I had the misfortune of calling Charter inquiring about becoming a new customer. They have been in…read morethe process of running fiber down our road and subsequent salespersons have been carpeting the neighborhood with flyers for service. One such flyer caught my attention with an offer for 1Gbps service for $40 a month for 3 years. I even took a picture of it because I felt that was a phenomenal deal. I spoke with Sean/Shawn (he did not spell his name for me) from South Carolina. I will preface the rest of this letter with a statement that I also work in a contact center so I'm aware of the various sales tactics employed to upsell customers that call into them. I knew exactly what I wanted and I informed Sean, I didn't want anything else other than internet service, period. To which Sean informed me that he had no such deal to offer. Instead, Sean wanted to walk me through a list of questions to elicit upsell charges of which I wanted none of. At this point I was reminded of the adage "if it is too good to be true, it probably isn't..." For several minutes I go back and forth with Sean about the flyer that I have a picture of that states this offer to which Sean says does not exist. (I should also clarify. I am driving at this point so I cannot look up the picture.) Sean offers me an email address to send the offer to him directly to see if there's anything they can do to match the offer. It is at this point that Sean states the offer is probably a bundle deal. Meaning I can't get just the $40 a month service without adding on additional services I do not want. At this point I'm at a red light and I look up the picture I had taken of said offer and sure enough in very small print with an asterisk next to the offer lies the telling qualifying print "must purchase a bundle pack to receive the offer." At this point I am mad at myself for not knowing better and very frustrated with Charter's lack of transparency and ease of effort for their consumers. My frustration is not with Sean, yet. At this point I have been on the phone for nearly 20 mins and Sean is following his script trying to get me back on track for a sale. I know this because I also work in a call center to which I tell Sean the very same thing. Here's where things turn. I'm going to be generous to Sean here and I really shouldn't be. I'm going to assume that. Sean heard that I work at his call center, not a call center. Sean then tells me, a customer that is calling you looking to be a new customer, "look, if you work in the same call center as I do, then I don't understand why are you being so difficult with me? You're being a little difficult, um, because if you understand, like, it's really here. We're here really to save money." Wow I informed Sean that I don't work at your call center. I work at a call center. Presumably Sean realizes he screwed up and gets very quiet and I request a supervisor after asking if all of their calls are recorded to which he responded with yes they are. Several minutes pass and Xavier jumps on the line and makes the obligatory apologies for the bad service and that he will coach Sean as appropriate. And proceeds to ask me what it would take to earn my business today. To which the answer is simple. I wanted the gigabit service for $40 a month for 3 years as advertised sans all the fine print. I wanted the gigabit service for $40 a month for 3 years as advertised. And to Xavier's credit or his unwillingness to try, or I'm not sure which, he tells me no one can offer that. I have had Comcast Xfinity service for eight years and I have zero complaints about it. It is not 1Gbps fiber, but it works and it is reliable. I have zero intention of moving my business to Charter at this point along with three other family members and numerous other friends I know in this neighborhood who will share this story.

So I called Spectrum to set up service and they told me that I just have to say that I rent a room and I need a new connection. I told the guy on the phone when I called Spectrum, I want strictly Internet I'm not going to change my phone nor am I going to buy TV. I told him if he kept going on and on I was gonna hang up on him and that's exactly what I did. So I came here in person and told them what I was told, that I would just have to get my own connection And that I would have it set up as I rent a room. She said no you can't make any changes to the account because you're not the account holder. I explained to her that I have nothing to do with my landlord and I would need a new connection. I don't pay his bills he doesn't pay my bills and we are not affiliated. I said that I need a new connection as in a new router. She said she can't do that unless my landlord comes in person with his ID. Screw that. I told her that she should call someone higher than her to verify that this is what I was told and she said she can't do it.
