Shirley Uy (her last name is pronounced "wee") is very personable, very cute, and everytime I go in…read morefor a physical, we chat like old friends. In addition, she's knowledgeable and thorough. Because she's an Associate Clinical Professor of Family Medicine, she keeps up-to-date on the latest medical research. The only minus is that parking at the Medical Center is expensive: $9 and no validation. If you're going for a physical and you think you might need to have some lab work done (i.e., a 12-hour fasting blood test for cholesterol), get a morning appointment for your physical and make sure you don't eat before you go in so you can go directly to the lab afterwards. That way, you won't have to come back the next day just for the lab tests and pay another $9 parking. If you're a hiker like me and familiar with the Westwood neighborhood, you can find street parking; metered in the Village itself or free parking in the residential area. It took me 20 minutes to walk from Midvale and Levering. My wife also uses Shirley as her general practitioner, and she loves her. As much as I hate the drive into crowded West LA (everything I need, I can find in the South Bay), my annual physical is something I actually look forward to.

I was looking for a PCP some years back, when a co-worker recommended Dr. Uy. I asked her why,…read moreDr. Uy? She said she really cares about her patients, she has a genuine interest in her patients, she follows up with them via email/calls. She listens to what you have to say and shows compassion. I have been a patient of Dr. Uy's for sometime and I can attest that she does indeed care about her patients, her caring and bedside manners are indeed very warm and caring. With managed care these days it has become very challenging for Doctors to take extra time with the their patients, let alone after hours follow up with them. I'm very glad I made the decision to have Dr. Uy has my PCP (Primary Care Physician).

Had to check in for a checkup and yearly blood work, and it's always a pleasure to see Dr. Alice…read more She knocks before she comes into the exam room! I have been morphing to a vegan diet, so I brought her the book I'm reading "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Furhman, and she was fine with me continuing the food plan, and said she will peruse the book and monitor my progress. She sent me up to the 3rd floor for the blood work, very easy in this wing of the medical center. There was only one person waiting so I got in and out right away. UCLA Medical Center is the most practical and convenient medical practice I have ever been exposed to. When you're in their system, anywhere you go they can pull up all your records and see what's going on. And they usually send you a follow-up review request so you can let UCLA know how you liked your visit. The only unfortunate issue in this visit had nothing to do with the medical center and that was that my appt happened to be on the day after there was an underground explosion on Westwood Blvd., and the entire intersection by the medical center was closed! Luckily I know how to cut through the university so was only delayed a few minutes. Talk about your news trucks all over the place! UCLA Medical, you rock!

This is my new doctor (internist). I've only seen her once, but I really liked her and was…read moreimpressed with the amount of time she spent with me and with her thoroughness (although a recent article in the NY Times has me questioning whether thoroughness is such a good thing: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/11/health/views/11essa.html?ex=1363060800&en=0f55c1ae184eae47&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink). Anyway, I appreciated Dr. Alice Agzarian's candor, and feel relieved that I selected her on the basis of a recommendation of some random stranger in line with me at the Costco Pharmacy to be my primary care physician for the purpose of my HMO. During my visit with Dr. Agzarian, I interacted with several of her staff members, all of whom I found to be really pleasant. And I only spent a few minutes in waiting, bonus! One note: Dr. Agzarian does not prescribe birth control, which is fine, as I've always had that taken care of by my lady-specialists. But if you like your GP to handle your non-baby needs, she's not the one for you.

The secretary is rude and as sharp as a knife, with no common courtesy whatsoever. She has always be little me,embarrassed me, and made me feel like I was a bad person because I needed medication for pain. Recently the CVS ran into a complication and needed to verified the doctors DEA registration. Because with out it I was unable to refill my prescription. I asked Susan to call the pharmacy for me at 9:00 am, but she yelled at me and told me that she had sick patients there and at the end of the day she would call the pharmacy around 7:00 pm. So that meant I had to Miss 2 dose of medication. I told her that I am a patient as well and that the phone call would only take her three minutes.... She yelled at me again. So now I learn that the doctor has ran into some legal issue with the DEA and is unable to right my Prescription. After 5 years of me being a patient I would've thought that I would've gotten a referral to a different doctor. But Susan told me to never come back and that I should go to a emergency room. I honestly believe that if Dr. had different secretaries running the office it would be a very pleasant experience for all of his clients.
