We watched her at a table of locals next to us and she was chatty and smiling. Constantly at there table checking in. I was brought here by a friend who promised me to taste food from his native Auvergne. Since the region is known for its cattle and mountains, the food is very heavy. Since I knew what was coming, I started with a salad. It was simple with tomatoes, eggs and lettuce. It prepared me for the main course. I ordered the sausage and trouffades. Disappointing dinner last night for my party of eight people. Maybe it's unfair to compare my ribeye to Ruth's Chris or maybe I just caught them on an off night. I had the 500g Rib Steak with Aligot (mashed potatoes with melted cheese and garlic). The steak was huge but it was almost a quarter of fat, I ordered medium rare but it came out closer to rare and it was under seasoned. The Aligot was okay, same thing just lacking flavor. We came here based on Yelp reviews and were looking to try our some aligot. They do have a large outside area, but we opted for a table inside instead. Our server was very friendly, spoke fluent English and recommended delicious local wine. We were a table of three but ordered a starter and two entrees to share. We began with the onion soup, which was the best that we had during our stay in Paris. The portion size was HUGE and only 8€. It was loaded with cheese, crusty bread, perfectly soft caramelized onions, and needed no additional seasonings. As our entrees, we ordered the sausage and beef steak, one with aligot and the other with truffade. They were huge entrees and our server presented them to us on three plates instead of two which was great. The aligot needed salt or a sharper cheese, but we did enjoy it. I definitely recommend the truffade over the aligot! The steak was cooked to a nice medium rare and the sausage was delicious. Overall, very good experience with large portions and friendly service. Expect large pieces of duck, steak, sausage, other meats, and potatoes or fries. All food was under seasoned and under cooked. 2 of the dishes were inedible because they were so rare. Tourist trap. Insider food featured the aligot (melty garlicky mashed potato and cheese dish) which was average at best and was served as a giant helping as a side to your choice of meat dish. However, that was the only thing it did okay. Our table ordered the following: duck breast (served severely undercooked - I enjoy a good medium rare duck breast but not when it's almost blue (and cold) in the middle. Hanger steak requested medium (was both over and undercooked due to the uneven "cut" of steak. The regular steak (entrcote?) was requested medium rare and was severely overcooked (cut was too thin so it was easily medium well instead of rare) Duck confit was overcooked but the skin was not roasted well (rubbery skin). Also ordered the roasted potato and cheese (also okay and a giant helping) and pomme frites (soggy and limp). We really wanted to enjoy this meal despite the host sending us upstairs (downstairs dining area was barely filled when we got there at 7:30pm) and despite seating us in a booth next to the furnace, and the server having a basic level of understanding of English. We tried to order in French (but when in doubt? Pointed to the menus for our order). But at the end of the meal we probably only finished 25% of our meal despite being famished from our trek here. At minimally 20+ euro price per order, I felt like it was overpriced and also a waste of a perfectly okay piece of meat. We didn't have high expectations at all and showed up famished and it was STILL a huge disappointment. We were warned that food in Paris was generally a hit or miss. And for us, it was a huge miss. (Sorry - I hate to leave bad reviews but I would never recommend this place). If you want to try the aligot bc you saw the feature they did in insider food, just get that. After trying to eat at Pain Vin Fromages (in the 4th arrondissement) and being told that the wait would be 2-3 hours at around 7 p.m., we decided that we had to go somewhere else. AT and I had a mélange of friends in our midst, some mine and some his and none knew one another. In addition, one of my friends actually had her cousin tagging along, whom I didn't know. So it was kind of interesting to think how we would all interact. To set the backdrop of how the night unfolded, mostly at Le Plomb du Cantal, I have share with you how things started out. It was a lovely Saturday afternoon and AT and I got to see and patronize the famed bookstore, Shakespeare & Company. We bought about 8 books, lots that were either quite hefty in page count and/or hardcover. It was a bulky and weighty bundle we had to carry about (in 2 bags) and truthfully, it was a total nonissue as we explored the Notre Dame afterwards and walked over to the 4th arr. to get dinner after walking around Île de la Cité (the island in the Seine River) to kill time and find Bertillon ice cream (which I lucked out in doing). We were pretty hungry but as we got closer, AT's good friend texted to tell us about the lengthy wait to be seated so we decided to hang around so that my friend's cousin could meet us there then we left. It had started to rain. Remember that we had books with us? Eight of them. Yeah, I started to panic ever so slightly, with my agitation level increasing with every drop of precipitation and every step in a direction that I was not informed of. I had no idea where we were going and only had the reassurance from AT's friend's girlfriend that it was a quick walk from where we were. Well, it is now clear that French people walk a lot because even for someone who isn't a full-time couch potato, I thought the walk was substantial. Maybe it was because it was raining and I normally don't like being outside in the rain (because I probably have arthritic joints and get all achy when it rains, which means I can never be that careful girl who tosses her rain-drenched hair about in pure bliss). But add in that I have beloved books made of paper that gets ruined by moisture from an amazing bookstore with cool stamps inside and the walk was seemingly endless. (Uh, I'm ashamed because out of curiosity, I just checked Google Maps and the walk was about 3/4 mile. Shut up. It was raining and I had books. I repeat, I had books.) Let's say I was in a pretty sour mood once we made it inside. It was warm and we got seated right away, which was a welcome relief indeed. We got walked upstairs by the hostess and got placed in a huge booth. Nice, especially for our party of 7. We all removed our wet coats and scarves to hang them to dry, got cozy, and checked out the menu. Apparently, this place is known for aligot and truffard, which are both cheesy, garlicky potato dishes--with the former more of a mashed potato and the latter more akin to the potato au gratin with the cheese level notched up 10 levels) so we all knew that we'd go for some protein with one of the two. My problem is with the server. What a b**ch. Seriously, for her sake, I hope she was dealing with something unpleasant (like maybe her period, for example?) and had that crappy attitude as a result. If she is like that all the time, one day, she is going to get slapped in her face. She was very short with our party, especially because she noticed that not everyone was French nor were we all fluent in the language. This wasn't so much a problem for me, because I had AT communicate on my behalf, but my friend and her boyfriend do not speak a lick of the language and asked questions in English. This must have peeved her immensely and service went downhill steadily the whole time we were there. The food took a very long time to come out. Once it did, it was truly excellent. I got some type of sausage and the serving of truffard (which is what we all decided on) was beyond generous. I mean, holy moly. Larger potato portions than you would probably get anywhere in the U.S. as a normal side. The truffard was cheesy and decadent and it warmed up our bodies after our 20-minute trek in the rain. When we left and paid with a mixture of food vouchers (that employers give to employees to subsidize their meals), paper bills, and coins, we encountered another problem. The server actually demanded that additional money be paid because she did not want to count out the coins. What the flying f**k?! Yeah... We were all pretty annoyed and tired by this time and while AT tried to argue with her, his friend calmed him down and told him to just give her a Euro or two so we could all go. So while the food easily gets 4 to 4.5 stars, the service was 2 stars. Maybe if you go with a party that consists of everyone able to speak French, you may have a better experience. I'll warn my fellow Americans that the cheese in the aligot is overwhelming... it's not the mild cheese I was used to but I still really enjoyed it! It was very crowded when we went but were able to be seated fairly quickly. My only reason for the four star review is that the wait staff was a bit short and, in my opinion, rude. Go to this place hungry, People! Famished, I tell you! The aligot and truffade were both new experiences. Based on previous yelp reviews on this place, we can't say we weren't forewarned, but oh my... maybe a dozen forkfuls of the aligot was all we could muster and not have that loaded-gut feeling the rest of the night. We did note that a two-top gets the same portion of aligot as a four-top... maybe it's better to share as a group? We really did enjoy the place and the experience, the food was better than OK, and our server was a very sweet and helpful young person. It seems to be a very good option for those traveling on a budget (i.e., big caloric bang-for-the-buck) & having the facility to warm leftovers later. Very rude servers. The meat was rubbery and tough. It was quite difficult to get anyone to wait the table. Rarely did a server come by. Yes - the place was packed. I was in Paris for a week. This was the best meal I ate. Specializes in Auvergne region food- it's a lot of meat and potatoes (I suggest walking to your next destination after dinner). A friend who lives in Paris suggested this place- and she was right it was amazing. We ordered entrecôte (a thin beef steak) with trouffade (potato and cheese dish) and fresh sausage and aligot (50% mashed potatoes and 50% cheese). They were both AMAZING. They meat was great (someone told us not to eat beef in France, they were wrong) and the potatoes made me want to sing. Trouffade was superior to aligot, but if there are two of you, order both. They serve them tableside and show you how stretchy the aligot is. So fun! We also had dessert. I consider myself an expert on creme brûlée. I had the creme brûlée here and was nervous my first Parisenne creme brûlée wouldn't be good. I was excited- this was the BEST creme brûlée I've eaten.
