If you like finding a unique piece for a wall in your home, a conversation piece for your kitchen or a repurposed chair painted with words and drawings from a nursery rhyme you need to explore Robin's Nest. My husband knows that if we are traveling south on highway 50 it will mean a stop (sometimes long, sometimes short) at the blue metal shed in Springfield. Currently decked out for the holidays, I wasn't quite ready to shop for Christmas but left with dish towels, a decorative tin tile, and some gray chalk paint for a project. I always find something unique and love checking out every nook and cranny that tastefully displays the latest market finds and the unique creations of local makers. Prior to COVID the shop offered classes in hand lettering and painting but I haven't seen any of those lately. I love exploring the back room where you can find thrifty pieces to DIY........from old maps, wooden paned windows, oars, farmhouse chairs, wire gathering baskets, metal letters, and much more. Ample parking is available on Main Street and the store is observing COVID-19 restrictions with mask wearing, social distancing and limiting capacity. The owner rang up my selections and gave a few tips for using the paint I purchased. She even showed me a finished piece using the paint color I had selected. The store was packed with displays so navigating the store areas might be a challenge for those with a walker or small children. Stopping at Robin's Nest is a regular occurrence for this Yelper. I am not sure why I haven't reviewed it before! I got distracted and forgot to take photos. I will add those on my next visit.

But it's worth looking for, as you'll probably find something you didn't know you were looking for. What sets Among Other Things apart from all the other shops selling vintage and consignment stuff for the home is that their collection is well-curated. You won't find cheap craft crap; you'll find cool stuff from throughout the last, oh, 120 years or so. Any of it would look good in a well-appointed home. And thank heavens, they haven't completely jumped on the mid-century trend as most other such places have. From chairs to rugs to cards, there's something here for anyone with good taste. (I picked up a fairly recent photography coffeetable book at a reasonable price.) There's also an adjoining women's vintage clothing store (unfortunately, nothing for guys). While the location might be a little tough to find at first, it's one to put on your radar. (And not far from NFM, so any time you're thinking of visiting them, stop by here, too.)

Especially when you can find comparable items at a thrift store. As a result some items have been there for quite some time. I love that she also carries some local artists' works. But again, overpriced for what they are. The store is quite crowded, I don't think a stroller could fit through some of the walking paths. I worry about bringing my big purse in. Overall, it's a fun place to peruse, but after many visits, I've yet to pull the trigger on buying anything.

I'll be honest, I'm more of a Marketplace and HomeGoods budget shopper, so walking in, I wasn't sure if I'd feel out of place. I had just finished a workout, dropped breakfast off for my son, had my dog waiting in the car, and definitely wasn't looking my best. What impressed me most was how welcoming and kind everyone was. I was treated with genuine respect, and the staff took the time to help me without making me feel pressured or judged. The experience was comfortable, enjoyable, and completely exceeded my expectations. I ended up finding a piece that I absolutely love. It's now the focal point of my sitting room and makes me smile every time I walk into the space. If you've ever driven by and thought, "That place is probably too expensive for me," or worried you wouldn't fit the vibe, I encourage you to give it a chance. You might be surprised. I stopped in while putting together Christmas boxes for my out-of-town family and was blown away by how easy they made it to shop small in one place. I was able to find all local products without hopping from store to store including honey, candles, baker's chocolate candies, magnets, t-shirts, and so many other amazing Nebraska-made items. Everything is thoughtfully curated, beautifully displayed, and genuinely high quality. The shop itself is adorable and welcoming, and it feels really good knowing that every purchase supports local makers and businesses. It's the perfect one-stop shop for gifts that actually feel meaningful and unique (not just filler items). If you're sending care packages, building gift boxes, or just want to support Omaha-made products, this place is a no-brainer. I'll absolutely be back not just for the holidays, but year-round.
