    Tarte bourdaloue
    JJ C.

Atmosphere: Le Village Monge is conveniently located next to the Censier-Daubenton metro station. We sat outdoors by the street under an awning. Service: Our waitress, who spoke English, was friendly and helpful as she helped explain some pastries we were unfamiliar with. Food: We ordered a tarte bourdaloue, a French pear tart. The tart probably would've tasted better if served hotter, but it was only slightly warm and quickly got cold. To add, the tart was light but not very flavorful. We also ordered a decaf espresso, which was good to sip on. Overall: La Village Monge was a restaurant we visited on a whim due to its location by a metro station. While the tarte bourdaloue wasn't bad, it also did not impress us either, especially since it was served rather lukewarm. La Village Monge would be a good place to go for a casual cup of coffee and to catch up with friends.

This is the note that the waitress gave me explaining the coffee lingo in Paris.

We tried this based on the review and the proximity to our Air B&B. The service was great. The service was perfectly timed. Neither too slow or too fast. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. The menu is fully translated. I ordered the escargot (€9) and my partner order the baked Camembert (€9) for starters. I had vodka and cranberry juice as an aperitif. I got a crystal tumbler with three fingers of vodka and a carafe of cranberry juice. (€6). I made 3 decent drinks with it. For our main course I had the honey sesame chicken brochette (€16) with quinoa risotto. Both the sauce for the chicken and the quinoa were inspired. My partner had the skirt steak with frites (€18) it was perfectly cooked (rare - a pointe) The presentation was beautiful! We were enticed by the steak tartare. It comes with a choice of 4 flavour combinations, but we chickened our in the end. The dessert menu looked enticing as well with homemade gelato but we were too full and content to eat more. The location is right on the corner of a busy intersection. We ate on the patio and enjoyed all the great architecture and interesting characters Paris has to offer. Pretty much a dream date night. We went back for breakfast a couple days after the dinner date. Our daughter wanted crepes and we needed to be on the road by 10. This place opens at 8 am. Crepes aren't exactly on the menu but our lovely waitress Marie had the chef make them for us we also got beautiful fruit cups. Marie was very interested in our well being and explained the different coffee lingo so we wouldn't get ripped off in other restaurants. She also recommended the Klimt exhibit at the attelier de luminieres. It was excellent.

    Snails in a garlic sauce

We were exploring the Latin district and stumbled upon this restaurant. The prices were reasonable and they had an English menu, which was good for us. My husband started with the escargot dish and all the snails were in a strong garlic sauce. He enjoyed the experience. I wasn't brave enough to try them. He says he doesn't know enough about snails to say if they were good quality or not. I ordered homemade lasagna for my meal and he ordered salmon on ratatouille. Both dishes were substantial and tasty. My lasagna had a hint of cinnamon which seemed a bit odd, but it was delicious. The restaurant has lots of bistro tables on the sidewalk for people watching. If you are in the area, stop by and try it out!

Go here and eat duck in honor of Dr. Geffard. (All The Light We Cannot See) It is a lovely brasserie and I recommend it on its merits alone even if you don't love the book.

Visited twice during a weekend in Paris with my daughter. Firstly, the Monge neighborhood where the restaurant is located is very nice and safe. We stumbled upon it our first night, as it was ten minute walking distance to our hotel. The waiter, Menge, was very welcoming and his English was good enough to carry us since we speak like 5 words of French. We each started with the French Onion soup. They were huge and soooo comforting after a long travel day. I tried their chicken skewers which was served with quinoa. My daughter had their homemade lasagne which was to die for. I had a red wine and my daughter had a Nutella crepe for dessert which she said was the best crepe she'd ever had. On our second visit, our waiter's name was Ben. He remembered us from the couple nights before and was very warm and welcoming too. My daughter tried their farm chicken with mashed potatoes and I had the lasagne this time. My only nits about this place was that the first evening, the smell of cigarette smoke was a bit bothersome, especially for my daughter who has allergies. BUT, nearly every subsequent restaurant we went to also smelled of smoke...that's just Paris...they don't have non-smoking laws. We were pleased that there was no smoke smell during our second visit to Village Monge. Great little place with very nice, friendly staff and lots of comfort food style dishes to choose from!

The richness of the flavor and the texture which is not reminiscent of the traditional roasted duck or foie gras, but rather a much more like a luxurious and indulgent version. We enjoyed our dinner on the outside of the restaurant after about a 20-30 minute wait. The bone marrow had the best flavor I've experienced for the dish. However, it is definitely overshadowed by the rich flavor of the foie gras. This experience was unforgettable, with our view of Parisian streets on a brisk, April night. We even came back on our last night, but didn't realize the hours on Google maps was for the deli. The restaurant closes earlier, before 9:00 PM. This meal got us thinking about Paris in a positive light, and we hope to be able to come back to eat the amazing dishes again!

They had a number of goods to choose from and I ended up buying a few things for souvenirs. As for the actual restaurant, they had a number of delicious sounding items on their menu. Our server was very attentive to us and helped us decide on our dinner orders. Similar to the other restaurants though. After our food was delivered, it was far in between when we were checked on again. And after dessert it took even longer for our server to bring the bill. Overall, the food was a letdown. I do not exaggerate when I say that the frog legs just tasted like slightly flavored water. My friend's ravioli had a fairly decent flavored sauce but the pasta was a bit chewy. My friend's duck breast was pretty tough; I had noticed the table next to us also ordered it and they seemed to have trouble finishing/cutting theirs as well. As for my steak with foie gras, well the steak was once again tough and the foie gras was weirdly stringy. It was soft for the most part but there were parts that were tough and stringy. Maybe that's a section that's generally separated in the preparation process and it was missed? In any case it was disappointing. What wasn't disappointing was dessert though; perfectly sweet and balanced.

On the other hand, it made me realize that my mother was a terrible cook. Bistro des Augustins is a small, cozy venue offering both indoor seating and terrace seating near Pont Neuf. It serves a small number of curated dishes, including a wonderfully traditional Bistro Gratin in a homey ceramic dish served piping hot with a brown crispy cheesy top, herbs, spices and chicken. You can also get it with salmon. My brothers and I only saw my mother use our gas range to light her cigarettes, sanitize needles to remove our splinters, and make s'mores during the summer months when she couldn't muster the energy to take us 'outside camping.' I mean, all she had to do was borrow a cookbook, which I'm sure were readily available from maybe a neighbor or in any local bookstore or the public library. How hard is that? I was the only kid who brought a can of tuna and his own monogrammed can opener to school every day. Every day. And mom convinced me that the tuna holster she got me for my birthday was cool and hip. I was a naive mercury-filled fool, although I did become a very fast runner in junior high school because of the tuna holster. The interior décor of Bistro des Augustins is informal and vintage bistro style - wooden tables, traditional chalkboard menus, and soft lighting - creating a relaxed and comfy ambiance. My eyes have been opened to what's possible. Thank you Bistro des Augustins for expanding my culinary horizons. Five stars.

Didn't blow me away, but was solid with the creaminess of the sliced potatoes and emmental cheese combined together with mixed vegetables. The cheese was very strong though, so anything else was unfortunately pretty much overpowered by it. Arrived with bread, but it DEFINITELY could use other carb options to sop it all up (e.g., rice???)! = Landais - Cheese gratin with duck. Same comment as the above, except the Landais had egg and goat cheese also mixed in with almost the same ingredients as the Fermier. THE SERVICE ----------------------- + The lone waitress, who also worked the role as greeter, cashier and bartender was friendly. + Food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. Vibey 30 somethings and those of us tourists that have begrudgingly figured it out. It is close quarters inside, but when in Rome. My bestie from middle school and I shared the escargot (bless you) pasta, which was delicious, and the duck, which was exceptional. We split a very fairly priced bottle of wine and ended the night with the scoop of mousse. If they could figure out how to do that intravenously, that'd be great. The mousse reminded me of a great guilty pleasure, which is eating straight out of the can of Duncan Hines chocolate frosting (ask me how I know, I do this often, going to rebrand it to me being European). No real plans. Just walking. Cigarette smoke in the air, scooters passing narrow streets, old stone buildings glowing under soft afternoon light. Online, this place feels impossible to book. But show up 10-15 minutes before opening and suddenly you're seated like you knew the secret all along. Inside, the room hums. Tight tables. Warm walls. Loud enough to feel alive without becoming chaotic. Nobody rushing. Nobody flipping tables. Just the rhythm of Paris doing what it's always done. The menu is entirely in French which, honestly, makes the experience better. You stop ordering with certainty and start ordering with curiosity. My wife had the risotto d'épeautre aux St. Jacques. I ordered the Magret de Canard au Romarin. The duck was solid. A 3.5/5 kind of dish. Rich, savory, comforting after a long day walking through the city. But the risotto surprised me more. The scallops were delicate, the spelt added this earthy texture that made the dish feel substantial without ever becoming heavy. And then there's the mousse au chocolat. The famous one. Served from an oversized bowl with this almost excessive "all you can eat" energy that somehow still feels elegant instead of gimmicky. We only needed a few bites. Soft, luxurious, lightly bitter chocolate balanced perfectly against just enough sweetness. The kind of dessert that doesn't ask for attention. It quietly earns it.

Simple classic French cuisine. We shared the mini raviolis stuffed with mushroom and a foie gras sauce. Wow. And shared their famous beef bourguignon. The tender beef, the sauce! I love the way they plate it too. Delicious. And a bottle of Cabernet Franc from Bourgueil (Loire Valley). The second visit (3 star) was very different from the first visit. Less friendly, borderline rude, took a long while for table service even though it was not busy, rolled their eyes about us sharing and at our wine bottle selection. We didn't feel welcomed. Food remains good, but not outstanding. Roll of the dice on service. I'd say if you're in the area and you don't have to wait it'd be worthwhile, otherwise seek a less touristy spot.
