Legion Park is located on the upper east side of Miami. It is named for the American Legion post that used to be here. The American Legion was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1919 to help distribute benefits to WW II veterans. In 1919 the Miami post of the American Legion, #29, opened and was named for Harvey W. Seeds, the first soldier from Dade County to be killed in WWII. For the first years the post bounced around different locations until the American Legion purchased a 45 acre site on Biscayne Boulevard in 1934. By 1966 members of the American Legion and they sold off 37 acres of land to the City of Miami to be turned into Legion Park. With the money they made they built a new post on their remaining 8 acres of land. Every Saturday there is a farmers market. Park amenities include a playground, boat ramp, dog park, outside exercise equipment, and a tennis court At the end of the park is a gorgeous view of Biscayne Bay. Legion Park contains a historic building, the Tee House. In 1897 S.K. Brown purchased bought 6 acres from William Kent, the original homesteader. He built a 2 stood story wood home and farmed tropical fruit trees and pineapples. In 1910 millionaire William Ogden purchased the house and expanded it. He more rooms forming the house into a T shape and covered it in coral rock. In 1922 Edward Ballard purchased the property and turned it into a speakeasy during prohibition. In later years the building was a nightclub, restaurant, and a brothel. When the American Legion post acquired the land they demolished the original Brown house and parts of the additions. What is left serves as the community center in the park. In 2017 local activists lost a fight to prevent a developer from building a bigger and taller building adjacent to the park than was allowed under the zoning laws. The developer needed a few acres of the park in order to get the 9 acres needed to qualify for a special exception. In return for the concession the developer agreed to give space to the American Legion and to make improvements to the park. The construction is being done on the building right now and it is really blocking the road. If you didn't know the park was here you might not find a way in. read more

Last time I came here it was closed due to covid. Had grabbed a sammie from Ms Cheezious and tried to eat in the park. This time every thing was open and they even had a farmer's market. Tons of kids on the playground, some kids tennis lesson on the single court and a great view of the ocean with a refreshing breeze made this place pretty awesome. The weather was so nice that people had their picnic blankets out and it seemed like pre-pandemic life. There's a tiny lot on Biscayne but there's a bigger free lot on the backside and some paid street parking by the new apartment buildings. read more

Another park that is on the waters edge - this is a long thin park, with pretty trees, a dog park, a basketball court and plenty of space to roam around. apparently they even host a frmers market (see below) Here is some information about this park I found on int web - Legion Park is the perfect place to have outdoor fun with the family, or engage with the community. Enjoy the sunshine in this open air, waterfront park, which is equipped with numerous facilities. Legion is a great place if for children -- the park frequently hosts after-school programs and camps, as well as the local Girl Scout troop. There's also a fun kids playground, dog park, tennis court, picnic areas, soccer field, basketball courts, an outdoor exercise area, and biking and walking paths. The park extends indoors as well with a recreation center. Jump into a game of indoor basketball, summer camps, or take a dance class as the multipurpose facility. Parking is plentiful on the east side of the park adjacent to the community center. I went to this park this past Saturday to check out the farmer's market they have. It turns out that it's a great park, it has free parking but not for too many cars, and I enjoyed walking around this park because their outdoors was great. At the end of this park, you can see the water of the beach or Bay and that was so beautiful. There were two soccer team playing and I think it was so cute to see and hear of the family cheering for their kids. read more

I went this past Sunday to Legions Park with my wife and daughter. The park experience itself went well. UNTIL, I get back to my car to only find my car with a broken window! Driver's side window completely broken. They stole my wife's purse (should not have left it there, I know) but yes it happened. Called the police and they informed us that it has happened quite few times in this park. That said, we are not going back to this park again. read more

This review is specific to the dog park. I DO NOT recommend this dog park. Today at around 5:45 pm, my dog and I were attacked at Legions Memorial Park by two large pitbulls. The pitbulls saw my dog and escaped out of the loosely held dog park fenced door and they charged towards me and my dog. The dogs charged at my leashed dog and clamped on my dog's neck. The owner was present and casually walked over to tend to his dogs. While I fought to remove my dog's neck from one of the dog's jaws, people present at the park did nothing while I screamed out for help. So disconcerting. This is also a warning for anyone who may consider going to this park to be on the lookout for this 70+ slender gentleman and his 2 pitbulls. With many young children there, I would hate for another animal or person be harmed because of a negligent owner. read more

A water-front park with a basketball court, tennis court, playground, lots of trees and great for a picnic... in need of some TLC. This park sandwiched in between Biscayne Bay and Biscayne Boulevard in the historic MiMo neighborhood within walking distance to shops and restaurants. And yet it feels forgotten. When walking around during dusk you'll notice the lack of lighting and suddenly safety becomes a concern... This park has so much potential to be a thriving neighborhood center. Green spaces when optimized have the ability to improve the lives of residents. I'd love to see this park receive some attention. read more

Legion Park has a LOT of potential. It's right on the water with gorgeous open spaces and large banyan trees covering its grounds. There are two designated dog parks, both of substantial size. Unfortunately, the dog parks are full of sand and the gate closures are not secure. The grounds are average in cleanliness and could use improvement. But the real reason the park doesn't live up to its potential is the shady characters that call it home. I have been fearful more than once while jogging through the park during the early morning hours. I've encountered bums sleeping out in the open and was even approached by one. This does not a quality park make, friends. Bonus points for free yoga Saturdays at 10:00 AM (facing the sunrise/ocean, of course) and the weekly Farmer's Market, also held on Saturdays. The soccer field on the water seems to be well kept and offers lovely views of the water as well as seating. There following are also available: -Playground area (no dogs allowed) -Workout stations -Charcoal BBQ grills -Aforementioned dog parks -Ample parking -Basketball courts Bottom Line: Legion Park is a gorgeous space that could easily be a five star park with just a smidge of TLC. I just had the worst experience ever at this park. I parked my car in their parking lot and when I came back to my car, my personal belongings were stolen. This even happened in broad daylight. It's unacceptable because there are no cameras and no staff to report this incident to. There were plenty of people there and no one saw what happened, and there is nothing we can do. This park was terrible and I DO NOT RECOMMEND. The other reviews may show the pretty pictures, but it is too dangerous and I will NEVER be returning to this park. read more

Hmmmmmmm...either the park has been cleaned up after the previous reviewers visits, or I am on too much of a yoga high to notice.... I do LOVE that they offer free yoga here every Saturday morning, hosted by the lovely AnaMargaret from Daily Offering Yoga Studios. It's a GREAT class, for beginners to intermediates alike and the setting is idyllic. In case you didn't know based on my Colee Hammock photos and review, I am a HUGE fan of squirrels. (they are my spirit animal!) The squirrels dancing around the trees and playing in the field are quite amusing to me as I work my way through Downward Dog and all the asanas. The bay breeze whispers and the sunlight dapples through the trees while AnaMargaret guides you to yoga bliss. The Farmers Market on Saturdays is also quite a treat, with some GREAT selections for noms, drinks, clothing, skin care and decor. Legion Park, I like...kinda love you. read more

I was saddened and disappointed to see a park in such bad shape. I was looking for another place to walk my dog, just to change the scenery up a little bit for him, and stumbled across this park with it's own 'dog park' area. The best asset this park has is it's location- oh, and the potential for improvement. Frequented by questionable characters, I felt a little uncomfortable walking my dog there at 4:00pm on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. That sucked. It was littered and the grass was severely unkept. In fact, it was just high grass mixed in with thick dirt and tree leaves all over the place. In less than 10 minutes, my blue babe was covered in dirt, just from walking around calmly on his leash. The dog park door was broken, so no safety in that either. All in all, one can only hope that it is improved and better cared for. I'll know not to return unless I can give it 3 or more stars! read more

The dog parks are a mess. No one cleans them or even cuts the grass (what's left of it). I like that it's covered by trees so you can enjoy it on the hot days, but that's about all it has going for it. I've given it a few chances over the months, but won't go back unless someone decides to start some upkeep. Super bummed. read more

Two words ghet-to. The park is in a deplorable state. I go here to vote, and I live 6 blocks away, so I have firsthand experience as to the condition and the elements frequenting the park. In recent months, the police have begun parking out front, which is to ameliorate the homeless / transient situation (the officers have told me this firsthand). I hope this helps because I would NOT recommend coming to this park for a normal, clean, family public park experience. I hope the nice, affluent nearby neighborhoods (Belle Meade + Morningside) do something about this park because it has a lot of potential. read more

Every Saturday at 10 am my weekend starts off at the popular community yoga class in beautiful Legion Park in Miami's Upper East Side, under its lush oak trees where breezes from Biscayne Bay stave off the heat. Of course, last weekend and the previous weekend, Miami was deluged in heavy rainfall (yes, our grass and gardens were crying out for water and they look immeasurably better as a result), but the downside was two missed Saturdays of yoga. Today dawned bright and sunny so yoga was a go again. Our marvelous instructor, AnaMargret Sanchez, from Enhanced Healing Yoga was there and already setting up. She is a certified Para Yoga teacher and leads the class in a measured and warm manner incorporating standing and seated postures, breath work and relaxation techniques. As this is a community class, people from all different levels of experience partake yet AnaMargret instructs seamlessly to our individual levels. This community class is in its tenth year and has grown in attendance with each passing year. This stands as a testament to AnaMargret, the support of the Miami-Dade Parks and of course to the strength of Miami's Upper East Side community. Thank you Miami-Dade Parks and a shout out to Coach Kim (Kim Sands), Legion Park's manager for activating this beautiful, lush park on Biscayne Bay by adding weekly yoga, a farmer's market, updated playground equipment, a dog park, summer camps et al. This has created a safe, welcoming environment where our community thrives, locals interact, parents bring their children and we support our local farms and vendors. read more

Despite having lived not too far and driving by all the time, I had never made the effort to come to this park. I don't feel guilty though, because it seems that this is one of those parks most people have never heard of. Co-workers who live in the area had never heard of it, and even a Miami New Times article starts with "Many people pass this park every day without the slightest idea that it's there, which is incredible considering how large it is." A birthday party for a friend of my daughter's on Saturday put the park on the map for me though. Legion Park Pros: -Waterfront views, which makes for a pretty landscape. It also contributes to a degree of breeze from the bay and there is a boat ramp too. Might be a good place to launch a kayak and definitely a good place to sit and read by the bay! -Lots of trees, which provides shade throughout many spots of the park. -The recreation room is open, so there is access to the restrooms and water fountains. Bonus: the building is air conditioned, if you need to catch a break from the heat and humidity. -Picnic tables. If you're having a birthday party, assuming you get there early, you can probably grab a couple of picnic tables and have your party there without issue. -Covered playground for smaller children. -A decently sized parking lot, which is uncommon in most urban parks. I would say it can hold maybe 30-40 cars. -Tennis courts. -Soccer fields. -Basketball courts. -They offer summer camp for kids, including kids who suffer from disabilities. -Built-in park exercise equipment, for a more intense workout. Ladies, this means you may run into some hardcore workout enthusiasts, which makes for some good eye candy (hey, don't blame me...my daughter was the one to bring that to my attention, of all people, when she said "wow, look at his muscles" as a shirtless man was doing headstands on the exercise equipment). -They have a farmer's market on Saturday mornings through part of the afternoon, just outside the park, so it can be convenient for those wanting to shop healthy and have kids entertained. This allows you to kill two birds with one stone and without commuting all over the city. Legion Park Cons: -Transients, also known as the homeless, can roam around the area in the evenings. While some are harmless, others may not be. While I am not afraid of anyone, I do not care for awkward encounters with the more assertive types, and their presence can be a concern if you have children. -Not much wildlife, which is a con for me, as I like to photograph wildlife. Other than squirrels, I saw nothing. -No nature trails. They have paved walkways for runners, or bicyclists but if you like exploring nature trails and being off the beaten path like I do, then this may seal the deal. Unverified Facts: According to a mother at the park, there is a bar in the recreation building, where Veterans gather to drink. It's open to non-Veterans too though, and drinks are very inexpensive. That certainly is an interesting and unique thing to find in a park. If someone can confirm that, please let me know, I'd be interested to find out. read more

Great community park. Has an off leash fenced in dog park area, workout equipment, picnic tables, playground, tennis court, basketball court, soccer field, tons of oak trees, and a beautiful Bayview. There's also a farmers market every Saturday and a free yoga class Saturday mornings that I think starts around 9am. There is free parking, and the neighborhood around has tons of cute shops and eateries. During the week it is fairly quiet, but on the weekends there are lots of families here enjoying this beautiful park. Miami parks don't get much better than this. read more

Great park; so much space; much to do. I came here for some BBQ and soccer, had loads of fun. I noticed there's an outdoor fitness facility, I thought that was neat. The basketball courts are nice, too. It's great to see investment into public parks. The last thing we is that the area around Legion becomes gentrified due to all of the reinvestment taking place. read more

today was the first day of the new Upper Eastside Green Market at Legion Park and i was sooo excited to go. unfortunately i couldn't go in the morning, so i finally made my way at about noon. there's an extra parking lot just one block south on biscayne. would i consider it a farmer's market? heck no! there were only maybe about 12 or so booths set up. and sadly not much of it was produce. people selling candles. a stand for fresh squeezed juices and smoothies. a few people selling orchids. ugh! but the few people selling fruits and veggies looked tasty. be careful though, not all of it is organic and not all of it is locally grown. so i grabbed a thing of locally grown, organic strawberries. tasty!! maybe the best i've had all year. the raspberries, though organic, were not locally grown. dagger! they were small, but still very tasty. also grabbed a few veggies and some real honey w/the honey comb and all. love it! so i should probably give it 3 stars, but man, it's so convenient. and i think it's a great idea. i'm hoping with more people going, it will actually turn into a great, permanent thing. find it at 65th and biscayne every saturday from 9 am till 3 pm until april 1st. read more

Good crowd at the dog park, although i always leave with dirty feet no matter what and there seems to be an abundance of ticks there so double check your pooch on the way out. They've added and remodeled over the years adding outdoor fitness equipment which i see being used fairly regularly and a very nice yoga instructor offers free classes every Saturday morning. Good to have in the neighborhood. At night it is sketchy so be aware. read more
