It's a cute little convenience store, but not what I expected. I really just stopped by to grab an ice cream on a cone. There were 2 ladies that were in there, and they were polite. My ice cream was a tad bit too sweet for my taste (it was a pineapple flavored), but it was good enough. They have a few other things on their food menu, but again, it's a little convenience store with little touristy knick knacks you might buy as souvenirs. Finding a touch of Japan in the Royal... Lawson Station in the lobby of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel was a nice surprise to see as it's not your ordinary convenience store...as the size itself is impressively larger and is filled with everything from snacks to beach gears. So neat and very organized that's what I saw as soon as I walk in are some beach gears as I assume many who plans to get that sun needs various accessories when they do provide for all ages, and what do you also need out there...snacks, lunch, drinks and all sorts of cravings and they do have it here! The abundance of mostly japanese/locally loved items of musubi, sushi, fruit sando and an isle filled with cup noodles they do have a hot water pot and microwave to heat your items which is convenient. On this hot afternoon I did noticed they have a freezer chest filled with individually wrapped Bubbies Mochi Ice Cream and Uncle's Ice Cream Sandwich it's nice to see the local flair here...besides they're awesome!!! With a great staff here and a bunch of Hawai'i souvenirs including some Japanese items as well this Lawson Station has a great inventory to take care of your needs and can see myself returning here to pick up a few items that I have yet to see elsewhere. Terrible experience from Travis! We ordered around 9:59pm for shaved ice and he was explaining the flavors with irritation. As tourist of course we are not familiar with most flavors and this was already off putting. When he gave us our shaved ice, Travis basically lectured my group that was should be grateful he even served us since he did not realize it was past 10pm when he was making the shaved ice but he said it with so much attitude and disdain. Naturally, I spoke up and preceded to let Travis know his attitude and sass is unwanted and inappropriate. If he's so unhappy with him serving us, he should not have taken our orders. If he would have told us when we were ordering "I'm sorry, it's 10pm, I am not able to take your order" my group would have been fine. The fact that he had to lecture us after he gave us our order like we knew we weren't able to order after a certain time was upsetting. If I can give him 0 stars for customer service I would and mind you we only ordered 1 shaved ice. Definitely an upsetting experience to our vacation and manager Grace talked to us to apologize and we appreciate the apology but at the end of the day the damage was done. Halfway between the US Mainland and Japan, it's a wonderful surprise to find Lawson in Hawaii! While not as glamorous as its true Japanese counterparts, just having it here needs to be celebrated. If you are coming from Japan, you may be a little underwhelmed by the lack of variety, pricing, and overall quality. If you are not though, you'll be extremely happy with what you are seeing. The BEST little convenience store around! We got penne pasta with tomato cream sauce. (Check the dates. All were good, but some had fresher dates.) They showed us how to heat up in microwave. Seriously BEST penne I've had ... maybe ever. 6 year old LOVeD it. They let me purchase a bowl of broth (normally what's added to the ramen you purchase) & we got a bowl of fruits. We ate on the balcony of our hotel. It was such a treat. (We came off a flight TIRED but hungry. It was dinner time & 6year old wanted pizza & fries, I wanted soup, husband wanted something light. (We needed something to make us feel human again before taking a quick dip in the pool & heading to bed.) We staggered in here and each got something that we loved. I love Lawson! I am at Lawson at least once a day while I am staying at Royal Hawaiian. What I buy: 1. Oden (clear soy based broth Japanese stew) - pretty authentic and delicious. You can choose ingredients and pay by the each pice you picked. My favorite is Daikon, Fishcake and Fried Tofu. Don't forget to ask for extra broth and Japanese mustard. 2. Spam Musubi 3. Omusubi 4. Super rude cashier. Waiting in line today at 3:15pm at the Sheraton Waikiki Lawsons. I was waiting patiently for checkout and the lady never came to my register as she was doing another task, the older lady with reddish dyed hair and blue glasses said, "next" so I moved to the open register and she seemed put-off. Strange as I was next in line but she didn't see me even though I was standing there just waiting? Then was acting strangely. Using my credit card I always ask if they honor the local discount or military appreciation and she barked back "NO MILITARY DISCOUNT, NO KAMAIIMA". Super unfriendly, then I had already checked out and I asked for a bag as I purchased a lot of goods for my family, she then said I needed to charge again for the bag. It was inconvenient, would have been better to asks to charge for a bag beforehand. I was tired of her non hospitality style and just carried all the items out (4 bottles of cold drinks, 4 musubi's and sandwich crammed in my arms and purse. Lawson Hawaii has some descent products like oden and onigiri, but overall its a shell of what Lawson Japan is. They simply don't have the same products, services, or experiences that Lawson Japan has. They are trying to be like ABC Store instead, but ABC has already established itself as THE convenient store in Waikiki, while Lawson is struggling and closing down its stores. Now there is only two stores left. There used to be four stores, with a broken and unfulfilled promise to the community to open 30 stores overall in Hawaii, which never happened. While this location is truly lacking the Lawson vibe I wish this Location had some of the signature products they have in Japan. I don't want to mark them down cause they do have good bentos for the USA but nothing like Japan. I miss Lawson's spicy fried chicken. However, the biggest upside to the store which alone will give this store 4 stars is the Oden. Gollee, this stuff is good and is usually the first thing I eat when I arrive in Japan, a must buy! It is located inside Sheraton Waikiki, so there is no secret that their main target customers are tourists, not locals. Others have mentioned all the cool aspects of this store, but the only thing I wanted to mention is about their carryout "Oden". It is a Japanese hot pot dish where you have a soy "dashi" based soup with a variety of meat and vegetables simmered inside. You might think such hot pot dish is not an ideal takeout food item, but it is. They have a disposable bowl where they put in some soup and items you want. Popular items are Daikon radish, boiled egg, atsu age tofu. I love Oden at convini in Japan. It is one of the cheapest way to enjoy protein and vegetable. Other cheap food options in Japan are often carb heavy. Oden at this Waikiki store is clearly different from the ones in Japan. Sourcing of their ingredients are different. For example, Atsu Age Tofu is much softer in Japan. Regardless, it is nice to have the ability to purchase cheap Oden while staying in Hawaii. I did the North Shore Adventure and Eric mentioned an amazing donuts to try. The malasada. I was overjoyed when I found this store because I remember them being described and they sounded amazing! The guy that worked here wasn't very cheery or welcoming, but I got him to smile. I ordered two of the donuts. They were heated up by the worker and handed to me. Really sugary and delicious! Convenience. Location. Selection. Service. Friendliness. Prices are outrageous. A 750ml bottle of Jim Beam (white label) Bourbon is $25 and at ABC, across the street from the Sheraton, it's $20. It can be found for $13 at other stores, such as Long's or Donkey. You should NOT go here except for TWO Items only if you're staying at the Sheraton or Royal Hawaiian : Onigiri (rice balls) and Beer. If you like American beer and/or want a "rice ball filled with goodies" then go here. Everything else is too expensive and limited in selection. Instant ramen, corn or potato chips, lunch bento's, etc. are too limited and over priced (Takai) I ordered the "Oden" and with that 2 Chikuwa and 1 Gobo all with soup base. The soup lacked any and all flavor to say that it was made with 1/2 package seasoning and too much water. This made the Chikuwa & Gobo flavorless. Sad. Easy to fix had someone tasted it prior to selling it. Had someone known what REAL Japanese Oden tastes like. I go to Japan (Tokyo) very often and personally know THIS is not good Oden. Bad: Quality of food. Preparation of cooked foods. Prices. And I'll say again: prices. The ABC Store across the street is less expensive and 2 minutes walking out of your way. Worth the walk to save $10-$20 per shopping event (Y900-Y1,800). On a positive note... two things : there is an African American man that works at the check-out who is so jovial, friendly, and just a man who makes my worst of moods cheer up and I feel great after speaking with him. He is a credit to the store. Secondly, this is the ONLY shop on Island, and among most restaurants as well that hand you a plastic wrapped hand wipe to clean-up before you eat your meal. I guess it's because there are so many Japanese tourists that come to Oahu and it makes them feel a little more at home? Lawsons is a pretty commonly seen convenience store in Tokyo. This Lawsons is located inside of the Sheraton hotel in Waikiki. It's open early and open late (not 24 hours unfortunately) and sells everything that you might need - souvenirs, water, drinks, snacks, sunscreen, and prepared food like spam musubi!!! They also have like bento box type things, which I didn't have time to try. But we did get a lot of spam musubi and spam + egg musubi that were hot to eat for a quick breakfast and they were good. Very convenient shop to pick up some things that you may have forgotten to pack or take care of that thirst and hunger in between meals. It's pretty much just like an ABC store. One of the largest convenience stores in Japan has arrived in Hawaii. Now I have never been to Japan but my friend Nate talks about his many visits to Lawson for a late snack meal. He describes one of his favorite meals, Fried Chicken from Lawson. Now when I found out that Lawson is opening in Hawaii, I had to go down there to try this chicken. So I decided on my lunch break to visit the grand opening at Sheraton Waikiki. Unfortunately upon my arrival, to my dismay no fried chicken. Major dissapointment! How do I describe Lawson Station (whats up with these Americanized names)......Its a convenience store with Japanese finesse. As mentioned I've never been to Japan, but everyone talks about how awesome the convenience store food is in Japan. How is it at Lawson? Unfortunately all I have to compare is 7-11 and ABC Store. Well I wasn't that hungry so I tried their tuna musibi ($2) and Chair Su Manapua ($1.20). It was good but nothing I will go crazy for. The bentos did look yummy but a bit pricey for display food. It included typical array of Japanese bentos. It ranged from $7 to $12 for a plastic container. Its hard for me to spend that much money in a convenience store when I can buy a hot plate of food elsewhere. Yes it lives up to the name of a convenience store, but however isn't ABC store like in every block of Waikiki. How does this compare to 7-11? If you need convenience go to 7-11, if you want to combine 7-11 with ABC feel with a Japanese twist head to Lawson. (Wait does this description help?) Well the good thing about Lawson is.....I get to be the first one to review it in Hawaii! The question is will I check in again. We had to wait an hour for a seat at a restaurant nearby so we decided to pay it a visit. Super busy with lots of tourists! Duh. I thought it had a good mix of things. I think I was expecting a little more Japanese candies and goodies but that wouldn't make any sense since Japanese visitors visit Hawaii for "Hawaiian" things. Stuff similar to Japan: Oden, Japanese mag (with those Japanese half naked models on the front), bentos to heat up, a mix of instant ramen/miso soup/etc. to have on the go, a little liquor area with my favorite cheap sakes and umeshus, pastries from Panya/St. Germaine, and a small tiny area of toiletry stuff from Japan. Not bad. Yes, the prices are a little high. Sooo. The prices in Waikiki are always higher and its no biggy and totally expected. I love me a little bit of Japan here. Although I mostly shopped at the ABC Store, I often needed icy cold bevages to make into tasty cocktails in my room. This Lawson Station is located inside the Hotel Lobby. Lawson is an odd kind of store, they sell expensive Hawaiian Souvineers, cheap imported beauty products and premade noodle dishes in cases. Some items are just odd finds and interesting to look at. The food in cases and under lights doesn't look that fresh, but there are swarms of people waiting for it. You can save a couple bucks on your spam musabi, but it doesn't look that great. So weigh your options. What they do score on is low cost beer, alcohol and mixers. I bought some Hawaiian Sun Drinks, Coconut Water and a Blue Hawaiian Mixer for my Rum. Three stars for the location.
