My family has shopped at this store for decades. We've bought things from here instead of Home Depot, etc., in order to support a local business -- even when those items were more expensive at Ace. But we will be taking our business elsewhere after today. My husband had bought something but discovered that it wasn't the right size. It was in the original packaging, unopened, and he had his receipt. However, due to the store's limited hours, he can't get there during the week. So when he tried to return the part over the weekend, he was told no because he was 4 days past the 30-day return window. This has never been an issue with other retailers. The fact that they wouldn't accept a return from someone who has been shopping there for 25 years was pretty disappointing. But maybe Ace is swimming in profits and is fine losing a customer over a $16 purchase. read more

The staff here know exactly where everything is, so don't hesitate to ask! They've always given me great tips whenever I run something by them. This review is for today's experience. Just contacted this store to see if I could arrange to pay them in advance to drop off 4 screens to have re-screened. I've used them in the past for this service and it involved standing inside the store for an extended period of time, which I'd like to avoid due to Covid-19. Woman who answered the phone just said "nope" so quickly I wasn't even sure she understood my question. I tried to re-ask, honestly I was so surprised that as a small business owner in these times when I'm trying to spend money with them they wouldn't at least take one second to think about if this was workable and she again said no, sorry, but in the way where you could tell, she wasn't sorry at all. So, my screens with tape will go back on my windows and when it's safe to venture out, I'll spend my money with a different hardware store I guess. read more

After having a disaster experience trying to order a grill with delivery from Home Depot, I cancelled the order and called up Ace Hardware. I was able to order the grill I wanted over the phone and arrange a much shorter delivery window way quicker than I'd been dealing with Home Depot. This place is awful. I live down the street and have multiple bad experiences here. Most recently and the reason I write this review is that I bought a ladder ($85!) for a potential project in my home. I did not end up using it as I hires someone to do the work and planned on returning the ladder. However, when I went to return it - unused and in perfect condition, I was told I was unable to. Now, I understand that sometimes it can be easy to use a ladder and return it, but that should have been explained to me before I checked out. Now, I have a 6 foot ladder in a tiny apartment that was never used and I'm out $100. Thanks. A little heads up would have been nice. Never coming back. read more

I went into the Ace at 3911 N. Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL today. I didn't need any assistance. I've been going into hardware stores for over 50 years! I looked around and I was able to find the 3 items I needed. However, when I got to the checkout, a large heavy guy was nearby doing a price check for some lady. Then he motioned me up to the counter to check out and his attitude was horrible! He asked me if I had my Ace Awards card; I did not. he rang up my items and pushed them at me after my card cleared as if I was ruining his whole day. I asked for a bag, please! UH OH! Great neighborhood hardware store. Great people. Great service. In short, just...well...great!

Although this hardware store is under new ownership, the quality and the helpfulness of the staff hasn't dropped at all. I've stopped by a few times since the change, and I was greeted as I came in the door, and directed towards what I was looking for immediately. They still carry a huge selection of home repair, from paint to plumbing hardware, perfect for when you need something quick, and don't want to wait for it to come in the mail. My most recent visit, I came in looking for metal C clamps, and they had a pretty big variety of sizes. They beat Amazon with the prices as well. I was impressed by the gardening supplies they had too, they have about as many options in fertilizer and supplies as a big box store, in a much more convenient layout. I will definitely be stopping by again if I need anything. read more

All I needed were some basic washers for a faucet. Nothing difficult or exotic. After looking for 10 minutes, all they can offer me are o-rings. "They should seal ok" I was told by the 3rd person who looked for them. Well, they didn't seal. Now I have a leaking faucet. As much as I try to shop local and avoid the big box stores, I should have just gone to Home Depot instead. read more

I usually go to Ace hardware in Andersonville because the owner and staff are so friendly. I just happened to be passing by this Ace Hardware in Lakeview and I thought I'd pop in for some lightbulbs. I was instantly greeted by an employee who asked if he could help me find what I needed. He pointed me in the direction of the lightbulbs, I got the ones I wanted, and headed to the cash register. I paid for the lightbulbs but little did I know the box was open and two of the lightbulbs slipped out and broke on the ground. That same friendly employee who I believe is the manager, completely ignored the situation, and didn't offer any assistance to clean up or get me a new pack of bulbs. In fact after I stood there for a good minute or two, it was made quite clear that if I wanted a new pack of bulbs I was going to have to pay for them as well. I can't help but think if I had dropped the bulbs before I paid I would just go get a new pack of bulbs and be walking out with a full case of bulbs. Very disappointed with how this staff handles themselves in situations like this. Anyone can give a friendly hello and point a customer into the right aisle to find something. It takes a great employee to assist a customer when they are truly in need. The additional star in this review goes to the poor girl who had to sweep up the broken glass. read more
