What horrible people. Our puppies were dying because the mother couldn't produce enough milk. All we needed to do was get some food in them with a feeding tube (we just moved and couldn't find our normal ones). But they refused to help. They just shrugged and said "not our problem". Love this place! I've adopted 2 cats now, one who was 5 months, and one who was 13 weeks. Staff is super sweet and very helpful, they will answer any question you ask. My only critique is that the hours are wrong. they don't open until 12. I was very disappointed when i showed up at 9 and they told me i couldn't go in until 12 :( read more

Scheduled my dog for a spay there. I had to schedule about 3-4 months in advance as they were very booked. No problem there, gave me plenty of time to plan for the surgery! Check in process was quick and easy and the staff was all very friendly. My girl was ready to go right when they said she would be. All around they made it a very smooth and easy process. It would of taken people an hour to get in to even see dogs or cats and the farther back in line nothing be left. Bad setup. Not worth standing an hour for me. This is a wonderful organization that takes good care of an awful lot of animals and does so with a very small budget, a lot of volunteer help and the support of the community. Our lives were permanently changed when we adopted "Taffy" over ten years ago, a young dog that previously suffered an abusive life under another owner (see her photo, she's a canine supermodel!). Our daughter was very young and wanted a dog. I initially objected, but agreed. And then we met her. Love at first sight. Lives changed. For being a shelter in a relatively small town, LHS does a great job with the resources they've got. I visited the shelter with my boyfriend shortly after Christmas to adopt my rat, Bowie. The boyfriend had come in a week before to put in an application, and he was met by a friendly staff member who showed him to the room where they keep bunnies and "pocket pets." The woman working in the room with the smaller animals (he didn't get her name, unfortunately) was extremely knowledgeable about the pets she was caring for and answered all his questions, giving him info on Bowie's background and how to care for him once he was brought home. Bowie was being treated for an upper respiratory infection and fleas at the time of his adoption, and the shelter offered to keep him there while he finished treatment. Since I'm a vet tech, I decided to take him home and continue treatment on my own, but I was impressed that they were willing to keep him there until he was back to full health. A lot of shelters try to push their animals out the door as fast as possible, regardless of their condition. It's good to know LHS does no such thing. When we went back to get Bowie and take him home, everyone at the front desk was really nice. They brought him up while I signed his paperwork and readily gave me copies of his medical records when I requested them. When I move into a bigger place and am ready to adopt another dog, I will definitely be coming back to LHS. They know what they're doing, and you can tell they really care about the animals in their charge. read more

I am glad to have the Lawrence Humane Society in the area. They are a no kill shelter that treats their animals well and receives volunteers to assist. I've found them to be organized and helpful and whats more, I found my dog there! They shelter runs tests on the dogs to get an idea of what kind of home would best work for the dog/cat, as well as give all prior information gained from the other shelters and pass it on. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have found out the exact breed of dog I now have. I recommend them. read more

This is the best humane society I have been to yet! First off the adoption process was a breeze, unlike other humane societies that do everything to keep you from adopting the dog. The (counseling) was just me in a room playing with the dog and asking a lady questions, then telling her I wanted the dog. I was out of there 5 minutes after making the decisions. They even let me adopted the dog while I was living in a college dorm (ESA). I also volunteered there a couple times and it was very straight forward. I would definitely recommend the drive if you don't want to go through the hassle of big humane societies. Also! They are asking for donations to build a bigger building right now!! I am posting this a few years after I dealt with the Lawrence Humane Society and the only reason I am giving them a mid range rating is because after my unpleasant encounter with them they actually used my suggestions to make it a more positive experience. But here goes my encounter with them. We had a dog named Scruffy who would get loose in the backyard and he could actually climb chain link fences. He really wasn't my dog but an ex girlfriend of mine brought him in and left him when she left. My son liked Scruffy so we kept him. After about 2 years, my then girlfriend had a friend over and she let Scruffy out in the backyard without putting him on his chain and Scruffy took off. My son was devastated and we searched all night and never found him. So the next day we went around in the daylight, put up flyers, we even went to the Lawrence Humane Society handed the guy named Craig a flyer and they said they hadn't seen Scruffy but would keep an eye out for him. So everyday for like 3 weeks we would call or personally stop by the Lawrence Humane Society to see if a dog had been found and and everyday for 3 whole weeks the answer was always "NO". And keep in mind, every time we stopped by the same guy was working behind the counter and his name was Craig. And Craig's favorite word was "NO", No, he hasn't seen Scruffy and No, dog like Scruffy has come in. So we gave up. Then maybe another week and a half goes by and I get this call at like 2pm from the Lawrence Humane Society, they say they have my dog Scruffy and have had him for over a month and I have until 5pm to get Scruffy that day or they were going to put him down. So I take off work to drive 25 miles to the Lawrence Humane Society and they can't release Scruffy until the City of Eudora "Fines" are paid for Scruffy getting loose. I was like "You couldn't have told me that over the phone so I could stop off there FIRST!" I was furious, keep in mind its 2:30pm and Scruffy will die a 5pm. So we fly on the highway back to Eudora, and the hillbilly morons behind the counter up there charge me $145 but they won't give me the release form until I speak to a cop, I was getting furious so I have to go meet this cop who has no idea why they sent me to him in the first place. He was cool, he said apparently they wanted him to lecture me on not letting my dog loose but he said we could just go back up there and get the release form. So I fly back up to the hillbilly moron Eudora City Office, and me calling them morons is me being nice, this Pam Schmidt lady was a straight up B. She still won't give me a release form because I have to go to the vet and prepay a vaccination shot for Scruffy. I was beyond mad, I was like "What is it with you f*cking people not give out all the information at once? Don't you think it would have saved precious time IF YOU TOLD ME THAT BEFORE WE WENT AND SAW THE POLICE OFFICER SO WE COULD GO TO THE VET AFTER THE OFFICER AND COME BACK WITH YOUR LIST COMPLETE?" I think I called her an idiot. So we went to the Eudora vet, paid $25 for a shot that Scruffy would never get, took the receipt back to the hillbilly morons at the Eudora City Office and Pam the B handed me the release form and I flipped them off when I walked out the door. So we made it to the Lawrence Humane Society at 4:30pm. We get there and Craig is behind the counter and I just tear into that moron, I am loud and I am furious, I can't say everything I actually said to this Craig guy because it had alot of cuss words but I was like 'Everyday, EVERYDAY WE CALLED, WE STOPPED IN, WE ASKED IF YOU HAVE SEEN OUR DOG SCRUFFY FOR 3 WEEKS AND THE WHOLE TIME HE WAS HERE AND THE WHOLE TIME *I point my finger at him* YOU TOLD US NO EVERYTIME.' His reply back was that Scruffy was in a different building and if a person didn't ask to go to that building he wasn't obligated to allow us back there. I got even more mad, this time I was yelling so loud that literally the animals went quiet. I told him that was a dumb answer and because of him my son's dog almost got put to sleep. I called him a dumbass, every name in the book. The manager came out and wanted to calm us down and me and my girlfriend went and talked to the manager while my son stayed as they had brought out Scruffy. The manager at first was very defensive saying that we didn't do our due diligence in inquiring about Scruffy until I whipped my phone at her and told her to look at the call logs on my phone and handed my girlfriend's phone also and told her to look at hers as well because I had logs that showed that EVERYDAY for 3 weeks we called the Lawrence Humane Society and everyday we were told "NO, they haven't seen Scruffy" when he was there the whole time. They wanted to charge me kennel fees and neutering fees, I told them I would pay for the neuter but IN NO WAY IN HELL WAS I PAYING KENNEL FEES WHEN I CAN PROVE THAT SCRUFFY WAS IN THERE CARE THAT LONG WHILE WE CALLED EVERYDAY. read more

It's nice to know the Lawrence Humane Society lacks communication with all of the vets that allow a free check up on an animal you adopted after 10 days. Just got screwed out of $24 for a medication the Humane society was supposed to cover but won't just because I got it from my vet. No refund from Jarrett's Small Animal Clinic either because they "mixed" the antibiotic already. They also euthanize their animals. They are not a "no kill shelter". If you don't believe me then look at their job openings. Says "must be able to perform or assist in euthanasia." read more

I know it's practically blasphemy to leave a negative review of a chapter of the Humane Society, and believe me, I DO care about animals. However, this chapter is horrific. They are completely condescending and rude, and treat you like a total jerk for even considering adopting an animal. That kind of attitude would be fine, if this were a no-kill shelter, but it's not. They DO euthanize. They also overcharge for all the items they sell. There is a huge mark-up. I would rather they be honest about it and make some kind of note about how the extra profit goes towards running the shelter, but apparently that's too much to ask. I will never, ever go here again, unless someone is holding a gun to my head, and even then, I'd try to persuade the gunman to go to the shelter in Ottawa first. read more

The shelter is amazing! They truly honestly care for the animals and their well-being, and try so hard to treat each animal with love and respect, and find them excellent homes. The staff care greatly for animals and do a wonderful job recruiting volunteers to help them out. If you ever find yourself wanting a fluffy companion, please do NOT go to a pet store!!! The humane society should ALWAYS be the only place you go! They not only have the obvious cats and dogs, but bunnies, rodents, and other small critters. And they always need donations, not just of money, but of items, too. You can check their website or call to see what they currently need, but things like soap, towels, laundry soap, cat and dog food, etc are almost always on the list. Once again, check with them because they like specific brands that they've found work best. But a great idea for the holidays is to get your friend or fam together and donate a sum to the shelter, or buy some supplies for them. It's a great way to give back to a local non-profit that works so hard to keep our strays well cared for and loved as they transition to new homes. I have volunteered here for years, although my current work schedule doesn't mesh with their volunteer hours. But if you want to help care for animals (walking dogs, petting cats and bunnies, etc) you should call them and sign up to volunteer! read more
