Very bad experience trying to get my golf cart repaired at LEISURE PRODUCTS. It was originally sent in for a check as to why it wasn't moving this past August. After being notified "a" battery was bad, I agreed to have it replaced as well as had it serviced. I was told I should not leave my charger plugged in when not charging (the battery bank of 4), yet should let it drain to a low point before recharging it. This is totally opposite of what I had done for approximately 2 to 2-1/2 years previously without issue. With LEISURE PRODUCTS supposedly being experts, I took their advice as well as the advice to get a meter installed on the dashboard. Almost $400.00 and 4 months later, the cart failed again. I had followed their instructions up to that point, and called to inquire about what may be wrong. I was told by one of the owners to check each battery individually. I did and one wasn't holding a charge. So, I asked if I could just replace the one since the others appeared to hold a charge. He said no, I should have it looked at and diagnosed while "under a load". I said okay, and it went back in and I was called a day later. A different, much younger sounding person identifying himself also as an "owner" said I now needed all FOUR batteries replaced, including the one they replaced just 4 months earlier. He said it wasn't under warranty because the other three ruined the one they replaced in August, possibly due to undercharging as well as age. Since I was once again just now told that I should have had ALL FOUR replaced, the new batteries were $165.00+ dollars, plus other charges mounting to over $1,000.00.
I said back in August, my invoice showed $142.00 for one battery. Why such a higher price in batteries? He said he put an "economy" battery in back then because at some point the others were going to fail as well. Being confused, I asked this same particular owner why wasn't I told that back in August? I would have replaced them all. I also asked what harm would it have done to leave the charger plugged in since once it received a full charge and this never posed a problem in the past? After all, it shuts off anyway. He then became very nervous and could not offer an explanation other than "well, a lightning strike could ruin in". Then, he said he would just return my cart as is. Being surprised at that remark, I said I was just trying to understand and still wanted it repaired but once again, was trying to just understand there prior instructions. He said I was making him "shake all over" (??) and he was getting upset. I said I was not trying to make him upset (if anything, I should have been the one getting upset, yet maintained complete composure). When I continued to try to carry on the conversation to get a resolution, he said he was returning my cart and abruptly HUNG UP ON ME. Totally disbelief. I called the battery manufacturer and received a call back from the factory technician. The factory person said first of all, that dealer is not a distributor for their battery, but a second tier reseller and that also, I received incorrect advice that the battery charger being left on would harm the batteries. In fact, quite the opposite. Leaving it on and charging it every couple of days when not in use is all that is required. He also said a lesser, non matching battery should not have been installed, especially without the dealer conferring with me due to issues it may cause. He also said it's possible that if proper diagnostic checks were performed, there could be a problem with the OBC (computer). None of which was was conveyed to me. Since then, I had another golf cart repair person pick it up and is looking at it. This other shop owner I have looking at it said the batteries may not be bad at all, just as the battery mfr rep said. Rather a totally different issue.
I am quite surprised at the total UNPROFESSIONALISM, and what appears to lack of knowledge LEISURE PRODUCTS has. If it's not lack of knowledge, what else could it be? Draw your own conclusion.
My family moved here in 1967 and I will say, I now know where I WON'T go nor recommend anyone to purchase nor a get a repair on a Golf Cart. That is unless you have deep pockets. I need to consider next steps with this company. Very regretful... read more
