Inside, there was plenty of space for seating, though it looked a little slower at noon on a weekday. I was able to pick up my meal without a problem, and the service was friendly and fast. The Reuben was good. Nothing that blows you away or I consider special, but a solid reuben. The french fries though! That was the surprise. I was fortunate enough to meet one of the sons of the owners. We became friends and he always talked about his family restaurant. I always wanted to try it and got to try it today. I asked the waitress behind the counter if we sit and order or come to the counter and all she replied was, "Whatever."?!?!?!? That threw me for a loop, so we ended up ordering at the counter, to which opened up another issue - to tip or not to tip?!?!? I was paying on Debit, so had to pay then and added a tip. Although I was already confused by the entire principle of this place. LOL My wife ordered the White Chicken Chili and Pasta Salad side. I ordered the breakfast special, cause I read that it was good... My grandson had the dino chicken tenders and fries. My wife and grandson had pop, so got the cups at the counter and filled them up themselves. I ordered a coffee, and waited and waited.... Finally the waitress came to our table with the food, well my wife and grandson's anyway, to which I asked about the coffee - she looked at me, and replied, "Oh yeah, I forgot, sorry." Needless to say, being we were the only people in the place at the time, besides the owner and other wait staff and cooks, I was a bit surprised. Upon first glance, the vegetables didn't look right- like they were freezer burned at some point or something. I decided to give it a try anyways but the vegetables weren't even the worst part. I really enjoyed our food at Charley's. They have something for every one. I ordered the cheesesteak and it was really good. The meat was tender and done perfectly. I've had some horrible cheesesteaks and always nervous to order somewhere without trying someone's. But the cheesesteak at Charley's was excellent! My daughter ordered the chicken strips and fries. Three of us ate here for the first time today and were sorry that we didn't visit sooner. First things first, the service was outstanding! Friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. My companions had burgers which they said were delicious. I had the Tomato Spinach Orzo soup, which was pretty filling on its own. But I also ordered the chicken salad pita and I'm glad I did. We have been "family members" for a very long time at Charley's Deli and Grille! We've "adopted " them and they've "adopted" us!! My daughter used to be a Scottish Highland Dancer and the owners wife is from Scotland and we got to know them that way at first. But we used to meet friends there on Saturdays and have the great pancakes (really THE BEST EVER!! soft on the inside and CRUNCHY on the outside!!! YUM).. and then my daughter and I went every Friday as tradition and my hubby and I still go sometimes in between!! ha ha! Now that my daughter is working full time and graduated from college I still go there alone and feel very comfortable doing so..I take a magazine and I get my pancakes and hash browns (the best ever too...crunchy!!) just as always!!! This is my second time here, and if I had done the review last month, it would have been a 4. After this visit though, my overall rating is a 3.5. On my first visit an older gentlemen who I believe is the owner assisted me. He was very friendly and talkative while ringing up the order and waiting on it. I had the fish and chips which is only available on Friday. It was delicious and the three pieces were huge. There is also something green that's in the batter. Maybe herbs and seasoning (see pics). I enjoyed it so much that I planned to come back soon. My second visit was about a month later. We had the fish and chips again and immediately noticed that the fish was smaller and the fries that come with it were a skimpy portion. They still tasted good, but I was expecting more. Also, the cole slaw has been warm both times. I wanted a milkshake, but they were out of ice cream so we had a slice of cake from the open refrigerator area. Now there aren't any prices on any of the food in that area. Imagine my shock when we were charged $4.30 for a single slice of German chocolate cake. Wow. It's not a huge chunk of cake, and it was just ok. Bland and not very much of a chocolate taste. I may return to try something else but I will not drive out of my way specifically for Charley's again. read more

I've been a customer here for the past 15 years. Unfortunately we don't go as frequently as we used to because service and quality of food has gone down hill, since the father had stepped back. The father ran a tight ship. He knew ( and still does when he's there) how to connect with the customers. He made you feel like you were his priority and serving a great product was his mission.... Simple hello w/smile, small talk, humor, checking in with you when you ate, occasionally bringing special lil treats from the back.. And always thank you for coming. Not so for the young, disinterested man who now runs the place. He's usually planted at a table, flipping channels, reading a paper and rarely interacts with anyone. In our last handful of visits the service has been subpar to what charley delivered.. Slow, disinterested...orders incorrect..delayed... Onion rings, chicken strips fried in old oil and burnt... When brought to the waitresses attn. she tried to resolve it ( young man running the place, just sat there flipping the channels on the tv) but guy in kitchen told her it's just the way they are frying up and there's nothing they can do about it...too many negatives over the past few visits.. read more

I've been frequenting Charley's Grille for over 10 years now yet somehow I never managed to fall in love with the place. I think it's the atmosphere - there really is none! The place is a dependable stop in a busy area (6 Mile and Haggerty), and well known for its quality sub sandwiches. Call me boring but I've long ordered their ham & cheese sub, and it rates among the best I've ever tasted. The location is definitely tucked away, near a CVS and next to a now-defunct Mammoth Video (remember that chain?). When I first heard about the place it was from my dad, who heard about it from co-workers who stopped in during their lunch hour. It's that kind of place: good for a break from work because even when it gets crowded there's ample seating and the food is always fresh from the grill. Charley's is a family run business, which I can appreciate, but unless you come in during a busy hour you're gonna find one of the owner's sons lounging about and taking up the table that's closest to the TV, watching Fox News or MSNBC when he isn't scoping out the ladies who come in the store or trying to flirt with the ones that already work there. Yeah, that doesn't really instill me with confidence that these guys have a strong work ethic or care what customers think of them. In fact, it kind of gives me the skeevies - and that's probably why I don't stop in here more often. Maybe you're saying "Hey man! I watch Fox News and like to flirt with the girls at my work too!"...well, then it probably won't bother you. Either way, if you're in the Livonia area and you're hankering for a fresh grilled sub sandwich, don't settle for Subway or Quizno's even though they're on every corner.
