The music is good but not too loud, which is a must for my kiddo. They do not have assists but the rail at the top of the boards isn't too high so he was able to hang on. Slow pokes do stay to the edge and learners right in the center. It's an odd shaped small rink which makes it easy to move between rails and center without passing a (frozen) sea of people . Definitely a good place for a nice casual skate. We will be going back.

You're really only here for the location and that nebulous "romantic feel". The ice itself is atrocious, even though the rink (and I use that term lightly) does get a Zamboni out from time-to-time. But the ice is so uneven. You can see concrete in some spots, with how some of the ice is so thin. You'll encounter a lot of folks that cannot stay vertical on skates, it's just the reality. Don't be surprised when someone behind you suddenly grabs you in desperation to prevent themselves from falling. Plus it's super crowded here during peak times. There are so many other nearby spots of grab better and more affordable concessions, so don't fall for the ones here.

Went to go get a locker and u have to pay for it when u enter and it just wasn't clear and I felt like I was cutting the long line by getting a locker. Stopped and grabbed a lil snack and my friend and I both got the 50/50 and fries were good but they had the best onion ring I've ever had! If I was any better at skating, I'd come here all the time - free admission, rentals only $5 (CASH…read moreONLY), a pretty view of the harbor, and an absolutely banging playlist, what's not to love? Plus, indoors, a massive boon for when being outside for any amount of time is miserable, which beats Frog Pond. As it were, I spent the first half hour practically clinging to the thin ledge, just trying to stay upright, but still had so much fun. Some tips: 1. Get here early on weekends, right when it opens for public skating - 4pm. You get to be one of the first to get your skates; you can stake out a convenient spot to get on/off the ice; you can have more of an empty rink to play; AND you get dibs on the stacks of crates. 2. Speaking of, the crates are such a genius, low-cost way of helping people get the hang of balancing without having to edge around slowly. As with many things, the stability that comes with skating comes with some amount of speed, which you can't really achieve by pulling yourself along the ledge. 3. Watch out for when it gets crowded, as you have not-so-good skaters like moi, the people practicing spins and jumps in the center, and the speed demons swooshing around. Then you have some random citizen police (who are not the actual rink security keeping an eye on things) trying to convince you to let go of your stack of crates and to practice being out on the open, in the form of an older lady barking orders at me. It was super bizarre. Let me do my thing! 4. The surface got very chipped in a short amount of time, and it was murder on my ankles after a while. 5. Parking is very tricky in this part of the North End. SpotHero or the T are your friend. 6. Whoever was in charge of the playlist, I doff my hat to you. So many bangers, one after the other, to skate to.

The Kelly rink is a WONDERFUL place and a treasured free resource for all people in our community…read more It's a place where (in particular) young people of color from the neighborhood can get exercise and play. One of my favorite things to see there is young children learning to skate by pushing milk carts around for balance. Every time I skate at the Kelly rink people are friendly, fun and full of life. The Mo-town and bubble gum soul music pumped through speakers is a bonus. The rental skates are pretty uncomfortable - but when have you ever rented comfortable ice skates? For comfort, as always, you have to invest in a pair of your own. And I'd like to make a correction to some earlier postings: first of all, there are no "horrid" neighborhoods in Jamaica Plain. The poor and blue collar half of JP that hasn't been driven out by gentrification (i.e. the part where I live) is in many ways the heartbeat of the community and deserves to be cherished by all - visitors and newcomers especially. For those who only feel comfortable on tree lined streets with three car garages I would be glad to recommend several wealthy towns in metro-west for you to visit. A "sh#*-show of humanity"? You're talking about a free community ice skating rink, full of children in a poorer part of town. Show the same respect you would expect at your hometown "Galleria" rink. Happy skating!

There are a lot of things I appreciate about the Kelly Rink: it's free (or a mere $2 to rent), it has a warming house, the ice is fairly well-groomed, it's usually populated by school kids until its early evening closing, it's really easy to find (just along the Orange Line behind the Stony Brook T), and that I can hear the jammin' 94.5 FM hip hop piping from the speakers both on the ice and floating off into the winter wind on my walk home. The rental skates used to be worn leather but they have since switched to plastic mold skates with ski boot bindings, so I'd recommend bringing your own pair. There are still a few weeks left in winter. If you're in JP, stop by for a spin.

I spend over two hours of my day there, every week and this rink is pretty good overall. Let's start with the facilities: my only complaint is that the locker rooms aren't all that warm and a bit small but they are clean and don't smell which is a big plus and unlike a lot of other rinks I've been to. The ice itself is pretty well maintained and doesn't suffer from too many bad spots. There's no bumps or softer spots either. The lighting is good and even and the boards are stiff and netted all around which keeps the pucks inside. The overall temperature inside is much lower than in most rinks making for a more solid sheet of ice. However it will also cause spectators to freeze to death... A tradeoff that I actually think is awesome because I'd rather skate on better ice than see my buddies watch me skate from the stands... All in all the place is pretty good, with easy parking, a clean, solid sheet of ice and decent facilities. What more could one really need? A vending machine maybe? They have three.

The Jack Kirrane ice rink is in a lovely setting…read moreas it's not only outdoors, but at the top of a hill surrounded by trees and then the rest of the Larz Anderson Park. It's a great visual experience on top of having nice ice. A plus is that aside the rink is a flat patch of rectangular ice for beginners to practice on. One thing I don't like about skating at the Reilly Rink in Cleveland Circle is that beginners flop all over the ice. You can sit at the side of Reilly and time it on your watch and not go more than five seconds without seeing someone fall on the ice and possibly cause a pile-up. Kirrane has a nice solution for it. Reilly is free and Kirrane does charge $8 for Brookline residents (as of early 2026, fees may change with inflation!!!) and $10 for non-residents. They also rent nice quality skates, both figure and hockey style, if you don't have your own. The absolute best is to come in December to early January for the afternoon public skate and watch the sun set and the sky change colors off to the west before they shut down at 4:30pm. If you're lucky there will also be some snow in the surrounding trees adding to the experience. The only negative experience I has was that the staff didn't confront some pain in the butt kids. Some kids around ages 10-12 went on the beginner ice and were skating really fast and then diving and sliding on the ice as far as they could and knocking into beginner skaters, including young children. Neither their parents nor the staff said a word to them. I was close to going hockey player and roughing some of them up to teach them a lesson. They really should crack down on this before someone really gets hurt.
