The surgery itself appeared technically competent, and we are grateful that Oscar made it through a very difficult procedure. Our disappointment came from the disconnect between the practice's stated commitment to intensive aftercare and communication, and the experience we actually had. The practice's messaging emphasizes close follow-up, hands-on post-operative care, and strong physician involvement. Based on that, and the significant financial investment (Initially quoted around $10k, ended up being about $12k all-in with the extra anesthesia needed), we expected a structured recovery plan and proactive communication. Instead, the aftercare felt surprisingly hands-off, and the gap between what was emphasized and what occurred left us feeling manipulated and deceived. We never met with the neurologist directly at any point. After raising this, we were advised that a face-to-face encounter should not have been expected due to the emergent nature of the initial appointment. While we understand that emergencies can limit availability, we still expected direct physician reassessment or involvement at some stage of a complex neurological recovery, particularly since our dog's intake report indicated he should be reassessed at two weeks. That reassessment did not occur. At his two-week suture removal appointment, no prognosis or forward-looking guidance was provided by a veterinarian. All updates and guidance were relayed through an assistant, often briefly and without sufficient detail. Important information, such as a prednisone tapering schedule, was not provided until we explicitly asked, and no one initially confirmed medication quantities or timing to ensure a safe taper. Decisions such as keeping his urinary catheter in place for an extended period were communicated by a vet tech, without physician explanation or follow-up. As Oscar has regained some mobility but still requires assistance to urinate, we have been left with unanswered questions about whether these decisions affected his recovery. Because our calls and emails to the doctor were not returned, we were left without clarification or reassurance during a critical period. After the practice later reached out in response to concerns we raised in a Google Review (the only reliable way to reach them apparently), I replied with specific, reasonable questions about Oscar's care and received no response. A subsequent call I made to follow up resulted in a promise that a vet tech would reach out, which to date, also did not happen. We are fully committed to doing everything possible for Oscar's recovery and would pay the cost again if it meant receiving the level of care that was described. Clear guidance and direct communication would have alleviated many of these concerns. In their absence, the burden of interpretation fell entirely on us. We rushed him to Levine Veterinary Neurology in University Park, FL, hoping for help and compassion. What we got instead was one of the worst experiences I've ever had with any medical professional -- human or animal. When we arrived, my dog was terrified, panting, and in obvious distress. Instead of reassurance or guidance, the veterinarian called me and basically suggested that the surgery "might not be worth the money" and implied we should reconsider saving him. That was the tone -- not compassion, not support, just discouragement. We asked for a few minutes to talk as a family. We ultimately decided to go forward with the surgery because we love our dog and wanted to give him a chance. Thank God we did, because even though he won't walk again, he is alive, happy, and still the same loving dog. The vet was wrong about him. But the worst part? When we picked him up, they charged us an extra $1,500 simply because we took time to make the hardest decision of our lives. No empathy, no understanding -- just a bill. The total cost ended up being over $12,000, and not a single dollar of discount or compassion was offered. To make it even worse, the neurosurgeon never showed his face before or after the surgery. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Levine and his staff. Other vets had all kinds of treatment they recommended which were very pricey. Dr. Levine sat on the floor with out dog for about 10 minutes and told us what he thought was wrong and how it would progress. He gave us options but pointed out that the results would probably not be great and recommended end of life treatment. He was right and the other vet and their treatment would have done no good. In Mid May of 2024 he had an issue that turned out to be a neck disc. Dr. Levine operated both times. Osito is well on his way to 100% recovery from episode 2. Dr. Levine and staff are absolute angels!!! They truly cared about Osito and were there every step of the way. I highly recommend them. That being said, if you have a Dachshund, a Frenchie, or a Corgi (or any other dog prone to neural issues) you need to have insurance. We drove him from Tampa to his office in Sarasota where he gave him the best care possible. After a couple days I his office for treatment and observation, Pepper was back home. Armed with a rehabilitation protocol Dr Levine gave us we worked with Pepper diligently each day and less than 6 weeks later he was back to walking with his brother and sister. Albeit he has some residual weakness, his love for life and can-do attitude is present every day. We are happy to say a year and a half later and Now 10 years old, Pepper continues to make our day and those he comes into contact with. I don't write reviews about anything, but the experience that I had with my dog here was something that I don't think I can properly do justice in these words. Worth whatever travel time it takes to get to this location. Whether by car, plane, or whatever you choose, this staff is worth every penny. I traveled over 3 hours to get here and I would do it again in a second. They make you feel like your dog is a part of their family and you will feel beyond comfortable here. From the moment I walked in the staff welcomed me with compassion and warm smiles. Charlie walked through Chevy's health history and all the details to give Dr Levine the best idea possible of what's going on. Dr Levine sat down with Chevy and walked through all the possibilities of what could be going on and the pathways to treatment. He spoke to me with empathy and humor to make the atmosphere not seem so dire. All necessary precautions are taken to make sure your animal is kept safe. Once the MRI was completed, he walked us through the images and told us the surgery that would take place to fix the disc. Again, the communication and empathy was beyond anything I expected. The surgery took a few hours and they called me once they were completed to inform of the success of the procedure. They even sent me Live Photos of how he was doing and the nurse that stayed overnight to keep an eye on him gave me updates as well. Once he was ready to be discharged the next day, Charlie sat down with us to make sure I understood how the next two weeks would play out and answer any questions I had before bringing my boy to me. I contacted Dr. Levine's office in two occasions and I spoke to Alex and later to Kayla, both were very helpful from the start with all the information regarding the appointment and the possible procedure after the MRI. We all made the decision to take Hershey's to Dr. Levine's office right away. So we did schedule the next available opening. Alex his nurse, was great, their service and dedication is very noticeable. After Alex finished, Dr. Levine came to the room and started explaining everything about the neurological system. he then proceeded to perform the MRI on Hershey's and three hours later I was contacted to meet with Dr. Levine to explain what he found. This time I went with my daughter and Dr. Levine explained us the entire process, Hershey's needed surgery. Once the surgery was done I went to pick him up. Once again the staff explained the entire process, I was given paperwork with indications in how to give Hershey's his new meds. Alex, Hershey's nurse did a follow up, asking how Hershey's was. Our 14 year old Beagle had a history of back problems. His issues were with his lower spine and usually affected his rear legs. In June of this year, he injured himself again but it apparently was in his shoulder area. Our regular vet recommended we get immediate attention for him, possibly surgery was required. They gave us two referrals and we decided on Dr Levine because the other doctor was unable to do anything right away. We were able to get in right away and they did an MRI and determined that he had hurt his upper back and would require surgery. He told us the odds were in our favor despite the dog's age. He told us there was a 92% chance of a positive outcome. Our dog was otherwise extremely happy and acted like a puppy at times. We discussed the options and decided that, given the prognosis, we would go forward with the surgery. It was done that afternoon and according to the office staff, all went very well. They kept him overnight and expected to release him the next day. The following morning they called to tell us he had a bad night and they wanted to keep him another night. We had paid approximately $7000 up front for the operation and they charged us extra for the second overnight stay. We picked him up the following day and met with the nurse who provided us with instructions for care and pain management. We had some difficulty getting him to take the medications 5 or 6 different times per day. We fought to get the pills down his throat and he scratched and bit us in the process. We eventually got an appetizer stimulant and that helped get him to eat and we had better results with the administration of medication. We slept on the floor outside of his cage every night because he would wake up screaming in pain. This continued for a few weeks. The doctor had originally told us it would take four to six weeks for a complete recovery but he should show improvement in two weeks. During this period, we called and emailed the office almost daily and communicated with the nurse who would check with Dr Levine and then get back to us. We never spoke to the doctor after the surgery. The follow-up was handled by the office staff. This disturbed us to the extent that we tried to get our regular vet to help us. They declined due to the fact that they were not comfortable handling the case. After four weeks of misery for all of us, the dog was obviously ready to go. He stopped eating, drinking and going to the bathroom and would just stare at the door. We took this as a sign. He wouldn't allow us to touch him and his pain had begun to increase. On Monday morning, exactly four weeks after surgery, we took him to our regular vet and had him put to rest. It was absolutely the worst month of our lives watching the poor dog suffer. It was worse than dealing with the deaths of our human family members. While we were having the dog euthanized, the nurse from Dr Levine's office emailed to check in after the weekend. We replied that we had to let him go. He responded with a brief condolence and that was it. Never a word from the doctor himself. We felt that he was more interested in collecting the money than he was about the dog's wellbeing. We felt abandoned and disappointed and we'll probably never forgive ourselves for putting our baby through the traumatic process. We will never know whether the doctor ever truly believed that the surgery would be successful but we have considerable doubts. Needless to say, we might never recover from this horrible experience. It's been four months since his passing and we still have nightmares and serious depression. We could go on but you probably get the point. DO NOT USE THIS PRACTICE! Worst experience of my life. I will say what Maria W. said... "wish I would've never walked into this place". Our vet recommended we immediately go there from her office. We arrived at 2:04 pm and were charged "after hour" fees. In order to be seen, we had to provide our credit card for estimated services. When NO mri was done, and they told us to go to Blue Pearl, they charged $1500 for emergency in addition to the neuro exam and blood pressure! What emergency? It was 2 pm and our vet told them we were coming. A TOTAL RIP OFF.. I went to 2 other vets that day and didn't get charged anywhere close to that amount. AND the other offices did much more than the Levine practice. All he did was provide a diagnosis from his exam. You could not find a more professional Neurology Specialist like Levine Neurology. Our Dog Baily was experiencing some serious walking issues that needed further evaluation that our Vet could not provide. We were recommended to Levine Veterinary Neurology to dig deeper into why Baily was having these issues. When we arrived at Levine N., we were greeted like family that made us feel immediately we were in the right place to help our Bailey. We were greeted by Aubrey Wagy one of the Veterinary Technicians who spent a good half hour getting detailed information on Bailey. Then we were greeted by Dr. Levine who spent another good half hour checking out Bailey. After Dr. Levine evaluated bailey from head to toe, he recommended the first thing that should be done is an MRI to truly get the big picture what was going on with Bailey. We approved the procedure that he wanted to do, and we are so glad we did. When the MRI was finished Dr. Levine spent another good half hour with us showing us and explaining the MRI pictures. The good news in Bailys case is he had no Cancer but other neurology concerns that needed treatment for pain. One thing we really liked about Dr. Levine he is not quick to go into surgery unless it was absolutely necessary. Dr. Levine prescribed some medications that hopefully will bring bailey around to walking properly again. When we were ready to leave the practice, we received a very detailed report on Bailey and explaining the medications and dosage to be giving him. As of today 7/3/2022, Baily is showing signs of recovery and is starting to walk better again through his pain medication. I must say this business cares more than one can imagine in helping its customers. Aubrey Wagy contacted me via email asking how Bailey was doing and even has taken the time to talk with me again on which medications seem to be working. Aubery is a sensational and most caring human being. In closing, if you love your pet and want to go the extra mile to try to save your pets life this is the place to get comfort. This office is working a scam to take peoples money and producing fraudulent estimates. Make sure to get your signed copy right then as the manager and dr levines wife explained is not part of their normal procedure. Not sure how that makes sense considering nurse charles was adamant on making sure he gave us our credit card receipt so they could have done it. No real reason not to give out the estimate except that you're trying to pull a scam. You guys are supposed to be the advisers and should be able to be trusted. My French bulldog is 3 and came in for an emergency mri as he could no longer walk after an injury. We were presented an estimate (myself, my boyfriend and my mom) with Charles. He had HIS iPad there going through the $12k charges that would be for the mri, meds and surgery. We asked Charles what the largest charge of $4,400 was on a single line. He stated it was for surgery. We then asked to have a few mins to discuss the amount. We discussed if surgery is not needed we will at least get back $4.400 for the surgery plus the meds after the surgery. We get the call from dr Levine stating he has 3 bad discs and the chances of surgery helping were 22%. After making a hard decision we decided to go the medication route as $4400 for a surgery with those statistics made no sense. We come back to pick my dog up from the mri with his meds and still receive no estimate paperwork. I receive an email the next day from Alexis with my $3,461 refund is ready to be sent back. I let her know this is not the correct estimate and numbers have been changed and that is not the copy I signed. She then tells me I made it up in my head. Myself my mom and boyfriend discussed this number in the room she was not in after speaking with Charles. I asked her to have the dr call me and she said he won't be calling it will be his wife. His wife calls to go over my complaint and says that could never happen and basically no one there makes mistakes even though my dog is alive and has a death date listed on my discharge paperwork. She continues to argue and even calls me back at 9p to further double down. Unbelievable. Due to receiving an edited forged and fraudulent estimate after the fact i will be reporting all three professional licenses to the board. Worst office experience of my life. I wish I would've never walked into this place. I will regret it everyday. Yes the Dr performed surgery and I guess I should be happy about that. Was the surgery good? Idk I never herd from the Doctor after surgery. All I got was a report to cover their ass. Once I picked up my dog communication with them was so rough and could never get any answers all I get was...well your dog may never walk again. Well he may never regain bodily function. I sent video of his muscle twitches to (Erica)because that was the best way to communicate. Also a video of my dog whimpering and panting in the middle of the night. And their response was it's normal it's muscle spasm. He's not in pain it's from him reacting to his nerves or whatever stupid response she made up. Well it wasn't and your neglect of care made my dog suffer even more. Not to mention the way he was sent home. OMG I could beat someone... finally after 4 weeks of total nothing of help from whoever was responsible over there. We took our sweet dog to Levine Veterinary Neurology to be diagnosed and treated if it was at all possible. The staff was upfront about potential costs from the moment we phoned, and the team in the office was kind, sympathetic and professional, spending quite a bit of time with us to talk about potential risks and recommendations for the test. We did not hear the news we wanted to receive about our sweet girl, but her condition was explained with compassion and available options for care. I highly recommend Dr Levine. Lucy saw him 2 yrs ago (she was a 10 yr old toy Aussie) for a neck injury that Blue Pearl didn't fix and after our local vet recommended euthanasia. We got a second opinion from Dr Brown in St Pete to see ONLY Dr Levine (in Sarasota at the time). He did a second MRI on Lucy and operated. She had a long recovery but 2 years later she's doing great. Dr Levine was excellent. I've read great things about Dr. Levine and I'm sure he's fine. He charges over $6000 for an emergency MRI. I appreciated his coming to the office on a Friday night to perform the procedure. However there was no follow up whatsoever and my Jackson died after the procedure from fluid in his lungs. I emailed and called Dr. Levine over the weekend asking for help and guidance - nothing. I would expect with that much money spent and being a high-risk procedure for an elderly dog, Dr. Levine would follow up the next day and see how things were going. Instead I had to reach out at least three times with no response. When they learned that Jackson passed, I asked to speak with Dr. Levine as I wanted to understand what went wrong. Not once did he extend the courtesy of calling but instead kept sending his technicians to call or email. I find that very unprofessional. Unfortunately this is symptomatic of vets in this area not just Dr. Levine. You spend a lot of money, there is no follow up and they really don't care. It is simply a business for them. I'm sure Dr. Levine enjoys his animals but he also said "he's just a dog". Well for me he was my son and the greatest loss in my life to date. Think very seriously before subjecting an elderly dog to an MRI despite claims that they've "never had a complication or death". They now have and I'm sure Jackson wasn't the first despite claims. A call was made from Boyette Animal Hospital in Riverview and we drove down to Sarasota that night. Dr. Livine stayed late along with his staff to examine her. My wife and I were both surprised at first by Dr. Livine coming in and sitting on the floor, and while talking with us doing the exam of Jaye. I was struck by his confidence in his ability which some people may be put off by but it told me right away that he new what he was doing and he really enjoyed his work. After all the tests his conclusion that Jaye had IMMUNE-MEDIATED POLYARTHRITIS was confirmed. Jaye has gone from being carried around because of the pain when she walked and 105 degree temp to her old self. My wife and I believe Dr. Levine is the reason Jaye is still with us. We are extremely disappointed in the lack of care we received from Levine Veterinary Neurology. We were led to believe that Dr. Levine and his staff would treat us like family - a claim that is all over the website. During the consultation and subsequent MRI on Friday, May 3, 2019, we were treated kindly and we thought Dr. Levine would help us figure out what was happening with our precious 6 year old boxer, Lincoln. The total cost of the consultation, MRI, medication, and genetic testing was over $4000. We left with no clear answers but medication and instructions to contact Dr. Levine in one week to discuss how the medication was working. Over the weekend we noticed some additional symptoms and called the office first thing Monday morning to speak to Dr. Levine. A "nurse" called and left a message on one cell phone after 6:00 in the evening. (There were three phone numbers on file.) The message stated that we could bring our dog back for more testing since there were new symptoms but we wouldn't be able to discuss this with a "nurse" until Wednesday. The sedation was very difficult for our boy to come out of and we did not want to put him through anything else if it wasn't absolutely going to help him. We called back on Friday to discuss the medication as instructed with Dr. Levine. We did not receive a call back at all on Friday. We were left to figure out what we should do with the medication as the directions were only for one week. We called again on Monday and told that is not how their office works but still were only allowed to speak to a "nurse" who would relay the information about our boxer's changes in condition to Dr. Levine. We received no call back. We called again - our Lincoln was significantly worse and exhibiting more symptoms. We were told we could come in for a brain MRI (another $2,000) or a recheck with Dr. Levine for approximately $345. We asked to speak to Dr. Levine on the phone. Lincoln could not walk in a straight line and was unable to ride in the car for the hour that it would take to get to Dr. Levine's office. Still we could not speak to Dr. Levine and when we spoke to the "nurse" they would say that they would tell the doctor but we never heard back from the office. Our sweet boy Lincoln died on Saturday, May 18th. We called the office on Monday and told the receptionist that we wanted to get the genetic records and to make sure that the doctor and staff knew that Lincoln had died. Again, I wouldn't be able to speak to anyone until Wednesday. The "nurse" called Wednesday and said, "How's Lincoln?" That was the last call we received. I received an email with the wrong test results and a follow up email with the correct results. I never heard anything from Dr. Levine. No call. No condolences. Nothing. We were so hopeful that Dr. Levine would take care of our boy and us, but instead we felt ignored and not cared for at all. We received no help to try to figure out what was happening to our Lincoln.
