Sometimes I miss Long Island. You can throw a stone and find really good food -and that's exactly what happened this week. I was in the area for a meeting and pulled over for a quick bite. The menu at Let there be bagels is HUGE. I was temporarily overwhelmed and then spotted the chopped salad. I'm trying to make better decisions during work travel, so I filled out the form, chose a bunch of healthy morsels and waited a bit for my salad to be thoroughly chopped. This was a REAL chopped salad...and there was so much left over that I had the rest for dinner when I arrived home the next evening. My colleague scarfed down his bagel and he really liked it. The staff was lovely and they had a steady stream of regulars in and out. There's a small seating area in the center if you're not planning on taking your foodstuffs with you. I'm sure it's going to be hard to imagine that what I tell you is true; but I assure you I wouldn't bother wasting my time doing this review if it wasn't. Sunday morning, one other customer in the store. I saw as many of seven different people working. But not one person could help me for about 12 minutes. Eventually, I should've known that I asked for a simple bagel with lock spread. It took about 10 minutes for this enormous task of preparing such an item. Probably another seven minutes because the person did not know any of the prices since I had actually wanted juice as well and a plain bagel with nothing on it. Finally got home, opened the wrapping only to find she had given me a bagel with scallion cream cheese instead of lox bread. The bagels were fine/good. I had two bagels while I was in PW, an egg with cream cheese and a rainbow (basically plain with colors) with lox spread. They also have so many baked goods: cookies, cupcakes, tarts, danish, ruggalah, "hamentach," muffins, etc. The blueberry muffin was pretty good. Every bagel place in Long Island seems to bake their own black and white cookies, and LTBB was no different. It was the right size (big, not huge), frosted on the correct side, the right amount of cake on the bottom and both frostings tasted good. I used to frequent this place often. While they were never the cheapest option, the quality was generally good, and their sandwiches were always on point. However, over time I noticed a steady decline in the food and service, which led me to stop coming altogether. After almost a year I decided to give them another try. After being a loyal customer for 20+ years, I will never be returning. I walked into the entirely empty bagel store and waited 4 minutes before even being spoken to by an employee, who was rude once she finally decided to take my order. All three bagels were rock hard and burnt (and I'm assuming also stale). They were completely inedible. I follow a page on Instagram called @LIeats ( Long Island eats ) and a few days ago they posted a pic of what they call the " Wake N' Bacon "- Now I'm not sure if this is the official name for the sandwich or not but I ended up having to show the lady that took my order a picture of what I saw on Instagram. This is by far the worst bagel and black and white cookie I have had on Long Island. I was really disappointed when the went here because it had a lot of hype and let me down hard. The bagel was hard and not soft on the inside and was very small for the price. In addition the black and white cookie and bagel both lacked flavor. On top of the bad food the person who helped was the worst. I told her all at once what I wanted and repeated myself but she forgot which bagel I asked for, then forgot if I wanted cream cheese or butter, then forgot I wanted a cookie, then forgot I wanted coffee. I just spent 35 min if my life that I'll never get back waiting for 3 toasted bagel egg sandwiches. I was the only customer at 6:30am this Sunday morning. A line quickky formed behind me with many people getting impatient and leaving. I felt bad for a guy who waited 20 for a cup of coffee. This place used to be a good place but it appears to be under new management. Clearly they don't read directions when you place an order . They remodeled the whole joint some years ago and they forgot to update their cash registers with a POS system that can handle credit card swiping. Owner is too cheap to do this in order to streamline processes for his unintelligible employees and customers alike, while at the same time having the nerve to charge you for the 3.5% credit card transaction fee. It's a miracle you get your order right after placing it, it's too often incorrect. Every nook and cranny of the place is stuffed with items for you to buy...it's even crept into the seating area where they use the tables to stuff loaves of bread that no one buys onto.
