Just wanted to acknowledge Chris who was working the evening shift on Wednesday, 4/29/26. I needed boards of a particular length and thickness to use as spacers in securing some bookshelves to the wall. I was also tired after work and pretty much brain-dead. He spotted me dazedly searching through lumber, offered to help, and spent a generous amount of time finding just what I needed, keeping in mind both cost and the potential for bowing. He also trimmed the boards to exactly the length I needed, and was a thoroughly pleasant and understanding guy all around. Everyone has a home project. Most people fake it to make it. Home Depot is here to help. What makes each store different is the staff. In many stores, it is hard to find someone to help; many staff aren't customer service oriented. The Home Depot in Lakeview is a smaller version of the typical Home Depot. It is in the city and does not carry countertops or larger items. What it lacks in these SKUs is its people, who seem more willing to help. I ordered faucets online and had to return them at this store, and they were happy to help me find alternatives. I ordered Trex outdoor deck material, which came in 16-foot lengths. The staff let me cut them down at the store so they could fit into my car. One staff person in particular, Peyton, embodies the customer service and can-do attitude that Home Depot should be about. Customers are wannabe repair novices who need help, and Peyton is there to help. Curious, helpful, and a good sense of humor. Overall, I recommend to all city types to come to this location. read more

Asked to cut something at 11" and was told sorry it's against policy so then I proceeded to cut it myself with the wrong saw for 40 min not a word from the 6 associates walking around and as I finish a guy comes by and says oh you should have used the other saw - said I should have known better - what a joke of service. Tried to return a light switch dimmer past the 90 day policy that didn't work and customer service said the "computer denied it " " that's all we can do". Can't get a manager, can't think, can't get a store credit or exchange. I can't shop where the employees are robots and can't think. I went to Home Depot's website to see if they had 1 inch ID spa PVC hose in stock at the Lincoln Park store, they did. When I went there, they had the hose on the shelf listed price per foot. When I finally got someone to help me, they told me that they do not have a machine to cut hose and they only cut hose at other locations. I reply, "but you have a $14 PVC hose cutter in your tool section, I'll bet you can use to cut this hose per foot." She replied, "well, that is only for customers to buy, not for us to use." I then commented that it is ridiculous that they have it on their website for sale and on the shelf for sale listed as price per foot and yet they are unable to sell me hose per foot. she replied "well that's how it's been ever since I've been here." I then complained about constantly coming here wasting my time and fighting traffic, and her reply was that traffic wasn't too bad right now?!. I wonder why brick and mortar stores are dying??? I love this Home Depot location! It's been our go-to in Chicago for the past 5+ years. The layout of the store is really nice, and because it's two stories, it's not like a Home Depot in the suburbs where you're walking a mile just to get to the other side of the store. The main level has plants, tools, cleaning supplies, and wood. Take the escalator (or stairs) up to the second floor for paint, appliances, and remodeling/design stuff. I've always found the staff here to be extremely helpful, especially those in painting since that's the department I've interacted with the most over the years. I love that it's dog friendly, it makes the perfect weekend outing with the whole fam! The parking garage is a luxury in the city, and makes it easy to transfer large or heavy items into your car. Always a treat coming here, and will continue to be our go-to in the city for any future home projects. read more

I was in today at around 8 to buy a hose for my toilet. Like an IDIOT I got the wrong one. I rushed back and got there at 9:20 pm, 20 min after closing. "Without this hose I can't use my bathroom", I said. "Please, may I just grab the right one?" "WE HAVE NO REGISTERS OPEN. SORRY." What happened to customer service? Or how about human understanding? This review is a long time coming. I'm a contractor and used Halsted's team of kitchen designers for years. They are all very qualified and have great customer service. For years I have been dealing with Joel, a great designer who did his job efficiently and with a smile. Unfortunately, recently when I went to call on Joel, I was told he moved out West. I was a little disappointed but knew another team member would be able to help me out. I was assigned to one of their new guys, and we set a day to meet. I brought my clients on the day/time. We waited a bit; but the designer did not come. The supervisor, Johnathan, tried to call him; but to no avail. There must have been a mix up, he said. But, he said he would do his best to help us out, even though he was coming from a total different area. He did amazing. He addressed all my clients questions and helped them design the kitchen of their dreams. He was patient, attentive, detailed, and very knowledgeable. We spent over 2 hours with him and he did not try to rush us in any way. My clients were very happy with him and their purchase. We will be getting the cabinets in a couple weeks; so, I wanted to make sure that Johnathan Milton is commended for all his work! Home Depot at Lincoln Park is a hidden gem in the city; it has a great staff, people who care! read more

On multiple visits I have found staff incredibly helpful. There are enough of them present throughout the store. They are friendly and knowledge. The customer service area is also exceptional. Came here about a week ago looking for window plastic in the winter after their website said they had 40 or so in stock. A group of 3 male sales reps stood at the end of an aisle - we asked them and they told us to check aisle 9. We walked ourselves over there but couldn't find it on our own and returned for help. They pointed us to customer service, who helped the person who arrived after us first. We had to call someone over from the equipment rental to help us. All they could say was that their inventory was off and they would not be getting any more. As someone who manages retail - I know we're all overworked and underpaid but the vibes were just abysmal. It's not the first time I've been dismissed in a Home Depot; I think there may be an issue with the company culture. 0/10. Waste of time. Feeling like I'm being judged for being a woman with a Starbucks cup. Will be going to Ace, Lowes, and Target from now on. read more

This location just seems to be difficult to work with. The inventory is much smaller than the north avenue one and I keep getting referred out there. I understand the size of the store and location is a bit of a constraint but it just seems im barely able to find what I need (even when it's minor stuff like light bulbs). Today my partner went in to get an estimate for some kitchen work and it took the staff 20 minutes just to let him know the person he needs to speak to is on his lunch break. Maybe we just need to accept the fact that this location, while the closest, is not the most convenient for our needs. read more

Shop here many times, but had to take the time to do a thank you and a shout out to "OC" yes that was the name on his orange apron. I had have repaired flappers on toilet, no problem, but now was faced with a flow valve leaking nonstop. OC took the time to find a flow valve that fit my unit and he explained the concept and showed me how to pull open unit. The next time we went in to look at some home improvements. Ended up buying a fridge and washer/dryer. Good prices and friendly associates, especially Liz from the order counter. My wife is really happy! Will be back to remodel my kitchen counters soon! They really need to call this location "Home Depot express" or something along those lines. They really don't have much besides the basics and they constantly refer me to the north ave location. It's annoying that my projects require a trip to north ave when this Halsted location is a two minute walk for me. Besides that the store is clean, has free validated garage parking with purchase (under two hours), paid street parking (free sundays), and a rooftop garden section. I went to this store to order new floors for my 26th floor unit. First, they scheduled me for a curbside DROP OFF? I carried ALL of the supplies up to my unit, which took two hours, because the delivery person wouldn't use his cart to help me. Then, I find out that they neglected to order my baseboards and so I will have to schedule another job with a contractor to have those installed. When I called Customer Service, I went through the whole situation and was placed on hold. A new person picked up and had no idea who I was or what had happened, because I was cold transferred. This is POOR. I will be ordering new baseboards separately from another company. Solid two thumbs down. read more

Like many Chicagoans, "home improvements" were a top priority during COVID. I spent hours at the Halsted Street location and received excellent advice as well as exemplary customer service. I'm very pleased with the outcome and can't thank the staff enough for showing me products that made clean-up a breeze. I was at the same location about two weeks ago and had the pleasure to meet Violet in the paint department. She explained that she hadn't worked for Home Depot very long, but she would do her best to assist me with my paint and prep choices. Violet was amazing!!! Her product knowledge, as well as the tips that she gave me were beyond helpful. Violet even asked if she could see a picture of the finished product. The answer of course was yes! The store has complimentary parking in the attached garage, wide aisles, very well laid out store, very well lite store. Wanted something that didn't need a lot of sunlight since my apartment gets pretty dark during winter and doesn't require me frequently watering it. Selection is much more limited in comparison to the larger store off North Ave. Parking is free, yet the parking lot is narrow and drivers are a bit loco, so watch out! Ended up stopping by here to grab some moving supplies and replacement stovetop drip pans. On the positive, got all the bubble wrap, shrink wrap, and boxes I needed to pack my stuff. On the negative side, the drip pans didn't fit my stove. I'd pass up on this location and just venture out to the larger location off of North Ave purely for much more selection. Love this place for all things home. The staff here is just so helpful and they go out of their way to help provide you with adequate information. I just love strolling through the different isles to explore the newest hardwood flooring or trying to learn how to fix things around the house. I also had a special project with the back splash in my house and took to few special tile measurements that needed cutting. The staff was more then happy to oblige & gave me more information on getting the back splash right. Anything they don't have they will point you to place that they think might carry it. I came in today to look at carpet samples. Really nice selections. It took me awhile to find where they were located but ultimately found in second floor by escalators. My only complaint was the poor vanity mirror selections for the bathroom. None had lighting fixtures built in. Helps to have different floor models to choose from. I made a purchase online for pickup in store... a location that is NOT the closest location for me. I received a text that my order was ready, but when I arrived to pick it up, I was told by Sofia they needed to refund me because the item is out of stock. There was ZERO empathy from Sofia when I explained that I had to drive an hour out of my way to come to her location, and she just shrugged and said, "unfortunately we don't have it." If an item isn't in stock, then they shouldn't charge people and text them stating their order is ready. If they f*ck up, then the customer-centered thing to do would be to offer a small store credit for the gas, time, and inconvenience.
