Trio- eggs over medium, salad greens, and sweet potato oatmeal pancakes
    Jaime R.

Great spot for a delicious breakfast in downtown Madison. Came here on a Saturday in the late morning/early afternoon and had to wait for just a bit for a table to open. We ordered at the counter and grabbed a seat. I went with the trio and chose eggs, salad greens, and upgraded to the sweet potato oatmeal pancakes which was a great decision! The pancakes were so delicious and tasted like fall! They were nicely spiced but not overly sweet. Loved the whipped cream that came with the pancakes as well. The short stack was huge! Overall, we loved our meal and the lovely atmosphere. Would absolutely return!

Delicious breakfast with a very casual atmosphere. Their potatoes are the perfect amount of crispy and portion sizes are pretty big. Upset to hear they will be closing in a few days.

Short Stack Eatery is a great little restaurant in the heart of Madison. I went with one other person around 11 a.m. on Friday and it was abuzz with activity. Luckily, we didn't have to wait for a table. However, there are many times when I've walked by Short Stack and seen a line out the door and down the sidewalk. Quite frankly, this is not a spot worth waiting for. Don't get me wrong, the food was delicious. Everything was hot and tasty. The bacon was thick-cut and savory. The scrambled eggs were...scrambled eggs (pretty hard to mess up). But the blueberry pancakes were the star of the show. They were fluffy and I thought I could taste a bit of corn meal in there -- a nice touch! The blueberries were fresh and plentiful. Now if you're wondering why I didn't give Short Stack Eatery more than three stars, I get it. The food was great. But the price is unbelievably high. I don't plan on returning because I can't justify spending nearly $20 on eggs, bacon, and pancakes. I only drank water because I didn't feel like tacking on a few more bucks. The person I went with ordered the same thing, and after tip we were at almost $50 for our bill. There are plenty of other great diners in the area that'll offer you similar quality food for half the price (and no wait time either).

I took out lunch from here. Sweet potato oatmeal pancake was my item. I went for full size. And that was enough for 2 people. Pancake was good with excellent flavor.

Stopped in while visiting Madison. They are known for the pancakes but I went in for the Cajun biscuits and gravy. It's all made from scratch and it shows. They also use farm fresh eggs. My daughter had the choc chip pancakes The only downfall is that they don't have an espresso maker so only drip coffee.

This place was great. In Madison for the weekend and wanted to find a good breakfast spot. Was recommended short stack as the place to go. I really like the way the restaurant is set up, I feel like it provides a very efficient eating experience. Different than traditional wait service, you order your food in front and have access to self serve coffee (that you pay for), free water, and free condiments. When your food is ready, they will bring it out to your table. This solves a problem I have experienced a lot at restaurants where I feel like you are sitting with an empty glass of water/cup of coffee for a long period of time. Food here was excellent, I ordered a "trio" of 3 things (essentially a breakfast combo). I got chocolate chip pancakes, bacon and house potatoes. Pancakes tasted of a much higher quality than I am used to, seemed scratch made vs from a powdered mix. Bacon was cooked perfectly and the potatoes were seasoned and crisped to a level I did not think possible. I did not even get a chance to take a picture of the food because it was so good!

Wonderful place to stop for breakfast right on state street. This place is usually pretty packed but they have a nice patio and service is usually very quick. They have some really tasty vegan and gluten free pancakes and their eggs Benedict is one of my favorites in Madison.

I the focus on locally sourced ingredients including absolutely delicious blueberry pancakes with real Wisconsin maple syrup. Yummy ! The coffee was a step above normal breakfast restaurants coffee and locally roasted (try the driftless). Usually when UW is in session there is a line so we were lucky on Saturday after the farmers market to get in and a place to sit. It is a bit eclectic as my coffee mug said Madison Sewer District This would be a great place to go before UW football games as they serve bloody Mary's and beer too. Highly recommend if you can get in without a wait

Food: 5 The blind special was really good--nice that they don't skimp out on their bargains :-) Service: 5 Very kind staff. My friend's eggs were scrambled instead of overeasy (as she had ordered them), and they switched them without any fuss! Ambiance: Very eclectic environment with interesting decorations. The lighting is fun to look at, and I'm glad they're outwardly supportive of minorities and certain nonprofits :-)

We arrived about 8:15 on a Thursday morning. There was no line and we were greeted promptly. The have an extensive menu with something everyone would like. I ordered the blueberry pancakes and had a cup of coffee. The coffee is self serve using the vacuum pumper system. The wait for our food was insignificant and the wait staff very pleasant. The blueberries were fresh and had that wonderful pop to them. Very tasty, great experience.

Madison seems to love this place. There was a line 5 minutes after it opened when we went. The next two days we walked by and there was a line 15 deep both times. They are doing something right. I'm not from Wisconsin so I just must not understand. Don't get me wrong. It was perfectly fine. That's it, it was fine. Not mind blowing by any means for a breakfast. The Bar. We sat at the bar and the service was great. They have a full bar and you can order booze as soon as they open. Including pours of whiskey is you so desire. I love bloody Mary's but I hated theirs. It's just a weird beety thing. To be fair they give a warning and offer a sample before you order but beware. The food. It was a bit pricey. The portions were average and so was the food. We went there because it opens early. If you are looking for a place to grab an early breakfast and a drink this is your jam. If you're looking for a place to blow your mind this ain't that.

Food was delicious!! Best eggs I've had in awhile!! Everything was cooked perfectly. Milkshake was tasty too! They did have a lot of rules, stand here, wait outside if there are 2 people inside. I guess they get busy and it's first come first serve on tables, but besides that it was cute!

The biscuits and gravy-- not particularly spicy but with amazing flavor. My guy couldn't even wait for the pic to dig in!

Definitely my new favorite brunch place in Madison! This place is legit. The decor is eclectic and the seating diverse-- we ended up at a very long table by the kitchen so we could watch. All the previous reviews raved about the sweet potato oatmeal pancakes so I could not resist, although I am SO intrigued about their menu item "the blind." Essentially it's a rotating special of the day and it's a surprise as to what it is. If you are brave you can order it for $7, but the only info you get about it is if it is sweet or savory that day. If you cannot stand the surprise you can ask what it is but then it's $11. In looking at past photos the blinds seem to always look delicious but I wanted sweet AND savory today. I got the trio, where you can choose three from the below: salad, fresh fruit, a short stack of pancakes (small charge to upgrade to sweet potato or fruit), two eggs your way, or breakfast meat. I opted for scrambeled eggs, fruit, and upgraded to sweet potato oatmeal pancakes. Guys, I did not regret it. The eggs were perfect and seasoned well with visible pepper, the fruit was a nice mix of melon, pineapple, and berries, and those pancakes...YUM!!! Served with a spiced cream and strawberries, they were divine--no syrup needed. My fiancé opted for the biscuits and gravy with eggs and a side of bacon and was VERY happy. And let me tell you, that man is a connoisseur of B's and G's. He even asked for extra gravy. Oh, I almost forgot to mention their bloody mary! I am a huge fan of beets and their bloody clearly has that as a special ingredient as it has that characteristic magenta hue. Not to be hyperbolic but I truly would call it the best bloody I have ever had. It was like a slightly spicy vegetable smoothie. The perfect accompaniment to my trio. Will 100% come back, and hopefully next time we'll be able to bring friends. Love this place!

The service was absolutely great, and the restaurant has a lively, charming vibe. It does tend to get busy, so I'd recommend arriving at a reasonable time. I ordered the French toast, which was clearly their own elevated take on the classic. The flavors were good, but the texture was a little different than I expected and threw me off slightly. It felt more like a chic, creative version of French toast rather than the traditional style, which is the only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five. Everything else was fantastic, though, and I'd definitely come back to explore more of the menu. Worth checking out if you're in the area.

It was Thursday evening and they had a ribs/pulled pork special. We waited about 10 minutes at the bar for a table. The bar and atmosphere is great. Pretty bar lights and an old wood bar. I don't eat a whole lot of deep fried foods and that just seemed like a lot. I sat at the bar, and the bartender got to me pretty quickly and asked me if I wanted a drink. I ordered a glass of wine and a water, but had to ask him for a food menu. I opted for the grilled chicken sandwich with the side salad instead of fries. And then I waited. So long that the woman next to me made comments. People who showed up after I had ordered were eating fish before my sandwich showed up. The chicken was perfectly cooked, but completely lost on the sandwich. There was so much swiss on it, I could only taste cheese and bacon on greasy lightly toasted bread. The salad was barely dressed and just lettuce. I couldn't tell you what flavor the dressing was, but I piled the lettuce on top of the sandwich to try and cut some of the richness. I like cheese as much as the next gal, but it was a chicken sandwich. Even the mustard was lost. The prices are good, the actual restaurant was cute and just across from the capital. The portion was large, it just was lackluster.
