This company is not a very honest one. We took our daughter's Mini Cooper in because it was in limp mode and we didn't understand why. After checking it out, the service manager advised us that we had a blown head gasket, and they recommended replacing the motor. We have documentation of this diagnosis. He claimed that the radiator had oil in it when in fact, it was just bars leak that they had themselves put into our radiator the year prior on another repair. It turns out that the car only needed one coil pack, and a spark plug diagnosed by the AutoZone machine and has run fantastic ever since. I would strongly recommend going elsewhere. We have no idea how many people he has done this to I know that the economy is bad, but honesty still pays off. The service manager was asked about this and he was very rude. It could be you. Seems like a hit or miss looking through the reviews. Unfortunately, mine was a miss. Everything seemed cool at the shop, a lot of projects going on, people clearly trust the shop, awesome. In short, they never even touched my car in the week of it being there. I'm a patient guy, it's whatever. I do have a problem however of the shop telling me they will work on it at 'x' precise time, and falling short on that promise. They did this not once, but three times. Monday morning I got my keys back, and had it fixed in the same day by another shop. My experience was just around the beginning of COVID, in that I am sympathetic, but there is not a great excuse for consistent poor communication. Just tell me you have too much going on/not enough hands - I'll find somewhere else, no issues. read more

Another fantastic experience with Lester's. I woke up late and brought the car in 4 hours after I was supposed to. I fully expected them to tell me to come back another day, especially since they were already fitting me in last minute. They were very nice, let me leave the car anyways, and even still had it done in less than 3 hours. Their original quote was the lowest I got and then the actual price was half of the quote. Our car's air-conditioner was not working. Lester's was referred to us. We told the office guy that we had already had Freon replaced but that didn't work more than a few days. Lester's kept the car for 2 days and did nothing more than replace the Freon. Then charged $200 - double what the first place had charged. Let the buyer beware! read more

I have used this shop for years and was always happy with the quality, speed and price of the work. This time they hit on two of the three and so I will not be returning again and also I will no longer recommend them. I had my alternator go bad in my Acura RDX and was able to limp into Lester's where I told the office guy, Mike, that the alternator was out and described the symptoms. He called me a few hours later and told me the alternator needed to be replaced and the bill was $1008 ! Yes, you read that correct, over a thousand bucks for a job that should be around $400 to $500. I balked at the cost and Mike assured me that the parts were expensive and the job would take a few hours. I am kinda stuck now because the car is there and they have already charged me $135 to "diagnose " the problem. So, I let them do it. They charged me over $440 for the alternator and $60 for a new belt and over $330 for labor. I researched the parts and the alternator is about 135 and the belt is 16 which was not needed anyway. To bolt in a new alternator has taken me about 90 minutes in the past on a similar vehicle, and I am not a mechanic. Any decent mechanic could do it in less than an hour. So what used to be a good shop charging a fair price is now an okay shop that gouges customers like most mechanics. If you can find another place. Disappointed because now I have to search for a new mechanic. They did the job in less than a day, but I believe Lester's is under new ownership and new management and it seems like the new philosophy is to gouge. read more

I don't normally write reviews, but I had a GREAT experience at Lester's Shop. I went around to a few other mechanic shops like Reliable Automotive and Good Year. These other places wanted to charge $100+ just for a quick 5 min diagnostic. Lester's was very straightforward with me as to what they thought was the problem over the phone, and didn't charge me a single thing for a diagnostic. They don't upcharge on the parts and have a very fair pricing model, and were able to diagnose the issue and change all my spark plugs for 30% cheaper than what other shops were estimating it would cost. They also gave me great advice on how to fix my bumper's scrapes, without having to refinish the whole thing. Lester's is one of the most HONEST and STRAIGHTFORWARD mechanics I've been to, and they don't try to sell you more than what you need. I had a great experience here and will definitely come back here for all my future auto/body repair needs. read more

Asked tony to call me with his quote to fix my car (brakes) because I had a budget of what I could afford. He quoted me for $900 and I said go ahead because I had that money to spend. I get a call two days later when my vehicle was finished and the total was over $1400. Dishonest. I asked him to go through the expenses since he quote me for $500 less two days prior and he knew he was caught up. He went through the list and eventually realized a few of his "mistakes". The final cost came down to $1150. Still almost $300 more than my yore, even after he caught his mistakes of Over $250 dollars. Will never take my car back and will never recommend this business to anyone. Very sad and disappointed because I thought he was nice and honest and straightforward. read more

Nearing 4.30pm on a weekday I get in my car expecting to go home and it won't start. I suspect it is the starter and get it towed to Lester's at closing time. Next morning I get a message some security bit needed replacement, and while they can't do that they did reprogram it (I'd done a quick fix I found online a couple months ago, but look how well that worked) so I could drive it to the specialized locksmith who DOES mess with chips and security bits. Rather than toying around with the battery or starter to pad the bill, they only charged me $26 for the reprogramming/labor to make it temporarily drivable again and I was on my way. I've taken vehicles here a few times and have been happy with their work. But a couple of weeks ago I took my car in to have the starter changed and was told it would be $200 or so. I said if it's $250 or less you don't need to call me for approval. I called later, they said it was ready. When I arrived the bill was $495. I hadn't been consulted for approval. I would not have approved if I'd been given that quote. I kindly protested but instead of taking at least a little $ off because of their mistake, they just explained why the price was justified. I'm a nice guy, I didn't make a stink, I paid the bill. But I'm still pretty unhappy with the experience and I won't be going back to Lester's. read more

Lester asked me where I'd heard about the shop. When I told him Yelp, he said "Don't tell me! I never read my reviews, but if you came in after you read them, they must be okay." I didn't tell Lester his shop had 100% positive reviews, just that they were very okay. :) I brought my little 9-year-old car in to get a thorough look-over before I take a road trip. I was sure they were going to come back telling me about the engine, the transmission, the brakes, and goodness knows what else. Instead, they replaced a headlight bulb that I'd asked about, replaced my air filter (I'd asked about an oil change, but was told the oil was still clean), and recommended some tire and alignment work that Lester's doesn't do in the shop. Total cost was extremely reasonable, and they even gave me a ride to and from my home even though they were short-staffed that day. Bonus points for what ought to be standard: treating a woman like a person who can understand things, not a person to be screwed over as much as possible. I felt Lester was very straightforward with me and kept me updated on what was happening. If I were staying in the area, I'd definitely be a repeat customer. read more

They did it free and it was a great help so when i bought it i brought it staight back to them and they fixed the necessary things in just a couple hours for less than a couple hundred. I contacted Lester from a recommendation from a friend. I bought a used truck I needed so much done to. I had them change all my fluids, check my components, put in new lights all around the vehicle and remove some things from the truck. After it was all said and done, they only charged me 400.00 (+-) which is amazing. The best part is...they care about their customers. These guys gave me a ride to work both days!! I don't go anywhere else for auto inspections. The people here are so helpful and will do their best to give you the best possible service. Anywhere else in San Marcos will charge you 60-80 just to take a look at your car, but these guys will drop everything and take a look at it for free (if possible). I went there because my maintenance required light came on, and they were able to tell what the problem was and fixed it for no cost. I definitely feel that they are honest and will never charge you a penny more than required. read more

Been here multiple times for my car repairs and maintenance. First and foremost, Lester's Shop is honest. Hard to come by in a mechanic. They're also competent. On the downside, they specialize in major repairs and is less convenient for regular maintenance. They also take longer than your typical maintenance shop usually requiring at least an overnight stay for your car. But their work is good. They installed a faulty O2 sensor in my car, which was terribly inconvenient for me, but they were willing to replace it free of charge. read more

Have a 2000 JEEP Grand Cherokee and it needed a new drive shaft. First place I took it to said it would be a two day job, but Lester's had it back to me in about 6 hours and at a very reasonable price. It was about 3 or 4 weeks ago and it's doing great.
