The best pizza in Tuscany…read more I came here on a summer night and it felt like a foreign film; Italian families dining amongst the rolling hills of Tuscany, toasting one another with wine and generally enjoying life in a way that's somehow so effortless in Italy when the weather is warm. My Florentine companions tried to keep the constituent ingredients of the lardo pizza from me, thinking that I might be turned off by cured strips of fatback. (Boy, were they wrong!) When I squeezed the secret out of them I was even more excited to eat this pizza (which you should not miss). One of the most magical nights I've spent in Italy was dinner at Palazzo Pretorio. Absolutely worth the short trip from the center of Florence!

The menu is by and large neopolitan, which is fine by me because I happen to love the food of the South and it's a welcome change from the local fare. This is the best - I repeat: The Best Pizza in the entire area, bar none. If pizza is your thing, this is your place when you are in Chianti! My only criticism here is the service. While Giovanni, the pizziaiuolo, is an artist and all 'round great guy, the waitresses are slow and about as disineterested as can be. Try and get one of them to even pretend she cares! If the owners could clamp down on them, they'd have a perfect spot here (and 5 stars from me!)

Our server told us that this previously a cave. How often do you get to dine in a cave? The inside of the restaurant is of this stone like space. We were immediately captivated. While it does not currently have a Michelin rating, we were told it previously had a Micheline rating. The atmosphere is that of a cave...cool, a little damp, and intimate. San Guiseppe has wine cellar, according to staff, date back. We felt totally and complete immersed in history and that was only the building. centuries of Sienese life. The cuisine honors Tuscan tradition while elevating it through precision and care. Each dish showcases excellent ingredients and confident execution, embracing regional flavors rather than reinventing them. San Guissppe feature traditional dishes such as handmade pasta, rich sauces, and tenders meats showcasing distinct flavors with bold seasoning. We order lasaguna and cheese salad...absolutely superb! Our servers were superior...waiting on you hand and foot. You did not ask for anything as it was already there. Our server, Marco, was kind, humorous and knowledgeable. Since it was our first time to the restaurant he was super patient and informative regarding menu items. La Taverna di San Giuseppe has s long-term Michelin recognition for a reason...superior food and excellent service in a very unique space. We savored every bite and sip we consumed in San Giuseppe. When we are in Tuscany again, we will make a beeline for this restaurant.

Taverna di San Giuseppe was a disappointing meal for us, especially in a city with so many great…read moredining options. We ended up here by mistake (confused it with another spot), and unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. The restaurant fills up with reservations for two seatings, and from the moment we sat down the pace felt rushed. We ordered drinks and a starter while deciding on the rest, but multiple staff members kept coming by trying to take our full order. It felt like they were pushing to move things along quickly. There were a couple positives. The chicken livers to start were quite tasty and something we didn't see often on other menus. The primi were underwhelming. The pasta didn't taste fresh like many other trattorias in Siena, and the dishes overall were just average. The lasagna in particular was mushy, and the sauces didn't stand out. The secondi were slightly better -- pork ribs, Barolo-braised beef, and a "small chicken" -- but still nothing that justified the higher prices. They do have an underground wine cellar built into a cave, which is interesting to see, but there are other places in Siena with much larger and more impressive cellar spaces. Also worth noting, they add a "10% tax" charge rather than the typical €2 coperto per person. Overall, a rushed and fairly mediocre meal at a higher price point. With so many better places to eat in Siena, this is one I'd skip.

By the way, one can…read morefind many places in Lucca that cook excellent, aforementioned culinary items unforgettably. However, the moment comes when your mind craves for something different; your palate demands something uniquely brave -- fresh salt water variety of muscles, langostini, clams, and other gifts of the Ligurian sea. Where can one find a great 'pesce povero' Ligurian-style restaurant in the landlocked township of Lucca? Search no more. There is only one -- L'anciüa [phonetically L'Anchuua]. The place is owned and carefully attended by the brave crew of ladies - Susanna [the owner], Eleanora [her daughter], and Arianna [the waiter]. Translating 'pesce povero' from Italian will leave you perplexed. The literal meaning of 'fish of poor' is playfully deceiving. L'Anciua presents a very different angle of sensory & visuals [see photos] in a designed simplicity -- modest in execution, rich by concept, with modern twist of the meaning to a 'fisherman dinner'. To that point, do not expect opulence in the environment. L'Anciua offers demure yet tastefully appointed ambiance, resembling the colors of Ligurian fishermans' houses [from colors of placemats, to raffia chairs, to the walls of azure and deep blue hues]. Yes, L'Anciua serves dinners tirelessly 19:45-23:00, with Monday closure. Yes, Susanna or Eleanora will great you at the door and suggest one of the three famous menus, non-tourist fixed price with water/wine/gelato-sorbet. Menus are adjusted to what they've received fresh from Liguria, but you'd never be disappointed by the integrity of the owner and the chef. Yes, you need to pace yourself with 'scarpetta' [soaking wonderful sauces by a piece of an artisanal bread], served generously by the basket. Yes, save your appetite for three types of desserts and digestivo. Yes, the place is very small, two dining rooms; hence, you are advised to call in advance to reserve your table for the romantic-two or a friends-of-four. Yes, wine is served by carafe of 0.5 or 1. Litter. Take your time, enjoy hospitality, delectable food, and just close your eyes to immerse into Ligurian cuisine. Thanks for reading thus far. I decided not to mention the menu items but trust me it is wonderful one and all - look at the photos attached. Picture says 1000s words! p.s. I am rarely on Yelp, busy traveling the world; however, when I am so loquacious about one Italian 'ristorante', it would only mean - the place is a gem to pry out of its shell! We've been in L'Anciua 6 times now [since their opening in 2015], wife and I, or with friends. Never disappointed, Always intrigued to discover what Susanna has to offer!

It's a fixed-price menu with options ranging from 15 to 30 euros per person, with combinations to choose from containing seafood appetizers, pasta dishes, and fried anchovies. Water, wine, dessert, coffee and a liqueur are all included. The price is crazy inexpensive for what you are getting; I think it is because by keeping the menu very limited they keep their costs down. The decor is charming and the place generally has a very nice feel. It's a place to go if you like seafood and you like having a really good cook bring you whatever she thinks will be great. If you are not very adventurous then you might not like it. The woman who runs the restaurant is extremely charming. if you go on a weeknight the pace will be slow and you can interact with her. On a weekend you must have a reservation, and you must go to either the 7:45 or 9:30 seating. The place will be very busy and you will get a good look at how it operates, which is pretty interesting. But you won't be able to interact with the owner and that is too bad. Our waitress was kind of the opposite of her - just trying to get her job done and nothing else. We went twice and we loved everything. The pasta dishes are excellent but filling. One time we both ordered the 20-euro menu, which came with four appetizers and a pasta dish for each of us. The other time we ordered one 20-euro menu and one 30-euro menu, which meant that we also had a plate of fried anchovies in addition to the two plates of pasta. I don't normally like fried fish - in fact it's normally about the least appetizing thing I can imagine. But it turns out that fresh anchovies, lightly coated in flour and then fried, are amazing. If I were going back again, I think I would go for two 20-euro menus and have pasta with one of them and fried anchovies in the other. (Since they are fresh they aren't at all salty like what you would get in a can in the US.)

We arrived slightly early and were joyfully greeted by our host (possible owner?). He let us choose where we wanted to sit, and were happy to accommodate us wanting to sit outside. He and his female coworker went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, giving recommendations for food and wine, sharing the history of the town, even found a brochure of an artist whose piece we were admiring in the restaurant. The food and wine were delicious. We shared a cacio e pepe croquette-type appetizer with prosciutto and fig jam. So unique and delicious. We then had their gnocchi with pesto of the day-today being a black cabbage pesto, and wild boar ragu pappardelle. Again, both delicious. We finished with their tiramisu which was hands down my favorite since being in multiple areas of Italy for 2 weeks. All of the food was so fresh, unique, and extremely well priced. Along with the delicious meal, the kindness and engagement of the staff puts this restaurant above the rest. When I return to Italy this will be a priority stop for sure.
