The drinks menu featured kiwi inspired cocktails, beer(bottled and on tap), cider and wine. The cocktails were a little hit and miss. The dinner menu contained meals inpired by ingredients sourced from New Zealand and Australia. We decided to order the prix fixe 2 courses for $35 or include dessert for $45 which was great value. I also liked the sound of the kina and prawn arancini with kataia fire mayo. Kina being Maori for sea urchin. This was a tasty morsel, with a crisp fried outer crust with a tasty risotto filling with nice flavour and the chilli mayo to add a bit of a spicy kick. For our entree we shared the cuttlefish as well as the king fish sashimi with tomatillo. I was happy to see that they had cuttlefish on the menu, although similar to squid and octopus. I prefer cuttlefish especially if it is well prepared. The cuttlefish in this instance was well prepared. It was tender with delicate flavour. The chilli, garlic, lime dressing and squid ink mayo enhanced the flavour. A great starter and share plate. The king fish was also a good option, nice and fresh. As this was a cold winter night we both decided on the slow cooked meat options for our mains, to help warm us up. I had the venison stew with corn bread to mop up the sauce. This was a hearty meal with rich flavour. The kiwis like their lamb nice and tender and that is how it was delivered. This was absolutely delicious, it was literally melt un your mouth. 16 hours slow cooked lamb shoulder served witb carrot and brussel sprouts. Up there with the best lamb dishes we have eaten. We also shared the jelly tip with white chocolate mousse. A nice way to finish the meal, light fluffy white chocolate mousse filled with jelly. Good food, in a relaxed casual evironment and for a reasonable price. Make sure you book, as this place is popular. Service is incredibly fast, which I love!

The cuttlefish was so amazingly tender and flavourful. The duck fell apart at the touch of your fork and the beans underneath was so full of flavour. As for the salads at lunch time it's a similar situation-- pick your base (selection of lettuces or you can opt for a mix of salad/quinoa for a bit extra) and then up to 7 mix-ins. The salads start at $9 and there are plenty of protein options (egg, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans etc) if you don't want to pay for meat or haloumi as an add-on. Maybe Lisa just caught them on a bad day but I find them to be efficient and friendly each time I go, and I feel like the ingredients are fresh and high quality. Definitely a great bang for the buck and a super healthy option for breakfast/lunch (or dinner if you opt to get an extra salad to take home with you....shhhh, don't tell anyone).

Today as I wandered aimlessly through the Met Centre feeling uninspired by my normal lunch choices I decided it was time to try the Italian hamburger for myself. Given that there is no private seating and the Met Centre has many places where you can get a burger, chips and drink for $10 or less, I approached the counter with high expectations and was disappointed from whoa to go..... Firstly the service was poor. I was greeted by a girl who was eating while serving me. On its own not too bad, but when she stopped giving me my change to join in the conversation between three of her team mates I was unimpressed. I was only handed my money when one of her team mates intervened and suggested she finish serving me. After such poor service I was sure the burger would be fantastic to justify the price......I was wrong! The burger wasn't horrible....the meat was well cooked and the bun was okay, but here's the problem: when I pay $12 for a take away burger from a food court I expect more than a lump of beef with one piece of cheese and some tomato sauce, and that was all I got. In short, I paid $12 for a beef paddy, a slice of tasty cheese, a hamburger bun and some sauce......and for all that I didn't even get good service to offset the cost. Given the number of high quality take aways in Met Centre and around Wynyard Station I can't see the value in Janus, so I will give it a wide berth.
