We enjoyed the food and service so much that we decided to host a get-together for almost 50 people in their private backroom this past weekend. Everyone enjoyed the food and the room is a great space to hold a private party - lots of natural light and easy access from the parking lot behind the restaurant. The owners were helpful during the planning. They made suggestions for the style of food we wanted and during the event were very attentive, making sure all needs were met. I love Indian food, but I have a confession to make: I had never had chicken tikka masala before my visit to Royal India Palace. I can now say it is delicious, and the masala spices have a unique and tasty flavor. I did ask for spicy and it wasn't as spicy as I'd like. We started with some garlic naan and a chili paneer appetizer. The chili paneer was awesome, and it is something I will be ordering in the future. I was with my mom and she ordered lamb korma, which is more of a curry type dish. As I love anything curry, I was impressed by this dish as well. The ambience was meh, as the restaurant was in a building that used to be a warehouse. The service was good, and our server was kinda quirky--but she was very good at her job. My son goes to school in Lexington, Virginia and there is no Indian restaurant there. Royal India palace is located in Waynesboro, only 40 mins from Lexington! We were so relieved to find this and were even more impressed that the food here tastes really good! We tried their Malai tikka, chicken tikka masala, paneer butter masala, chicken biryani, samosa, everything was absolutely delicious! How fortunate am I to have flavorful Indian and Nepali cuisine served in a romantic setting, with attentive and helpful service. I like to begin a meal here with the onion Kulcha. I enjoyed a soft, warm, succulent bread, similar to naan, that is stuffed with tender and lightly seasoned onions (I could make a meal of this kulcha). My main dish was the Chicken Jhol Momo, which is a fine Nepalese entree. The momo are like dumplings and are cooked with a flavorful tomato and sesame soup. My husband and I love Indian food and this place is pretty good. We ordered takeout while staying in an airbnb here in Waynesboro. The staff was friendly and our food came out very quickly. When you order your food, they ask you what spice level you want (mild, medium, hot, extra hot, Indian hot). I chose medium for my paneer tikka masala and my husband chose hot for his chicken vindaloo. The spice levels are definitely not normal for Indian food. Neither of our dishes had much spice. It would be great for anyone that doesn't like heat, but if you do make sure to get the hottest option. The food was good, but not the best Indian food I've ever had. However, this is probably the best option around. The restaurant itself is very nice and would be perfect for a romantic dinner. We would probably return if we come back this way again! read more

Our group arrived around 12:30 on a Thursday afternoon in January. There is street parking in front of the restaurant but there is also a parking lot behind the building. It wasn't busy, and we were seated right away. The interior is large and spacious with high ceilings. They offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Our server was friendly and helpful with the menu options. There is a special lunch menu, but you can also order from the main menu. The specials include an entree, cucumber/tomato salad, rice and choice of an appetizer. It all comes out together on one large platter. Once we ordered, it took a while to get our food, but we had a large group. The portions are generous, and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. I had the Butter Chicken with medium spice, and it was the right heat for me. The small cucumber salad came with a light vinaigrette that was very good. For my appetizer, I ordered the samosa which I didn't care for. It was a little greasy and mushy inside which just didn't appeal to me. The naan was delicious! The menu items are a bit on the pricey side but that seems to be the way of the world these days. We would return! read more

I have visited Royal India Palace several times, and Chef Pashupati continues to amaze me! The traditional Indian and Nepalese dishes are excellent. The Madras Chicken and Lababdar Chicken are incredible, but this time Chef brought out his new dish, Chili Fish! This is his own Indo-Chinese fusion dish, fried fish tenders with a sweet-hot chili glaze. The fish is perfectly cooked and melts in your mouth while the chili adds just a touch of heat. Chef's creativity is the highlight of any visit to Waynesboro. For an appetizer, try the Chicken Malai Tikka, chunks of spiced chicken breast served with peppers and onions on a sizzling skillet. I would give this place 6 stars if I could, and that's after over a one hour wait to get our food (they were understaffed last night). Truly worth the wait. The ambiance is phenomenal, clean and cozy with elevated decor that surprised me for this area. The food is unrivaled. Having the majority of my closest friends being from across India, I had high expectations and wasn't disappointed. The Nepali dumplings are by far the best, get them with the chili sauce. Their five star Indian hot level is about a medium compared to what we're used to but that tracks for Waynesboro. I can't believe we have a restaurant with this quality of food in this area, by far the best locally owned option for any of us here with food quality to rival a big city. Hopefully their success will drive more quality options to the area, though I doubt they will beat Royal India Palace. read more

I don't live in Waynesboro, but I was there several nights over the course of the last week. I stopped at Royal Indian my first night there ended up coming back for two more visits -- the third time, my kids and husband were with me. They are open later than most restaurants, which helped me out since I had an obligation until 8pm. Most restaurants were closed by that point. The service was consistently excellent, the owner came to the table each time to check on us (especially when he was concerned we would find some of the dishes too spicy! He wanted to make sure we were ok -- very sweet). I love palak paneer, and this restaurant has my *absolute favorite version of palak paneer* across central Virginia. Also excellent, the goat curry (mild for my daughter, "Indian hot" for my husband -- both got rave reviews). Our server recommended the chicken lababdar and the methi chicken -- they were both excellent -- very similar, but definitely not the same. My son liked the Indo-Chinese dumplings and the vegetable pakora a lot; the sesame naan was delicious and the jalapeno pakora were great if you like spicy things! The first night I was there, I ordered the vegetable thali and it was wonderful. I am attaching a photo here. One thing that looked GREAT but I wasn't going to be drinking alcohol before driving 45 minutes home to Charlottesville were the COCKTAILS! Very creative and looked delicious. I think next time I go, I will order the paneer lababdar, the palak paneer, and some kind of naan. The mango lassis (my kids let me have a few sips!) were also absolutely delicious. This was an unexpected hidden Gem at the end of the Skyline drive through Shenandoah. The food was simply spectacular. It's a mix of different Indian regions, including Hakka cuisine. The Johl Momo's (dumplings) alone are worth the visit. If you're driving through nearby, you should stop and eat. Heck even taking a detour just to eat there is worth it. We went on what was advertised to be their grand opening. When we arrived we were told they had a lot of to go orders and it would be a bit of a wait. Although there were empty tables we waited about 20 minutes. This rubbed me the wrong way. However once we were seated we waited again and had to ask for water. Our waitress was pleasant but seemed stressed. She took our drink orders and my husband ordered an Indian beer. I got a turmeric cocktail and said I prefer drinks that are not too sweet and to ask the bartender not to put much honey in it. She said that she was also the bartender. The drink was very good and unusual. I warned her that we would have difficulty ordering as we are not super familiar with Indian food. We both opted for the combination plates to give us the opportunity to taste multiple dishes. My husband ordered the non veg with two meats and a veg, bread, rice and what we thought was raita. Our waitress forgot to ask what veg he wanted and had to be brought back to the table. I got the all veg plate with three vegetarian dishes. My husband ordered medium heat and I ordered mild. Next time I'll order medium. When I tasted the raita it was sweet and I realized it was our frozen dessert. I set it aside but after sitting on a plate with hot food and waiting until we finished our dinners, it was quite melted. We asked for raita but by the time it was brought to the table, we had finished our dinners and I sent it back. The decor has not been changed since it was the Heritage, which ironically we ate at after the Chili Blues and Brews festival on their last night. The food was very good. Our waitress apologized but we said we understood. They were overwhelmed but they were all working very hard. The hostess was bussing tables as well as waiting tables , but somehow they still managed to keep a calm pleasant atmosphere. We will return in a month or two to see if they have their act together. We went to the "Grand Opening" which isn't the best time, but we love Indian cooking, so were curious. First time I ever ate Biryani with mushrooms, but India is a large country, so maybe just a local variant. We thought we would give it another chance after they have settled in. So, we returned to check it out. First, it is not strictly Indian, but more like a fusion restaurant, so the number of authentic Indian dishes is limited, and the menu is confusing and oddly categorized. The Biryani was better this time, without mushrooms, but I would rather see more traditional dishes, instead of the current mixed menu. Service seems a little understaffed, and not really knowledgeable about the food. Ambiance is okay, unless you sit at the wrong table and have to see the Sports Bar section, with TV monitors aglow. I went in with friends last night for dinner. The dinner was disappointing. It was expensive for what we received. The portion sizes were small. Running out of rice for the meal was very unexpected. The parokas were not just what I ordered but had other unexpected and unwanted pieces of potato and cauliflower. There were only a few actual perokas. The service was slow and not attentive. Food took forever and nothing was cleared from the table when the dishes were finished. The only reason I did not just give them one star is the taste of the food. I will say that the food i did receive was very tasty, there just was not enough of it. I will not be returning. Hopefully the other new Indian restaurant opening soon will be better. read more
