Everything was wonderful. Beautiful atmosphere. Lovely service. Water brought. Silverware replaced. Very good bread (bunny shaped everyday). Crusty outside and chewy inside. Soft butter was delicious. Glass of Grenache and Cabernet franc. Both very nice. Chèvre tart was light and flavorful and came With Bibb lettuce lightly dressed. Onion soup flavor is rich without being heavy but to much bread and cheese went thick too soon. Steak frite was done perfectly with a dab of herbed butter. Frite were crispy. Cod was perfect. Lightly crisped yet very moist. Potato purée and veggies delicious. Nothing overly salted. Absolutely the best creme brûlée. Poached pear was great too. For years, one of our favorite places. Not now... I called ahead at 7:30 and was told there was immediate seating for two. My wife and I arrived to a restaurant with multiple tables open. The front of house receptionist greeted us and offered us a tiny 2 seat table by the bar. Seeing that there were other tables with more space and distance from the bar open, we asked for another table. She smiled disengenuously, and told us that the more desirable tables were not available to us as a party of two (even though for years we have sat as a couple in those same booths). After asking again and letting her know that we were regular patrons, she again smiled and reiterated that the only seats she would offer us were cramped, loud, and not appealing to us. Mind you, they were turning away two regular patrons at the end of their night on a weekday to attempt to optimize their profits. Instead they lost not only that night's business from us, but all future nights as well. Go figure. Good food, lousy service and no sense of loyalty to regular patrons. There are many other fine restaurants in downtown Ithaca. Go to the others. read more

Now playing: "The Hostess from Hell" My partner and I went to dinner here last night. It was 7pm on a Friday and it was a nightmare trying to enjoy our evening. We were treated horribly by the hostess and other staff weren't pleasant either. We were told it was a 30 minute wait and the hostess told us to go to a bar and come back. So we went across the street to a bar for a beer. After 45 minutes (and fire alarm going off at the bar and everyone being evacuated) we go back to Cent-Dix, were not greeted warmly. There still wasn't a table for us and we were told we "can" stand at a small bar in the middle of the floor and order drinks. We mentioned ordering an appetizer while waiting and she snapped, "you can't order food there!" We were spoken down to several times: for standing where we shouldn't stand. Then there was a single chair available at the bar so we chose to sit down and my partner would stand. Thats not allowed. You have to stand over there and wait. If you can overlook the mistreatment of patrons the food is actually very good. Last but not least they took our French fries without asking if we where done. Oops!!! One last thing avoid the minuscule chocolate cake for $8. I mentioned this to the chef and was tapped on my shoulder and told I couldn't speak to him then asked to leave and escorted out the door. I don't hand out five stars to restaurants often, but this place deserves it. My husband and I were in town for our BabyMoon. We wanted to do a fancier dinner one night so we dressed up and headed out. We got to this place right after it opened and it was already full! So if you want to eat here early, get there early. They don't do reservations. We got the option to sit at the bar, so we did. I asked the bar tender on a suggestion for a mocktail. I cannot remember what she made but it was incredible. I had two. My husband also enjoyed his cocktail! We started out with bread; so amazing. We started with the Leek and Guyere Tart. So good!!! It was light which I loved because it didn't fill us up too much to spoil dinner. Especially after bread too. For dinner I got the Roulade de Poulet and my husband got the Cassoulet. Both were outstanding! We ate everything on our plates! I loved that the chicken came with both white and dark meat. We just couldn't get over how delicious the dishes were. We couldn't help ourselves and we even got dessert of Crème Brulee. Incredible. Everything was insanely good. Our server, who was also bar tending was great. She made great suggestions and was so nice. Cannot wait to come back here when we are back in the area. read more

Cafe Cent Dix is one of our best restaurants, and this dinner confirmed that. The food was delicious, and really rises to the level of any Parisian brasserie. A welcome sign that life is gradually improving! But, not everything was perfect. The new menu is fine, but my wife (who often goes vegetarian) was sorry to see that quiche, always one of her favorites are no longer available. A second issue was portion size : in the past, my wife generally ordered two from the small plates section as her dinner, but on this visit, she took the leek and Gruyère tarte and another two small plates, and they weren't enough for dinner. The leek tart slice was like finger-food, maybe enough for two bites. I can see that for an appetizer but as a "petite plat" this was about 1/4 the size it should have been! Her other item, a salad, was equally tiny. The entree portion (duck breast) I ordered was excellent, although again a bit small (5 slices). The chef has a fine touch, just as I remembered it. Wines and cocktails were excellent, and our waiter was very attentive. He was new, so I won't blame him, but my suggestion is that next time, he needs to warn the customer if they don't order enough. Yet in some sense, it shouldn't even have been an issue. It makes no sense to serve minuscule portions at restaurant prices! You also can't reserve here, but that rule is typical of the Ithaca commons. I find it annoying: we often entertain guests at Cornell, and can't take them here because with a visitor, you can't risk being on a two hour wait list. But if you show up when the restaurant opens, that particular issue won't impact you. I do plan to return, but my wife won't join me. Hopefully my next review will be five stars, and I'll be able to talk her into giving the restaurant another chance. read more

This place was fantastic! Came here in late summer for a weekend in the Finger Lakes. My boyfriend had just proposed and took me here as a celebratory dinner. We split the Ladin Tartine which was unique and incredible. I had the duck and he had the steak frites, both of which were spectacular. I have now dined here about four times. The wait staff is hospitable and knowledgeable and always welcoming and they are the best part of the experience. On a recent Friday night, however, my husband walked in to ask for a table for two. The hostess, a woman with two long black braids, and thick black glasses, told him, "It's not going to happen tonight," meaning that she would not have space for him to dine that night. My husband, a black man, was taken aback and politely asked if she might have room at the bar. She said it would be about an hour. He placed his number down and he said he would wait. When we came back around one hour later, I noticed the hostess had seated other people who came after us. I asked if we might sit at a table and not the bar as I noticed tables opening up. She said no. As we dined for about ten minutes, almost ALL the four top booths opened up. This would have been an appropriate time to approach us to say some tables were available and would we like to move there. Instead, she seated other parties of two who came after us at the booths. To me, the entire experience with the hostess was a nightmare. It was so clear she had racial biases. This was such a negative experience for us. I don't want this review to detract from the great wait staff and quality of the food. This review is purely about the hostess who needs to be retrained for courtesy, diplomacy, and DEI sensitivity. read more

The conduct of this restaurant and its owner is possibly fraudulent and beyond condescending. This restaurant is listed as accepting gift cards that work at a variety of restaurants in downtown Ithaca. Because the gift cards do not work at every restaurant in Ithaca, they must have agreed to accept payment on these cards in return for the advertising offered by the cards. The advertising, indeed, worked, as my girlfriend and I went here because they were listed as accepting the $50 gift card we had. When it came time to pay, they refused payment on the gift card because they said it didn't work on their system, an issue that they claimed they would work out with the downtown Ithaca gift card the next day. Even more absurdly, they refused to accept payment in full on my credit card, subject to me leaving the gift card, them working out the technical issue with the card, and crediting that amount back. Instead, we were treated to an hour of condescension, total denial of responsibility for the fact that they are voluntarily advertising their services through the cards, and cavalier assurances that while our frustration was understood, there was literally nothing they were willing to do. I have, candidly, never been treated with such contempt in my life. Businesses need to take responsibility for their advertising, and if you voluntarily hold yourself out as accepting a certain form of payment, you have to take it. Especially if $50 is as trivial a sum as they made it sound when they were mocking us. I'm happy to believe that ultimately, this is a problem with the Ithaca gift cards and their systems, and the food was good. If indeed the Ithaca gift cards are using their name without their permission, I'm also happy to accept that that is where the fraud is (though obviously that's something for them to work out with the gift card people, not a loss to be absorbed by customers). This may not be a problem for everyone. But their treatment of us was absolutely unacceptable and beyond the pale for any restaurant. They certainly lost us. read more

One of my all-time favorite restaurants, not just in Ithaca but anywhere (and I travel all over the world for work, so I'm casting a pretty wide net). Great cocktails...honest, attentive service...unctuously good French food, unafraid of butter and sauces and everything good. It can be really hard to score a table on a Saturday night with the "no-reservations" policy, but I understand why that's better for the business. I've been there probably a dozen times now and have never had a bad meal. Things that would make me give five stars? Reservations and a dessert menu with some vegan and nut-free options. This restaurant is so good, it's worth the wait and the money. (I'm not a wealthy person.) We started at the place across the street, also relatively expensive, to have a drink while we waited for a table at Cent-Dix. We were there for half an hour and hadn't received our drink order so we went back to sit at the bar at Cent-Dix. Two generous Manhattans later, our table was ready. The service was impeccable: friendly yet professional down to the last detail. We've eaten here on other special occasions and they never fail to please. The food is exquisite! So much better than any other place in Ithaca! You order all at once and the meal comes in courses. We shared a green salad and a small plate of camembert, with candied walnuts, tarragon, and pistachio butter. For dinner we both ordered the Thursday plat du jour, moules frites. The mussels were tender and the sauce was so delicious I wanted to pick up my bowl and drink it down, but that's what the slender crunchy fries are for, dredging in sauce or aoli, your choice. We each ordered a glass of wine to go with dinner and then finished by sharing a cherry frangipani and two cappuccinos. I'd never had the cherry and almond tart before and it was divine. Such a lovely romantic evening, enjoying each other's company and taking time over a sumptuous meal. I love that they don't rush you! It's a small restaurant and there's a pleasant hum of voices but you can easily hear the conversation at your own table and even though there might be a two-top right next to yours, your feel like you're in your own world of fine dining. I've eaten here twice and am still waiting for that "wow" moment, but I would say it's decent French food. My last meal was a month ago and I had the Steak Tartare and the Poulet Roti. The chicken was excellent, though I remember the tartare being a little better the first time we came. I believe I had the Steak Frites the first time and remember it being pretty good. Hidden gem on restaurant row! My boyfriend and I came for our anniversary and there was a line waiting to go in before they opened, that's how we knew we were in the right spot. Romantic ambiance with spectacular service. We enjoyed French onion soup, the appetizer tart, steak, the vegetable entree, and two desserts. Fabulous French cuisine paired with delicious cocktails and nice selection of wine - wine on tap also very nice (ordered the white Bordeaux). Every dish is exquisitely prepared, from the premieres to entrees. For a family of four, we had 2 premieres (a chilled mussel special, and grilled little gems), 2 hors d'oeuvres (beef tartare and frontage de tete), an onion soup, and 2 entrées (cassoulet and ricotta gnocchi). We also ordered one dessert to share (the chocolate cake was divine!). With cocktails, wine, and bread service, plus tip, the cost was ~$50 pp. But this is more than reasonable for the quality of food and excellent service! For other reviewers who complained about portion size, all I can say is that we were very full and happy with our meals when we left! The hors d'oeuvres and soup crock are actually a very nice size, and premieres are expected to be small - they're meant to be a taste that precedes the appetizers. The house made bread service is also worth trying! Agree with other reviewers that the inability to make reservations is limiting, however we arrived at 5:45 pm (they opened at 5:30) on a Saturday night and were able to get a table with at least 2-3 other tables still open at that time. Came on a Tuesday before they opened so there weren't any lines, and was immediately seated perfectly right by the window. Typically from other French restaurants I've tried, food portions are usually quite small, however the portions here were pretty filling. No complaints about that! It would have been helpful if the waiter had given us a rough idea of how much food we were ordering, but all in all it was good. I wasn't a big fan of the croque madame though because of the sauce mornay. It was too much and a bit overwhelming. I was surprised by how large the order was considering it was a hor d'oeuvres. We recently went because they advertise on the Downtown Ithaca Gift Card as a restaurant accepting THE Downtown Ithaca Gift Card. When we gave them a gift card loaded with $50 Cent Dix acknowledged they are supposed to accept it as a form of payment and tried swiping it... they were having technical issues with their system (likely due to their recent reopening) and at any other establishment this would have been a non-issue resolved with the simple solution of the restaurant confirming the value of the gift card they advertise as taking, and then figuring out the technical issues with the third party Gift Card vendor and their system after the customer left.... But of course this was not the case and a reasonable solution could not be achieved at Cent Dix. If you're list as accepting a local gift card (which you initially acknowledged you're supposed to accept before backpedaling), please don't try to get me to believe you didn't agree to do that and you no longer have to accept it even though you initially were trying to fulfill it's known role as a payment method for YOUR restaurant. And IF the third party gift card vendor did list you without your permission, you need to sue them, not treat your customers like shit. The owner of this restaurant was mocking us to his staff and other customers in addition to refusing to deduct the value of the gift card they list as taking from our bill...the cherry topper, them threatening to call the police because we insisted they answer the question of why one of the following two solutions we were proposing would not work for them: Solution Option 1) confirm the value of the gift card, accept the gift card and then resolve it with the Downtown Ithaca consortium in the morning since there was a prior agreement there to be advertised as accepting the card. Solution Option 2) charge us in full and collect the gift card we tried to pay with, and refund us the additional $50 we had to pay out of pocket when the technical issues with the gift card and your system have been resolved. Instead we were berated and publicly humiliated, being gaslit as if we were ridiculous for trusting they would accept a form of payment they list as accepting. The only answer the owner would provide on the "why" was "I'm not going to do that, it's too much work". My advice, close the restaurant again and fix your poor management and your waitstaff's poor table side manner before reopening to serve average at best French cuisine. read more

The place The place is very small and they don't except reservations so if you go around prime time except a wait. The staff Our waitress was great she answered all our questions and was back to check on us every few minutes to make sure we had everything we needed. She explained everything on the menu. The food I ordered the Bibb salad to start and I must say I was really disappointed. It literally was a few pieces of lettuce and weak flavorless vinaigrette supposedly with herbs for 7 bucks. It had no flavor and not worth ordering. For dinner I ordered the roasted chicken and was impressed. Normally this is a dish I avoid because it normally is dry or unflavored. However they did a great job it came on a bed of mashed potatoes and green beans. My wife had the Escargot which she loves however she said it was bland but not terrible. For dinner she had the PARISIAN GNOCCHI which she said was ok. The verdict I really cant recommend this place the food is at best average and our bill was 70 bucks for two. The french onion soup was archetypal; the Béarnaise sauce on the asparagus was rich yet light; moules et frites was like a taste of Belgium; chicken roulade was savory, tender and beautifully plated. Escargots are something that I normally have in a French restaurant, but the ones here were very oily and tasted super bland and earthy (not sure if the earthy taste was a plus or minus). I've been here several times over the past few years, none of which have I had to wait -- perhaps because I went in on a weeknight, and quite early. I think that over the past several months this location has gained so popularity, though -- kudos, it's well-deserved. Ambiance is somehow both upscale and still bistro-casual - -the dark wood and pretty antique mirrors and prints contribute to that combination. It's small and intimate -- which is great in some ways but on the other hand the two-top tables are placed quite close together near the front area -- meaning noisy diners at neighboring tables can get annoying -- you inevitably can hear each other -- if you want privacy and quiet. (This set-up is more common in NYC - -not so much in Ithaca.) Food is extraordinary - there is very little to fault it. I have to admit that, as a vegetarian -- don't hate me, and there are a lot of us in Ithaca or I wouldn't even mention it -- I am un peu disappointed that there are so few entree options available -- usually it's the pasta/gnocchi dish, Otherwise you can do some combination of the very light "premieres", one or two of the salades, the pommes frites. I wish there were just one or two more substantial options. What do I expect? Well, and I'm probably going to sound like a major ass here, but as a student I lived in France and so I know it's possible to have real quality bistro-esque French food that does not contain meat. The selection of wines and other drinks is pretty much impeccable. (I love the wines on tap -- anything on tap, really.) Service is exemplary -- just really professional and, you know, upscale without being snobby, fussy, invasive, overly rushed or cold. Other restaurants in the neighborhood could learn from them; it's what you expect but sometimes don't get in determinedly casual Ithaca. Cent-Dix is more expensive than befits an "everyday" restaurant for most people but what you get is not just a meal but an experience, one that's consistently high-end and comfortable time after time. I'm going to give le Cafe Cent-Dix five stars but if I could I'd give it 4.5, due to the vegetarian thing. read more

My wife and I were staying down the street and my wife has an extremely wide array of food intolerances. The bartender and chef were extremely accommodating. They were fantastic. She enjoyed the steak frites. I had the baked Pernod oysters and whole trout with broccoli rabe and parsnips, which was perhaps the best sea food dish I've ever eaten. Both dishes were prepared to perfection. The service at the bar was excellent whether it was wine and food pairing advice or sorting out my wife's food intolerances with the chef. I had an apple tart that was made with flavorless apples that the chef had tried to disguise with about a pound of spice, and my partner had chocolate cake that was dry and a little bland. This was especially disappointing as this is one of the few places in Ithaca where the portions aren't so enormous that eating three courses is impossible.
