The hype is real! This place is beyond yummy! So first off, you order before you sit down. I ordered the berries and cream waffle - by far the best fluffiest waffle I have ever had. It must be the batter. It must be the berries. I can't seem to pinpoint what it is, but it's worth the try. I ended up only eating half and saving the rest for later. The blueberry pancake was huge with juicy blueberries. I also ordered the works with a sausage patty and sourdough toast. No complaints whatsoever. The decor inside is lovely and vintage. I love the hallway stairs that go up to their second floor right when you walk in because of the beautiful gold hanging mirrors. I have been going to Lazy Jane's since sometime in the early 2000's. When I am in Madison I go there for brunch every weekend and I have at times gone both days! It can be very busy on weekends but I have been happy to wait. It's an old 2 story house with part of the ceiling/Floor removed to open up the interior. A mix of table sizes scattered around both floors and a few tables outside including a small greenhouse which I like. Good food, veggie/vegan options. You order from the line that starts inside the front door, take a buzzer and find a seat. Sometimes when you hit a peak busy time you will have to wait for a seat. Usually by the time your buzzer goes off a table will open up. It is my favorite brunch spot and I look forward to going every week! read more

Lazy Janes has the best scones! They taste as amazing as they look (I mean have you ever seen such beautiful scones??), almost like a fruity shortbread cookie with glaze on top. Super good, can make the worst day the best day! There's really no point in going anywhere else for scones, you'd just be disappointed. The food here is also really good-- for example the vegetarian biscuits and gravy! It's not pictured because I was so hungry and it was so good I forgot to take a picture. Imagine my surprise when I looked up Lazy Jane's and it only had 4 stars. This is a five star breakfast place all the way. It's a converted house which is funky in all the best ways with totally unmatched furniture, quirky art on the walls, games and books strewn about. Lots of 2-4 people tables and one to two larger. Couch area on second floor with toys and such is clutch for people with little kids who just want to drink a cup of warm coffee while the little ones play . The menu is pancakes, scrambles, eggs, French toast. Try the specials - they are always great. They have an amazing amount of scones - lemon is our favorite. They have vegan scones too! Finally got to this place after having it on my list of restaurants to visit for years! I understand why it's always packed on weekends. We were here on a Sunday for a brunch and the place was busy, but we managed to find a table upstairs and the cashiers kept the line moving efficiently. Also super friendly staff! My friend and I both got coffee and scones to start as we knew there was going to be a wait for the main food. The scones were quite good. I got the cherry and he got the buttermilk almond. They live up to their reputation! I will say I'm not a big fan of a glaze on my scones, but theirs provided a nice lemony taste. As for the main food I ordered the veggie frittata, and it was exactly what I was hoping for! Loaded with veggies that maintained some of their crispness and not overly salty. Also the toast wasn't overly buttered. My friend wasn't as big of a fan of what he ordered, but he admits he probably just ordered wrong. He got the chorizo scrambler and he said it came across as a little bitter because of the swiss cheese. Next time he'll just have to try something else. Stopped in for a late lunch after running errands on Willy Street. The weekday lunch crowd had disappeared as had some of the lunch options. Order at the counter then find a table. I suppose when busy that could be a challenge given the tight quarters. I ordered the sausage special which was pretty good but it didn't totally grab me and I don't recall what my dining mate ordered but I know she liked it. By far my favorite place for breakfast and brunch in Madison. Nothing compares to Lazy Jane's in terms of price, quality or atmosphere. Atmosphere - old 2 story house turned into a restaurant. Seating on the 1st and 2nd floor. Old mix of tables, chairs and couches to sit on. Menu is on the wall, you order at the counter, and when your food is ready the kitchen hollers out your name and you pick up your own food at the window. Staff - friendly hipster staff that always has a good suggestion on food. I have yet to be steered wrong. Coffee - free refills at counter. Just walk up and they will take care of you. Food - i have yet to have anything bad here. They have good vegetarian and vegan options as well. My all time favorite dish there is the Biscuits and Gravy. Its probably the best biscuits and gravy north of the Mason Dixon line. What makes ti so good? It's those "holy cow" biscuits. Desserts - Get a half dozen scones to go. Try one of each flavor. They are out of this world. They are made fresh daily and are probably the best scones i have ever had. Thank god the lazy undergrads refuse to come here for brunch. They are content with walking to Mickey's Dairy bar and we should all be happy about it, because if they ever discover this place en mass, the line will quadruple. read more

October 3 my sons birthday. Don't go out to breakfast much but we decided to go and our favorite place on the east side of Madison was closed on Tuesdays. So trying to figure out where to go we said let's try lazy Jane's again, it's been a while. Bad idea. It's nice to come here early and maybe get some baked goods but the order food it's not worth it. The young cook and the guy at the register have kind of a happy go lucky attitude and I asked wow how is the corn beef hash? And he said it's really great. Everybody likes it. And I said oh OK well that's what I'm gonna have. the chef actually asked please come back and let me know how you like it because everybody always wants canned and this is fresh. I couldn't really believe that but what the heck OK. OK number one it's not corn beef hash what it is. It's cut squares of corn beef and then fried with small squares of potatoes. Like home fried potatoes. And that would be OK except they were greasy. I don't know what they cook it in but it leaves a weird taste in your mouth you order toast and they have tons of butter and things to go on it but they douse that with some sort of an oily butter. I don't know what they cook the eggs in but those were also oily so the guy just likes to Port oil and it's all salty so when you're finished eating can you go home your mouth is how do you spell chef like the inside your mouth is chafed by the salt. So I went back to let the guy at the register and the young cook know what I thought because he asked me to. They didn't like what I said so all they did was throw up a defense and say well. No one else has complained about that and yeah it says corn beef hash and it isn't but no one complains about it. I couldn't even go on about the rest of the breakfast because it was just so bad and it's not cheap. Lazy jeans years ago seem to be a pretty good place to go eat but not the same. So I thought I'd leave this review and hopefully save somebody else from a RAW mouth and an unhappy experience. If they would've just wanted to listen for a little bit, they could've found out that they don't have to butter their toast with whatever that is because they have plenty of fresh butter right there at your fingertips. And they don't have to put any salt on any of the food because you have salt and pepper right on the table. Excellent scones, cinnamon rolls, and ginger molasses cookies that are so scrumptious I get extras to take home. I chose one of the specials. It was scrambled eggs with smoked sausage, blue cheese and red onion. It came with crispy hash browns and toast, I had the fresh baked wheat-berry bread. All of which was fabulous. The decor makes me feel like I'm at my grandmas house, using the mismatched dishes and silverware from over the years. The artwork is a hodgepodge of everything from needlepoint to paint by numbers. Needed to try a new place for breakfast on a day off of work, and was very happy with my choice. Ordered at the counter and waited an appropriate amount of time for them to call my name. Picked up some silverware and a napkin and headed to my table. I was a little disappointed there wasn't any jelly for my toast, but I noticed later, after I'd finished my toast, there was a jar at another table and they just hadn't returned it to the community condiment table. Ordered the spicy pork omelette, which was hot and delicious and came with a perfect sized portion of potatoes and two slices of buttered toast. I can't imagine I haven't written a review for this place. This was the among the first places I fell in love with after moving from NYC. It's these types of typical local small business I loved in NEw York. When ever we visited, the food has been consistently good. To my surprise, they have started accepting credit cards as well which is great. We started with a coffee and morning bun and a blueberry scone. Which were amazing. I must say- if u don't start with their treats, u are missing something. I ordered cheesy grits, pig in a blanket, my friends ordered frittata, steak and hash with toast. I loved my cheesy grits. Oh.. they were so good. Everyone loved what they were eating. I could tell because their plates were wiped out clean at the end. The line was long and we had to wait a bit but it was so worth it. I gave 4 stars because of coffee. It's a breakfast place and I was expecting the coffee to be better. It didn't have body and I was hoping for more flavor. WOW. I can't believe it took me so long to try out Lazy Jane's - this place is truly a gem! With it's lime green exterior, it certainly catches your eye on Willy Street but the fact that it's built just like a house makes it easy to walk by without considering it as a restaurant. It is a casual restaurant with a relaxed, welcoming ambiance and self-serve style service. This was my second time trying to go there - be wary of their hours, as they close at 2PM! If you love scones, this is 100% the place to go. I've never seen any bakery in Madison that has so many kinds of scones - in fact, it's almost a little overwhelming because you'll want to order all of them and have to enact some self-restraint (THE BEST KIND OF SELF-RESTRAINT). - Pro tip: Go with multiple friends, order multiple scones, share them! :) They are also quite large and scones are dense in general so you can save some extra room for food! I ordered the lemon cream scone (YUM), italian sausage omelette, and a coffee. - Scone: Incredible. Perfect ratio of scone to icing, the right amount of crumble in a scone, and a lovely level of sweetness. 10/10 - Italian Sausage Scramble: Comes with your choice of toast (would HIGHLY recommend wheatberry, it's a much thicker cut than regular bread and they already put butter on it for you so you don't need to feel guilty about slathering it on later), breakfast potatoes, and the scramble. This is a good amount of food overall. The scramble was one of the best I've had in Madison as well - the eggs were light, and the food didn't feel heavy or greasy like a lot of American breakfasts do. Super low key (choose your own seat, get your own silverware, pick up your meal, bus your own table... you get the idea), delicious food, bottomless iced tea.. YAY. I enjoy ordering off their specials board because I get the most awesome things there! They had a spinach omelette with pesto and it was unreal, some other scramble type options that have been just great. I love their on-the-menu chorizo scramble too, so it's not just the specials! There is nothing lazy about Lazy Jane's in regards to the food and service. Lazy Jane's has quality food and an ambience to match. I ordered the seitan hash and roasted tomato and pesto croissant. Both items were exceptional. The hash was seasoned well and was cooked perfectly. The seitan was not dried out and had a nice chew, which was great because sometimes if done wrong it's like rubber. At Lazy Jane's, it was made perfectly. The roasted tomato pesto croissant though, was the star of the show. Nothing against the hash it was great, but the croissant was one like I've not experienced before. It was buttery, flaky, light, and just amazingly well put together. The croissant alone was fantastic, but add the roasted tomato pesto filling, and you're in a whole different class. I've not had a croissant with filling before, but I will be seeking them out after this experience. The filling enhanced the croissant because it brought more balance to the croissant. The rich butteriness of the dough was evened out by the sweet tart tomato pesto filling, and I wish I had bought more (but couldn't I got the last one, so be there early). The croissant is a must try. The food was exceptional, but I would be doing you a disservice if I did not speak about the ambience of Lazy Jane's. It's a home, and I mean that. Lazy Jane is a home converted in a restaurant, but it did not lose it's "homey" feel. While Lazy Janes is most known for their breakfast and scones, I am more of a lunch kind of person. I tend to get the soup and sandwich combo. Their tomato basil soup is so good. Very rich with nice chunks of tomatoes. I haven't had a sandwich of theirs I didn't like. Imagine a breakfast place where you stand in line to place your order, you then proceed to stand around like a vulture trying to find a table to open up (It's can be competitive). You then sit down to babies crying, people STOMPing up and down the stairs, people squeezing past your table to claim their table, people re-squeezing past your table to retrieve their food downstairs (more STOMPing), people re-squeezing past your table to bring their food back, then again to get the condiments they forgot. You get the point? This place is a commotion. Kind reminds me of Ian's Pizza at bar time...except it's Sunday morning and you're trying to enjoy breakfast. Occasionally they have to holler out people's names that didn't come to claim their food. It's loud. The above may be a bit harsh, but it's the truth, and not an extreme example. That said, LJ's could have a nice appeal to it when it's not the weekend. I imagine they could have a nice relaxing place when there aren't 100 people in there. My food was nothing special. Sitting out in the sun at an umbrella table next to an urban garden could not have been a more pristine Madison image. Scrolling the menu, I was hunting for something I had never heard of and found exactly just that- a Seitan Melt. Without throwing any words into a search engine to define seitan, I sank my teeth into sauteed portobellos, peppers, onions, and seitan, which left me in awe of how comparable this wheat-based meat alternative it was to a traditional sausage. My fellow diners split a Belgian waffle with fresh berries and cream, and I may have taken a couple forkfuls when offered. My intents were not to pedestal this restaurant as completely life-changing, but the interior of their plaid pancake was so spongy and sweet with a crisp shell to hug it all in; the cream tasted as if they had a cow upstairs ready to milk at all times.
