Vegans - proceed with caution. You can get a very tasty, filling meal here but you'll need a little coaching from staff as to what menu items can be Veganized (spoiler alert: basmati rice isn't one of them). Dinner date with my husband and I'm so glad we found Lazeez. We had assistance from our kind and patient waiter to veganize the appetizer crispy collards, pind de cholly and the okra dish. Since the rice is made with butter, he offered quinoa as an alternative base and that was a perfect pairing. The restaurant itself is upscale and simply romantic. Our server was a total sweetheart. Our food was some of the finest Indian cuisine we've ever had, masterfully displayed on unique black pottery dishes. Yes: vegan options

So..... i echo some of the prior review comments. Food great. -The two dishes we had, rogan josh lamb, and a chole chickpea dish were excellent. A definite cut above the journeyman Indian dishes at some (not all) of the Indian restaurants in town. Far from tinned sauces. Piquant, flavorful, tasted like ground spices. (Garlic naan, a disappointment, definitely skip it.) -The service, still, it seems, a work in progress, on the job training. No drink menu, and I actually thought they didn't have a liquor license until, as the dishes were arriving, I turned left and saw there was a giant stocked bar (!). I called out from the middle of the room to the bartender and asked what kind of beer they had and they were frankly a bit unprepared to answer, so I just threw some names out to them. I hope they get that aspect settled because it's a prime location in the middle of the Mall, clearly capable chefs who understand proper Indian cooking and they're seeking to deliver a higher caliber of delicious cuisine. But they need to quickly get the wait staff into anticipated pro shape.... It should not stop you from going there because, after all, you had it for the taste and it was *very good* .

This is a fabulous new Indian Restaurant in Charlottesville. I highly recommend! The service was above par, the food was absolutely delicious, and I love the modern decor and atmosphere. I hope everyone visiting or living in CVille will experience it! It's as good or better than the best Indian restaurants I've been to in San Francisco and DC.

Great Flavors! The vegetable masala and the Chicken Vindaloo were both some of the best we have ever had. Very pleased!

I have very high expectations for Indian food so I rarely go out for Indian, but I would come back here anytime because the food tastes authentic! When I came here with my family we ordered some staples - Lazeez Papdi Chat, Samosa Veg, Lacha Pyaz Tadka Dal, and Butter Chicken. Everything was absolutely delicious, presented well, and exactly how I wanted it and expected it to taste. I did try something new which was the Makhanphal Tikka Masala, which I expected to be different in my head, but still tasted delicious. I also ordered a Mango Lassi which was just perfect in both presentation and taste. My only gripe and the reason I took a star away is the service. Unless we intentionally bothered a server for attention, we would easily go a long time feeling ignored. That being said, I would still come back here again because the food is worth it!

We really enjoyed the appetizer Lazeez Papdi Chaat (chickpea). Delicious and great texture. For a main the chicken tikka masala and Khumani Kofta (apricot) exploded with flavor. More sauce than we needed but very tasty and great for naan and rice. Service and ambiance were good.

Wow!! YUM!! 3 of us just had the most delicious meal here We enjoyed the biryanis with lamb, butter chicken, garlic naan, and veggie samosas and that was spot! We potentially could have ordered more but errored on the side of less is more and it was Amazing! Delicious! We could not be more pleased that there is a real Indian restaurant in town

Went here for dinner one night and the food was amazing. The staff were very friendly and very welcoming. I definitely will be visiting again!

We had the absolute best experience. The food was top notch I'm pretty sure we tried almost everything on the menu and there was nothing that wasn't good . Our waiter and bartender Viki was incredible. 10/10 would recommend to anyone willing to explore different food options in the Cville area .

There is such a wonderful blend of spices in their dishes. The lunch menu entrees run $15 and up. They come with your choice of entree, soup or salad, naan, rice and the side of the day. The side on this day was peas in a curry/cumin type sauce. I expected I would just try the peas and move on but they were delicious, and I ended up eating the whole thing. The lentil soup is blended so there are not actual lentils pieces. It had a bit of a kick and very good flavor. I ordered the Sabjiwaia with chicken and medium spice. I could easily move the heat up a notch as the medium was very tolerable. It was very good as well as the rice and naan. Some of my fellow diners ordered the Chicken Tikka Platter which I would try the next time. The chicken is whole pieces, and it's not smothered in a heavy sauce. The sauteed vegetables were also separate. The service was on point so no complaints there. I would definitely return!

It was pretty good, it had a slightly spiced flavor to it but I wasn't sure what the spice was. We ordered the chili milli gobhi, samosa, butter chicken, and garlic naan. I liked the chili milli gobhi a lot. I wasn't expecting it to be fried, but I enjoyed it, and it was covered in some sort of chili sauce. The samosa was pretty good, I liked the sauces it came with. The butter chicken was just fine, I feel like I have had better, but it was very saucy which I liked. The naan was pretty good. I liked our server, she was nice and seemed to know the menu. The restaurant was nice inside and had a good ambiance.

My husband and I close this restaurant to break my fast. We were greeted quickly by the hostess who led us to booth seating, and gave us menus. There was no need though, as we had already spotted the all-you-can-eat buffet. We requested only water to go with our meals; she quickly brought a carafe of chilled water and two glasses. This is a generous buffet with many selections for a complete meal, from soup and salad to dessert. There was a good variety of both meat and vegetarian options. Our FAVORITES included the fresh mixed chickpea salad (the chick peas, cucumbers, tomato, onion, parsley); lamb curry (which featured tender boneless and tender meat); rice pilau with raisins and carrots; borani badenjan (eggplant curry. Tip: drizzle yogurt on this);; bamia (okra) curry; firnee milk pudding (dessert); and the addictive dooth pati chai (spiced milk tea). There were also some items that we didn't enjoy as much but were still good. For instance, the chicken kofta meatballs, while nicely spiced, were very dry. And, the nan bread was disappointing. (There were also many additional good choices on the buffet that are not listed here). The ambiance in the restaurant is comfortable, with many paintings and decorations from Afghanistan. Some tables are in a side room, ideal for small groups or privacy. We noticed, but didn't visit, a downstairs shop with Afghan carpets and other goods. Plus, there's a shop on the side that sells groceries. Parking is plentiful and free. The lunch buffet was $17.99 each, plus VA sales tax (6.3%), city meals tax (5.3%), credit card service free (3.5%), and tip (variable). There are cheaper options available if you order from the menu. We would return when next in Charlottesville.

I stopped in on the later side as Charlottesville's restaurant scene has a lot of early closings. Seeking a vegetarian combo, I ended up with a salad and a mix of potatoes, okra, and chickpeas, which were clearly cooked earlier and served cafeteria style. The dishes are vaguely reminiscent of Indian stylings but are not spicy. Perhaps this is why this place oversalts food (I've seen this with other Afghan places as well); I hate having to drink so much water afterwards. An herbal tea was an interesting flavor, and I got a decent amount of food for the money. Given the limited options for vegetarian food on a Friday night, I was satisfied, but the food could have been better.
