Old school local neighborhood store that has everything! Don't go Big Box, support this local community, established store

I love this hardware store! I used to live in the neighborhood and this hardware store was my go to when I needed to repair something in my home. Even though I moved further North I still visit this location when I need something that requires you go to a hardware store to find. The inside of the shop is like any other hardware store. It is jammed packed with merchandise. It is like a chaotic mess. I would never go to this store without having the exact item that I need in mind because it is overwhelming. Even when I know exactly what I need I also find myself scratching my head when looking for something. When you walk into the store you will be quickly greeted by the employee at the cash register. The staff is super helpful. I have literally brought a screw that I needed to the shop and the gentleman figured out which one it was without hesitation. He made sure I had all of my washers and the exact amount I needed. He didn't make me feel clueless, even though I felt clueless, because he educated me on the various types of screws. read more

I've been to this hardware store three times now. Just picking up small things for my apartment. Each time, they have helped me find just what I'm looking for. Now, if I were an NFL linebacker, I'd have trouble in here. The aisles are narrow and loaded with stuff. Which is fine for a smaller person like me. But if I were a big guy, I'd need some help. On the plus side, every time I've asked for something, they have been more than willing to just go get it for me. Nice staff, good selection, and good prices. Not sure why all these reviews are mentioning how "knowledgeable and friendly" the staff are. They're exactly the opposite from my experience. I needed a specific type of connector for an ice maker. I couldn't locate it in the aisle and asked for assistance. The staff member presented me with a similar item and assured me that it would work. It did not. I took the item back the next day with the receipt and explained what had happened and the owner told me "no refund" because I "wasn't a plumber". WTF?? I shop local whenever possible - but I'll be finding another locally owned hardware store. I hear there's a great one in Edgewater. read more

A little store that is much closer to home than the Home Depot. Despite no parking garage like at the local HD, the store is close enough to walk to. The staff can tell you exactly where to look for each item when you walk in and is helpful. After Walgreens stopped cutting keys, it became mandatory to come here. Most recently we've bough a towel rack and screws, but also have bought everything from keys and shower heads to spackle and windshield wiper fluid here. read more

This Tru Value is a typical old fashion hardware feeling store in the Lakeview area. Granted this is not a giant box hardware store like Home Depot or Lowes, with the bright lights or extra wide aisles or spotless items but I can always find what I'm looking for. Upon entering the store, the checkout counter/attendant is right there. Then you can navigate down the various aisles to find your item or items. The store is actually very well planned out. This neighborhood store has everything from kitchen appliances to paint to making keys to lawn care items. You name it, they probably have it. Regarding customer service.... It's okay. I have never had a bad experience here. If I can't find something, I just ask and they will advise me which aisle or take me to the item. Again, it's great to have a small hardware store in the area. read more

This is my neighborhood hardware store. My go-to store when I can't get to Home Depot. I am only giving 3 stars based on ONE transaction, but otherwise, the only other criticism I have is that it's a small store and therefore doesn't have a lot of stock. On this particular day I needed an extra key made. It seemed the young man was in training because it took him a while to make the key. I went home and the key didn't work. Price $2. I remembered the 7/11 across the street had a machine that made keys so I went there to get the key made (vs. going back to the hardware store). the cost was $9 and it worked perfectly. I would suggest that Lehman's get with the times, eliminate their key making booth in the back and install the automatic key making machine. read more

Perfect hardware store for the area! Although it is smallish, it almost always has what I am looking for. For example, the fixed shower rod in my apartment was old and rusty--they had an exact replacement that they cut to size for me free of charge. The scene: I'm running around getting ready for an event, jump in the shower, and come out of the bathroom to find a darkened condo. Um, what happened to the lights? A quick examination of my fuse box showed a bad fuse. Ugh, I don't have time for this... and I have to blow-dry my hair! The fix: I run downstairs to my convenience store with sopping wet hair and unfortunately, they're out of the fuse type I need. I run to the neighboring convenience store and they too are out! A quick trip to Jewel results in another empty-handed mission. I'm starting to get very, very frustrated. The real fix: I get my Droid out to look for a hardware shop. Turns out, there's one about 2 blocks from where I am. I head over to Lehmans and find the aisle with fuses in about 8.2 seconds. That would never happen at Home Depot without assistance. Yes, it's tiny and cramped in here but they have everything you could need, I swear. Including my hard-to-find fuses! Thanks Lehmans for saving my day! read more

The staff at this location are fresh out of juvenile detention and seriously lack customer service skills. Without anyone in front of me, I had to wait at the register area to get help so the employees could finish their conversation. Then when I asked for help, one of them said they were off duty and left. I love supporting locally owned businesses but I won't be back to this location. The only reason this place got two stars is because they had the tools I was looking for-which I found on my own. read more

On my last visit, I bought a nice big trashcan for recycling and a little kit for hanging a wall mirror. The attitude you'll get is friendly, helpful, and glad to have your business. read more

First time visit here today and the service was so good I had to write something. So I needed some odds and ends for my new bike, especially a very unique light bulb for my headlight. So I find some bike shops around my area and no go. Avoid Johnny Sprockets unless you are an asshole that thinks energy bars in polished cardboard containers and overpriced bikes are your cup of tea. That bike shop sells nothing but bikes. No parts. No separate accessories. Anyway, I'm headed to another bike shop off Broadway and my peripheral spots this place. I figure they had to have some washers, nuts, bolts, etc. for my back fender. So I decided to step in. The place is very modest and quiet with easy aisles and shy lonely randoms browsing around. Definitely my speed. I don't like being judged and rushed. And to the people who need comprehensive long-term repair and work done, take that shit to Home Depot on Halsted. This place is a closet. But a good one. So I get my screws and whatnot and this woman asks if I need any help. I tell her about my light bulb, she tells me to bring the bike into the store, looks at it, spends 8-10 mins in the back looking for this strange bulb, finds it (awesome) helps me install it along with my other shit on the sidewalk outside and with a genuine sense of kindness. Spent $10 or so and rode away happy. Johnny Sprockets would unscrew my wheel for a $10 fee. Bikers, and others, if you need the essentials, give this place a shot. Very satisfied. read more

When I moved onto Elaine Place almost 6 years ago, I was delighted to have a fabulous grocery store (I love Treasure Island), crazy good margaritas (El Mariachi anyone?) and a hardware store all in spitting distance. My first experiences with Lehmans True Value were really positive. From keys to vacuum cleaner bags, any little household need I had was easy to get and the customer service was extraordinarily good. Alas, the last few trips have been far less than stellar. From the cashier constantly screaming "F@ck you" on her phone, to the angry, rude cashier today, who was hostile and defensive when I asked to exchange something I bought yesterday, this is a whole new crew, store and experience. The good news, for me, is that I've moved from the neighborhood and have a wonderful new Ace Hardware that specializes in customer service and beautiful plants. The bad news is that in a world that desperately needs small business to succeed, this place makes me want to go running to Home Depot. read more

When Mr. Lehmann retired and sold his shop, many many people held their breath to see what would replace it. He set a high bar. I took my time to make a judgment. The owner, Charles, is innovative and can come up with solutions so that I did not have to toss the item and get a new one. He reminds me of my dad who was quite the carpenter, painter and overall fix-it guy. No sale or request is too small. You do not need to buy more screws, etc. than you need and the choices seem endless. Sometimes, I need a planter, dish brush, Mason jars etc. For obvious reasons, you cannot find a range of power tools here. I see contractors and professionals in the shop so I take that as a good sign. Home Depot is not far away and I could save (maybe!) a bit by traveling there, wander the aisles, wait in line and finally walk out with my little purchase. Don't get me wrong. Some of the staff at Halsted are talented and clearly have hands-on experience, but they are few and cannot demonstrate how to fix and use whatever you need. Those of you who may never had the pleasure of using a true hardware store should check it out. Every neighborhood needs one. I just hope I can rely on this store as long as I did with the prior establishment. read more

Sure its not well lit, glossy, and high ceilings like those far flung and difficult to get to places like Home Depot but it is right on your way to other errands, and surprisingly these places also have more of the real items you need than the big. read more

Stores like this need everybody's help. Instead of driving/walking the extra distance to save 50 cents at Home Depot or Lowe's, just come here. It's closer and they are way more friendly. No, they don't have absolutely everything in the world, but they are local, prices are decent, and they will be very quick to assist you with what you need. Wow. This is a terrible hardware store. The last few times, I've received next to no help and even that was with some attitude. They have a lot of the basics like cleaning supplies but everytime I've gone in for hardware items, like caulk or a washing machine hose, they've been out of stock. I went to the Ace Hardware on Clark street and had a much better experience. Next time, I'll walk the extra 1 mile for the better experience. read more

Every time I have come in I have been thoroughly helped. The staff are all very laid back and nice. I went in to buy a few moving boxes the other day and one of the workers said if I came back in the next day at noon they would give me all of the shipment boxes for free. I visited here to get some keys cut on a Saturday, early morning. The cashier didn't even acknowledge us as we walked in right past her. We walked back to the area to get our keys cut and the man working back there didn't look up at us as I stood and said hello over the course of 5 minutes. Isn`t the whole point of a small neighborhood hardware store to have great service and help you get exactly what you need? Not so much at Lehman True Value. I went in today to get a hose repair part. I was simply told it was in aisle 4. No help at all. I went to aisle 4, looked around for awhile and could not find anything. I left, got in my car, drove to Home Depot where I was immediately greeted, walked to the aisle and helped find exactly what I needed. The irony of all this, is that one would expect those 2 experiences to have been swapped. Pathetic. read more

It's closer to my apartment and the staff is friendly and helpful. The girl who works the register is always cheerful. The guy who I assume is the owner, has offered his help every time I've gone there. He's very nice and laid-back. This little place really does have anything you could need. You may not even know what you need, but they will help you figure it out. Items I have bought from there include window sealant for the A/C unit, a light bulb socket, and these weird wall anchor thingamajigs that were the only things that would hold my curtains up. I brought a lamp here to have it rewired after it stopped working. It took about a month to repair even though they said it would be a week at most. The lamp worked for about a month before it broke again. Don't use this place for anything other than do-it-yourself purchases. It's definitely the right place to go if you need a new toilet seat, measuring tape, etc. read more

The customer service is the worst I've seen out of any hardware type stores. The employees have personal relation talks with people while they tell you to wait, or see the manager, who is doing the exact thing. Once I've actually waiting for them, and they ended up being very rude and inconsiderate. Stay away from this place, you can probably get better help from the Treasure Island across the street. read more

I'd give it a full 5 stars, but the selection is smaller (than a Home Depot or equivalent), which can be a pain if you have a very specific need (but the flipside is I'd give Home Depot a 4 for bad location). I enjoy the atmosphere in this place, I did have to wait a couple times because they were talking to someone else, but it reminded me of the little hardware store in the place I came from, it's not the biggest place with super fake "Hello! I was doing some minor remodelling and my plumber needed some angle stops. As he was in my apartment working I offered to go around the corner to pick them up. I wish I had gone to the Home Depot first. The only person who could help me was the "key man" and he didn't know anything about plumbing and then started laughing He called his boss and his boss helped him find the parts but they only had a few and I needed more. I left and went to Home Depot -- they knew exactly what I needed and had tons of parts readily available. Even thoughbthis is right around the corner, I won't go back here ever!
