I got "level 1 spicy" I think it was called? And it is plenty hot. Trust the Thai on their heat scale and then some! lol. I only say this when I truly mean it, because I know times are tough and we don't want to just be throwing money into the void -- TRY THIS SPOT. It has a new regular in me! My experience was incredibly disappointing and while they tried their best to accommodate us, we felt it was a stressful dining experience. -- After reading the stellar reviews, I dined at Chon Tong with a party of 6 on a Saturday afternoon. There was already a large group of maybe 12 seated. When we walked in, we were seated but weren't handed any menus. We didn't think much at the time, but having the other table hand us their menus to share with them since the waitress didn't give us any for so long should have clued us in to what the service would be like. We also were not fans of the golden plastic cups for water. We ordered two lemon iced teas (Cha Yen) and one butterfly pea tea (Aun Chan Ma Now) in addition to the plates of Moo Tad Nam Pla (fried tamarind pork belly), Massaman curry, Pad See Ew (2-chicken, 1-beef) , Tum Pla Ra (NE style papaya salad), Guy Tiew Reu (Thai noodle soup), and Khao Pad Pineapple (pineapple fried rice). The Bad: - Overall the service was really bad. We had plates brought to us which weren't ours and were asked many times what we ordered again. When we asked for updates we were told the food was almost ready many times, which wasn't true. We also didn't receive our teas in the 1+ hour we sat at our table. - When we tried to flag down the waitress for things like water or the bathroom code, we were told to wait. At a certain point the nearby table heard that we were going to run to our apartment to use the bathroom, and gave us the code they got earlier. - As they seated three additional tables of 2 after we were seated, they seemed to be stretched even thinner. - Since only the Massaman curry and Moo Tad Pla came out after 40 minutes, we all shared them as a table of 6 since we were so hungry. - When the Pad See Ew dishes finally came out, they had a truly unpleasant burnt/charred taste. And it was more prominent in the second dish to come out, making that one actually inedible. They were kind enough to remove one from our final bill. - After around 1 hour and 20 minutes of no drinks (lemon tea, butterfly pea tea), and with half of the other dishes we ordered not out yet, we asked to just pay and box any remaining food to go. - When we were given our takeout eventually, we did not receive our drinks (but did pay for them). So we had to come back after we got home to get them. - When we were eating the packed takeout food at home, the Khao Pad Pineapple felt like steamed rice rather than fried. It had no/very neutral flavor- very healthy but it wasn't what we envisioned. The Good: - The Moo Tad Nam Pla (fried tamarind pork belly) was pretty good. It had a good fry but needed a bit more flavor. - The Massaman curry came out after 30 minutes and was (relatively) fast. It was delicious. - The Guy Tiew Reu (noodle soup) was pretty good also! The beef was a bit tough and the broth very salty, but it was very flavorful! - The Tun Pla Rha (papaya salad) was good! However warning, it was painfully spicy! - The owner tried hard to address our concerns while in the midst of cooking, and tried to resolve it in any way he could. He stated his wife was away, which caused many delays. - They gave us one free Au Chun Ma Now drink when we came back a second time to get our forgotten drinks. While I deeply respect the husband/wife duo team, my dining experience was not ideal. I do want acknowledge they took our concerns seriously. However, we would've greatly appreciated if the front-of-house had just let us know initially that the kitchen was spread thin before seating us, or if we had received our drinks so we could've just chatted over tea. Overall, Chon Tong has a lot to grow, but has some solid dishes which are worth trying.
