I took my 15 year old Boston terrier to Dr. Lewis because she was suffering from incontinence with horrible smelling urine, and a bloated belly amongst other things. dr. Lewis sent me and my dog away telling me she looked beautiful and nothing was wrong with her. No labs for her urinart issues were done at all, I left pretty disappointed, knowing that in fact, something was very wrong with her, took her to another vet and they confirmed that she had had Cushing's disease. The Boston terrier I had before that I had put down by Dr. Lewis and it was the worst most horrible traumatizing experience I have ever had putting a dog down. I've given this office many chances to redeem their self and will never return again. read more

My appointment could not have gone any smoother. I walked in at around 11 with my cat and the receptionist was immediately attentive. No pages of paperwork for me to fill out, she just asked some questions and it took about a minute to get all the information she needed. When I brought my cat into the vet minutes later he got right to the point and told me she needed a shot for her worms. I had to hold her down but he was so gentle I don't think she even felt her shot, she just let him do it even though she was trying to look around. Best of all, it was 16 for the appointment+shot. And how long was I there for? 15 minutes! I had never been here before but if my cat ever has any issues I'll be back. read more

The vet and his receptionist are kind people, but I will not be returning under any circumstances. This vet does use computers- all records are on paper, and they did not accept the records from our previous veterinarian. This was immediately a red flag to me that there was no interested in my cat's previous medical history. There were also no vet techs or assistants- the vet had me hold my own cat during shots. As I am in no way trained in how to properly hold a cat safely during shots, I was worried I would hurt her and she repeatedly squirmed out of my grip repeatedly and bit me and the vet. He was clearly frustrated and kept telling me to hold my cat tighter. I'm sure it's cheaper to go here, but in my opinion it's better to spend a little more money and make sure you have someone willing to spend a little more time reviewing the medical history and having a trained staff help with the procedures. read more

I prefer being in the room during the duration of our visits, compared to other vets we have had that take the animal away for care. When we had to put my cat to sleep, he injected her to stop her heart without putting her to sleep. It was the most traumatizing thing I had ever seen, and I am glad I asked to be in the room so that I could witness and raise awareness about the way they put down animals. It's been a year since this happened and the image is still in my head. I was told they were "old fashioned" here, but I never would have guessed they would have injected her without putting her to sleep first. Once more, Dr. Lewis and his receptionist Brenda have proven to be some of the most caring, compassionate vets in town for me. When my cat Pablo suffered two urinary blockages, Dr. Lewis unblocked him twice without doing unnessary tests or labwork to keep my costs down, and let him go home "to be less stressed". This time around, I found my beloved 14 yr old cat Ymirs lying in his own body fluids, mostly non-responsive and unable to lift his head or get up, I thought "stroke?" and rushed him up to the office, where Dr. Lewis confirmed "probably blew a blood clot, which is similar to a stroke." He very kindly guided Ymirs to a peaceful end, with a simple injection, and Brenda "held my emotional hand" while I took Ymirs back out. Dr. Lewis has also done a very low-cost spay for a shelter kitty we adopted a few years ago, as he was one of the few Lawrence vets who accepted the shelter voucher. Never had a problem with her after the surgery and she healed up in no time. If you are worried about the high costs of veterinary care, Dr. Lewis is great with helping keep your beloved pets in good health. The only reason he doesn't get five stars is that he's a bit behind the times with pain relief for cats, but often there are procedures that just don't seem to warrant dosing a cat with medications. read more

Very nice people working here. They accepted the shelter's voucher for a free exam for my newly adopted kitten, as well as provided me with very reasonable rates for my rabies and tapeworm shots. A couple months later, I found a stray kitten. They gave him a free exam, as well as a free month of Frontline. Their spay/neuter rates are extremely affordable, as well. You can tell that Dr. Lewis and his staff really care about animals. I highly recommend this place! read more

Lewis Veterinary Clinic is exactly what Lawrence needs! When you walk inside, you will notice it hasn't been updated since probably the 80s, but that also means Dr. Lewis is able to keep prices down. I appreciate that Dr. Lewis listens and won't make me do unnecessary tests. He will tell you exactly what he is thinking, and doesn't BS you at all. If your pet needs routine care and you don't have a lot of money to spend, come here! He will also let you make payments. If my pets had a serious condition or cancer, I would probably take them somewhere else, but for routine shots, and mild or non life-threatening illnesses, this place is perfect! read more

My cat got attacked by a dog and had to have her leg amputated. With the emergency vet bills and amputation, it was going to be over $5000. I was mentally preparing myself to have to put my baby to sleep. Then I called Lewis Vet Clinic and they told me they could do it for about $800. They saved her life and she is doing well! The receptionist (I think her name is Brenda?) was very caring and encouraged me to call at any time with questions or to check in and see how she was doing. I drove 45 minutes to bring my cat there and would definitely do it again. read more

we love this place! they are quick and easy and absolutely love to care for your animals. the doctor knows what he's doing and is easy to work with. we've been there probably 4 times and each time we were in and out within 20 minutes. they accept cash, check, and card payments! i am a college student and don't have the money to pay for crazy vet bills, im so glad i found this place! i brought in my kitten for her 6mo shots and it cost $20.00, my puppy had a uti and the visit + meds cost around $30.00, and recently my kitten had tapeworms and the visit + meds cost about $15.00. this clinic truly cares about your pets and are not trying to empty your pockets. this clinic does not require appointments and is walk in only. there was only one time they were busy when we came in and even then we only waited 20 ish minutes and as soon as we got seen, doc was in and out within 5 minutes. highly highly highly recommend!!!! read more

Do NOT go to this place!!! I do NOT recommend anyone to go to this clinic at all, if you care about your pet family member!!! When I took our young beloved German Sherpard to neuter him, they told me to pick him up at 3pm on the day of and when I got there to pick him up, the receptionist Brenda said the doctor wants him to stay overnight to watch him for any bleeding. She was very adamant that Maximus was awake and doing fine and told me to go home to pick him up the next morning. It was as if I was not allowed to see Max at all the day. When I came to pick Max up at 10am the next morning, the receptionist told me she found him passed in his cage at 730am. No one called at all as soon as they found him deceased nor did they perform any kind of medical measures to save his life. I was in SHOCK when they told me at the desk at 10am. When the receptionist took me to see the Max's body, his head was hanging off the cage, with no towel or anything under him or over him to cover. When my parents and I talked to Dr. Lewis, he informed us that Dr. Nottingham did the procedure and he was just there to help with sedation. The clinic could not even give us the anesthesia medicine list and was not organized at all and the building was old!! it was Not at all like what the website says. The clinic was rude in all the explanation of what had happened to Max. no real explanation and no one was there at night to watch him at all!! What was the point of keeping him at the clinic overnight if there was no one there with him??? My family began to question whether Max made it at all after the procedure. Max could have been safer with us at night. I had to call dr. Nottingham myself to find out what happened and he could not even tell me anything step by step nor provide me with any medication list. If Max was awake after the anesthesia, we cannot imagine the thought of him being there alone at night in pain or feeling abandoned. Both doctors were unprofessional in communication and never offered us an apology for their malpractice and negligence. they told us that it was not their fault that Max died. Our family cannot fathom at all on how a veterinary clinic could respond to a situation like this: NO HEAER AT ALL!!! The Lewis Veterinary Clinic needs to be investigated on how they operate as a clinic. Our Maximus was a very gentle, beautiful, sweet, loyal, intelligent, energetic and kind pet! He brought us so much joy in our hearts and we are missing him tremendously. He was taken from too soon and too sudden. Gone too soon and so young. Do NOT Go to This Clinic!!! This clinic is very old fashioned. There are only two people who work there from what I can see--the receptionist and the old vet. They don't like appointments and prefer walk ins. While the receptionist and the vet are friendly enough, they don't use any kind of computer systems, including microchip scanners and records, and aren't really a full service vet clinic. If money is an issue, definitely take your pet there, especially for medications (got my pup's meds for half the price I was paying in KC). If your pet has any kind of chronic problem, serious condition, or you want more thorough attention given, I'd recommend going somewhere else that is a little more updated. Giving them three stars, as each time I've been there for minor things (updating shots/nails trimmed), I haven't had any issues (outside of communication of old records from my vet to them, and having to assist the vet with holding my pets while they got shots/nails trimmed because they don't have vet techs), just be aware that you get what you pay for. read more

I can't sleep this experience has been so upsetting. We took our pug into Dr. Lewis be out to sleep today and after calling to check prices and to make sure they were available we were able to just walk in without an appointment. We were there maybe 15 minutes. Receptionist said it would be $75 to cremate him. We went into the room, Dr Lewis said absolutely nothing except asked how much our dog weighed. He didn't explain anything that was going to happen or give any indication that he was sympathetic. He came back with a shot and before I knew it he and the receptionist were holding our dog down administering the shot. I didn't even have a chance to get my 12 year old daughter out of the room, all I could do was hold her up against the wall and cover her ears, but we could still hear him crying. Once the shot was given I asked how long it takes to take affect and Dr said he's gone and walked out of the room. We were shocked and stunned and feel completely violated and cheated with this experience. After we said our goodbyes we went out to pay the receptionist and she told me it was $175 instead of the $75 she said when I came in. She neglected to tell me there was a $70 fee for the drugs and $30 office visit. We are going to spread the word about this experience and will never step foot in that office again. read more

I was new to Lawrence and I found Dr. Lewis to be a straight shooter; no unnecessary test and extra charges. I made the mistake of trying another vet and 500 bucks later my dog is no better. Never take your animal to Dr. Lewis. We were established clients with a 15 year old yorkie. We called his answering service at 9pm at night due to our dog being in an extraordinary amount of pain, not able to stand, but unable to get comfortable and crying for an hour straight, and frankly on his way out. We called to have him put down, but Dr. Lewis (after our second call to the answering service, finally got connected) refused and told us to give him aspirin, didn't even ask questions. You choose your own profession, and being a veterinarian means you have to respond to issues when it's not business hours. Don't just write your clients off. Totally unimpressed. read more

Hey may be cheap, yes. BUT if you want good care for your animal DO NOT go there. Starting with his secretary, she was MORE THAN EXTREMELY rude, disrespectful, you name it. Seems like she has sat in that same chair since she was hired back in the 60's. She just sits in her chair and barley makes eye contact and rolls her eyes whenever she gets the chance. She has no idea what is going on, or doesn't even care what is going on honestly. She has gotten things mixed up on more than one occasion with myself and 2 other people with the same last name. Dr. Lewis is a nice man, but is getting old and still practices older ways. He can barley see, and seems to treat my dog with the same type of medicine every time I have went. So I now after moving to another vet, I have no idea what has or has not been done to my dog, vaccination wise or flea, tick and heart worm medicine ETC. I literally have ONE Heart worm test on my records from 2014, and that IS ALL! If you want a safe environment for your dog and actually care about them to live a long life and to be healthy, DO not go here. If you don't care and are just going to be cheap, then by all means be my guest. OH and if Brenda (the receptionist( cuts the UPC off the box, they are sending in the rebate and keeping it for themselves! Ask for it to be sent to you! read more

They are kind and helpful and I really did appreciate that they take walk-ins with my kind of schedule. The problem is they are disorganized, don't know what kind of shots to give dogs and can't seem to diagnose simple conditions. The actual place is filthy, the receipts they give have little to no information on what shot, procedures, etc have been done. The vet actually told me my dog was allergic to stinging neddle when it was actually a minor staph infection..... Really? Cheap is NOT the way to go with your dogs, it's actually better to spend the money upfront at a good vet and have things taken care of correctly rather than go cheap and the vet not know what they're doing. I took one of my dogs to my current vet (not Lewis) and Lewis didn't even give them all their basic required shots! My vet had to call Lewis to try and figure out what was actually on the receipt because the hand writing was so poor and the abbreviations weren't known for the kind of shots my dog received. Lewis is known around town to be like this... My current vet isn't any more expensive than Lewis and they take MUCH better care of my dogs. read more
