Good stop for a galette! They've got some beautiful tables and table set ups and we were able to sit under the awning right outside, great for people watching! The menu is all French so that was a bit harder for us but we quickly figured out most of the menu was crepes/Galettes with various toppings/fillings. I ordered the smoked salmon one with goat cheese and mesclun. It tasted good! This little brasserie looked to be one of the more appealing ones along Rue Montorgueil. Many of the others I passed had too many people drinking and too few people eating. This one had a 50/50 mix of both people eating and drinking. So inside I went. Everything was fine. The interior was fine (see my pic). The service was fine (even though one girl ran the entire show). Even the food was fine. Although my foie gras with potatoes was slightly a bit greasy. The people sitting on the right and left of me were both Americans but not everyone was a tourist. There was a good amount of Parisians dining inside as well. By the way, if you get a chance to go to this street, Rue Montorgueil, I recommend it. It's a little off the beaten path but if you go, you'll find a lot of eateries, pasteries, cheese shops, butcher shops, etc. Stohrer, the oldest pastry shop in Paris, is located a few doors down from this restaurant. read more

I popped in to Le Comptoir du Commerce for a coffee on a rainy Wednesday a little while ago. The (dry) open tables and the "service continu" sign are what really drew me in. Although I didn't eat, the menu looked fairly extensive and traditionally French. The service was friendly and prices were decent. I came here for lunch with some friends and we had the pleasure of eating outside. The set up of the restaurant was really quaint and a pleasurable experience. I ordered the TRADITIONAL TARTAR with Fries/ Salad. The tartar was delicious and complimented the salad and the fries really well believe it or not. We came here on a recommendation of the concierge at the hotel. It's a tightly packed restaurant where you and your table neighbor are literally touching. I ordered the duck confit that I thought was fantastic. We also sat next to some really nice people. Overall, there's a lot of hustle and bustle and most of the business is made of locals. Location! Location! Location! That's the key to business, or so they say. And that's what Comptoir du Commerce has going for it. Situated where rue Montorgueil ends and rue des Petits Carreaux begins, the restaurant is at one of the lively corners of the lively Montorgueil district, which now thanks to being featured in Lonely Planet and New York Times articles is the third most visited street in Paris. Fitting, then, that the Comptoir serves food that I would only serve my worst enemy. Or, at the same level, mouth breathing Anglophone tourists with no sense of voice modulation. So it's with extra bitterness, then, that my experience with this anal cavity of a restaurant came when taking an old American friend out for a casual dinner. Worse so that he wasn't a mere visitor to Paris, but a law student studying here. Neither my worst enemy, nor a clueless tourist... yet we still ate here. Or something akin to eating. My steak, ordered à point (medium rare) came out fully cooked and resembling the rubber sole of a well-worn Doc Martens boot. My wife's duck? It may as well have been from KFC. Yes, I know KFC doesn't serve duck... that's the point! And the coup de grace? My friend's vegetarian appetizer and vegetarian dish were... the same salad. Only in different sizes! Now that last part may be (barely) forgiven. Vegetarians are few and far in between in this land, and procuring vegetarian food outside the odd Indian joint or posh fast food lunch spot is like pulling teeth. But any waitstaff resembling a professional would have alerted us to the fact that the two dishes were, in fact, identical. But again, it's all about location, location, location. So if you want a beer or Coca Cola (I dare not say coffee, as that requires preparation), this is an adequate place to sit on the terrace and enjoy the buzzing Montorgueil atmosphere. Food was fantastic and service was very prompt. My wife got the French onion soup (not overly salty at all) and the chicken mushroom pasta. I got the duck confit. They were al really good portions and delicious. We ended with the ice cream puff covered in melted chocolate which was amazing and two espressos. Decently priced! Would definitely recommend this to friends. Don't believe the idiots that just grabbed "a coffee" and said the "ambiance" isn't very good, just to give it 2 stars. It's a restaurant. We came here for a light supper after a long day of exploring. My 3 girls shared the chicken salad and enjoyed their own individual dessert crepe creations. The service staff was friendly and accommodating. My galette dinner crepe was the special of the day and was more than enough for dinner. What a disappointment! On a whim I brought a Belgian visitor to this brasserie thinking that with the place always packed it couldn't be bad. The waiter was so brisk and hurried that he mistook my order of a salad poulet (chicken salad) for a poulet normade (chicken cutlet in cream sauce). When the dish arrived, I told him it wasn't what I ordered and he looked at me in total disbelief. I was starving and my guest was in a rush so I accepted the dish anyway. No apologies were offered. Basic. And delicious. Huge bowls of onion soup are comforting and perfect for warming up. Endive, walnut and blue cheese salad is awesomely scrumptious too. Rounding out the menu are the likes of Croque Monsieur, frites and plenty more Parisian standards ... don't expect anything fancy but if you're looking for a quick bite (or relatively quick - this is still Paris after all) in a cosy setting, Le Comptoir du Commerce cannot be beat. My husband and I just happened to walk in this place after the place we wanted to go to was booked for the night, and we were very happy with our experience. The restaurant was small but looked really cool inside with wood panneling on the walls and hip lighting. Their cheese plate was the best we have had in our three nights in Paris with about 5 or 6 different types of cheese. The duck confit was also very good although it was fatty, but that is to be expected with duck. We also loved the fondue chocolate dessert.
