Too begin with, the staff was friendly. But that's it. I had a Cheesesteak. Pimp had the Chicken Philly. My sandwich was disappointing at best. The meat has no seasoning (unless you consider cheese a seasoning). Pimp's sandwich was unseasoned. Sauce made the bun a soggy mess. We had curly fries which were completely underwhelming. The place could use a good cleaning. The counter near the self serve pop dispenser was sticky. Fortunately it's not warm enough. Had it been, we would have been dining with flies. Superman Cheesecake looks good. But honestly, I'm afraid to eat it. Total bill: $44 for two sandwiches, fries and cheesecake. We won't be back. read more

I've been a long time customer of lefties cheesesteak at the original location on 6 mile and metal belt. In my opinion, their cheesesteaks are top-notch. Up until today I have never had a complaint. In fact, I often tell people about how good they are and recommend them. Now I've only had the cheesesteaks, the chickens, cheesesteaks, corn, beef, egg rolls, and corn beef sandwich, which is all top-notch. The employees are the only reason that this review did not get a one star. I've never had any other hamburgers, but the reviews and employees were all positive so curiosity got the best of me and I ordered a cheeseburger yesterday. You'll see from the photos why I didn't eat it. Customer service across all industries are at our all-time low. So I'm not sure why owners and management don't try to make a better effort to ensure repeat business. I asked for my burger to have grilled onions, I ordered at the store and waited for my order now when I opened up the box as you can tell from the pictures, the cheese wasn't melted and when I lifted the cheese from the burger burnt grilled onions were hidden underneath. The mayo was squeezed out of one side. I was hesitant about a $9 burger but if your business model is not to get me to but another one, then Lefty's surely accomplished that mission with flying colors. I lifted up the tomatoes on the bottom and they were shredded lettuce that obviously comes out of a bag and was not very appetizing at all, but what caught my eye was that there were no condiments actually on the burger except on the side from the pictures. I live in Detroit and I did not know the burger was constructed with so little care. So I didn't eat it. I wanted to show the restaurant exactly what they were handing out and I didn't wanna appear like I was trying to get a refund or read free food. I do business, seminars and business consulting, and although Lefyt's is successful businessman, he lacks the finesse to maintain a smidgette of customer loyalty. I return to the store today and I was only offered to remake the burger. I was watching the NFL playoffs so the store was closed. Now I drove to the store, ordered & paid for my food. Drove back home; food wasn't right and store closed before I made it back. So I drive back to store and was told that the owner doesn't allow refunds. I didn't ask for refund but I did want a little consideration for my inconvenience. I've spoken with manger many times and he's a super nice & friendly person, very knowledgeable & respectful. My problem wasn't with him, it was with the owner. Making a burger over that was ordered & paid for almost 24 hours ago isn't even doing the bare minimum of an apology for my inconvenience. They (staff) can't even give an extra sandwich or drink. Message to the owner, you can't impose your will on customers when you haven't met quality standards and expect them to be happy with remaking a product that was rightfully theirs to begin with. I know you won't respond to this review because it probably will force you to lie. My question to the owner is 2-part: 1st, from pics, would you eat it and say your expectations were met? 2nd, would you go to a food establishment under these circumstances and say, "They're doing a great job with customer service?" This review isn't all bad, the burger was actually a good burger, not a great burger but it was very good. You do have a great manager in Jonah because if not for him this would be a 1 star review without the possibility of ever returning. It has been a while since I last visited Lefty's, certainly prior to its fresh coat of paint and digital screens. Of course, I had to have the cheesesteak, even though they have a robust menu, including burgers, corned beef sandwiches, wings, and loaded fries. I went with the original, large, which included thinly-sliced ribeye steak, grilled onions, and cheese sauce, on a soft hoagie roll. The sandwich was huge so I was only able to have half. I found the cheese sauce to be overly salty. The customer in line after me ordered hers with extra cheese sauce - so maybe it's just me. This was not the only cheesesteak sandwich available: the Southpaw, with Cheetos (a personal weakness) and the Winfrey, looked particularly interesting. I was also intrigued by the loaded fries - I saw the huge sign well after I ordered my plain fries. Incidentally, the fries remained crunchy despite being packed in styrofoam. I have had a liken for cheesesteaks since I was a kid. IMO, Lefty's makes the best in the area. The hoagies are always hot, fresh and filled with juicy meat and decadent cheese. My favorite is a simple steak, cheese & mushrooms. So yummy! The onion rings served are thick and battered, not breaded. Ordered lefty's hamburger, big poppa sub, lemon pepper wings and Korean bbq wings and lastly a Superman cheesecake. Lemon pepper & Korean bbq Wings were very flabby had a lot of fat on them very little meat and not very crispy either. Didn't like the Korean bbq sauce but the Lemon pepper seasoning is VERY good. they need to change their supplier for chicken wings. Not giving them good quality. Big poppa sub was just disappointing to say the least. Lefty's cheeseburger WAS actually above average . The Meat very fresh they did a very simple approach on the cheeseburger the fresh toppings just tasted good. Superman cheesecake was good in flavor but the texture was bad just has these annoying tiny chunks in it that ruined the smoothness made chewing it feel more like a chore and not a treat. OVERALL 2.5 out of 5 they are very expensive in comparison to most other food spots that are well known and they haven't figured out how to deliver on the quality and taste expectations for paying such big bucks for a meal. read more

Geez this ain't gonna be easy because just too much is wrong. I am an east coaster growing up in jersey and Philly so I know what this stuff is supposed to taste like. Here goes nothing. We frequent here occasionally and it's nothing to write home about. The food is not bad but it is pretty mediocre specifically their burgers. My personal preference is that they wouldn't chop the lettuce because it's quite messy to eat. The staff are friendly and fast and I do like their chili cheese fries! read more

The grilled onions that were purported to be on the sandwich were either non-existent or so tiny that they might as well have been. Never even heard of this place! She said someone mentioned it and we should try it since we were out running errands and what-knot and were going right by there. I said, "But of course!" Now, you must understand that there used to only be one place to get a Philly Cheese Steak Hoagie. And that was Gabriel's, anyone know Gabriel's on the way to Ypsi, which has been there for at least my lifetime and I'm old. Stopped by for lunch this afternoon and this place is legit! Ordered an 8 inch cheesesteak with curly fries. The cheesesteak came with peppers and mushrooms and was easily one of the best cheesesteaks I've ever had. The steak was flavorful and juicy and the umami flavor of the mushrooms provided a nice change of pace. The bun was soft and held up the gooey cheese quite well. My only (minor) complaint would be that the cheese was all towards the bottom of the bun, but it didn't really affect the sandwich much. The curly fries were delectable, crispy and well seasoned, some of the best fries I've ever had and a more than generous portion One random thing I noticed, the soda fountain isn't serve yourself which is rare nowadays, but really not a big deal. We ordered The Winfrey --their chicken hoagie-- and it was jam-packed with flavor and overflowing with messy goodness (see photo). If you like a little spice, I recommend adding cherry peppers! Only downside is that the hoagie was hard to eat without a knife and fork, and the bread got soggy quite quickly which made it fall apart easily. read more

I really like Lefty's Cheesesteak and Hoagies and I want to love it but they have a few things to improve upon. Mainly the fact that every thing you put on your cheesesteak costs extra. I understand for upcharging for things like extra cheese or bacon or premium toppings but lettuce and tomatoes are typically freebies at every other competing restaurant. Sixty five cents a piece extra for lettuce, tomato, and Italian dressing is kind of ridiculous and really adds up on an already pricey sub. I could probably buy a whole tomato or entire head of lettuce for nearly the same price. I remember eating here a few years ago and wasn't particularly impressed. The subs were overly greasy and they nickeled and dimed you for toppings and the lettuce and tomato I received was so minuscule it was like I didn't have any anyways so I didn't see anything to rush back for and haven't been in a few years. Recently I've seen lots of buzz about Lefty's on Instagram amongst food bloggers who are always posting mouth watering pics so I thought I'd give them another shot. Apparently they have an updated menu and I believe new owners. They are now known for their fab five cheesesteak creations, the South Paw topped with Cheetos, Italian Stallion - a pizza spin on a cheesesteak, the Winfrey - a spicy chicken Philly topped with lettuce, tomato, hot peppers and chipotle aioli, the Big Poppa - topped with pickles and thousand island dressing, and the Munchin with Michael - an infamous food vlogger's fave, a popcorn chicken Buffalo sauce sub. The Fab Five subs were priced at $8.99 for an 8" and $11.99 for a 12" and a plain cheesesteak with just cheese and onions is $7.49 for an 8", and $10.89 for a 12". The cheesesteak meat was not greasy at all now and the sandwich was loaded with thinly sliced tender meat. It was a very good quality cheesesteak, not an inkling of gristle or fat. They did however still charge 65 cents a piece for lettuce and tomato. The only freebie is pepper relish which I tried but wasn't really a fan of. The sweet spicy relish doesn't really taste great on a cheesesteak. Upon my first visit back I tried the South Paw with Cheetos and liked it. The cheese sauce was good with the crunch of the Cheetos. Flamin' Hot Cheetos would also be good on it. I also tried the Winfrey upon another visit, and I liked that they put lettuce and tomato on it but this sub is extremely hot and spicy with the hot peppers and chipotle aioli. I liked the chipotle aioli but had to pick off some of the peppers. While I really like all the creative new flavor concoctions, I'm a Philly cheesesteak purist and the only thing preventing me from giving a five star review is that I wish they had a cheesesteak on the menu that has cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato and choice of dressing. The fries were better than previously. I wasn't a fan of the old crinkle fries but I really liked their new curly fries. Fries and curly fries are around $3 and are large enough to split. I found this place on Yelp near where I was working. Although I gave up meat for lent, I felt that I may not be able to try this place since I am not in Detroit anymore. I got the cheesesteak hoagie, which is Lefty's signature sandwich. The cheesesteak was really good and the hot peppers actually were a great topping. The cheese fries were ok. Growing up, steak definitely wasn't in my menu and you couldn't pay me to eat a cheesteak sandwich or anything. As an adult steak still isn't one of my faves. However, my friend told me about lefty's and said I HAD to try it. The Most AMAZING sandwich! We went to the location in Livonia. I ordered the 8" cheesteak with spicy chilli peppers, Swiss/American cheese, and grilled mushrooms. Even added some Italian dressing on the side. As well as an order of curly fries. The food was hot and fresh which is a big deal to me, ALWAYS! The atmosphere was nice there are places to sit but we took it to go. It was a large order crammed in to a small container. I know that shouldn't affect the taste, but I'm convinced it does. After seeing the reviews and recommendations for cheesesteak places, I wanted to check out Lefty's! They have dine-in options and counter-top seating area. Most locals seem to know exactly what they need to order and knew the employees as well! To start off easy, I ordered the classic Cheesesteak (Steak, Grilled Onions & White American/Swiss Blend Cheese) and side of chili fries. Their menu offers a variety of things to try, like Cheese Steak Egg Rolls, Beer-Battered Onion Rings, Coney Dogs, and even Corned Bf sandwiches. The cheesesteak meat was cut and chopped very well. I could tell the seasonings were there and the juice definitely made each bite very tasty. I definitely wanted more of a toasted Hoagie bc the bun was a little too soft and delicate to balance out the ratio of steak. I wouldn't mind some light lettuce and more tang/crunch from the chopped onions, as it seemed the steak and cheese overpowered the veggie portions as well. Philly cheesesteak is one of my favorite sandwich. It's really the only reason I go to philly. I rarely ever get it outside Philly because I've never enjoyed it elsewhere. Lefty, however, didn't disappoint me. They use chopped thinly sliced ribeye as most places in philly do. And it tasted like Philly cheesesteak, which most places don't. But, it wasn't as fatty as ribeye used in philly, which is crucial in giving that explosion of flavor, the glistening of the steak, and that crucial moistness. They used a soft bun, whereas traditional Philly cheesesteak uses amoroso buns. A bread that's a little crusty on the outside, yet soft and absorbent inside. Giving that nice bready texture while absorbing just the right amount of meat juice from the juicy ribeye and cheese. Even after 15-20 min, the bread doesn't get soggy, rather it gets this 50% moist inner layer and 50% bready outer layer. I like my sandwich bread to have that mix of crusty and chewy texture, which I unfortunately didn't find here. Lefty's cheesesteak egg rolls, while cool in concept, wasn't as good as I hoped. I expected cheese inside the egg roll, melting inside the egg roll and permeating throughout and moistening the steak. Perhaps even an explosion of cheese in your first bite. But, instead, I got steak egg roll with nacho cheese dipping sauce. Meat still tasted good, but it desperately needed more balancing and fine tuning. If you ever had cheesesteak in phill, you know what I'm talking about. It's so juicy that it drips down as you eat. All in all, really solid cheesesteak, def best around Detroit. read more

Went for the 1st time after hearing great reviews and seeing several food pics in social media. Upon arriving I thought they were closed because the parking lot was empty and was fairly early. Anywho, I ordered the 12 inch cheesesteak and my husband ordered the corned beef special, both with fries. The cheesesteak was big and really good(could do with some steak sauce), they offer this red pepper spread(sauce) that's nice and spicy!! The corned beef special was average, it could be larger(Bread Basket is better on taste & size). The only bad thing was the fries....very soggy!! I asked for a sample - smelled good but I wasnt certain. No response. Word skills not at a high order here. Instead of the sample, I was told they put no seasoning on the meat. Really now? Doesn't sound too tasty. Frankly, it started smelling greasy and like old burned cheese in there. I will never understand a business, in these tough economic times, who doesn't know good simple marketing. Take a to-go cup, cut a small piece of meat, hand it to the customer; gain a lifetime customer who was looking to cater an event soon. Simple right? Lost my biz forever.
