The salad is fresh, the roasted potatoes are crispy, and the fondue and/or hot stone-cooked meats and vegetables are delicious. Best accidental discovery ever!…read more We were wandering the streets of Paris on our last night looking for a restaurant for one last memorable meal. On a whim we came in here because we saw that they served fondue and we thought that would be a good idea for supper. The restaurant name translates into "Fortunate like Alexander" in English. Did that ever turn out to be a fantastic decision. Read on to hear why. The restaurant's owner has to be one of the kindest, charismatic people that I have ever met. He welcomed us with open arms and we got to chat with him quite a bit and learn more about him. He also was very kind to us and gave us many free drinks just because he was a very generous person. This was completely unexpected and we were really grateful for this. In addition to a welcoming owner the atmosphere here in general was just relaxing and inviting. We got talking to the people at the table next to us and it turns out that they were regulars who lived in the neighbourhood and came here frequently because they had befriended the own. Meanwhile two buskers came by who played some mellow guitar music to add to the ambiance. Now I can finally talk about the food. We ordered a simple cheese fondue and it was wildly delicious. It came out very quickly and we enjoyed every mouthful. We were given plenty of bread to soak it all up and there was also a salad included so we could get some vegetables. Honestly my experience was so good here that I was almost sad to leave the restaurant at the end of the night. We wanted a memorable, final meal in Paris and boy did we ever get it. After eating here I feel fortunate like Alexander.

Excellent authentic spicy Chinese hot pot perfect for a cold…read morerainy night. We ordered the spicy shrimp hot pot. If you order the all you can eat, then they give you a paper menu where you order the raw items for your hot pot. Make sure to order a bowl of rice. The first thing that came out was a stir fry of shrimp (in shell and head on) in spicy sauce with lotus root, celery and sliced rice cakes. You eat the shrimp or whatever meat you choose. This is where a bowl of rice is perfect. Once you are finished with the meat/seafood, then they stop by with broth to add to your pot and turn on the induction burner. Once the soup is boiling, then start cooking your raw items. Keep in mind that anything floating at the top will catch the chili oil so be prepared for some spicy bites. You can order more ingredients through the paper menu. I found it to be way too much food, but I eat like a bird. It was so good - spicy smokey warm and hearty. They understand Mandarin Chinese and French so I was able to get by with my broken tourist French and 2 year old level Mandarin. Luckily my friend is more fluent in both languages so she did most of the ordering and asking questions. It was a great break from French food during my visit.

The great Yelp reviews led me to Auciel. This particular restaurant specializes in hot-pot cooking…read moreor Fondue (in French). In Fondue, they give you veggies and meats and you dip them in hotpots of broth. Tables consist of ceramic tops which keep the broth warm while you do your tabletop "cooking". But we came here for the non-hotpot dishes. We had the lamb cumin dish and the sautéed chicken szechwan. The lamb cumin dish was perfection--perfect cubes of lamb covered in cumin with lots of spicy peppers. The chicken dish was really tiny bits of chicken sautéed in chili peppers--nice and spicy. The downside of this dish was that the morsels of chicken also included bits of bone. So technically they chopped up chicken into tiny pieces, bones and all , and sautéd all of it. So much care has to be taken while you eat this dish so that you don't swallow any bones. I didn't have a problem. We also ordered a side dish of white rice which was a little sticky as most Chinese rice tends to be. At the end of the meal we handed them a credit card which they claimed was declined. We had used it two hours earlier so we knew it was a good card. We gave them cash but our belief was that they wanted cash all along and just accidentally "mishandled" the credit card process so it wouldn't go through. Once we got home, we double checked with the credit card company and they said the card was fine and they did not see that a restaurant had declined the card. So, liar, liar pants on fire, if you want cash from your patrons, then put up a "No credit cards" sign and be done with it. We liked the food and service but don't like the shenanigans with the credit card which cost them one star.

A family tradition, this store has been operating in Montargis since 1903 before moving around and settling in its current location. Along with pralines and chocolates, which are made fresh daily, the confiserie's specialties include Amandas and Mirabos (chocolate covered nougatine), Kaloudjas (grilled almonds coated with gianduja, or hazelnut paste), Givrettes and Grêlons (caramelized roasted almonds and hazelnuts), and 18 different chocolate bars, including flavors such as orange-clove, bitter sesame, salted caramel and, of course, the famous praline. I have to say, we did not buy any pralines or chocolates here. So, why am I writing a review? You see, at the back of store is a four top. It goes unnoticed unless you focus on it. There is a chocolate fondue menu, which is based on the different types of chocolate sold here. The four of us decided to take the table and order different kinds of fondue. What followed was a a lot of "ooooh" and "aaaahhh" from all four of us. A shot glass of the chocolate you choose from the menu is served with biscotti, an assortment of French cookies, and fruit, followed by your choice of coffee or espresso. See attached picture for the fondue serving. I am fairly positive the pralines are excellent. However, the chocolate fondue serving is something you don't want to miss if you are in the area.

One of them came over to us to explain their menu and the different options we could get. I decided on the cod in creamy sorrel sauce and my girlfriend got the smoked salmon and spinach pie. Both were great, but the best part of the meal was the bread pudding with wine jam that we ordered for dessert. The wife told us that the recipe for the jam was made in-house by the chef who experimented with a few herbs and spices that she at first found doubtful, but very quickly fell in love with (as did we). I'd definitely recommend it. What makes this experience five-star worthy though was the atmosphere. Everyone was so friendly and talkative that I could relax and unwind from a pretty exhausting day. At the other Parisian restaurants we visited, the customers kept to themselves, without much interaction with the staff. Here, I was talking to the tables beside me, and it was actually another couple that suggested we get the bread pudding. Thoroughly enjoyed and wish I could go back. P.S. The wife speaks fluent French (obvously), English, Spanish (wow), and some Chinese (standing ovation right here)

We wanted to try raclette for the first time, so we visited this restaurant for dinner…read more Boyfriend ordered a martini, and was surprised when the waiter asked him if he wanted a red or a white martini. In his many years of ordering martinis worldwide, he has never been asked such a question! The waiter oddly insisted that there's both red ones and white ones, which makes us curious as to what a red martini would have in it! Boyfriend wisely opted for the "white" one, very dry, and it met his very low expectations. I ordered a less complicated Aperol Spritz. Boyfriend ordered the frog legs as a starter, which he had all to himself, because I just couldn't. We shared the Raclette with Slices of Duck and Potatoes. To state the obvious, this is a lot of cheese. Basically, cheese with other food items playing a minor role. The waiter put a very 19th century looking contraption on the table, and told us to be sure not to touch the cheese block with the sides, as it would fry the cheese, and bad things might happen! (Like a fire?? Is this thing even safe? Oh, the things that you could not do in America abounds here). Regardless, the Raclette was quite cheesy and delicious, and we ate most of it. (Did I mention that it was a LOT of cheese)? A nice bottle of red wine accompanied our cheese meal, and we ordered two Absinthes as after-dinner drinks. The absinthe (again perhaps stating the obvious) was REALLY strong!! I poured the remainder of our bottle of flat water into it and asked for more. All in all, I had a lot of fun here. We laughed a lot, and the bill was around 100 euros for all of that (4 drinks, bottle of wine, starter, shared raclette plate). Boyfriend didn't like it as much as I did, but I would definitely come back to try the red martini, if nothing else!

The restaurant has a cool old school ambiance. The decorations make you feel like you are in a different era. It only seemed like there was one server working but he was quick and efficient. We ultimately decided on getting their fixed menu special that was about $30 euros each. To begin we ordered a salad and I ordered escargot. The salad was tasty for my wife but could use a little bit more dressing. The escargot was great. Those six little snails are made with garlic, butter, and tasty herbs. They were also fairly big. For our main dish my wife ordered a beef dish that smelled and tasted wonderful. I ordered the fried duck. It was so good but the fried potatoes or croquets were a welcome surprise. For dessert we both ordered the creme brûlée. It wasn't the best we had in France but it was pretty good. The bathroom downstairs was clean albeit the ceiling is low so if you are tall prepare to squat. The negatives for the restaurant are the lack of a happy hour. It seems most restaurants around offer some good deals but they do not. That would really bring this restaurant to a five star place in my opinion. Still worth a visit though.
