Plus, indoors, a massive boon for when being outside for any amount of time is miserable, which beats Frog Pond. As it were, I spent the first half hour practically clinging to the thin ledge, just trying to stay upright, but still had so much fun. Some tips: 1. Get here early on weekends, right when it opens for public skating - 4pm. You get to be one of the first to get your skates; you can stake out a convenient spot to get on/off the ice; you can have more of an empty rink to play; AND you get dibs on the stacks of crates. 2. Speaking of, the crates are such a genius, low-cost way of helping people get the hang of balancing without having to edge around slowly. As with many things, the stability that comes with skating comes with some amount of speed, which you can't really achieve by pulling yourself along the ledge. 3. Watch out for when it gets crowded, as you have not-so-good skaters like moi, the people practicing spins and jumps in the center, and the speed demons swooshing around. Then you have some random citizen police (who are not the actual rink security keeping an eye on things) trying to convince you to let go of your stack of crates and to practice being out on the open, in the form of an older lady barking orders at me. It was super bizarre. Let me do my thing! 4. The surface got very chipped in a short amount of time, and it was murder on my ankles after a while. 5. Parking is very tricky in this part of the North End. SpotHero or the T are your friend. 6. Whoever was in charge of the playlist, I doff my hat to you. So many bangers, one after the other, to skate to.

It's way better than pickup hockey in that…read moreit's hockey the way it was intended to be played with goalies, referees, linesmen, score keepers, scoreboard, whistles, faceoffs, organized teams at different levels open to new players as well as highly skilled players. They play a full season, ending with a championship. Good comradery, great work out, great community, well organized, playing different levels, different locations and on set nights. A number of season I've played in two of their division on different nights and sometimes different locations. A blast, but also a great work out.

They also offer beginner/instructional leagues, novice (intermediate) leagues and "Prime Time" (experienced) leagues. The Hockey Academy is generally a bit more expensive than other leagues around Boston. However their ice time is a bit more predictable. For example, I play in a league that is in Newton on either Wed or Thursday night at either 8, 9 or 10. That's pretty consistent compared to another league I play in where games are anywhere from Sunday to Thursday, between 8 and 11 pm and rotate between Newton, Arlington and Wilmington.

While we received a pro-rated refund, we received no explanations, no opportunity to find out about other classes we could take, and only a vague response that things would be up and running again by July 15th. It's now July 15th and we haven't heard anything. Unless you want to have your time wasted, don't bother with this disorganized, irresponsible program. It seems like there are serious managerial problems and a huge lack of responsibility. Don't bother - we won't again!

We went to a wedding at this lovely venue a couple of months ago. We had never been to an event…read morehere and were so pleasantly surprised about what a terrific place this is. It's a space with simple elegance and a rustic charm. This is a real boat club with members who join because they love sailing. The annual Head of the Charles and other regattas are big deals here. But it's good news that the space can be rented out for weddings and other events because it's really pretty cool. The bride and groom of the wedding we attended are both avid sailors and so this place has special meaning to them. I love that there is both indoor and outdoor space here so if you luck out and have good weather, your guests can go out to the expansive deck or down to the water's edge. We had a sunny, perfect late afternoon and so guests wandered freely in and out. You can hire whatever caterer and bar service that you would like which I think is a terrific option when hosting any kind of party. It's a great way to control the quality of the food and not be locked into anything you're not 100% sure of. I'm also told you can't charge for alcohol at this site and must have an open bar; to that I say: "Amen". I am not a believer in hosting guests at a wedding where there is a cash bar. You wouldn't charge people for drinks if you invited them to your home so it's never made sense to me to do it a wedding. So for events held here, it's not a debate: it's an open bar although of course you choose what to serve. There was plenty of room for both dining and dancing in two separate but totally adjacent inside areas. One side was the dining area and the other was for the cocktail hour and mingling, later for the live band and dancing. Although the Boat Club can be a bit tricky to find event though it's a Cambridge address, it is well worth considering if you're planning a wedding especially if you want a place that is unique.
