I ended up getting a raclette baguette with prosciutto which is my go-to snack, perfect to munch on while browsing the different vendors. Food and drink are on the pricer side but that's how the Christmas markets generally go. The vendors were from all over the Northeast and there were actually more shops than I was expecting for a relatively smaller market. Overall it was fun and a good way to celebrate the Christmas season. We went after Christmas so there weren't as many people but I can see how it could get very busy right before the holidays.

The parking outside is spacious which is pretty awesome - it's in fact a lot better than the rink in Everett in those terms. And that is also the case for the locker rooms which are also pretty big. That aside, the ice was in pretty good condition and not as soft as in other rinks, mostly because of the fact that the rink itself is kept at a colder temperature. The lighting of the ice is decent but the benches are a bit too short in length. Some of us had to stand up during the game... All in all this is a pretty solid ice skating rink though. I'm playing there next week and look forward to it.

Tufts a no gotta their own rink on campus since they didn't have varsity hockey until a few years back. Good trivia (trivierrr) in case you're ever in town. It's small, not a lot of seats, but it's cozy. And you can see just fine, and they don't mind if you stand up right next to the boards so that's cool to get the close up especially when there's a big hit right in front of you. Plenty of locals in the stands (who knew there were so many Norwich hockey alums in the area?) and lotsa "Hey Laaahrrry, how's the wife?" type of talk. Always amusing to hear. Jack had never been to a hockey game so it was pretty fun for him. However, I think he had just as much fun playing the racecar video game in the lobby. Actually I did too!

Plus, indoors, a massive boon for when being outside for any amount of time is miserable, which beats Frog Pond. As it were, I spent the first half hour practically clinging to the thin ledge, just trying to stay upright, but still had so much fun. Some tips: 1. Get here early on weekends, right when it opens for public skating - 4pm. You get to be one of the first to get your skates; you can stake out a convenient spot to get on/off the ice; you can have more of an empty rink to play; AND you get dibs on the stacks of crates. 2. Speaking of, the crates are such a genius, low-cost way of helping people get the hang of balancing without having to edge around slowly. As with many things, the stability that comes with skating comes with some amount of speed, which you can't really achieve by pulling yourself along the ledge. 3. Watch out for when it gets crowded, as you have not-so-good skaters like moi, the people practicing spins and jumps in the center, and the speed demons swooshing around. Then you have some random citizen police (who are not the actual rink security keeping an eye on things) trying to convince you to let go of your stack of crates and to practice being out on the open, in the form of an older lady barking orders at me. It was super bizarre. Let me do my thing! 4. The surface got very chipped in a short amount of time, and it was murder on my ankles after a while. 5. Parking is very tricky in this part of the North End. SpotHero or the T are your friend. 6. Whoever was in charge of the playlist, I doff my hat to you. So many bangers, one after the other, to skate to.

The guy who's in charge is friendly, the arena is clean and the locker rooms are heated. Awkward enough the temperate inside the rink is way warmer than in any other indoor rink I've been to causing the ice quality to usually be on the shitty side but overall it's still a good time and very well maintained. As far as parking goes, there's a private lot in the front making things very easy, especially for us hockey players who have to drag a ton of heavy equipment in and out every time.

You're really only here for the location and that nebulous "romantic feel". The ice itself is atrocious, even though the rink (and I use that term lightly) does get a Zamboni out from time-to-time. But the ice is so uneven. You can see concrete in some spots, with how some of the ice is so thin. You'll encounter a lot of folks that cannot stay vertical on skates, it's just the reality. Don't be surprised when someone behind you suddenly grabs you in desperation to prevent themselves from falling. Plus it's super crowded here during peak times. There are so many other nearby spots of grab better and more affordable concessions, so don't fall for the ones here.
