This review is based on my experience ordering online and over the phone and for my opinion on goods received and issues receiving them. Based on my experience as a new customer over the last year, only one out of the four orders I made went completely, smoothly. My orders totaled about $1500. The biggest issues I had were around not receiving tracking numbers or dates (even guesses/time frames) in which to expect my items, receiving the purchased items weeks to months later than purchased, (my credit card being charged FAR in advance of receiving these items), receiving products that were made in China believing they were US made in Amish country, and having to wait at least a dozen separate times for sometimes 20 min + on hold waiting for help...and that customer service needs a pep talk! The biggest rub for me is that I feel snookered that I believed this, "good ol' fashioned store, was selling me all USA made products..(deceptive product descriptions with "made in" info (I found out later) hid under "TECH SPEC" tab) only to find that they just had old fashioned names.. like "FEEMSTER'S FAMOUS VEGETABLE SLICER" ..MADE IN CHINA ...and... STOVETOP CAST IRON WAFFLE MAKER": MADE IN CHINA...here's part of the description for the waffle maker: I worked on it for over a year, until I felt I had it just right. Then, I made sure we used a foundry that could make it in a pre-seasoned "just clean it and start making waffles"..For a Simpler Life! Galen Lehman! Well Mr. Lehman, I started shopping here because I believed I was supporting American made goods and services. The only saving grace in my experience here is that some items that I purchased were indeed made by hard working Amish people here in the USA...not completely sure about where the raw materials were sourced but it's something! I advise shoppers to very carefully check the reviews and "TECH SPEC" tab! If you don't care that an item is made in China and comes with a prop 65 warning..try looking online for the item b/c I can pretty much assure you that you'll find it for less$$ than at Lehman's.. where you're paying for their name and reputation as sellers of Amish- made/USA! Come on guys! Do better! you have to be making money hand over fist with the demand for well made off grid homesteading supplies! I'm rooting for you! Let's live up to our past standards! Woot! First and last order from Lehmans. I ordered an in stock item and a week later, no updates. I had to call where i was told "our warehouse has a new computer, sorry". Meanwhile, i paid nearly 30 dollars for shipping on a small lightweight item that should have already been delivered a week later. I was told id have to wait several more days for shipping to take place. Many excuses given, which doesn't surprise me because personal accountability is a business practice of the past, and after back and forth they did refund the shipping cost which should have been done without such argument. Too bad too, because it's a nice place with great items, they just have no concept of customer service. And since their 1 star reviews are quickly catching up with their 5 star reviews, looks like theres definitely an issue there. read more

HORRIBLE COMPANY. I Canceled my order on 23 April after the product had been out of stock for a few weeks and no guess if it would be back in stock soon. I had someone tell me she ordered over 6 weeks ago and still had not received anything so I canceled and ordered elsewhere. I Emailed, called, and sent over 8 emails requesting cancelation and full refund. "We will see what we can do or maybe send a check". NO, you will refund the original payment method. Filing compliant and dispute with PayPal with all of the emails. Called again today and was hung up on twice this morning. First time while talking. I recorded the second call and am recording the rest to prove they refuse to talk or refund. Absolutely disgusting behavior. DO NOT ORDER A THING FROM THEM ONLINE. Unbelievable they just decide to keep money and make things so difficult for "customers" and hanging up while I was in the middle of explaining the amount of sent emails and attempted contact to resolve this is beyond rude and disrespectful. read more

I placed an order for a 10" potato masher, with square holes. A few days later I received an email with tracking information on the shipment. My w.o.t. on my computer showed a warning not to open it. When the order arrived it was a whopping 19" long, a huge wooden handle with a wire masher! I sent it back after I called them to get a prepaid shipping label from them. Lehman's garnered national attention back during the Y2K scare, and I imagine that business has never been quite the same as it was when scads of paranoid people were planning for a world where a couple zeroes would end Civilization As We Know It. But when hand-cranked Cuisinarts and blenders proved to be unnecessary, the plain folk were still there to purchase non-electric devices for use on their farms. The Amish do make up a goodly percentage of Lehman's customer base, but those of us with a passion for fascinating gadgets and useful devices are also regular customers. Lehman's is a regular stop for me when I'm visiting Amish country, and visits there generally end with the purchase of at least one kitchen or garden doodad, and lots of covetous drooling over the many goodies that line the store shelves. The Lehman's building is a rambling collection of additions, renovations, and - honestly - subsumings of previously free-standing structures. That means it's very easy to get turned around, if not genuinely lost. Some might consider this a bad thing, and if you are in search for specific items, it's best to ask for directions. I, on the other hand, regard these meanderings as serendipitous. When I turn a corner, I might find myself among a collection of fascinating farm implements, or lovely lamps and candles. Maybe even Narnia. It's got that kind of feel to it. Is this the cheapest place to acquire cast iron cookware or a garden rake? No. But it's definitely the most delightful, and that's worth a bit of a surcharge, in my opinion. read more

Gather 'round the hearth, kids: Ol' Man Kebbin's gonna tell you a tale, of long ago, when any towns worth visiting had giant emporia, filled to the eaves with tools, implements, devices, odd screws, wooden crates filled with straw and mystery, and a few old coots standing around who knew everything. ("Really, old timer? You mean bLowe's? Home Despot?" "Get the hell out of my review, you snotty-nosed simpleton!") There's really only one such place left: Lehman's in Kidron. What started as 900 square feet of Amish-ready (non-electric) appliances, wood stoves and tools is now an acre under one roof, with such a staggering array of curiousities and ephemera: Stiles. (For tapping maple trees for sap.) And bungs. (For tapping wooden kegs.) Anvils. (For dropping on roadrunners.) Lumberjack tools, cooking tools, farrier tools (perhaps not what you'd think.) Squeehonkers, filangerlollies, trapsnappers, smoots and self-sharpening, stainless steel retractable pet snellers. Yep. Prices? Well, sure. You want everything under one roof? You'll pay for it. Think of it as the cost of acquisitions and mergers, but of all those devices that aid your journey, cradle to grave, with all your fingers and toes intact. Here's one quibble: The store layout is a jumble. Why don't they paint directions, on the floors? Color code that to a map, then let the shoppers loose to spend their hard-earned retirement funds at will? (Yeah, the bus tours stop here. Try not to get in betwixt them and the benches. I understand that times are tough right now. I also know that, for the sake of good customer service, websites should be updated to reflect changes and that can be done at home. I ordered an expensive piece of equipment that I was supposed to receive weeks ago. The website won't let me stop the order and I cannot get a hold of customer service. If your store isn't open right now, turn off the online store. If you are behind, especially when it's weeks behind, on filling orders, communicate it to your customers and give them an idea on what kind of delay they should expect. And fix your website so that orders can be cancelled. Ridiculous! read more

Unfortunately, some time in the last 10 years or so, I suspect this place brought in retail consultants and re-tooled to maximize the tourist traffic. They took out much of the lower priced, higher quality items and replaced those with items that probably have a much higher markup. Many of the truly off-the-grid items seem to be on display rather than for sale. I used to love to go here for bulk baking supplies and other hard-to-find basic items at reasonable prices. That's gone, and now there's a lot of souvenir-y kitschy stuff, including the usual overpriced stuff made in China. I don't need to go to Amish country for that! I can buy saltwater taffy and $8 soup mixes just about anywhere. So my question is -- Lehman's has gone touristy, so where are the Amish shopping now? That's where I want to go. read more

Really disappointed in the shipping and lack of communication. I paid extra for the 3-5 day shipping and it's been a full 2 weeks and my order has yet to be shipped. I have called twice during business hours and had to leave messages without a return phone call. I finally reached someone today who took down my info and order number and said that all she could do was would put in a request. On a recent trip from NC, thought I bought an Aladdin oil lamp. Free shipping was posted for purchases over $100. So I was directed to customer service, my purchase was in boxes and my debit card info was taken. Eight and nine days later my account was charged three different amounts for my purchase. My credit union froze my card while investigating suspicious charges. Had to go to branch with purchase invoice to allow charges be paid. By the reviews left, I can see I am not alone with complaints about delivery. I understand that my order was 2 days outside the delivery window of getting it for Christmas, but the tracking information hasn't been updated in over a week and the delivery date is 'unknown'. I can't comment on the quality of the merchandise since I don't have it but I can say it has been almost a month since I placed the order. I would also like to comment on Lehman's replies to reviews (and emails) that do nothing more than show how justified the company is in their actions and how the customer should understand this and live with the outcome. This is the Home Depot of products for the simple life. They have everything from jigsaw puzzles to gas powered refrigerators. Whole sections of the store are devoted to canning, cheese and candle making, etc. It's a really fun place to visit, and they even have a cafe. Highly recommend! read more

I first heard about Lehman's years and years ago, and have enjoyed poking around on the website once in a while to see the interesting things they sell. So when I was visiting the area, I knew we had to visit. Going to Lehman's reminds me a lot like visiting an Ikea, but for rural folks and/or folks who want to live off the grid. You walk in and are sort of overwhelmed by where to start, early on in your visit there's a cafe you can stop by, then you finally wander out in a daze with lots of weird doodads you never realized you needed in your life so badly. The giant root beer aisle doesn't disappoint. If you've ever wanted a jigsaw puzzle of bumper stickers or crocheted granny squares, this is your place. Want a tiny butter bell? You're in luck! How about a woodfired stove like the one your great grandmother used? Look no further. Going to the online website will give you a good idea of what Lehman's sells in case you want to plan your shopping list, but I think wandering through and being open to needing an olive oil lamp or a lye soap making kit might be a more fun experience. Just to be clear, I haven't been to the store in Kidron. I've only ordered stuff from their catalog. Check it out at www.lehmans.com. I recently spent some time in a log cabin way'n the hell out in the Alberta wilderness. After half a week of reading by oil light, bathing in a stream, and doing my filthy business in an outhouse, I came to the conclusion that civilization is way overrated, and that at my core, I'm comfortable in my neolithicity. There, I've just outed myself as Amish. (Apologies to the real Amish folk. -TRG) Lehman's Non-Electric Catalog is just the thing for guys like me who would abjure the use of modern appliances given the first opportunity, and spew frothing unsolicited sermons against the Electro-Fascist Complex whenever possible. This is not just a bunch of quaint, folksy chotchkes. This is the real deal for those who still favor iron and wood over plastic. It's real tools, household goods, and appliances made for and by the Amish. And it's all designed for off-the-grid living. So whether you want to move to the wilds of western Africa or back to 19th-century Pennsyltucky, go load up on goods at Lehman's first. PS: Only drawback - their website is kinda clunky. I was able to cancel the items. I am still not sure why this specific action is not available online, but ultimately it worked out alright.

I ordered a portable washing machine for my daughter as well as a cast iron frying pan. A couple weeks after I placed the order I got an email saying the washer was out of stock and discontinued from the store And that I would be refunded. I emailed back and said "thank you for letting me know, please make sure you refund me along with my taxes and shipping." Well lo and behold my refund was for exactly the purchase price 59.99. They did not even refund me The shipping and taxes I paid. I called them and told them and they said that there was a mistake and apologized and said they would refund me the difference. Well that never happened. How is it OK to keep money for shipping and taxes for an item you never received? How is that not considered stealing? I order a ton of stuff online and they lost a potentially good customer. I literally get three or four packages a day from various stores. I will never shop Lehmans again! Very bad first impression. This review is about Lehman's online service. I ordered a wooden drying rack. 12 days after paying for "5 to 10 days shipping," I still had no word from Lehmans, and my bank account had not yet been charged. So I just asked them to cancel the order, and bought one somewhere else. They wrote back the following day and said the item was arriving in 2 days. They had never notified me that it was shipped. My bank account had still not been charged. I called them to say I no longer wanted it, and they said for me to refuse the UPS shipment. So I did that. One week after this phone call, while the parcel was on its way back to them, they finally charged me for the purchase. I called them again and they said they would reverse the charge when they received the parcel. UPS tracking showed that they received the parcel back on a Friday. No word from Lehmans about a refund. I contacted them the following Tuesday. They said that the parcel had gone to the builder, rather than to the Lehmans store, and that it was my fault for refusing the parcel. I contacted them again the next day. Six days after the parcel was delivered back to them, they wrote me and said that they had processed the refund. Throughout this entire hassle, Lehman's staff was cold and disinterested. They acted as though I was completely unreasonable for expecting to be notified of shipping, or for expecting a refund promptly after the package was received back by them. I ended up buying the same laundry rack from a different Amish builder, through a different online site, and received an immediate receipt and tracking number and the product shipped the following day. Artisan-quality work is no excuse for customer neglect. read more

Most of the items I checked were made in China, so much for Amish country. That was disappointing, but the fudge was good.

I placed an order with Lehman's on 1/22/19. I have no problem with the product received. I was supposed to received the product on 1/28/19 but because of an error Lehman's made with my zip code, it did not arrived until 1/30/19. I had to go to the Post Office to see why I was not receiving the package; however, the package was not at that PO. I was given a phone number to call a Post Office sub station and called twice. Finally the man said the package had been returned to Lehman's. I then called Lehman's. Some how the package was found and a new address label with a correct zip code attached. Since this package was not received when it was supposed to, and the running around and phoning I had to do, I asked Lehman's to reimbursement for the shipping of $7.99. After waiting over 35 days to see if I would be approved for reimbursement, I sent an email to Lehman's asking again, but did not get a response. I finally called Lehman's and was able to talk to the woman who I had been emailing and spoken to before. She said I would be receiving a check. Today, 3/26/19, I have received no reimbursement. Also, I have never received an apology from Lehman's mistake which I fund unacceptable. read more

Everyone raves about Lehmans. My dad and father-in-law said it's a must-visit while in Amish country. If you've been to a Cabella's or a Bass Pro Shop, this is basically the same kind of stuff. Large selection of oil lamp products (including repair), laundry lines and clothes racks, big toy selection for kids, outdoor garden gear, etc.... Personally, I wouldn't make the drive just for this store, but it is cool to check out while you're in the area. read more

The website promised orders to be delivered within 10 business days. I placed my order in mid January. Now Feb. 18th and I still have not received my order. I contacted customer service. Sue claimed that a banner was on their website stating orders would be delayed during some sort of renovation. I did not see that notice. If I had, I would not have placed the order. I needed the products I ordered for my business ASAP. I was forced to purchase from another retailer 7 days later. By the way, received that product in 3 days. I have asked for a refund since I never received my order and I no longer need it. They refused. Money hungry company who doesn't care about good customer service. Save yourself time and headache. The eCommerce experience is subpar at best. I have never ordered from Lehman's before. It was not made clear when I had my order confirmation that my item was being shipped directly from the manufacturer. In fact, all I received for email communication was my order confirmation, with no other indicators anything was being processed or would be shipping from the manufacturer or when I would receive my item. When I called the first time, it was after hours and they were unable to track my order. So I called again... And the woman on the phone was so condescending (laughing at me) that I instantly regretted purchasing anything from the company. I understand that everyone has challenges due to this virus, but I have had far better luck with other companies throughout this who have been much clearer with their communication. Just because it's clear to you doesn't necessarily mean it's clear to your consumer. You should be ashamed of yourselves. read more

Visited Lehman's for the very first time this summer. When I think of this place, I think of what Home Depot and Lowes may have looked like in another life. This place is not only special because of the really cool appliance options that they offer, it's special because it's a cultural experience. I loved browsing/shopping among the locals and tourists. I enjoyed sitting in their cafe to people watch while enjoying some lunch. I loved the courtesy and friendliness of the staff. Everything about my experience here was great. I placed a Christmas gift order on Nov. 30, to be sent to my daughter-in-law. The gift has yet to arrive. I have spoken numerous times to a Lehman's customer service rep., to NO avail I was informed it had been backordered in the beginning but, was never made aware of this. I have been given 2 Fed Ex tracking numbers of which fedex shows NO record of the first. I haven't checked the second. I do not feel it is my responsibility to track this package. I, placed an order, in good faith, that it would be delivered, as I do with numerous other companies. I have never been treated like this!!! I have ordered from Lehman's for years and have NEVER been treated this way. Their products have always been wonderful. I don't know, at this time, what the outcome of this experience will be.....but, I know I will never order from them, again. I have told them to issue a refund or, get the merchandise to my recipient ASAP. in excellent condition. I like their merchandise but, it is not worth dealing with folks who do not follow through with promises or, really don't care about their customer. read more

Ohio is an open carry state, and companies are permitted to prevent open carry by posting "No Guns." Why would Lehman's, a Mennonite owned establishment, allow customers to carry guns openly in the store? I did not like being in the store with customers with guns. Please post a "No Guns" sign and enforce that. read more
