Wasted my money. How in the world could you have "beef" swimming in its juices and it's still DRY? I almost choked on the peppered steak today. It sure why but you can see in my picture... there was enough broth poured on top of it and still was dry as a desert. The beef was tough 9/10 of the time. Wouldn't recommend the peppered steak(not sure why but seasoning wasn't doing much. Didn't even taste black pepper. The beef with bone is different. It wasn't this dry the other day. read more

I live in the neighborhood 3 blocks away and always get the pernil rice and beans large, typically no more than $14. I ordered rice and beans and she gave me 2 scoops and then took the back of the spoon to spread it across the pan. I asked her for another scoop and she got mad and took some rice out my pan shouted at me that all i'm going to get now and then started speaking in spanish to the other server. I told her never mind and walked out. Not only me but quite a few black people I know who have patronized that establishment stated they treat blacks with meal portions much smaller and worse than they do their spanish speaking customers. the food here is really good. flavored well, savory, and filling. also very cheap. i got pollo guisado (stewed chicken) with rice and beans for $9. my only issue was that there was a lot of rice and not enough beans but that's fine. it's funny reading all the reviews by the white people moving into the area. they complain that the workers here are rude but these gentrifiers probably don't know what they're ordering and then leave a bad review for no reason. it's not that hard to look up the menu items on google and figure out what you want beforehand so you're not holding up the line asking a million questions. the service is great as long as you're not wasting time for no reason. there's also an area to eat if you want to dine in. read more

This is my go to spot in Harlem when I'm in the mood for authentic Dominican food. Everything is delicious, the customer service is great, lots of options and I love that the majority of the food they serve is already made and displayed ready for them to serve you. The prices are also great for the large portions they serve. When I order the longaniza it takes about 10 minutes for them to make. My only complaint is that the lines are usually really long which is telling of how great the food is but it would be nice if they had more workers. I've been a customer for years and wanted to take the time to provide a review after another delicious meal. I ordered a shrimp mofongo with extra shrimp, passion fruit drink and carrot cake. I treat myself to this feast about twice a month. All the dishes I've tried roast chicken, salmon, fried fish have been very good and the portions are generous. There is not much ambiance so I don't normally eat there. I would highly recommend ordering in or getting the food to go. Especially for small holiday gatherings and no time to cook this place is a life saver if you're on a budget. The lineup area to order is pretty much fused into the dining area so you can get an idea of why take out is best. A mixed bag of patrons abounds so keep that in mind, depending on the time of day during your visit. Bathrooms are available for your use, but are not the most highly maintained. (Clean bathrooms are important to me) Anyhow, their soup, roasted chicken, rice and beans and ribs are pretty solid. Their oxtail is overpriced and too high on the bone and fat to meat ratio, in my opinion. However, you may have a more favorable experience. They do deliver if you call it in, but this is not their strong suit. It's better to pick up and always check to make sure you got your exact order. Tropical Grill is truly an affordable spot to get great home cooked food. I only get their food when I am at work its about 11 blocks down. I have had the lunch special(1/4 chicken, salad, yellow rice and beans, and a drink!) which is only $6..you honestly cant beat it. My company has also catered from here a few times and the other items on their menu are quiet tasty. One thing about this spot is if you can walk in and grab your food it will take such a shorter period of time, its so unpredictable with this place. When I order for delivery I have gotten my food in 30 minutes but have also waited up to 3 hours, they are not very friendly over the phone and can not give you many updates on your order. If its a group of us ordering at work its better just to send one person down there to pick up the order; either that or order at around 11am so you can get it in time for lunch. read more

Like I have done before after i received a dry burnt chicken. I've come here for a long time because it's close to work. The food here is mediocre, mostly because it all tastes the same. I really taste no difference between white rice and moro or chicken stew and beef stew. They should taste different and they don't, so their food is not seasoned well. Their rotisserie chicken is typically burnt around the edges and incredibly dry. Service can be chaotic and slow and it's always crowded because there are not many Spanish restaurants nearby. Their food is not terrible, but it's not great. If you're hungry eat it but if you want something tastier and more authentic look elsewhere. read more

The food was awesome, don't get me wrong, but... I'm disabled, and I have a service dog. Under federal law, a service dog is allowed to accompany the disabled person it works for anywhere (within reason), including restaurants. When I entered this restaurant and began ordering, it didn't look like I was going to have any problems. However, as I got closer to the end of the line, the manager approached me and told me that I would have to leave. I explained to her that my dog is a service dog, and as such, he is allowed in public places - but she wasn't interested in hearing me. She told me to pay and get out, even going so far as to tell me to pay and then go wait outside for someone to bring me my food. The other customers were all staring and offering their opinions. Not only do I have to call multiple times (13 times at one point) to have my order taken, they've screwed up my order on several occasions but most annoyingly it ALWAYS takes at least an hour and a half to receive my food. We were wandering around Harlem around noon looking for lunch and stumbled on this place. There was a line out the door of local people, which is always a good sign when you have no idea about a restaurant. This is a very casual place, you go in line up, order and pay and take your food to the tiny tables. The prices are unbelievably cheap for Manhattan, even by Harlem standards. You can get a whole roasted chicken for $7, $9 if you want it spiced. That is unbelievable. You can barely buy a whole raw chicken for that and you will get it roasted to absolute perfection, so that the skin is crispy and the meat falls off the bone. If I lived in the area, I would pick one of these up for the week and use the leftovers for soups, etc. Our lunch, including sides and drinks, salads for two people came to $12. Yeah, you read that right. The sides were only so-so, beans and rice were a bit dry and under seasoned. The salads were nothing to write home about (other than to tell your mother, that, yes, you are eating your vegetables). The chicken is definitely the reason to go here. This place is the best! Three of us came here one day after work and got one of the combos which included chicken, rice, caesar salad, black beans and a 2 Liter drink. My eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw how much food it was! The three of us ate until we were full and still had some to take home! The chicken was moist and seasoned to perfection and was the perfect combo with the rice. As far as the dining here... It's not fancy by any means but it gets the job done. This place is quite hood. When I've dared to eat in here, I've heard men yelling at men with phrases such as "Baby's Momma". The tables are not clean. So why eat here?
