Gabe's the man. Great open Mat, great vibes. Very welcoming and fun. Great place for beginners and nice competition for higher belts.

Barum Jiu Jitsu - World Class Instruction and a Great Community!…read moreI cannot recommend Barum Jiu Jitsu highly enough! Training under Professor Alfredo Barum is an absolute privilege; his depth of knowledge and passion for the art are evident in every class, and the entire atmosphere at the academy is welcoming and professional. One of the highlights is having Professor Joe Kracht leading instruction. Knowing you're learning from a Master World Champion in both gi and no-gi is incredible, but what's even better is that Joe is a phenomenal teacher who can break down complex techniques and make them accessible to everyone, from beginner to advanced student. Whether you're looking to compete, learn self-defense, or just get in great shape, you'll find top-notch training here. The culture at Barum Jiu Jitsu is fantastic - everyone is there to learn and support each other, and it truly feels like a team. If you're in San Diego and thinking about starting Jiu Jitsu, or are a seasoned practitioner looking for high-level instruction, you owe it to yourself to check out Barum Jiu Jitsu! I'm proud to be part of this academy! (Included are photos from a recent IBJJF 2026 San Diego Summer Open).

Signing my son up to do Jiu-Jitsu here has been the best decision I made all year. I called around to different studios and spoke with numerous coaches, but no one gave me "all the feels" like the owners of Six Blades and that was just by the initial phone call. I initially spoke with Professor Gustavo and relayed some of the struggles my son was going through and how I thought Jiu-Jitsu would be a good fit to improve overall health and confidence. He gave me a little of his background and in just telling me his story, it felt so relatable to my son. Then I got to Six-Blades and met with Megan and was blown away. It felt like I had known her for years. No crazy sales pitch. She just shared their goals, and it was evident that the impact they want to make on children, and the community was authentic. You can tell these people really care about the sport and treat the people they are teaching like family. My son will say things like "Mom, I can tell ALL of the coaches here really care about me," and not only does he feel like the coaches care about him, but they foster such a healthy sense of community that he feels welcomed and included by all the other students. I'm so thankful to Gustavo and Megan and ALL of the coaches because I feel like my son's confidence is growing as well as his athleticism, discipline, resilience and overall attitude. THANK YOU SIX BLADES.

Classes are good but they nickel and dime every way they can. One day we forgot to pack the GB performance shirt they need to wear under the Gi but still had a black Nike shirt on underneath, and was told he can't step onto mat unless he had the GB shirt, so was forced to buy one. Then baseball season started and we had to pause the membership. Told we can't do it at location but needed to email. They will give you a three month pause but charge $25 each month, any additional months after that need to be "approved" or at least when I told them we needed to pause for another month the email response I got said "request approved". Lastly, our son decided he didn't want to go back as he wanted to do other things during the summer and so we asked to cancel. Apparently you need to give a 60 day notice of cancellation and will be charged in full for those two months, and membership pause also doesn't count towards 60-day notice policy. Talk about highway robbery. This is a gym membership not cancelling a lease. All these fees and gotchas are outlined in the contract but not fully explained when we signed up. So make sure you ask questions about the contract before jumping in and plan accordingly if you want to cancel.

PLEASE READ, THEN SIGN UP FOR A MEMBERSHIP!…read more I work in the mental health field and was looking for a Jiu-Jitsu gym that offered more than just training. I wanted a place that felt like a true wellness space where I could bring clients for Jiu-Jitsu, fitness, and recovery. This place exceeded all my expectations. The facility has everything you could ask for. Clean, spacious mats, restrooms and showers, lockers, a fully equipped gym, and recovery options like a cold plunge, infrared sauna, and professional massage chairs. Everything is very clean. You can tell right away, even by how fresh the place smells. One of the best parts is the location. If you are a surfer like me, it is within walking distance of Tourmaline Surf Park, which makes it perfect to train after a session in the water. Parking is also very easy. I usually find a spot within 30 to 60 seconds since it is in a residential area and quieter during the times I train. They offer a variety of classes for all levels, along with yoga and personal training. What really stands out though is the community. Everyone is welcoming, supportive, and easy to get along with. If you are thinking about checking it out, this is your sign. Come try it for yourself. You will not regret it.

They're all happy to see their students grow and be their best selves. -The place is very clean and full of professional and mature individuals who *mostly* take responsibility to clean to - which is truly saying something. - I have never been to a gym to welcoming and friendly. I usually just like to go in, do my thing, and get out. There are strong bonds formed here strengthened with every class we suffer through. Everyone has different goals and reasons for being there but we all support each others journey. Very much an "each one teach one" vibe. - also the Jocko supplements are actually really good. I hope to see more of that. The only thing I wish they had was a regular clock in the weight room and cross-fit room. I leave my watch at home when at the gym and I feel like I have to look at my phone every 5 min not wanting to miss class. Update: coming up in 2 years training with this gym. Even with a fire that took it down and a second location opened up within just a few months the management is still quite professional and the coaches are awesome. Looking forward to the old building opening back up.

On the day that we scheduled to come the sign in tablet was not finding our reservation. There was some confusion with the check-in as the tablet didn't recognize our name. Halfway through class we got pulled aside to sign a waiver at the front (just me). We also explained to them that we were contacted by someone and offered a free class. The class schedule is like a rotation. You get to hit the bags and move on to a bunch of core exercises. At the end of our class we had to "sign out". Which meant we had to talk to a rep at the front. I think they use that opportunity to sell us classes. It was kind of awkward because we were dead tired and I felt kind of put on the spot. I declined and the following 2 weeks after I received several voicemails of them wanting to offer me another free class. I don't think boxing is my thing personally, but I can see how this can be an effective HIT workout for those who would enjoy boxing. I would give this place a 3.5 round it up to a 4 because the instructor and employees were kind to us even though there was a miscommunication.
