What a great little campground! My daughter and I, who are Los Angeles natives, traveled from the state of New York to surprise my 93 year old grandmother. I packed all my motorcycle camping gear into a giant duffel bag and checked it on an airplane. The campground was great. The camp store wasn't open when we were there but that wasn't a problem. We drove to a grocery store in Thousand Oaks and got some food, firewood, and lighter fluid. We stayed 2 nights and it was wonderful. We can't wait to come back and bring the husbands! read more

High 67° Low 41° | We made a last-minute decision to camp and booked a spot on Thursday for a Saturday-Sunday stay. Luckily, there were a few sites available, and we chose Site 77. It turned out to be a great spot with large trees providing plenty of shade. The site is centrally located, so you share your backyard with others, yet it's spacious enough to maintain privacy. One downside is that people tend to cut through the site to get to the restroom, which is just a few yards away. If you're staying here, I recommend bringing a bike or skateboard for your trek to the restroom/showers and beach. One of my favorite campgrounds near the beach and close to home. It's peaceful and scenic, but keep in mind that it's near Mulholland Drive, so Sunday mornings can get noisy with motorcycles and cars roaring through the canyons. One more thing! I don't think this campground has any raccoons or any wildlife besides birds, well from the few times I've stayed here. The only wildlife we had to deal with were the kids. read more

The good: I came here last month and stayed for a night with my two toddlers. It's walking distance to the beach without having to cross any roads. The campground isn't too large so I think it's great for families with young kids. Most of the campsites had ample shade. The bathrooms were adequately clean. We saw a lot of windsurfers. This was suggested to me as the #1 family friendly campsite in the LA area. It's often booked so finding a spot can be difficult. We had space 86 and loved it. The bad: The space between each campground was smaller than other campgrounds I've been to. The beach area was really rocky and mossy. It was fun for kids to look around and play but swimming wasn't as great because of how rocky and easy it was to fall. The interesting: They have a camp general store in the middle of the campsite. read more

This is our second year coming here and we really like it here. We come in our pop up trailer with family and they have their pop up trailer too. The sites are plenty big with a fire ring which allow for wood burning. Some sites are dry camping but other have water and electricity hook ups. We bring our generator which you're allowed to use from 10am-8pm. They have a store on site with a few items like fire wood, ice, chips, ice cream, coffee, t-shirts and other miscellaneous items. Showers and restrooms are available throughout the campground as are water spigots. South beach is less than half mile and we walked every morning for low tide and to look at the tide pools. North beach isn't too far and is great for booogie boarding. Great time just watch out for the squirrels and yellow jackets. read more

This is the place to camp if you want to invite 20 friends and blast your music and make your neighbor's life miserable. I never saw a Ranger, so there is no rule enforcement. Most of the sites are overgrown so leave your RV at home. Get the picture? San Elijo SB this is not! This is, hands down, the worst run park in the system! The mud damage from the rains of a few years ago is still a problem! If you like dirty bathrooms, you're in luck. Never again for me! I had a reservation in July for 4 nights and left after only one night. I'm retired and have over 20 reservations for camping, the condition of this State Park is unacceptable! read more

Great place to camp! Quite and peaceful nights! We stayed at spot 5. It has electricity no water or sewer. There is a dump station near by if you need to dump and refill with water. The roads are wide enough to back in and park in your spot. When you open your trailer door you are not directly next to your neighbor, like in some RV trailer campgrounds. These spots are wide and open. Bad things, lots of dirt no grass. Be ready to sweep all day, at least you'll smile while sweeping. You are in a pice of heaven. It was windy when we went and it was blowing. Seemed to blow everyday. We were here the 3rd week of July. Lots of hiking trails or just beach trails. The beach is very rocky so bring water shoes if you don't want your feet to hurt the next day. Lots of creatures to see in the rocks once the tie goes out. This is a Photographers dream come true. Lots of good lighting and scenery. Also do not leave any food or trash unattended as there are lots of squirrels. We saw our neighbors table get ransacked by squirrels and birds. It happen so quick. Put everything away or they will find it. There was no dog poop bags supplies like most other campgrounds we've stayed at. We payed extra to bring the dogs but did not get the doggie bags. Gave it a five star cause even with the "bad stuff", it's a beautiful place and big wide camp spaces. It feels like wood and beach camping at the same time. We booked for January 2021! We have been to this campground a number of times and enjoyed each one of our visits. The beach is a quick walk, or an even quicker drive from the campground. The bathrooms and showers are cleaned every morning (not sure if this is still the case with COVID). Bring some $1 bills to get tokens for the shower. If you forgot to bring something with you the store in the middle of the campground probably has it. Ice, snacks, cleaning supplies, some camping equipment, etc. Don't leave any food out or the squirrel will come visit your campsite. read more

Went camping here and it was pretty cool. The camps are close to each other so you can hear when someone is being loud. The hiking was awesome. We went before the fires so everything I shot was distroyed in the Woolsey Fire. I love camping here. You're pretty close to the beach so you can just walk, what? 1-2 miles and you're on sand. I loved the sunrises and the sunsets were amazing. I definitely recommend. There are bathrooms and showers. And not the hotel kind. There a little store in there in case you forget something or need something. You can also drive out of camp and go to Starbucks down the road or to the grocery store. We had a weird chipmunk issue. Those little rascals ate through some rubber covers and tried to get to our snacks. So leave nothing outside. Put everything in your car if you're gonna leave your camp. Zip EVERYTHING up if you leave or else you're gonna get one of those fuckers eating your stuff. We took a mosquito candle and left it near the fire. We also brought a sage bundle to ward off some critters. Over all I had a great time. Enjoy! read more

This review is about the lack of The State Park being able to patrol the campground after hours to keep others safe. Funding obviously has created a problem. The rowdy campers who partied until 1am disrupted every family around them with F bombs and screaming obsenities several hours after the 10pm quiet time. There were many campers who agreed that they will not return and did not feel safe saying anything directly to the drunk party that night. There were several words exchanged in the daylight as the hungover crowd began to head out and through other people's campgrounds to the bathrooms. Papa and Mamma bears were angry!!!!! It was rewarding to see these rude individuals get an earful from people who wanted to enjoy the weekend, but that should not have to happen and could turn bad quickly. Other than the inconsiderate losers the campground would have been a great place to stay. Sheriff officers came the next day after several people complained and were very understanding and took reports and warned the campers, but until there is a patrol actually doing something at 1am I absolutely would not recommend this campground for families. read more

As roadside campgrounds go, this one is one of the better in the state. Considering it's proximity to greater Los Angeles, the insular effect of the Santa Monica Mountains create the illusion of wild out here along the Pacific coast. Still, the secret is out, and this place is almost always at capacity. Campsites tend to be large, with parking for two or three vehicles each. There is partial shade at just about every site, along with a fire pit. As with all campgrounds, certain sites are more preferable than others. Despite being so close to civilization and the beach, for that matter, this campground has a wooded feel to it. Maples, sycamores, oaks, and other shade trees create a symphony of wind and leaves when the afternoon breezes hit the canyon. Songbirds, lizards, and snakes join an ever-growing population of ground squirrels. Early risers might enjoy spotting a mule deer, coyote, or mountain lion... although these larger animals tend to stay away from the noise of camp. That said, keep an eye on your pets, especially at dawn and dusk. The camp has a small store in the middle, along with flush toilets and shower facilities. If you don't have a lot of time to get away, and can manage to find a reservation for a spot, this is not a bad alternative for a quick turnaround overnight on the weekend. Summer is pretty impossible, but there are occasionally sites available in the off-season if you don't plan ahead like me. With just a short walk to the beach, and longer walk/hike opportunities in the adjacent mountains, this is a nice spot to take your significant other who has not yet found their inner appreciation for the outdoors. My only wish is that the park staff at front were more in the know as far as water quality and beach conditions. THE MISMANAGEMENT AT THIS PARK PUT THE LIVES OF ME AND MY FAMILY AT GRAVE RISK. BEWARE!!! I have been going to this park for 35 years. I have always enjoyed the crowd, the location and the fact that it is adjacent to both human and dog beaches. We had the best time there when we last went on the weekend of May 14. However our good time was short-lived when I went to start my RV that Sunday. I had noticed that the squirrel population has exploded to epidemic proportions at the park but it doesn't seem that anyone is doing anything about that. I noticed a number of disabled vehicles and tow trucks adjacent to them but didn't associate this with my rough starting vehicle which had no previous mechanical issues and is in fact almost brand new. I was lucky enough to find a mechanic who could fit us in right before the holiday weekend coming up and he confirmed my suspicions. Leo Carrillo's unchecked rodent infestation allowed squirrels to inflict severe damage to my RV's electrical and fuel line systems. $1K+!!!!! I tried to reach the park directly but the park refers you back to RESERVE CALIFORNIA who then refers you back to the park. It's a cute little game but I don't appreciate it. I will never go there again unless they deal with the infestation in a responsible manner and soon and pay for the damage to my vehicle which their mismanagement caused. Took my adult daughters and their children here for an inaugural camping trip. The showers and bathrooms were awesome. Fully stocked with toilet paper and some even had mirrors. The fire ring had a very workable grill and the trees provided more than adequate shade. A very nice water spicket provided cold clean water at every site. It was so close to the beach that we could have walked had we not brought so much beach equipment. Word to beachgoers. It is very windy so do not bring umbrellas or beach tents. We lost a tent when a support snapped due to wind. It is also very rocky so be sure and wear beach/swim shoes in the water. Those who did not got cut up on the rocks. The campground was very clean and had trash receptacles close by. We will be back for sure! Great place to bring families. Only wished the noise rule was enforced. We had loud drunk parties next to us that lasted until midnight. Would really have like some quiet after 10 pm. read more

We've been camping here for 28 years. Recently rented a trailer from Camping Adventures and they brought it to Leo Carrillo and set it up for us. After camping for years in a tent, this was a real treat for us and will do it again next time. Spot 127 is an RV spot with electricity. It was amazing to have air conditioning since it was warm in the day. There's a huge tree that shades a picnic table, and a fire pit ring that's a ways off, so that helps with it not getting too smokey in your camp site. Heads up on the ant situation, bring some Comet or Ajax powder and sprinkle it around all tires of your trailer, picnic table, ice chest or whatever is touching the ground. It detours them from getting into your stuff. The camp store has great tshirts, ice, firewood and supplies you might have forgotten like the Comet! Tide Pools are a must, and watching the surfers at sunset. My happy place! read more

My Girlfriends family and I come here annually for a Boyscouts of America camping trip. I started camping here annually with the group and it is always a wonderful getaway back to nature trip to look forward to... I enjoy the area and every camping site we have been on has been great. The whole place really is nice, people are friendly, and the campsite staff are always attentive. We have tented and RV camped here and both experiences have been great. We camped here for the first time over Memorial Weekend (booked 6 months in advance on the dot and was a battle to get a site!) and overall we had a good time! Some spots looked... not so pleasant but we lucked out with a spacious flat site #139 - on the corner, pretty private considering the surroundings and very close to the bathroom! Sites ran $45 per night. Each additional car (2 to 3 max) is $12 per night to park. There is a little camp store that has essentials in case you forget anything - they also sell bundles of wood for $8 and bags of ice for $3.75. The store hours are 8am-8pm and the camp host sells bundles of wood from 8-930pm when the store closes. It does look like the campground is under construction but it wasn't too bad while we were there. Its about a 10 minute walk to the beach depending on how far back you are. All campers over the busy holiday weekend seemed respectful and the grounds were pretty much quiet at 10pm. They sell shower tokens 2 for $1 for 3 minutes of hot water. I used a shower and while it was pretty clean after inserting 1 token there was no hot water so we just took free cold showers. Fortunately the weather was pretty decent and not too hot or cold so we managed. No cell service until you get to the entrance or on the beach! This is a neat place to check out at least once! read more

Been camping here for years. Never had a problem. Yes there are bugs. Yes there is wildlife. (the ground squirrels WILL steal your food if you foolishly leave it out). Yes there are people having a good time. It's a campground! Convenient 5-10 walk to the beach/tide pools. There is also a larger beach (dog friendly) just a few minutes walk north. Great spot to see dolphins, sea lions, pelicans, etc. Campsite is clean. it's a campground not a lounging park. So bring trash bags and then dump your garbage in one of the mini dumpsters they have. Bathrooms are good, but people can be slobs so don't expect it to be perfect at 9 pm at night. Bring soap and towels as facilities are appropriately basic. Sites are nice. Some have electric and some are smaller than other sites.....but every site has a picnic table and fire pit. Sometimes a few people but be a bit loud but it's rare to be disturbed after midnight. Most sights you can actually hear the ocean waves at night....pretty cool! Great little on site store too! Rangers have usually been nice (with the occasional crab here and there) but they do a pretty good job especially considering how busy this campground can get. Overall great place for a getaway provided you have reasonable expectations. Again....it's a campground not a Hilton. read more

I left a review on the last one because I thought it was the campground but I wanna say this place is amazing and the workers there are super nice I think I talked to one named Lindsey or linsday and she was helpful, I was there with my friends and then it dawned on me at the beginning of the next morning that how lonely I was because my wife left me a week before and took the kids in my own dog that I had since I was 15 years old. Leo Carrillo Campground - Me - Beaches Near Me - Malibu, California

I camped here for three days in June and had a relatively good time. It was almost constantly windy the whole time I was there. Some of the gusts were so strong that I worried that our tent would fly away. I noticed a lot of people struggling to set up camp in the wind. Many of the campsites were completely surrounded by pretty yellow flowers, which was beautiful but probably not great for people with pollen allergies. The campsites are dog-friendly and there's a dog-friendly beach close nearby. You're supposed to keep your dog on a leash, but some people had their dogs roaming around, which was annoying. There wasn't much discipline in the campsites, so broken rules are rarely acknowledged. People are supposed to be quiet after 10 PM but there was almost always at least one partying group that never seemed to shut up. I would recommend bringing ear plugs. The bathrooms aren't disgustingly dirty, but they're not very clean either. None of the bathrooms provide soap or paper towels, so I would recommend bringing your own. The showers require tokens to be used. Each token gets you two minutes of warm water and water pressure. I'm not actually sure how much the tokens cost because a different member of my group purchased them. We happened to find a shower that was broken or something and provided hot water and water pressure without any tokens. There are a lot of squirrels and birds. We also saw little bunnies. There was near constant chirping and cawing during the day, which is nice unless you have a headache. The road around the campsites is mostly flat and good for biking, especially for beginners. The beaches are very close and absolutely stunning. If you wake up at the crack of dawn and head down to the beach, there are a lot of cool shells to find. The sand is a little rocky in some places and hurt a little to walk on barefoot. There weren't many lifeguards at the beaches. read more

We think this is one of the best places to camp in the area! It is great for families and an excellent place to meet up with friends. Most of the spots are very spacious and have plenty of tree canopy for shade. The walk to the beach or short hikes is easy and accessible. The camp roads are fairly recently paved I think and provide a smooth ride for kids learning to ride bikes or skate (ours learned both in part from their time here). The camp store is pretty well stocked with the basics and the prices are pretty reasonable for the area. The bathrooms were kept pretty clean despite the not so great treatment by some other campers. I was impressed at how many staff were patrolling and helping keep things up. Showers are token so bring plenty of $1 bills if you need that. Also, they do not have soap so you will need to bring that along. But still way better than many campgrounds. We loved our spot this time (#74). I recommend taking a google street-view tour, which is available through the camp roads, to pick yours based on availability. It does fill up so 6 months in advance is the best time to get the best spots. read more

I think this is one of the best campsites ever. The facilities are pretty decent as far as the restrooms and the showers. There is hookups for electricity needs and water spouts for rinsing close by to the camping site. Also there is a little convenient store located inside the campground that has lots of stuff to cook and wear. The rangers don't bother u much and it's pretty quite. Loved this place! Went 2 weeks ago to take our girls camping and they loved it so much. Our oldest was riding her scooter up and down the roadway just like the rest of the youngsters were. Everyone was so friendly. Showers and bathrooms were very clean. The showers take tokens so be sure to take cash to buy them. I forgot that the recent Malibu fire affected this beautiful area and you can see it here and there. They did a great job cleaning up after it. The beach is and always has been great. Don't expect to sink your toes into the sand underwear since there are rocks everywhere or gravel. The tide pools were amazing and lots of life in them. Just please put them back if you pick them up to admire a creature. read more

Just went camping here. It's a very popular spot so you will need to book months in advance for summer. I reserved spot #116 and some friends reserved spot #113. When I arrived at the gate to check in, I was told my spot hadn't vacated yet but I was welcome to a free parking pass and I could check back periodically. I took the day pass and drove to the site anyway, just to see where it was. ALAS it was vacant :). I drove back around and advised them it was clear. I was given my campsite pass and away I went. There are plenty of tress but doesn't really offer shade in the middle of the campsite so I had to use my EZ up canopy. Supposedly 3 vehicles are allowed and unless you have 3 Mini's there is no way they would fit in the parking offered. So we parked the truck over the curb and parallel to the street and parked the 2 cars in the parking spots, facing the truck. There was a picnic table and a fire ring. The fire ring was REALLY close to the table, I guess good if someone forgot a chair. Took a walk to find the bathroom and they are really hard to find. Based on where I was, in order to get to a bathroom I had to walk through someone elses campsite to get there OR I could have walked all the way around the road. Not convenient at all. When I did find the bathrooms they were clean but smelled of stale urine. YUCK. Lots of toilet paper and some stalls had a sink and a mirror. Showers are available and take tokens which you can get from the store that is in the campground. Speaking of store, on my walk, I found the small Beach Store. Went in and they had food, drinks, ice, fire wood and anything else you might need for camping. It was pretty cool and convenient to have. The beach is just a very short walk away and there is a bridge that you take under the freeway so there is no running across major streets to get there. Also found a few water spickets scattered randomly around. The closest one was at the edge of the campsite across from mine. Really liked this campgound (although the bathrooms could smell a little better and be more of them or easier access). Would love to come back. read more

Love this campground. We come every summer. We books in December and Jan. Pick our spot. Lots of trees and shade. There are only a couple spots with little to no shade. But we love it camp at night beach in the day time. Everything is nice and clean. There is a store in the camp has a little of everything. There are hiking and exporting all around. Go to the beach at low tide and check out the tide pools. Sea life, caves, shells and sea glass. Little ok a lot rocky at the beach. But u go to the right no rocks and way left down the beach less rocks to. Surf, kayak, wave boards, paddle boards and fishing. No dogs allowed on beach but man. Everyone has a dog on the beach. This place is great, especially if you have kids because it is not so silent and meticulously kempt as the camp sites up the coast. The down sides of this place are the campers' fault, so please, if you are readings this, KEEP IT DOWN AT NIGHT and realize your laughing and music carries across the whole campsite, and please SLOW DOWN in the camp area. You should be going very slow. Also, if you smoke, you should stay home since you are gross. This place has nice sites, is next to the ocean, and is far enough from the city to feel far, but close enough to feel connected. read more

My wife and I go here at least twice a year. I can't believe the bad reviews. Walks on the beach, hiking in the hills. Cocktails around the fire at night what could be better. You have to make reservations 6 months in advance could be a negative just have to plan your camping trips no biggy. Don't listen to the cry babies. Update all I can say is wow after reading the negative reviews I must be lucky. I never had a bad visit here. I guess if you leave your car doors open in the wild animals might help themselves to a snack or your pop up has open food laying around your going to have ants. Lol yes the rangers once in a while might be driving a little fast seen once. The bathrooms and showers never a issue. Once I had I large group of boy scouts camp right behind us lol never thought anything about it. I guess it's how you handle things. Still say this place is lots of fun. read more

Leo Carrillo Campground - This is bridge - Beaches Near Me - Malibu, California

Love this Campground. It is definitely not roughing it when you camp at Leo Carrillo, but if your looking for a place to relax a little by a fire and get away from your technology for a weekend this is a nice way to do it. The workers are all very nice and the other campers were all very respectful. There's running water, restrooms and showers here. the facilities were pretty clean and well stocked with toilet paper during our weekend there. read more
