We made a reservation and were able to get a beautiful table right by the window which was amazing. I will say, their food is outstanding and they have very attentive service. The aligot potatoes are an absolute must! I loved the authenticity of their food and was very impressed with the location and decor. This all being said, I have given them 3 stars, as I believe they took advantage of us as they knew we were tourists. We found unexpected charges on our bill and were pressured into leaving a large tip (our server asked us out loud and recommended a percentage which felt very awkward). I would definitely give it another shot here, as the food was outstanding, but I was a bit turned off by the way that they treated tourists. I went to this bistro on Monday, June 19, for my final night in Paris. I was looking for authentic French cuisine and this was it. They offer both French and English menus but I tried to be more local with my bits and pieces of French but the English menu is much easier for me to read. I had an appertif consistent of red wine and blackberry liquor which tasted great along with Escargot, which is probably the most recognized French dish outside of the baguette and croissant. It was hard to eat at first until the waiter suggested that I use a napkin rather than the tongs. It tasted great despite the origin of the meat. There was some pause until my lamb chops came which were great and medium as requested. There was some vegetable ratatouille-like side along with a salad. At the end I had Swiss ice cream which was good but not too out of the ordinary. We're in France where the culture is different so I'm not sure if I handled the tipping correctly. I also read that you ask for the bill, they don't bring it to you since that is considered rude as if they were rushing you out. The phrase for the check is "l'addition s'il vous plaît" All in all France was great aside from the super expensive taxi from the airport when taking the metro would've saved almost 100 euro. My friend Ava B. worked for a big DC law firm for many years, and when she quit, she did what many have dreamed about and straight-up moved to Paris. She rented a cute apartment in the Marais, where I went to visit her a couple weeks ago with our mutual friend Maka E. We got a taste of her Parisian life, starting with a wonderful dinner at Le Bistrot des Vosges, a pleasant walk from her place. I suppose I'd pictured her, lazily, in a beret and Breton stripes, eating cheese and baguettes at a lovely little bistro, and honestly, it might as well have been this exact restaurant. Le Bistrot des Vosges felt quintessentially Parisian, quaint and comfortable, decorated with the kind of wall art that comes up when you google "vintage french posters." We went at 8:00 on a Thursday night after calling ahead to delay our 6:30 reservation. It wasn't that busy--it seemed like a no-fuss neighborhood restaurant. We got a cozy corner table against a window looking out to the street and settled in for a long catch-up dinner. Service was helpful and friendly, even when we were the last customers left. I wanted a glass of red wine with my dinner, and Le Bistrot des Vosges had three options, all French wines, available in 12cl, 25cl, or 50cl pours. I got 25cl of the 2020 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Barnabes, a very nice wine and a heavy pour, 25cl being a third of a bottle. The food was delicious. We started with the French onion soup, which is the restaurant's claim to fame (the menu calls it, modestly, "one of the best in Paris...according to our customers"). This was an extraordinary French onion soup, with soft, sweet onion, decadent, gooey cheese, and slices of baguette soaking up that rich, flavorful beef broth. It was perfect for a cold night. I cleaned my bowl and could probably have cleaned another. I did need room, though, for my tartare Aveyronnais. This was an entrée portion of steak tartare with shallot, onion, egg, and parsley on a bed of Genovese pesto with plenty of Rodez, a hard Aveyron cheese, shaved on top. It was hearty and satisfying, served with good fries and a small arugula salad. I also tried some of Ava's Aveyron-style terrine and it was excellent, served with salad and cornichons. Ava suggested the homemade fondant for dessert, and since she was right about the onion soup and everything else, we followed her lead. This was a fantastic dessert, a warm, barely set chocolate fondant topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. I loved Le Bistrot de Vosges. It was a charming, convivial restaurant with great food at a reasonable enough price point that I'd go quite often if I lived in Paris. I don't live in Paris, of course, but at least Ava is there, eating her French onion soup at that corner table by the window. I hope to go back one of these days and join her again. read more

Another accidental find. We dropped in for linner - the meal between lunch and dinner when it doesn't make sense what to eat, but you gots to eat. We got there b/w 3:30-4. There were a handful of people dining alone and a couple of chic older french ladies who looked like they were having a ball. As my travel companion was not adventurous with her food choices, she got the burger. I wanted to share the escargot, but she wasn't down so we got the charcuterie instead. I ended up getting the pork chops which came with a salad and a potato dish that was so good I almost asked for more. My chops were perfectly cooked. I finished my meal fairly quickly. I didn't get to try the burger but my friend said it was good. The service was great considering there was literally only one guy waiting on everyone. He had his work cut out for him. This review is long overdue, having visited Le Bistrot des Vosges in the Spring of 2018. However, you will not forget the experience. My friends in Dijon know about this restaurant and for good reason, one of whom visits Le Bistrot des Vosges nearly every time she is in Paris. We sat down for lunch service on a Saturday and folks were coming in steadily. We were fortunate to beat the moderate rush. The menu remarks how Parisiens enjoy their French onion soup, here simply called a roasted onion soup. This is probably the restaurant's prime calling card you should not ignore. The execution on all fronts brought this simple soup to a pinnacle I had not experienced. They navigate the tricky balance of the right level of salt that is all too often overwrought. This allows the savory beef broth and the taste of the sweet onions to come through marvelously as intended, each serving as counterpoint balanced under the cover of the melted cheese and crouton that itself has a savory, acceptably mild salty, and carb turning sweet balance. I still recall to this day how good it was and it set a standard unsurpassed. I followed the soup with butcher's steak and frites with a salad cooked to medium rare. This would have been a statement for most any restaurant or bistro, and the meat was tender and flavorful on its own. However here, the soup is still whispering on your palate and the fries and salad do not detract. This makes for a filling meal and a great value. As bistros go in Paris, numerous and good everywhere, I would rate Le Bistrot des Vosges in the upper third from my experience in Paris and an even better value. Service was great and they have a menu in English. Service was good and the bathroom was clean. Le Bistrot des Vosges should be a stop if in the neighborhood or worthy of visit from other parts of France. I'll return one day from the States. Four solid stars! read more

Late lunch when i tried to order the French Onion Soup, told they were out and would take 40 minutes. Fine I said, I'll have the Sausage Aligot while I wait. Sausage Aligot was lovely basically as a fondue with meaty cheese to dip the sausage in and spread on bread. Came with garlic oil which I just poured into the cheese. We were a little turned off by the older gentleman waiter who asked us to tip when it's well known that you don't need to tip in restaurants in Paris. Despite me ordering the prime rib cooked medium, it was originally cooked rare. In addition, it was grisly, fatty, tasteless, and difficult to cut with a steak knife. When I pointed out to the waiter that it was undercooked, the kitchen put it back on the grill and cooked it more. It was still grisly, fatty, tasteless, and difficult to cut with a knife afterwards. I ate about four bites and couldn't eat anymore. The manager asked why I didn't eat it but didn't take the dish off our bill when I explained it wasn't palatable. Perhaps this is how Parisians eat their prime rib and I am spoiled by the delicious, tender and perfectly cooked prime rib in the United States, specifically, Texas. In contrast to the steak, I found the chunky French fries delightful. My partner enjoyed his sausage and creamed potatoes with garlic sauce. I didn't recognize the name of the wines and the bartender show me the places where the wines were from. The aligot is soooo good and so worth the extra charge. A bustling restaurant. It was one of those times that I regretted my order. I should have had the house specialty of onion soup. It was being served all around me and looked great. I ordered the boiled egg and tomato appetizer. Although there was nothing wrong with it there were two hard boiled eggs with sliced tomatoes and a dish of mayonnaise. Nothing special. I'm rating this restaurant a 1 because I can't rate them a zero. When we walked in the restaurant was pretty empty but they didn't want to seat us without a reservation, we only wanted some drinks and an appetizer, and we sat in the back which was fine since we didn't have a reservation. My partner speaks French a little so they always try to speak some because we don't want to assume or expect anyone to know English. After we were seated we didn't get any water or their complimentary Olives for over 10 minutes. The woman who sat at the table next to us also without a reservation got water and Olives immediately. It took over 15 minutes for them to take our order. The restaurant was still not busy with at least 3 waiters or more. Soon more people came in without a reservation and they were all put in the front. It took over 30 minutes for them to give us the check after we were done eating and drinking. There was also offensive art on the wall. When we paid for the bill we put down the wrong card and my partner said immediately "no I meant this card" and the watier who also knew English stared at my partner as they said no and charged the wrong card. He looked at us and said "who would I give the receipt to" since neither of us are men. This restaurant is also in the lgbtq area of Paris. This place is not worth it, there is amazing food down the block with nice waiters, amazing decorations and fantastic food. It's called Chez Janou, it's a 3 minute walk from this restaurant with the best food I've ever had and worth the wait. You need to call for a reservation but they will try to get you in if you wait. Or get to the restaurant at 6:30 and get a table to order drinks and get food at 7pm when the kitchen opens, it's absolutely worth it. read more

ALIGOT!!!! If you're a tourist, you probably don't know what that means - let me help you out. Aligot is a potato dish from southwest France that uses cheese and creme fraiche to produce the cheesiest, silkiest, most delicious mashed potatoes you'll ever see. The texture is like fondue (see photos) but the flavor isn't overwhelmingly cheesy. Add some of the chopped garlic in olive oil that is served with, and you are in for total carbohydrate joy. So, let's step back because we're talking about Le Bistro de Vosges here. The restaurant is just off Place de Vosges and obviously, serves Aligot. The interior is larger than most restaurants in the area, and is nicely decorated with vintage posters. We started with onion soup which was really good - a large crock with melted gruyere and a light, flavorful broth with plenty of carmelized onions. You could make a light meal out of this alone. For a main, you have the option to get a large bowl of Aligot, which I did, figuring that there are few places where eating a giant bowl of cheesy potatoes was both acceptable and encouraged. You've got to take those opportunities, man. What arrived was a giant cauldron of delicious Aligot, enough to feed a dozen hungry French lumberjacks. It was rich, creamy and probably terrible for me but I DIDN'T CARE. My friend opted for a turkey escallope with ham and cheese - sort of a cordon bleu, which she liked very much. This is a fine place within walking distance from the Place de la Bastille and a hop away from the Place des Vosges, as it is aptly named. It is one of those restaurants that does not close in between lunch and dinner, so you can go in at 3:00pm and have a nice meal. Also, while it may not be easy to find V options around, a few items on the menu will do (not vegan, but vegetarian), and I recommend the Tartine with goat cheese that comes on with a salad. It is fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced for Paris. Service is courteous and the location is quite lovely on Beaumarchais. Another plus: it has wi-fi. read more

This little cafe holds a special place for me. When we first came to Paris in 2010, on our way out for sightseeing, it started to rain...hard...so we ducked in here for lunch. Naturally, we came back to visit the old neighborhood we once stayed in, and well, we were hungry cause we just got off the train, and again, we found ourselves here. Still friendly and inviting. They had an AC unit blowing cold air into the dining area. We ordered a bottle of wine which was very good, and we both ordered the grilled turkey with cheese, crispy potatoes, and a small salad. French comfort food that tasted great! They have these large windows in front and it's great to people watch. It's great to come back to a familiar place.
