I went there to pick up some much needed Spanish food. I was very specific when I placed my order. I order combo #1 with tostones and $3 worth of mojito. They neglected to tell me they ran out of mojito and covered it up by pouring a little over my chicken and didn't pour any into a container. I noticed the container was missing when I went home so I returned to the store. As soon as I walked in I felt I was being ignored by the staff and the original server avoided me. When someone finally approached me to ask what I wanted I asked her for $3 worth of mojito in a cup. She chuckled to herself and told me they didn't have enough. So then I asked her can I at least have 2 small cups and she replied," we don't have anymore that's why we put it on your chicken. That was not my intention, what about my tostones and my rice! When you go to any Dominican restaurant, you must drink either Country Club or Red Rock (my fave is red). Next, for some people, you must eat your meal before going to the gym, because your booty will grow grande. Now if you are a lady, you are allowed to go for seconds. I'm not sure if it set a record for most sneering, reluctant service of all time, but it did set one for least interesting salad of all time, with a 98.4% Iceberg Quotient. Those few cucumber slices were all that stood in the way of pure iceberg doom. And, yes, I'll take some of the blame for requesting salad here. Many locals coming here. There was too much work for the ladies here to get your order in fast. We mistakenly decided to sit down for table service, but learned that it would've been a LOT faster to wait in the cafeteria-style line, get food, sit and chow down, and get up and go. We got the oxtail stew with yellow rice, $10 (they gave us white rice but it would've taken forever to report the mistake and get it switched, so we sucked it up. It came with beans anyway. The meat was tender and the stew gravy is so savory), mofongo with roast pork, $6 (it was rather dry, and not riddled with as much lechon asada as I'd hoped. The gravy was the same as the one in the oxtail stew), and a papaya milkshake, $3 (very creamy). We asked for water, assuming they'd give us the iced tap in the pitchers right next to our table, but they gave us bottled instead. Rather than argue for what we wanted, we accepted whatever we got because we just wanted to finish fast and leave. The food was nice and hearty. Take this as a no-frills, self-seating lunch spot. Their lunch special (even on weekends!) is the epitome of a good deal. For $7-$8 you get 4 large scoops of rice (yellow or white), beans (black or pinto) and your choice of protein. Although the ratio's a little off in terms of carbs (lots of it) vs protein (3-4 moderate sizes of chicken), you do get what you pay for. The chicken was so juicily tender and the sauce on the rice was spot on. If I'm back next time, would definitely like to try the ox tail. Do I just sit myself down?? Do I order at the counter first?? Eek. So for you first-timers, sit yourself down and a server will make her way to you. If you're opting for carry-out, just order at the counter. After you get your check, take yourself to the counter to pay. Their staff is really nice and friendly. Anyway, I got my relleno first. It was huge! Very warm and tasty and not over-fried. It wasn't even all that greasy. Loved it! The mofongo took a while, but my server came by to check on me and let me know it would be coming up soon. It wasn't overpowered by garlic and the pollo was crispy and tasty. The portion was huge, so I only managed to work my way through half of it. Overall, I was pretty impressed by their menu offerings and it was a super cheap lunch. Fast friendly service, they all got a mix of meat, rice, beans, a lil yucca, stew, spaghetti (yes, next to their RICE & pepper steak) in top speed. They finish & male worker with the threaded eyebrows barely acknowledges me (& I'm pretty sure he's fluent in both languages). I semi-assertively my order for the Lechon Asada, yellow rice, beans, & ask if I can have a piece of yucca. But can I have it in a to-go tim because I probably won't finish it. "Sure no problem!" He tells me to take a seat. Waitress brings me (white) rice with the beans (not in a cup), & pernil with a giant chunk of skin covering it. Not in a tin. Lady come in and waits, she complains to me that they're so slow. Older man comes in & asks me why I haven't asked them for a container. I said I did twice.. I feel another person behind me. Finally young guy asks the lady what she wants, totally ignoring me. Counter woman asks whose next & was about to serve the older man until he's like, Pack her food! I point to the pernil/rice part & say only this, not the beans. She's shoving everything into little container (I carefully had segregated the drippy beans). I go to meet her at the register to pay but decided to open my package right there. Am not going home with bean soaked rice cuz I didn't ask for it! I tell her in Spanish that I only wanted the rice & pernil. Think she misunderstands me & makes a face, goes off to get beans. I leave $6 on the table & go to the garbage & dump out the beans part. Oh man, this Puerto Rican restaurant was hotly anticipated. It seems like it took them forever to finish switching over from the bakery that used to occupy the spot. And then on opening night it was jam-packed. Well it's been a while and the place is holding up quite nicely. They have a nice sit-down area with bright murals, and are well set up to do takeout. They also do the neighborhood's ubiquitous rice-beans-meat plate lunches, but I haven't tried that because the Combos are such a good deal. We always get one of their Combo specials, ranging from $15 for Combo #1: a whole rotisserie chicken (cut up), rice, beans, salad, 2-liter Coke, and either maduros or platanos, all the way up to $25 for other combinations of food, including chuletas (pork chops) and beef stew. The chuletas are by far my favorite, though I'm sure each one takes at least a week off my life... I think they are deep fried or something. So delicious. One time we got takeout and they forgot the beans. I called and the dude sounded sincerely devastated for me. "No beans? Oh my God... I'm sorry, Mami..." We agreed that I would come back the next day and ask for Moreno and get my beans. So I went, not to be petty but because a combo makes two meals for my husband and me and those beans were going to be really good with round 2. No problems getting the replacement beans. The food was delicious, the service is excellent, and the prices are amazingly low. Get the mofongo relleno de camarones as an appetizer, then follow it up with lechon, arroz con habichuelas and pasteles. Finish it off with flan and coffee, you won't be disappointed. There are three kinds of Puerto Rican restaurants in New York. On one end are the "nouveau latino" places that are trendy and chic and charge you an arm and a leg for food plus ambiance. If you want the ambiance or are on a first date go there. The second kind are the "pan latino" restaurants that make all kinds of food and serve dishes from all Central America and the Caribbean. These are great if you want enchiladas or arepas , but if you want a special PR dish like you won't find it. The third kind are the rare gems like Lechonera El Barrio that make you feel like you are in a "fonda" in PR where they serve all the typical dishes and have certain specialties. There are a few on Third Avenue in the low 100s which offer less seasoned and soggy fare. The famous roast chicken, Pio Pio in the 90s is expensive and overrated, and the only thing I really love about them now is the green Peruvian Huacayte sauce. Since it's a "lechonera," the suckling pig or lechon is the star dish here....and is deliciously yummy with crackling, crunchy, seasoned fatty skin! read more
