in the Holocaust. How maybe I did take the comments a little personally, but there was reason to this. Virgen didn't care. She told me she wasn't the kind of individual who shows people empathy. That I did take it too personally. No apology left her lips. Jillian and Ashley asked me if the conversation was sufficient. I said no. I explained how I felt insulted. How I didn't feel as if I was heard. Then, Jillian proceeded to tell me that she agreed with Virgen that I was taking this too personally. Finally, I couldn't handle the discrimination anymore. I left the company. Today, one of my friends was going to Lawrence General to see if someone was a patient there. She wanted me to come in with her. I walked in, and immediately saw that Virgen was at the front with another coworker. My friend and I had to wait for them to handle a phone conversation before being able to be helped. I didn't want to give them the satisfaction of giving a reaction towards how they treated me. So I stayed silent. I was distracted by my phone. My friend and I leave the establishment, and I notice I am receiving a call from Lawrence General on my personal cell phone. I answer, and Jillian is on the line. She immediately starts the conversation with saying, "Do you have a problem with Virgen?" I was immediately confused, wondering what the problem was. She then started accusing my friend of video taping Virgen, and reminding me that it was illegal to video tape an associate of Lawrence General. I was appalled. I had no idea what was going on. I wasn't the one with the phone. I wasn't the one recording anything. I wasn't saying anything rude. I gave no disrespect towards Virgen. My friends phone was simply malfunctioning and the flashlight kept on going off towards their direction. Yet, I was the one that took the blame. My other friend was in the car with me, and she noticed how upset I was. I gave her my phone because her tone was unnecessary and disrespectful. She then asked Jillian in the kindest way, why she was treating me like this. Jillian then proceeded to respond rudely, and started telling my friend to give me the phone. That I was going to be talking to security. That I was banned from ever coming to this hospital. That I broke a policy, and I am no longer welcome there. I am the primary care giver to my disabled mother and grandmother. My grandmother has respiratory heart failure, kidney failure, sleep apnea, a heart murmur, and diabetes. For something that I did not do, I am now banned from bringing her there. If she is brought there by ambulance, I am banned from even being able to visit her at the hospital. I am infuriated. I am appalled. I am confused. This is 2016, and antisemitism still exists. Virgen and Jillian should be ashamed of themselves for the way they handled themselves towards me, and Sutherland should be ashamed to have employees like that working in the admittance department.
