I found Il Regolo rated #1 on TripAdvisor, but couldn't find it on Google or Google Maps. We saw how highly rated it was on TripAdvisor and headed down the beach to check it out based on viewing their website pictures and the satellite pic on Google Maps. Boy are we glad we went to the trouble. Their website says they are open 09:30am-11:30pm, but they do close during the siesta - opening for dinner at 9:00pm. We spoke to the owner at 8:15pm about dinner and were told to come back at 9:00pm and they would have a table for six waiting for us. When we came back, they had a beautiful inside table overlooking the beach saved and our waiter immediately welcomed us and got us started on a Sardinian red by the bottle - it was delicious and we eventually ordered two more. He recommended a seafood appetizer, but we were all interested in cured meat and formaggia. On his suggestion, we accepted a selection of local ingredients and received two surfboard-sized platters of meats, cheeses, olives and fruit sauces as garnish. It was all ludicrously good. I was the only one of us to order primi piatti and had a grilled octopus and potato plate that was very good. Our secondi piatti selections were three grilled pork entrees, two gnocci and sausage entrees and one spicy rigatoni entree. Each were so good that we were pushing samples on each other saying "you HAVE to try this". One of our group that isn't a wine drinker was ordering Gray Goose vodka and tonics that came in heavy American pours with a ton of ice - which got nods of admiration from all of us. I saw how good they looked and had one as a nightcap. We were all incredibly satisfied with our meals and didn't think we left enough room for dessert, but our waiter brought out - unannounced - a ricotta cheese and honey desert for the table. The bill was not cheap, but was an incredible value for the experience we had. I can't rave enough how awesome this meal and our total experience at Il Regolo was. I don't give five-star reviews. I give Il Regolo five stars. It really was that good. We are definitely going back before we leave this weekend.

On a map, Porto Rotondo said it was about 40-45 mins from Porto Cervo where we stayed but it was really a quick and beautiful 20-25 minute drive. Don't be dissuaded - it's worth the drive from anywhere in Costa Smeralda.

Dinner #1: Complimentary ANTIPASTI MISTO SALUMI E FORMAGGI (platter of local cured meats, cheeses and bread). All the fish and seafood dishes were fresh and cooked to perfection. SPAGHETTI ALLE VONGOLE (spaghetti w/ sweet little clams); FRITTO MISTO CALAMARI E GAMBERI (calamari & prawns deep fried in light batter); PESCE ALLE GRIGLIA (grilled catch of the day). Meal ended with a delicious Sardinian dolce called SEADAS, a crisp airy pastry filled with sweet soft cheese and drizzled with golden Sardinian honey. A perfect end to the meal and worth ordering even if you're so full you swear you couldn't eat another bite. You can. I promise. Dinner #2: Fresh caught SPIDER CRAB 2 ways, first course was a simple yet divine crab broth with crab roe and fregola (small pasta similar to couscous) followed by the main course of fresh whole crab. The pure white crab meat was sweet and soft like a salty sea mascarpone cream. As delicious as it was I could have just eaten a whole pot of the crab soup and died happy. Gloriously happy. Dinner #3: MAIALINO ARROSTO (roasted suckling pig). This was the single most delicious meal of pork I have ever tasted in my entire life. Salty-crisp skin that shatters between your teeth like glass and rich, moist, tender meat that melts like butter. The suckling pig we ate that night fulfilled its life's purpose when it arrived in maestro Lino's kitchen. I cannot over-emphasize how perfect a meal it was, accompanied only by a platter of mixed grilled vegetables. If you eat only 1 meal in Sardegna, let it be the maialino arrosto at Lino's trattoria!!! Dinner #4: TRUFFLES!! Meal began with ANTIPASTI MISTO (heirloom tomato dressed in olive oil and aged red wine vinegar, assorted cheeses, olives, bread). 1st course was room temp POACHED EGGS with gloriously runny golden yolks and grated *black* truffles. 2nd course was warm poached eggs with grated *white* truffles. Most decadent poached eggs of my life. 3rd course was al dente TAGLIATELLE tossed in olive oil, butter, and more grated truffles! The simple pasta seasoned to taste with salt & fresh ground black pepper was a perfect showcase for the rich, earthy flavour of Sardinian truffles from Laconi City. Just when I thought I couldn't eat another bite, Lino placed a 4th dish on the table: BRAISED BABY GOAT RIBS.... with shaved truffles! Not only do I adore goat, but this was the most tender, succulent goat meat I've ever tasted. The ribs were plated in a pool of bright red-orange drippings which initially made me a bit apprehensive. By the end, I was using the last crusts of bread to soak up the glorious fat drippings and savour just one last bite before surrendering defeat. We finished our last meal with espressos and an ice cold shot of MIRTO before rolling ourselves up the hill to bed. Not only is the food delicious but Lino and Marlitha make guests feel as warm and welcome as family. Even their adorable dog Daisy filled the empty spot under the table where our own pups usually sit. Despite speaking limited Italian, we were honoured to share a glass of wine with our hosts and enjoyed several animated evenings of conversation, proving that excellent food can bridge language, culture, and country. Here you will be able to enjoy GF pasta, pizza and bread! (If you mention that you will be needing GF when booking your table, the restaurant will be able to offer even more alternatives on the menu.) After having mentioned that I needed GF food the manager made sure that I got a pasta that was both GF and fodmap adjusted. What I received was a pasta cooked to perfection, placed inside a big bowl made of parmesan! I have honestly not had anything come close to this pasta dish before or after! The rest of my company had fish and pasta (non GF) and they were also amazed over the quality of the food they got. We did not have any room left for desserts, but did have their own brewed limoncello and grappa which both were real good. If you are to visit only one restaurant in Santa Teresa di Gallura as GF - make sure that it is this one or you will have missed out on some seriously good food!
