He got our drinks wrong, and there was added non-existence drinks on our bill later and since he doesnt speak English, it was odd to verify. Weird! (maybe I'm too sensitive about places being tourist traps?) Menu are quite expensive, overall not bad. - White Asparagus - pretty good but simple, 28 euro still steep for 6 pieces. - Cauliflower Soup - really good, silly foamy texture with ample flavor. - Escargot - good as well, cute way of serving. - Cassoulet - didnt like it at all, for the $$$$ it's a huge bowl of white beans, with a piece of sausage, a piece of pork meat, a piece of duck meat, a piece of lamb, a piece of something meat inside. Delightful restaurant in Montparnasse. Greeted by the owner? at the door. Knowing that we spoke next to no French, he explained the menu in English patiently. Although there is a cheaper menu of the day, It didnt' have what I wanted the cassoulet. it comes in a giant pot with bubbling beans, sausage, bacon and duck. Delicious. However, it's so big, it really should be a shared dish between 2-3 people. However, I saw a quite a few people trying to tackle it alone, like I tried. Good service and good food. This cafe was a perfect stop during our day trip in Paris. Our schedule allowed for odd eating times so we found it challenging to find any restaurant open for dining at the time we sought after without reservations long in advance. The food was good, hearty, flavorful. The view was quaint and the decor was eclectic. YesI am an American..but I do live in the heart of the wine country in Napa. Here is my review..the food was good..creme brûlée just perfect! BUT: The sommelier was arrogant..we had 3 sets of wine glasses that were musty. When I " glazed " my wine glass the somm wanted to kick us out. The owner had to come over and intercede. We were rushed, our entree plates sat for 45 minutes in empty in front of us as some sort of protest. I do not like pretension and arrogance and especially being rushed after makginger a reservation 4 months ago for a very special last night in Paris. Save yourself the aggregation! Truly an authentic French restaurant- small, quaint, and felt like a locals type of place (not touristy!). Everything we had was absolutely exquisite in taste and presentation. Let me start with the food to be fair. The one thing that was great was the bread with butter and ham to start. Very yummy. Also the sea bream with risotto was tasty and the dessert was delicious. Definitely the crème caramel pot was best. The soup and other appetizers were just fair not great and all in all the food itself was nice but nothing to write home about. We were extremely excited to try this restaurant. We had reservations far in advance and planned a celebratory meal here. When we asked for an English menu, we received an extremely rushed and bitter rough translation of the menu. When we tried to ask questions, the senior waiter literally walked away from us. This had us burst out laughing because, as we have been enjoying our vacation, we decided to take the shockingly rude behavior from the waiter as "just the French." It got much worse. After repeated attempts to clarify menu items and ask about a vegetarian option, we failed miserably and ended up nervously rattling off a few items. He even checked in on us again, and then when we began to ask another menu question, actually walked away from us in frustration and again refused to answer our questions. We started drinking and trying to enjoy our time, but again we had to laugh so as not to feel completely shocked and disheartened. Near the end of our meal, one of the members of our party found a short black hair in her soup. It was very obviously from the cowlick of the waiter who poured the soup in front of us into the bowl. We laughed again, how ironic this snotty restaurant gave us a hair in their soup, and she decided to tell them thinking they would maybe finally feel some shame or at least show some kindness toward us. They accused us of being liars and that it was our own hair. As we left the restaurant, the head waiter told us we were "loud, rude and disrespectful" and to "go back to trump." While I'll admit we laughed loudly several times, they were certainly the ones who were rude and disrespectful. It's hard not to feel that if we were a group of loud businessmen that maybe they would not have cared. But they really hated us from the start. Save yourself some time and your money! This place isn't exactly cheap and we were berated. read more

Thank you L'Assiette for one of the 3 best meals I've had in my life. This place is incredibly unsuspecting, as there's nothing new and/or trendy about it. There are only about 18 seats in the small dining area. And it's not in any of the "cool" or "hipster" districts around Paris. But please don't let that stop you from coming and experiencing what a meal should 100% be about. The service is some of the friendliest I've ever received, but the food is what dreams are made of. We got the Tartare De Crevettes Bleus (Shrimp Tartare), the Braised Octopus and Clams, the Sausage and White Bean Cassoulet, and the Caramel Pudding for dessert. All of this was paired with a great bottle of wine, and it cost us significantly less than it would anywhere else. This place is the epitome of a GEM, and I'd confidently say it's an old-school dining experience from Heaven. read more

Just back from over a month in Paris, a chilly place in March. Like many tourists, I favor traditional bistro food while in Paris. Fashion Week wave was passing through so I reserved for a late lunch, just before it closed for the break. Ordered the cassoulet maison and a yummy glass of red wine (recommended by the server). The cassoulet is the best I've had: crisp top, with a couple of lightly charged crisps slices on top, creamy beans that I ate one-by-one as I worked through the large serving. Tasty chunks of pork and sausage tucked in the stew of beans and small bites of meat. So good. I was alone so it took some time to finish, and I didn't quite, but was congratulated in the best way by the staff when one asked if I was French! Go, relax, and enjoy the real deal. read more

Just simply amazing. As an American traveling to Paris, I knew i'd find a great restaurants at every street corner, so for 5 nights in Paris, how do I determine where to eat? I decided to look up my favorite French dishes and find out the restaurant that does the best job. L'assiette was rated the top cassoulet in the city, so I had to go. Upon walking through the door, we saw a large ham. Each table was served baguette, butter, and thin slices of the salty, delicious ham. My wife is a quasi-vegetarian, so I was able to have all of the ham to myself. I wanted to save room for the best cassoulet in Paris. I told the waiter right away what I had come for and he had the kitchen throw one in the oven right away since they make each to order. I was served a huge crock filled with tender white beans that permeated the smell of smoky, fatty meat. The cassolut had two different types of sausage, pork belly, pork ribs, and a whole duck leg. It was amazing. So good to the point that my quasi vegetarian wife started having some of the beans, because it was simply that good. Well done. We decided to cap off the night with crème caramel, which was a delightful way to end a delicious meal. Perfectly cooked custard, rich and creamy, and the caramel gave it a sweet and luscious finish. Definitely a meal that I had to walk off after dinner, but well worth it. Great service, great food! read more

Really very good. I had a dish with lamb and it was delicous. Unfortunately we came the day before the restaurant was to close for summer vacation, and therefore they did not have the cassoulet, which we came all the way to try. :( So disappointing. Hubs accidentally ordered head of veal including the brain - the cheek was very tasty, the rest okay, the sauce perfect for the dish, but he could not bring himself to eat the brain (because he studies biology and medicine and is aware of the health risk). Maybe it would have been tasty though! Recommended, but if you are looking to try a specific dish, best to call ahead and ask them if they will be serving it that day. read more

Great French food that is a good mix of traditional flare and more modern twists. It's one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. The team there is really friendly, the wine choices are good, and every dish we had was very tasteful. It's not cheap though. (The chef used to work at Alain Ducasse). With three courses plus a carafe of wine and one coupe de champagne for the two of us, the price tag came to around €150. I will definitely go back though. read more

Paris has some real good food but I think this place stands out as some of the best we've had during our trip. Your started with french bread (ah duh :) and freshly sliced ham. The escargot was good....but the main meal was the star. The cassoulet was amazing. It wasn't just put together - it was masterfully created. The depth of flavors were a delight on the palette. We were going to order the salami appetizer earlier but the owner was nice enough to not do so as it would be too much food. You have to appreciate it when he wants the customer to enjoy their overall meal instead of upsell items. Dessert was a crème brulee....I'm not crazy about crème brulee but this was awesome. Best caramel I've ever had. For the wine selection we stayed with the house wine, more than adequate. I would definitely recommend a visit here. read more

American, non-French speaking in Paris for first time, wanted to have exceptional dinner but didn't want to be on edge about not knowing protocol of formal dining in France. Getting reservation online was easy a day ahead of time. The room was intimate, busy, and lively with mix of young and old Parisians - you are not going to stand out here as a neophyte. When the Maître de quickly figured out our French was very limited, he translated every item on the menu for us without prompting. The food was jaw-droppingly good. I guess I'm sort of a foodie, not a "I know everything about French cuisine" foodie, but have worked and eaten in many, many restaurants and I've never eaten better food than we ate at L'Assiette. There were two clearly well-heeled older couples dining at a table next to us - the chef (who apparently was something of a sensation when he came on the scene a few years ago) seemed to know them well. He was talking to them as we got up to leave and stopped to shake our hands and ask us about our meal on the way out - it was really cool. Was looking for that dynamite authentic experience that we could not have gotten state-side that this was it. All in all, the food was other-worldly and the waiter and Maître de were exceptionally welcoming and quickly dispelled any anxieties I had about eating at a nice Parisian restaurant.
