don't forget to take something with the famous Gruyère double cream as you can see a spoon will stand in it

Finally in Switzerland restaurants are allowed to open the outdoor seating again. So we took the chance on the way to a "Staycation" to visit the old village of Gruyère. Right in the center of this beautiful surroundings is the Café Restaurant Les Remparts - luckily they have some seating on a patio and we were lucky to get a table for two. Naturally in Gruyère you need to eat some cheese. For me it was to early (lunchtime) to eat a cheese fondue or a Raclette (what you should do if you ever come to Gruyère) - so I took the cheese toast which was also great with a small green salad. Service was so friendly and attentive even with a lot going on - my compliments to them. And don't forget to take a dessert or a coffee with the famous Gruyère double cream - a spoon will stand in it. Great place to enjoy some cheese dishes.

I have loved a Gruyere cheese forever. Sharp, slightly gritty, so delicious. While visiting Switzerland I had to visit this town where the cheese comes from. It's like walking into a childhood storybook. Little cafes and shops, cobblestone streets. Do people actually live in this little ancient dreamscape?? Part of our Gruyere fairytale had to include some Gruyere. We found this cute little cafe and sat outside. Best potato leek soup ever, topped with fresh grated local Gruyere. Seriously. I had Gruyere in Gruyere!!maybe it's the equivalent of an immigrant coming to NY and having a hotdog?? Or maybe going to Champagne and having a cold crisp glass of Champagne! Finished with a delicious meringue topped with fresh cream. The cream that in the US is thrown away when it rises to the top because it's like 100% butterfat. The most amazing fatty delicious cream on the planet.

The service here is very friendly, quick, and efficient. The back of the restaurant looks out onto the ramparts of the Chateau du Gruyère. I had to look up that word but essentially it's a fancy word for fort, or the surrounding walls. Pretty nice view for people watching to see how they pose on the ramparts, as well as a great view of the nearby scenery. I got a local white wine. The server gave me something in between sweet and dry and I found it perfect. To eat I got the mixed salad, which had a bunch of vegetables, including greens, beets, carrots, and tomatoes. I also got La planchette, which is a cheese and charcuterie plate with cured meat, and of course, Gruyère cheese. Everything tastes good, especially the wine and cheese and charcuterie tray. When comparing this one to the other one with a view, the service here is much friendlier. They also have a front patio if you prefer to look out on the street where all the main action is.

The view from my table. Omg!

AMAZING Swiss food!! We got the beef steak and tortellini and it came out fresh and hot. The staff was super friendly and the view is to die for! Great vibes to end a great day in Fribourg.

I have attempted to update this Yelp address but worst case, go to google to see the correct address.....in Moléson Farm animals & rollercoaster landmarks helped to ensure we were in the right spot We parked at the bottom of the gravel road in an empty lot across the street - the road leading to the fromagerie is pedestrian only, so this will be your closest parking. Small incline leads you to deliciousness. There is a small case of cheeses and meats to the left and the restaurant is to the right. Very traditional setup with wooden tables and benches. We loved it from the first minute! We ordered the macaroni with cheese (it was penne but outstandingly scrumptious). The cheeses and caramelized onions were the perfect blend Also enjoyed the croûte with an egg.......this is much like a croque without the meat......it was heaven! As we ere lucky enough to find this lace at the beginning of our stay in the Gruyère district, you better believe we'll be coming back for that fondue!

We didn't have a reservation (mid-September) but the host was beyond kind on sneaking us in. A little table in the back was perfect for us and I'm eternally grateful for her kindness. This restaurant feels like a home and they treat you like family. We felt very comfortable and eagerly perused the menu. This is a more new-Swiss style offering and we had to be selective in our choice - we both went with the steak (one big, one small). Being used to American steakhouses my wife was less than impressed. However, I found my 300g steal to be wonderfully cooked, tasty (not busting with flavor as it wasn't seasoned with anything), and filling! The portion was HUGE and I could barely finish it! It fit the bill after a long day of hiking though! Leaving absolutely content with the whole experience I can confidently say that Bären was my favorite meal in Wegen... dare I say all of Switzerland! Oh! Make sure you hit the bathroom as they have some historical pictures on the wall of the region and snowfall, really cool.

Anyways, we bounced back and forth in the tiny town of Gruyères and this place served their meringue with double cream WITH a fruit compote. Now that was the winner for us. Who doesn't like a good side pot of fruit in sugary cooked goodness. So we went in and was asked to sit at any of the tables in the back. The waitresses seemed to be running back and forth and never got to getting our order until like 15 or so minutes. There were other groups of folks who were eating already. some of them had fondue on their tables. We were sticking to the meringue as we already had our fondue the other night. The meringue came out and it was a bit not what I expected. The meringue itself was small, the pot of creme was small and well the pot of fruit was small. Regardless we stuck our spoons into the thick white pot of delciousness that is cream. It's pretty much what you'd think cream tastes like without any flavoring...just cream, but with the meringue it's magic. Add the forest berries compote and you're up in cloud nine. Too bad it was a little pricey and the service was a bit slow to begin with. What we learned later is that there was a whole upstairs restaurant with more people. The place was heaven to my nose as it smelled of melted cheese. On a different note, as we were devouring, I mean, savoring our double cream, another table had a contraption brought to their table with a large block of cheese. OMG it's a cheese melter for the raclette. As the cheese melts and sizzles you scrape it off and eat it with potatoes or bread. Darn oh well. Maybe we can do this next time. We also ordered a tea which came with a small chocolate filled with the double cream...yum. Overall, the price the service and the dessert was okay. I wasn't completely blown away (though it might sound like I did). I'm sure we'll try to get our meringue on at another place if we go back to Gruyères.

This lady gave us an attitude and made comments on everything we did. We were starving so when they served us bread before our meal we had some and then when the fondue came we asked for more bread because we saw that people asked for more bread and she was more than happy to get them more bread. However, when we asked for more bread she gave us a nasty look and comment. Then when we didn't finish the fondue she made another comment about the bread. The food is mediocre here so it's not worth coming to be treated with poor service.
