    Paris brest

Had a lunch here on a cozy Sunday in Paris. Finding a great place to dine on a Sunday can be a bit of a challenge in Paris on a Sunday, as half the restaurants in the city are closed, so this was a great pick! The space is stunning and has a great energy. It's lively and relaxed at the same time with a huge skylight and tons of natural light pouring in. The menu was not huge but had a nice selection of fish and meat dishes. We ordered a started to share and two mains. Service was painfully slow. The macaroni gratin was fantastic to start and really unique with mushrooms. The salmon entree was ok and artfully presented and pork was dry and on a bed of salty beans with prosciutto. Paris Brest for dessert was sublime. Even though service suffered I would return as I loved the atmosphere and the food was decent.

I feel bad giving "Les Chouettes" only 3 stars. Our party of 4 recently had dinner there. The venue is absolutely stunning, made up of 3 different levels. Not sure if we got unlucky, but both the food and the service left a sour taste in our mouths. -1 appetizer was brought twice to our table -I ordered the steak filet, which was perfectly cooked but had no taste -they did not have any meat cutting knife -a friend ordered the lamb dish, it was barely warm when it got to our table so we had to send it back On the plus side, we ordered a good bottle of wine (Chateau du Plessis 2007) and it was reasonably priced. Our waiter was friendly, perhaps too friendly as he used French slang words a lot.

The pretty interior decoration - really the only reason to go here

Lovely decor, horrible maitre d', mediocre drink options- that's how I would sum up this place. We went in for some drinks late afternoon, around 5:30 on a Sunday. The manager there told us it was "complet" and told us to sit at the bar. Mind you, there were only like 5 people downstairs and just a few people upstairs (it was pretty obvious the place was less than half-full!!!) We asked if we could sit upstairs (and no, we didn't speak English but in fluent French (well, my companion did)) so I don't think it was even the sort of obnoxious service you get for "looking like tourists.") He kept saying it was fully booked for dinner (starting around 20:00). We told him it is 17:30 now and we are just going to have drinks and will not stay till dinner time. But still no. The seating at the bar wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for all the stuff that was piled on top there. I was ready to just give up and sit there, but really, there wasn't even room to place my handbag on the counter top! And there were some dusty pieces of god knows what. After seeing me pushing around some stuff there just so I could sit, the manager finally relented and let us up to the third floor (or in French, the second floor). The waitress up there was actually quite friendly but by then we were not in a good mood from all the hassling we had to do downstairs. What's more is that there are not many wine options or tea options (I had a quick look at the food menu and it didn't look all that appealing either.) honestly, I don't understand what the big fuss about this place is. Yes, it's pretty with its Eiffel style and some impressive tiles (I think the only good thing I got out of the experience was a nice pic of my feet and the tiles), but putting up with horrible service (horrible even by Paris standards) and mediocre food and drink options just ruined everything. There are many other pretty places in Paris that don't come with a side of bad service. Will not be back.

True blue French cuisine. Gourmet app.

Beautiful ambience right in the middle of the Marais. Met a friend here after many years. Had wine at the upstairs bar with a couple of appetizers. Great place for people watching and also for quick service!

Great decor, disappointing food and service. The menus were off, the one in English different from the one in French. The 2 menus had different prices for the same items. It took the server three tries to finally give us the correct menus. Then the food when it finally came: The parsnip soup was tasty but served lukewarm. The tiger prawns were served so lightly grilled that the interiors were raw and had to be sent back. We were seated near the bar which was a focal point of the room. Unfortunately the barmaid seemed tense and was banging things around. The manager was in the house but the service details were unfortunately not under control.

The richness of the flavor and the texture which is not reminiscent of the traditional roasted duck or foie gras, but rather a much more like a luxurious and indulgent version. We enjoyed our dinner on the outside of the restaurant after about a 20-30 minute wait. The bone marrow had the best flavor I've experienced for the dish. However, it is definitely overshadowed by the rich flavor of the foie gras. This experience was unforgettable, with our view of Parisian streets on a brisk, April night. We even came back on our last night, but didn't realize the hours on Google maps was for the deli. The restaurant closes earlier, before 9:00 PM. This meal got us thinking about Paris in a positive light, and we hope to be able to come back to eat the amazing dishes again!

They had a number of goods to choose from and I ended up buying a few things for souvenirs. As for the actual restaurant, they had a number of delicious sounding items on their menu. Our server was very attentive to us and helped us decide on our dinner orders. Similar to the other restaurants though. After our food was delivered, it was far in between when we were checked on again. And after dessert it took even longer for our server to bring the bill. Overall, the food was a letdown. I do not exaggerate when I say that the frog legs just tasted like slightly flavored water. My friend's ravioli had a fairly decent flavored sauce but the pasta was a bit chewy. My friend's duck breast was pretty tough; I had noticed the table next to us also ordered it and they seemed to have trouble finishing/cutting theirs as well. As for my steak with foie gras, well the steak was once again tough and the foie gras was weirdly stringy. It was soft for the most part but there were parts that were tough and stringy. Maybe that's a section that's generally separated in the preparation process and it was missed? In any case it was disappointing. What wasn't disappointing was dessert though; perfectly sweet and balanced.

On the other hand, it made me realize that my mother was a terrible cook. Bistro des Augustins is a small, cozy venue offering both indoor seating and terrace seating near Pont Neuf. It serves a small number of curated dishes, including a wonderfully traditional Bistro Gratin in a homey ceramic dish served piping hot with a brown crispy cheesy top, herbs, spices and chicken. You can also get it with salmon. My brothers and I only saw my mother use our gas range to light her cigarettes, sanitize needles to remove our splinters, and make s'mores during the summer months when she couldn't muster the energy to take us 'outside camping.' I mean, all she had to do was borrow a cookbook, which I'm sure were readily available from maybe a neighbor or in any local bookstore or the public library. How hard is that? I was the only kid who brought a can of tuna and his own monogrammed can opener to school every day. Every day. And mom convinced me that the tuna holster she got me for my birthday was cool and hip. I was a naive mercury-filled fool, although I did become a very fast runner in junior high school because of the tuna holster. The interior décor of Bistro des Augustins is informal and vintage bistro style - wooden tables, traditional chalkboard menus, and soft lighting - creating a relaxed and comfy ambiance. My eyes have been opened to what's possible. Thank you Bistro des Augustins for expanding my culinary horizons. Five stars.

Didn't blow me away, but was solid with the creaminess of the sliced potatoes and emmental cheese combined together with mixed vegetables. The cheese was very strong though, so anything else was unfortunately pretty much overpowered by it. Arrived with bread, but it DEFINITELY could use other carb options to sop it all up (e.g., rice???)! = Landais - Cheese gratin with duck. Same comment as the above, except the Landais had egg and goat cheese also mixed in with almost the same ingredients as the Fermier. THE SERVICE ----------------------- + The lone waitress, who also worked the role as greeter, cashier and bartender was friendly. + Food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. THE SURROUNDINGS ------------------------------------ = Small, tight restaurant. = Not many tables inside - 6 in total. + Located a few blocks away from the more touristy restaurants, towards the East, on a much quieter street. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Nada.

We started with the ratatouille and freshly baked bread, both simple but incredibly well executed and full of depth. The duck steak with roasted potatoes was perfectly cooked--the duck tender with a beautifully crisp exterior, and the potatoes were exceptional in their own right. The gambas flambées with rice were a standout dish: rich, aromatic, and genuinely memorable. For dessert, the chocolate mousse paired with strawberry soup was a highlight and a unique combination that worked surprisingly well together--the richness of the mousse balanced beautifully by the freshness of the strawberries. Service was friendly and attentive throughout, and the restaurant has a lively, bustling atmosphere filled with both locals and visitors, giving it a classic Parisian energy. Reservations are highly recommended as it books out quickly, though occasional cancellations can be found if you're flexible. No real plans. Just walking. Cigarette smoke in the air, scooters passing narrow streets, old stone buildings glowing under soft afternoon light. Online, this place feels impossible to book. But show up 10-15 minutes before opening and suddenly you're seated like you knew the secret all along. Inside, the room hums. Tight tables. Warm walls. Loud enough to feel alive without becoming chaotic. Nobody rushing. Nobody flipping tables. Just the rhythm of Paris doing what it's always done. The menu is entirely in French which, honestly, makes the experience better. You stop ordering with certainty and start ordering with curiosity. My wife had the risotto d'épeautre aux St. Jacques. I ordered the Magret de Canard au Romarin. The duck was solid. A 3.5/5 kind of dish. Rich, savory, comforting after a long day walking through the city. But the risotto surprised me more. The scallops were delicate, the spelt added this earthy texture that made the dish feel substantial without ever becoming heavy. And then there's the mousse au chocolat. The famous one. Served from an oversized bowl with this almost excessive "all you can eat" energy that somehow still feels elegant instead of gimmicky. We only needed a few bites. Soft, luxurious, lightly bitter chocolate balanced perfectly against just enough sweetness. The kind of dessert that doesn't ask for attention. It quietly earns it.

Simple classic French cuisine. We shared the mini raviolis stuffed with mushroom and a foie gras sauce. Wow. And shared their famous beef bourguignon. The tender beef, the sauce! I love the way they plate it too. Delicious. And a bottle of Cabernet Franc from Bourgueil (Loire Valley). The second visit (3 star) was very different from the first visit. Less friendly, borderline rude, took a long while for table service even though it was not busy, rolled their eyes about us sharing and at our wine bottle selection. We didn't feel welcomed. Food remains good, but not outstanding. Roll of the dice on service. I'd say if you're in the area and you don't have to wait it'd be worthwhile, otherwise seek a less touristy spot.
