I was charge $1400 to have my sump pump replaced (a 20 min job). When the technician was at my…read morehouse he mentioned the total charge as I had not received a quote from the company. I commented that $1400 seemed pretty high. He pulled up the cost of the sump pump on his device. The sump pump the technician installed was $350. He said that if I provided my own pump I would be charged $600 to have them come out and install it. So, my question was, what are the additional $450 for? I am ok paying it, if I know what I'm paying for, but the information from the technician just wasn't adding up to the full charge. I reached out to Five Star to ask for an invoice. It came with a one line summary of the total cost of the work. I asked if they could please send an itemized invoice and explained the reasons I just mentioned above. After a bit of insisting, they forwarded my request to the manager. This was his response: ---- Hi Veronica My name is Garrett and I am reaching out to you regarding a sump pump we did for you on Sunday. I understand there was some confusion about the charges, I am here to help! So as far as a full breakdown goes, We pay around $350 -$400 for the sump pumps, and labor comes in right around $600. The remainder of the charge goes towards our 1 year workmanship warranty, administrative tasks such as tracking, scheduling and being a support system here for you if anything were to happen with it. We stand behind our work 100%. All of our pricing is flat rate, so breaking it down can be challenging in the sense of the charge does not change if we ended up taking longer to install the pump for you. We do it this way for the customer experience, as some plumbing companies do charge per half hour or hour, and can exploit the consumer by 'taking their time' so to speak to run up the bill. We always try to be transparent with our pricing, and just know that we are here to stand behind the workmanship and product we installed for you. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Best, Garrett Sowers Customer Relations Specialist Five Star Home Services (614) 245-3954 garrett.sowers@fivestargroup.com ---- My response to his: You charge $400 for a one-year workmanship warranty??? That is literally the cost of a brand new pump!! I'm not sure how that doesn't sound ridiculous to you! I also pay the $40 monthly "membership" but there doesn't seem to be much benefit in that either. It just seems unusual that a company refuses to provide an itemized invoice for work performed. I am sure that if you had work done by anyone, you would hope to be able to see what you are being charged for. I need my heating and air unit replaced but I am very glad I had the sump pump experience first. There is absolutely no way I will have Five Star do any other work for me, especially not a high dollar repair! I will find another company that is honest and isn't so hesitant, or flat out refuse, to provide an itemized invoice. It's just a disappointment.

Disappointed in these folks…read more Reached out early November for am estimate related to EV installation. Provided information in a timely fashion and was in turn notified the need to come to my home and evaluate in person. The original date was weeks down the road. Cancelled due to Illness followed by a new appointment approximately two and a half weeks later. At this point we are a month down the road from the original phone call. Come the day for estimate, we are surprised with a $40, with no notification over the phone, through email or text, or on their website. These folks were incredibly thorough and polite. Up to this point, they were thoughtful. They were upfront about everything save for the fact that I was going to be charged for their visit. I called and expressed my disappointment about the nearly total transparency. Everything up to this point was clear and in detail. Everything but the money. I was told I could have my money back but I wouldn't receive an estimate. Interesting how no apology for the lack of communication was offered. Just sticking to their guns. As far as I am concerned, surprise charges aren't ok. If you fail to disclose the charge, then still provide the service,, in this case a simple estimate, if within reason and accept your own mistake. Every other company who was to provide an estimate showed up way sooner, was equally as polite and thorough, and was totally transparent. In other words, I do not see what the advantage of working with Cooper Electric is over folks who are willing to communicate in a comprehensive fashion.
