Friendly, clean, caring. I did not adopt, but this facility and the people involved are amazing.

Went to adopt my second dog from here and I'm pissed that they flaunt and advertise that they're a "no-kill" shelter because that couldn't be farther from the truth. I saw a dog on Petfinder that caught my eye. I sent a question to them regarding the dog, trying to figure out if it would work out with my current dog. I got an answer back saying that the dog was no longer available and they were sorry they hadn't taken down his profile yet. I went to the shelter to walk through with my family and mentioned the dog to a staff member there. She seemed very sad and kept talking about how he was very sweet and it was too bad. She finally let it slip when talking to another staff member that he was put down because he had been there so long. I was pissed that they try to bank off of being a no-kill shelter and yet they clearly put down dogs occasionally that are perfectly healthy. read more

Had a dog get neutered end of Nov with no problems. Tried in Dec to make an appointment for another male dog online. It kept wanting to give me an appointment for a cat instead of a dog. I called a few times and nobody answered so left a few messages and never a call back. I called again and also emailed. Somebody finally answered the phone so I made an appt for Feb 2nd. I told her my 2 males are fighting really bad since I had the other male fixed so I need this done asap. I never got an email with a receipt probably because I made the appointment on the phone instead of online. I called a few times no answer I also emailed to get a confirmation of my appt. I left a message the wk before and they never did call. I get there this morning and nobody dropping off and doors locked so I knock. She said she was looking on the list and nope our appt was for yesterday. I told her I wrote it down as I was on the phone with them and never even thought they did neutering on Weds because I thought it was always tues and Thursdays. She said no and she 's sorry but next available is March 16th. When I told her I called and emailed she said oh sorry our phones are messed up so I said oh email also??? Nonthey aren't messed up just nobody listening to messages or replying to emails. They wouldn't even ask if they could fit him in. I am not a complainer and I donate every few months for years thru TLCCU. I am so mad I don't even want to do that anymore since the staff never contacts people back. I know it isn't the animals fault but dam they needntobget their crap together!!! I hope I won't have to rehome my younger dog because he wasn't fixed. I can't keep rotating them in their crates for much longer.bits been a month already. I would go elsewhere to get tour pet fixed even if it costs more because they just aren't reliable read more

I read the comments and wanted to provide my own thoughts. First, it's true the facility really needs updating. But, they just don't have the money. Lenawee County was much harder hit by the recession than was Washtenaw County, particularly the Ann Arbor area. A comparison with the Huron Valley Humane Society isn't fair. What does impress me about LHS is that they do work hard to care for as many animals that they can. The past few years have seen a lot of animals brought to the shelter because owners are moving and can't take them, or have lost jobs and can't feed them. I go there often and visit the animals. As to the young volunteers, the ones I've talked with have always seemed polite and helpful. If you'd like to see the facility without a leaky roof or a shortage of professional staff, please join those who contribute regularly to the Lenawee County Humane Society. read more

I have nothing but respect and admiration for the people who work, and run this shelter. I have adopted a dog there, as well as surrendered one because the owner of the dog passed away. I have always been treated well. Keep up the good work!!! Diane Roach Pittsford, MI read more

This is a huge WARNING to anyone who wants to adopt a kitten. They say your kitten has been tested for feline leukemia, well let me tell you this. I adopted two kittens and after having them home for only 1 month they were sick and vet checked. Finally vet did blood work and kittens are leukemia positive. Be careful with their kittens, they just want to rush them out the door so they can get your money, and leave you devastated. read more

I was totally appalled at the way I was treated at this facility. I am an animal lover and went to adopt a dog. firstly, the staff was very unprofessional. they were not kind or friendly. I thought The facilty was mobid and dark. no windows. Felt very sad for the animals. I would not recommend this facilty at all. I ended up going to the Ann Arbor Humane socity. Highly reccomend . I was greeted by smiling faces. A clean , bright , cheery facility. You can tell everyone that works here, totally love the animals. And I was treated as a future adoptee should be treated. read more

As the previous person posted, their hearts are in the right place, however I wasn't impressed with the facility. I did not come here to adopt a pet but rather I took my daughter here for orientation to possibly volunteer. Initially, I was put off by the entrance and the lobby. Looks like it needed a bit updating as well as some roof work since I saw many tiles that had some water damage. We were taken through the facility by a young girl where we saw more drooping, water stained tiles, a very strong stench of urine and poop, and lastly, a mouse running down the hall where food is kept for the animals. I was not comfortable having my daughter volunteer here. read more

7 days after our adoption, we found out our kitten needed surgery for a hernia which we were told by our veterinarian is extremely common, but was probably missed. After contacting LHS about the issue, I was shocked that I was given only defensiveness and attitude by the staff rather then actually listening to my concern. We didn't ask for money, or for them to do the surgery, only suggested perhaps a policy change where the kittens were given another look before going to their new families as that's what I thought they were doing when we filled out our paperwork and checked out. Instead I was told "my vet mislead me" and that it wasn't "life threatening." Very disappointed, would think customer service would be a bit more important especially for a non-profit organization that relies on community for its existence. read more

We visited a number of humane societies in the area and finally found our dog at Lenawee. The facilities are not the nicest, but they also aren't the worst, and it is more than made up for by the staff. Everyone was very friendly and clearly cared a lot about the animals. When we were visiting with our dog in the visiting room, staff kept looking in the window to see who might go home with a family. They were very helpful and kind and we will probably return here if we adopt another animal just because of the staff and atmosphere! read more

We got a dog, and we we were sent off with no warning. The dog we had gotten was named Mouse, and we brought him home, excited to play with our new friend. Unfortunately, what happened after was terrible. The dog killed our cat out of nowhere and when we went to return the dog, we only got a partial refund and they put him back up for adoption. read more
